[arr] Sampling A.R Rahman music

2006-01-28 Thread adfmia
Has anyone already reported that the French hip-hop crew La Caution
used a sample of Ottagatei kattiko from Gentleman for their new album?
Have they been allowed to use the sample? Dr DRE had to pay 1,5
million dollars for not crediting the sample for the first album of
Truth Hurts.

tamil
songs,Thaniye thaniye(rhythm) and Sandhana
thendral(kandukondein),but
both were part of medleys of songs close to our
hearts as Shankar
and Mahalakshmi Iyer put it.

Rahman songs were aplenty,including Urvashi
urvashi,Dil se re(sung by
some newbie called Rahman(?) ),and the usual Shankar
Mahadevan
rendering of Ghanan Ghanan with him going into a
trance at the
end, mesmerising the crowd with his sten-gun-fire of
swaras.This new
guy Rahman was good in his renditions of Sonu Nigam
numbers.

Blaaze featured in the show with 2 raps, one of Bunty n
Bubly,the
other,a new one extempore for IITians, moving on to
Main aisa kyon hoon.
Srinivas joined later for a rendering of kaisi hai yeh
rut and later
Vijay Yesudas for Koi kahe.

Mostly the songs were from DC,KHNH and BnB.Mahalakshmi
Iyer was the
lead female vocalist. The stage presence of Shankar
Mahadevan was
something to talk about. It may not have the grandeur
of an ARR show
but the show rocked!!

Dawn Is Upon Us
History bumps into reality in a growing-up film for a whole

After a run-in with the armed forces and the Animal Welfare Board, when Rakeysh
Mehra's Rang De Basanti finally makes its way to the theatres this Republic
Day, its provocative take on patriotism and the urban youth will prove to be an
interesting new addition to the genre of Indian youth cinema. From Mere Apne,
Vijeta, Hu Tu Tu to Dil Chahta Hai, Yuva, Paanch and Lakshya, we've had a
number of films on the rootlessness of the young and their search for identity
and direction. The distinct element about Rang De... is the way it constantly
interplays between the youth of the past and the youth of today.

There's hope that hidden in the hedonism of today's youth is a possibility, a
spark of the passion of yesterday.

It's a film about contemporary Indian youngsters, their carelessness,
selfishness, materialism, consumerism and lack of idealism. No one identifies
with the country. They don't want to try to change things for the better. They
haven't heard of flower power, Vietnam, Tiananmen or JP, says Mehra. His film
is also about colonial India of the 1930s and young revolutionaries like Bhagat
Singh, Durga Bhabhi, Chandra Shekhar Azad, Ram Prasad Bismil and Ashfaque
Ullah. I was very keen on doing a film on the armed revolution, says Mehra.
But when he spoke to some young people around him, he realised that no one
seemed to know about it. These fighters remained figures from distant history,
and hadn't entered the contemporary popular subconscious. So I decided to
juxtapose the youth of today against them, make them see their own images in
another mirror, says Mehra.

In the film these two disparate worlds collide when a bunch of youngsters are
asked to play yesteryear's heroes in a film being made by a British filmmaker
Sue (Alice Patten). It's then that Rang De... comes alive with interesting
parallels and departures. There is a sense of loss when you realise how far Gen
Now has come from those days of pure, heady idealism. And there is a
simultaneous hope that hidden in the hedonism of today's youth is a
possibility, a spark of the passion of yesterday, that the spirit of rebellion
transcends time.

There's DJ, alias Daljeet (Aamir Khan), a loud, over-the-top extrovert who also
hides many insecurities behind his carefree demeanour, insecurities about
facing the real world outside the university. Karan Singhania (Siddharth) has
been born to rich parents, can't communicate with his industrialist father and
thinks there's life in migrating abroad. Aslam (Kunal Kapoor) comes from an
orthodox family which opposes his Hindu friends and laidback lifestyle, even as
he feels suffocated by their ghetto mentality. Sukhi (Sharman Joshi) has only
one wish in life, that he shouldn't die a virgin. Flt Lt Ajay Rathod (R.
Madhavan) is the only one who truly believes in the spirit of India and is
engaged to the only girl in the group, Sonia (Soha Ali Khan).

The journey, the coming of age, is nicely charted out. There's the engaging
banter, the playfulness, the jokes. There's the initial refusal to play the
roles, the lack of identification with freedom fighters, the open questioning
as to why anyone should give his life for the nation. Then, slowly, as the
role-playing takes over, past and present come together in harmony and
completely alter the lives of the young. They become one in spirit with their
characters. The change in mindset, values and perspectives is slow but very
sure and steady.

The most interesting metamorphosis is that of the saffronite rightwing Laxman
Pandey (Atul Kulkarni). The cheerleader of swadeshi is at loggerheads with the
group for their overt westernisation, but Sue sees her Bismil in him. As he
gets to don the role of Ram Prasad Bismil, things change. From an outsider, he
gradually becomes one with the group and also sheds his resentment against
Aslam who plays Ashfaque Ullah alongside him.

Mehra seems to see hope in his fundamentalist frenzy as well. He lives on the
edge. These youngsters do get swayed by the wave. He could have easily gone the
wrong way, promoting communal hatred, says Mehra. But there is redemption for
him, all he has to do is move away from dirty politics and listen to his own
conscience.

The second half moves on to the cause which fires the group's new-found
idealism and zeal. And quite realistically, it's not a larger social or
political issue that motivates them but

[arr] Subhash K Jha reviews RDB

2006-01-28 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
 Director : Rakeysh Mehra
 Music : A.R. Rahman
Starring : Aamir Khan, Siddharth, Atul Kulkarni, Sharman Joshi, Kunal Kapoor,
Soha Ali Khan Pataudi, Alice Patten, R. Madhavan, Waheeda Rehman, Kirron Kher
and Om Puri

By Subhash K Jha, Indo-Asian News Service

So early during the year, when you're least expecting it, this film comes
along to grab you by your soul. It happened last year at this time when Sanjay
leela Bhansali's BLACK gatecrashed into our purview.

It's happened again this year. RANG DE BASANTI is undoubtedly THE FILM OF THE
YEAR. It's theme is so excitingly original, the tonal textures are so untried
and yet so visually emotionally and aesthetically energized, you wonder how
such a near-flawless merger of history and fiction could be achieved with such
editing and directorial cogency.

In every sense of the word... ... RANG DE BASANTI is a winner. Its aesthetic
values and characterizations fill you with amazement and elation. It's a
gloriously triumphant look at today's lives. And yet it audaciously takes a
sweeping arching look at history for answers to the Big Question.

Where has today's generation gone wrong? Why is the nation so inured in
corruption? And why are we so enamoured of the stagnant status quo?

Are we scared to sweep the garbage? Lofty thoughts, often swept by popular art
under a carpet of cynicism. Not this time! Rakeysh Mehra achieves a stirring
and stunning synthesis of social relevance and mesmeric storytelling. His first
film AKS was about the supernatural. RANG DE BASANTI too has a supernatural
quality to it. Though on this occasion that quality comes from within a
contemporary 'natural' setting rather than any desire to seek answers to our
present-day imbroglio in other-worldly explanations.

From the word go, we are led into a world where youthful aspirations are
aligned to the socio-political reality of a country on the brink. RANG DE
BASANTI is a film on the edge. It jumps and careens across lives prancing on
the precipice of the contemporary and the historical.

Is desh ka kuch nahin hoga! How many times have we said this to ourselves
and to others?

Mehra's protagonists, an assorted bunch of collegians and post-college
friends, are played with amazingly casual grace by Aamir Khan (DJ), Siddharth
(Karan), Sharman Joshi (Sukhi), Kunal Kapoor (Aslam) and Soha Ali Khan (Sonia).

Into their world of endless fun and aimless aspirations comes a pretty and
brainy British girl named Sue (the lovely and graceful debutant Alice Patten).
Prompted by her colonist-grandfather's diary, Sue wants to make a film on the
life of the legendary Indian freedom fighters - you know, Bhagat Singh,
Chandrashekhar Azad, the works.

And guess what? Sue wants to cast DJ and gang as the revolutionaries!

The guffaws and the giggles that follow Sue's dreams fade away, as this
youthful brigade of adrift dreamers gets down to the ritual of acquainting
itself with Indian history.

RANG DE BASANTI dares to point fingers, and tells us where we've gone wrong.
It isn't only a film about the education of a moor less generation; it's also
an outstandingly accomplished piece of cinema. Mehra proves himself an
outstanding raconteur and technician. With the deft and diligent editor (P S
Bharathi) tailoring the past to merge fluently into the present, and Binod
Pradhan's camera capturing Delhi and its surroundings as a character rather
than cities, Mehra's job of bringing the past into the same line of vision as
contemporary India, is rendered inevitable and unforgettable.

RANG DE BASANTI is an extremely ambitions film. It tries to educate the
generations in Independent India who have brought the country to its current
crisis of moral and political corruption. But it never gets hysterical or
polemical, thanks to Prasoon Joshi and Rensil D Silva's conversational yet
penetrating dialogues.

Mani Rathnam attempted the same theme in a different less dramatic light in
YUVA. Rakeysh Mehra goes many steps ahead. He blends historical events from the
past (e.g the massacre by Britishers at Jallianwala Bagh) with today's
newspaper headlines (the MIG war-planes scam). The film-within-a-film format
(earlier attempted in films as diverse in language and intent as Karel Reisez's
THE FRENCH LIEUTENANT'S WOMAN and Mrinal Sen's AKALER SANDHANE) gives the
narrative the texture of a life lived in layered luminosity.

Not for a second does Rakeysh Mehra falter in his vision. The story of today's
youth, their lack of connectivity with their past, and the prevalent moral
degeneration of the nation, could quite easily have lapsed into a
holier-than-thou jingoistic exposition.

RANG DE BASANTI works wonderfully and exceptionally as both a political
parable and a spanking story on the scars of the times. In the fusion of fact
and

[arr] FullHyd reviews RDb

2006-01-28 Thread Gopal Srinivasan

  Rang De Basanti

Rang De Basanti is a bohemian movie, one that deals with an unexceptional story
in an avant-garde way. As you watch, the monochrome of hackneyed patriotic
fervor is split through an unforgiving prism into dazzling shades. It’s like
attacking your enemy from behind. All the cliché and the mythology stays, yet
the sensibilities are dealt with so well, you are in tearful admiration. The
battle is won.

Sue (Alice Patten) is a British moviemaker, who comes to India to make a movie
about the Chandrasekhar Azad, Bhagat Singh, Bismil, Ashfaq coterie. Her
grandfather is the English jailer who walked them to their hanging, and it is
his diary she wants to reproduce on the screen. She zeroes in on the gang of DJ
or Diljeet (Aamir Khan), Aslam (Kunal Kapoor), Karan (Siddharth) and Sukhi
(Sharman Joshi) to play the parts.

The youngsters, though, are far removed from the hot-blooded patriots she
expected. High on beer most of the time, they are dancing and whiling their
lives away, to the tune of A R Rehman’s electric number Paathshaala. They
practice the dialogues in the midst of slaphappy mockery and mischief, while
Sue is watching their antics half-amused and half-distraught.

Sonia (Soha Ali Khan), looking fresh and tender, plays the link between Sue and
the group. Her boyfriend is Ajay (Madhavan), a MIG21 fighter pilot with the
Indian Air Force.

The story-telling technique is impressionist, with images and music creating
the mood, rather than the dialogues. Racy, quick images of students tearing at
top speed on their bikes are followed by a red car, to create the boisterous
mood. And a lighthearted fluttering song plays out the love of the newly
engaged Ajay and Sonia. The flashing images, sudden-stills technique is fun -
it amuses the audience for one thing. And the heavy Punjabi dialogues that
punch like a danda swiping a gilli right across a narrow village gully, are
part of the intoxication of Rang De Basanti.

What happens next is the sudden death of Ajay in a plane crash. He is an ace
pilot, and the cause of the accident is substandard Russian parts that have
found their way to India through corrupt deals with the Defence Ministry.
Instantly the tides turn, as the government attacks the skills of the pilot to
defend its own shady deals. DJ’s group is shattered.

This is where Rang De Basanti takes on a revolutionary look, an unconventional
turn. DJ’s gang suddenly takes matters into their own hands, and a
juxtaposition of the group’s behavior, analogy for painfully precise analogy
with the freedom fight events, is shown. This is the movie’s highlight.

While the build-up after the interval is suddenly as slow and leisurely as a
glob of oil-paint dispelling in water, it picks up when the plot breaks through
again. This time it makes you brain cells jog, watching the surreal déjà vu of
events. And yes, young blood fighting for an altruistic cause, with their lives
does break your heart effectively.

Finally, needless to say, Rang De Basanti is one movie where the script
completely subsumes the characters. Every element plays equally, like it would
in an epic like the Lord Of The Rings. The cast, the music, the visuals, the
dialogue, the whole movie in fact, is a vast mosaic of all these, a whole that
is not propped up by one or two of its parts alone.

Aamir shines, but so do Siddharth and Kunal and Soha and the rest. Like we
said, the script plays around with all the characters rather than revolve
around a single one. And yes, watch out for the music by Rehman. It is the
spirit of the movie - the engine that synchronously propels it, keeps it
afloat, or sinks with it gracefully. When you leave the theater you will at
least be intellectually satisfied, even if not emotionally stirred. A movie
that can do both, and perhaps stand scrutiny both ways, is definitely going to
be one to reckon with.

Re: [arr] From Where can I download RDB BGM

2006-01-28 Thread V S Rawat
Saw RDB.

What a lovely movie. One of the most original and creative
story and screenplay. Enjoyed every moment of it.

It is a kind of movie for which you would ignore any minuses
it had, and only pluses remain with you once you come out of
the hall.

I do not exactly like such pop hip pop music, but I think
that ARR has been giving good quality music for quite a few
years for the likes of me, so it is ok that he creates music
for today's gen-x once in a while :)

The BGM is also very good.

I would like to download a few snippets of RDB BGM,
especially the one of Jalianwala Bagh (1st instance) when
that crying/ howling aalaap is there and where that boy
weeps on the screen.

Has anyone uploaded it somewhere?

Or, could anyone please arrange the same for me.

TIA.

[arr] Well I think it's time to focus on the music of RDB a bit more!!!

2006-01-28 Thread Anujit
Hi,
Now that RDB has released my take is very short and sweet:
1.It's a cult film made for today's generation
2.It's an awesome and brilliant piece of direction, excellent
camerawork.
3.Amazing performances by the starcast
4.It's gonna be a surefire superhit..i am student of IIM,Lucknow and
believe me in the past 3-4 days ppl have seen more than twice this
film including me..the whole campus is buzzing with Rang De Basanti
all over and in all the hostels the songs are being played with full
gusto..So i thnk the public mood in general can be gauged by this as u
know the average age of a movie goer is like 20-35 years and so i thnk
the film has already generated a huge response and is on it's way to
become a massive hit...Some proof on last count 91% recommendation
from 46 reviews on mouthshut.com
So i thnk the movie part is done now let's talk abt the music after
the film has released:
Well being an ARR fan and also for the others this was a real treat
for cinegoers...what a score and the ppl who were lashing out at the
music must now remain silent since it is nothing less than a
masterpiece...it is very difficult to compose songs which gels so well
into the narrative...ohh gr8!!!When the casting was being shown it
started off with a remixed version of Khalbali Hain Khalbali..boy i
was just blown over by this amazing piece...believe me i think SOny
BMG should consider to take out a version which contains this remixed
version..believe me it will rock the entire nation instantly..a huge
potential chartbuster..i hope they come out with a full version of the
track..
Parts where i really felt the music was so appropriate
1.Khoon Chala sang by Mohit Chauhan..wow the picturisation and the apt
feeling of the song got heaps of praises and people started to clap in
the hall
2.Paathshaala:initially i felt there was no place for the remixed
version but the way it fitted with guys moving around in the jeep was
so natural
3.Roobaru:What a timing of this song..Can u think of any other song at
that point of time when the youth decided to take on things
seriously..so inspiring yet so youthful
4.Luka Chupi:Well tears will automatically roll down when you hear
this song where a mother is in front of her son's dead body...ohhh it
was so emotional and touching...
5.The full fledged song to be picturised is the title track so
colourful and an enjoying experience...great piece of choreography and
nice bit of camerawork
6.Tu Bin Bataaye:Absolutely romantically picturised...especially when
the male vocals start and look at the picturisation...in one
word:Heaven
BGMS
1.Well all of them were brilliant but the best part was when the
transitions were taking place from the past to present..Mr. Rahman was
blending the freedom struggle music with a passionate youthful score
with the present..I challenge which MD can do this in India if not the
world??
2.When the guys first meet after Waheeda Rahman goes into
comma..absolutely inspring...
3.The music when the past was being juxtaposed with the present where
all the characters were being shown to be freedom fighters..ohh a
great composition...
guys i am really finding it difficult to find words to describe my
experience when i was relating the music with the movie...it's really
difficult to explain it transfers you to a completely different
world...
Only 2 minuses:
1.Khalbali song was relegated heavily into the background:this is an
amazing composition and it was shown very little in the movie..i thnk
Mr. Mehra could have taken a gamble in picturising this song
separately..there wd have been a huge cheer in the audience thts for
sure..
2.I missed the Alaap of the Luka Chupi song one of the highlights of
the track
Anyways i am not complaining they r just my observations since the
director is the best person to judge.
But overall guys just focus a bit more on the music when the film
unfolds i am sure it will make an everlasting impact on you and make
you feel what a talent our maestro is...Hats off to you Mr. Rahman and
thanks a lot for this refreshing and passionate experience:
Waiting for your comments and feedback:
Regards,
Anujit
N.B.:Go an watch the movie at the earliest...

[arr] is BOSS happy!

2006-01-28 Thread innocentankit

 hi,
saw the film rang de basanti i think the director has used
the songs very wellbut one thing is for sure that most of the
songs were more used like a background score.and was really
disapointed for the fact that pathshala , lukka chhupi, roobaro was
not played fully,,
though it was heartening to see the crowd getting rocked with
pathshala being played and also humming the song ROOBARO along...
i think the SALES OF rang de basanti will surely rise after the
release of the movie as is the case generally...
and another question to be asked is WHETHER RAHMAN must be happy
with the space given to these superb songs in the movie...

[arr] Galatta.com votes this A SUPERB EXPERIENCE – GO SEE IT!

2006-01-28 Thread Devi
Review

It's young, it's restless, it's inspiring, it's funny, it's hip, it's
colourful, it's realistic, it's dramatic… it's a MUST-WATCH!

Yes, Rang De Basanti is a beautiful blend of a gamut of emotions and
stories and inspiration. It's a story of the re-awakening of youth
today; of how a group of young men with not a care in the world learnt
from the life of 4 dynamic Indian revolutionaries during the British
Raj – Bhagath Singh, Chandrashekhar Azad, Ashfakulla and Ramprasad Bismil.

Let's look at who's who:

Sue (Alice Patten) is a seeker – of truth, courage, values and
everything important that is now lost in this world today. She finds
and reads through the personal diary of her grandfather who was a
British soldier in India during the Raj, a correct, stern officer torn
between duty and conscience. He records his experiences and thoughts
on the revolutionaries – admiring them, respecting them, yet unable to
speak out because of duty. Sue then decides to come to India and make
a film on these freedom fighters. Earnest, dogged, determined (she
even takes Hindi language classes); she arrives in Delhi, is swept
away by her friend Sonia and HER friends. In her weeks and months, she
discovers friends, friendships, insights into the minds of great
Indian freedom fighters and true love.

Sonia (Soha Ali Khan Pataudi) is the group's pet. Smart, optimistic,
righteous – she is probably the only focussed person among the entire
bunch of pranksters she's friends with. A student of the International
Studies, she helps her friend Sue find the right actors for her
documentary.

DJ (Aamir Khan) is Diljeet. And he's exactly like his name suggests –
always devil-may-care, always out for a good time, sweet, charming,
hilarious and not a single focus in life. Other than having a good
time with his friends. As he tries to help Sue out (while losing his
heart to her) by playing the part of Chandrashekhar Azad, something
changes in him and he is a new man with a mission.

Karan Singhania (Sidharth) is a troubled young man from a mega-rich
family. He has lost something precious in his life, including the zest
to live among the colours of India. He is dispassionate yet disgusted
with the India of today and can't wait to finish college and leave for
the U.S. As he learns more about the Indian Freedom Revolution, it's
as if the spirit of Bhagat Singh himself (whose character he plays)
awakens him and he sets out to do right by his motherland.

Sukhi (Sharman Joshi) is a sweetheart. He's a baby; he's hilarious,
doomed to single-status and devoted to DJ. A Jat from Haryana,
complete with the accent and the reluctance to speak in English, he's
a breath of fresh air in the entire group – and playing a serious
character for Sue's movie brings out the intensity of the real comrade
in him.

Aslam (Kunal Kapoor) is tall, dark, handsome and a poet at heart. He's
part of an Orthodox Muslim family struggling to maintain its identity
and goodness in a world that's filled with prejudice today. Trying to
fit into a society which the members are sure they are not really
accepted. But Aslam wants no part of all this – he is beyond religious
boundaries. It's his friends and time with them that's important. So
much so, that he finds his own family atmosphere suffocating and his
friends his closest family. Playing the role of Ashfakulla opens his
ears to the reverberant poetry that lifted the will and spirit of the
revolutionaries in the pre-Independence era.

Lakshman Pandey (Atul Kulkarni) is a radical Hindu activist who wants
to wipe out anything NOT Swadeshi – western dhichk dhichk music, the
wantonness of youth today and Muslims. The strength of his beliefs
brings to Sue's mind Ramprasad Bismil, who, along with Ashfakulla, was
pivotal in Bhagat Singh's endeavours. Being the group of friends,
living their lives and watching people he believed in let him down
opens his eyes to his follies; like his prejudice and hatred of Aslam.
He realises, from the way he starts to feel about Aslam, how Bismil
felt about Ashfakulla.

Flt. Lt. Ajay Rathod (Madhavan) – well, the cast list shows a guest
appearance, but this particular guest was perhaps one of the most
important characters in the film. Ajay is everything good, kind,
right, courageous and patriotic. Lover and fiancé to Sonia, he is a
firm believer in the goodness that is within India and how it is OUR
responsibility to do something about the ills of this country. In
fact, one can even say that without Ajay, the awakening of the
others would never have happened.

This movie is a perfect mix of Indian dramatism and western realism.
Picturisation is slick and the dialogues beautifully meshed and
delivered. One would think Aamir would have hogged the limelight. No
way. The amazing thing about this movie was that each and every
character was so strong, one could not have done without the other.
Aamir is, as usual, perfect in his delivery and emoting. A.R. Rahman's
music is simply wonderful – his

[arr] Mind Power Music

2006-01-28 Thread sriharsha24
Hello all,

Guys if u r listening to recent BGMs you may want to observe this. The
BGMs which are more melodious always has birds chirping in the
background (padayappa, jeans, indian, boys).

I remember when I and my friends were preparing for IIT exam, there
was some craze about the Mind Power Music. I was told it would help
relax and concentrate more and also relieve stress. I heard that music
and its nothing but again chirping of birds and waterfall sounds.

Well, I think thats the reason we all love his music. If anyone is
aware of mind power musiclet me know what u guys think.

[arr] Funny note on wasim's Indian BGM

2006-01-28 Thread sriharsha24
I was listening to voiceless BGM's of Indian that Wasim posted. All of
them are soothing to hear. My fav. is Ash's intro.

Now the funny part. For the BGM numbered 17, the file is labeled as
I'll return before santoor gets over. Obviously he meant sindoor.

At first glance, didn't understand wat santoor was doing in the movie.
Then I recollected the scene and thought so. Well, the emotional scene
in the movie turned a little funny;)

But great job wasim!.

Keep coming

Bye
Harsha

2006-01-28 Thread Manish Jagpal

Hey friendsGot to see first day last show RDB. This movie ripped me and my heart off and apart what a life time experience The BGM was so much real ROCKY; the story is really awakening It is full of comedy in first half while I wept like rain out of my eyes
in the second half wept so much for the first time in my life; movie is a revolutionaryshock.Surprising effect of movie is that you develop reduced desire for loose control and amplified interest in khalbali and roobaroo The meaning of the songs totally changed after watching themBox office is already on fire I am speechlessManishManish

[arr] RDB will be hit

2006-01-28 Thread Ravi d

Now RDB is out there are more postive reviews than negative. I had been
to forum @ Bangalore to watch it second time and could hear ppl saying
it was a good movie esp the youths. The generation has
awakened? The crowds' response was good great. AS far I cud see
most of them felt the movie and was a kind of new experience to them.
Now after the movie the music has gained more importance so we all fans
has a moment to be happy for the past couple of years we had seen that
though the music by ARR was amazing the movies' disaster also trashed
his efforts. But RDB is one such that it will contribute a lot to ARR.

[arr] ARR getting lots of praise......makes me happy

2006-01-28 Thread Ajit
If you look at most of the reviews, apart from some monkeys like Taran
Adarsh (who are entitled to their own opinion), ARR is lauded heavily
for the music score. Although most songs are played up to one stanza
or relegated to background, it appears that music has impressed many
and I am so happy for ARR about this. Also happy to read that the
songs have hit number 1 on many countdown charts

Hats off to the maestro.well deserving.and it's good to see an
ARR film and soundtrack promoted so well after a long time and being
appreciated almost universally.

Re: [arr] Well I think it's time to focus on the music of RDB a bit more!!! + TARAN ADARSH

2006-01-28 Thread Thulasi Ram

it really great to hear the real feelings from ur heart when it comes to OUR genius's music. true rendition, absolute gel with the film is the success of the whizkid. at this point, i would also like to metion mangal pandey was even a musical score for the film but somehow it was not spoken about because of the backbone of the film was withering.

as u said, those who were lashing abt RDB, especiallt that IDIOT taran adarsh ahould turn his head 180 degrees and shouldnt make filthy reviews atleast from now. this film's sucess and music's himalayan success is definitely a nose-cut to some uncooth reviewers like taran adrash.

p.s: sorry for using some vulnerable words. according to me, i think the words i have used for taran adarsh is the minimum attacking words i was able to found. my heart ebbs out with REAL strange words when it comes to that IDIOT.

those who havent taken a look at that guys review, read his review in indiafm.com. u will definitely know how insane his thoughts and reviews r. he does everything for money, that's what i heard. what a human he is cant digest his review(both musical and movie reviews)till now.

Hi,Now that RDB has released my take is very short and sweet:1.It's a cult film made for today's generation
2.It's an awesome and brilliant piece of direction,excellentcamerawork.3.Amazing performances by the starcast4.It's gonna be a surefire superhit..i am student of IIM,Lucknow andbelieve me in the past 3-4 days ppl have seen more than twice this
film including me..the whole campus is buzzing with Rang De Basantiall over and in all the hostels the songs are being played with fullgusto..So i thnk the public mood in general can be gauged by this as u
know the average age of a movie goer is like 20-35 years and so i thnkthe film has already generated a huge response and is on it's way tobecome a massive hit...Some proof on last count 91% recommendationfrom 46 reviews on
mouthshut.comSo i thnk the movie part is done now let's talk abt the music afterthe film has released:Well being an ARR fan and also for the others this was a real treatfor cinegoers...what a score and the ppl who were lashing out at the
music must now remain silent since it is nothing less than amasterpiece...it is very difficult to compose songs which gels so wellinto the narrative...ohh gr8!!!When the casting was being shown itstarted off with a remixed version of Khalbali Hain Khalbali..boy i
was just blown over by this amazing piece...believe me i think SOnyBMG should consider to take out a version which contains this remixedversion..believe me it will rock the entire nation instantly..a hugepotential chartbuster..i hope they come out with a full version of the
track..Parts where i really felt the music was so appropriate1.Khoon Chala sang by Mohit Chauhan..wow the picturisation and the aptfeeling of the song got heaps of praises and people started to clap in
the hall2.Paathshaala:initially i felt there was no place for the remixedversion but the way it fitted with guys moving around in the jeep wasso natural3.Roobaru:What a timing of this song..Can u think of any other song at
that point of time when the youth decided to take on thingsseriously..so inspiring yet so youthful4.Luka Chupi:Well tears will automatically roll down when you hearthis song where a mother is in front of her son's dead body...ohhh it
was so emotional and touching...5.The full fledged song to be picturised is the title track socolourful and an enjoying experience...great piece of choreography andnice bit of camerawork6.Tu Bin Bataaye:Absolutely romantically picturised...especially when
the male vocals start and look at the picturisation...in oneword:HeavenBGMS1.Well all of them were brilliant but the best part was when thetransitions were taking place from the past to present..Mr. Rahman was
blending the freedom struggle music with a passionate youthful scorewith the present..I challenge which MD can do this in India if not theworld??2.When the guys first meet after Waheeda Rahman goes into
comma..absolutely inspring...3.The music when the past was being juxtaposed with the present whereall the characters were being shown to be freedom fighters..ohh agreat composition...guys i am really finding it difficult to find words to describe my
experience when i was relating the music with the movie...it's reallydifficult to explain it transfers you to a completely differentworld...Only 2 minuses:1.Khalbali song was relegated heavily into the background:this is an
amazing composition and it was shown very little in the movie..i thnkMr. Mehra could have taken a gamble in picturising this songseparately..there wd have been a huge cheer in the audience thts forsure..
2.I missed the Alaap of the Luka Chupi song one of the highlights ofthe trackAnyways i am not complaining they r just my observations since thedirector is the best person to judge. But overall guys just focus a bit more on the music

Rang De Basanti --- Wake Up Indians
I am no expert in writing the reviews, but after watching the movie yesterday,I felt that it was my responsibility to write the review about this movie which had a message not only to youth but also to a common man.
Rang De Basanti—Most Expected movie of Year2006.An AamirKhan movie,Directed by Stylesh Rakesh Om Praksah Mehara with Music by Genius A.R Rahman. So There is not only Hype on this movie but also Huge Loads of Expectatations and Hopes.

3.MindBlowing Background score and Songs 4.Superb Direction but shud say that there looks like touches of maniratnam5.Great Comedy..Will Appeal to all ages6.One of Best Climax of the movie i have ever seen
Minus Points:1.As a Music lover and a Big fan of rahman,I found it that except title track rest of songs were situational and they come only for say 1min or so2.First Half Though it has good amount of comedy, confuses u..but u understand those in 2nd half of movie
Believe me..These Minus points I had to think a lot and write…According to me..This movie is must watch If you don't understand the message conveyed in this movie, there is no better way to tell the message that this film has conveyed.
Stars of This Movie…
(I have Ranked them..as they have played a major part in making this film fantastic)1.Rakesh Om Prakash Mehra(Director)—Hats off to him as he has conveyed a great message in superb style.
2.All the Actors..From Siddharth,Aamir to Soha..Each and every character has been a revelation..3.A.R Rahman and Prasoon Joshi—This combo has played one of major role..Brilliant Background score,Awesome songs accompanied by Masterfull Lyrics by Prasoon

[arr] Hindustan Times reviews RDB

2006-01-28 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
Rang De Basanti Director: Rakeysh Mehra Cast: AamirKhan, Siddharth,
Sharman Joshi, Kunal Kapoor, Soha Ali Khan, Atul KulkarnI Verdict:

W e have one foot in the past and one in the future but we are peeing on
our present, says DJ (Aamir Khan) in Rang De Basanti. As crass as that may
sound, it pretty much hits the nail on the head.Kamlesh Pandey’s
storyand Rakeysh Mehra (Aks) and Rensil D’Silva’s screenplay have set the
foundations for a remarkable and commendable film. In an age of cheap
imitations and blatant plagiarism, in a time of creative drought and vulgar
consumerism, it is heartening to see original, responsible and sincere
cinema.
Set in Delhi, focusing on a group of carefree students reconciled to the
state of the nation and most concer ned only about their next beer and paratha,
the film traces the coming of age journey of five friends. DJ has been out of
college five years but is too afraid to face adulthood; Karan (Siddharth) is
the angry young son of a rich businessman, an introvert but fiercely loyal;
Aslam (Kunal Kapoor) is tor n between moder nity and tradition; Sukhi
(Sharman Joshi), whose one ambition is to lose his virginity; and Sonia (Soha
Ali Khan), an idealist engaged to the righteous F lt Lt Ajay Rathod (Madhavan).
To this g roup, party politics means debating which beer to order and finding
the next whisky bar. In contrast is their adversary, Laxman Pandey (Atul
Kulkarni). His motivations are upholding Indian values and traditions, through
a saffron tint.

The entry of British filmmaker Sue (Alice Patten) into their lives is like
setting a cat loose among pigeons. Ar med with her g randfather’s diary, which
documents his experiences when he served as a police officer during the British
rule in India, Sue’s project is to make a film on the Indian revolutionaries
through a reenactment of the events recorded in the diary. In DJ, Karan, Sukhi,
Aslam, Sonia and Laxman she findsherChandrashekhar Azad, Bhagat Singh,
Rajguru and so on.

Shifting between sepia tones of the past and current day colours, through the
film within the film for mat parallel stories unravel as the experiences and
principles of the revolutionaries in 1930s British India begin to awaken the
complacent youth of today. Triggered by the crash of a MiG21 and the political
cover up that follows, the cast of Sue’s film are roused from their complacency
and find a mission which leads to a radical, violent and unsettling climax.

Though the film addresses apathy, deeprooted corruption, failure of
the system and patriotism, the end does not justify the means. Violence and
murder and the doctrine of an eye for an eye cannot be condoned, and depicting
the law as having zero accountability is rather exaggerated.

Having said that, Rang De Basanti is a brave ef fort that spares no punches.
It’s a film you cannot be indif ferent towards. Mehra puts together a
technically fantastic team where each department, especially cinematography
(Binod Pradhan), music (A R Rahman), styling (Arjun Bhasin, Lovleen Bains),
other than story and screenplay stand out. A big thumbs up to the casting too.
A true ensemble cast, which is led by Aamir Khan, but not dominated by him —
credit to him for staying in character and having the grace to give the other
actors space to make a significant impact. The performances are a revelation
and the actors from different linguistic regions (Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, the
South) merge effortlessly.

Rang De Basanti is a hopeful film, perhaps not for the state of our nation,
but certainly for the state of our film industry. Thank god for originality and
for the courage of the filmmakers’ convictions.

[arr] Khalid Mohammed reviews RDB

2006-01-28 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
Kabhi wrong de, kabhi right de
   Khalid Mohamed
 Rang de Basanti
Cast: Aamir Khan, Alice Patten, Siddharth, Kunal Kapoor
Direction: Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra
Rating: ***
It takes as much guts as madness to do a Rang De Basanti – an anti-Authority
tract which assigns full marks to wayward youth, and a big round zero to
wrinkly-crinkly ministers, politicians and armament wheeler dealers. Welcome
to India where “everyone is looking for excuses to kill one another.” Indeed.
That’s writer-director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra badland which is so fiercely
feverish that you might need a thermometer to check your fluctuating
temperature. At times you’re elated by the Mehrathon, at times you’re brain
boggled. Aah, it’s one of those: a quasi political diatribe which leaves you
with conflicting feelings. Errr, have you been tossed around like this before?
Sure, you have. Jeepers creepers Jeetendra performed the same tooth-for-tooth
tango in Jyoti Bane Jwala, anger banger Amitabh Bachchan mowed down MPs in
Inquilab, and hello, the concept of art coalescing into reality was evidenced
in Jesus of Montreal directed by Canada’s Denys Arcand. Never mind, that was a
million matinees ago. Time to do it again, let’s-a-go-go.
Auspiciously, the first hour or so is kick-ass. A gang of losers hangs out at
the campus canteen, cadges parathas at a dhaba, and grumbles about how life’s
a bitch.
Spotted by Sue,an idealistic documentary film-maker (Alice Patten) from
Britain, the dhaba dudes (Aamir Khan and party) are cast in her video-opus on
the legendary freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Chandrashekhar Azad et al. Once
young nationalists took on the British Raj, now the amateur actors are poised
to take on Delhi’s power elite.
Terrific, you’re concerned. Since a twist in the plot is imperative, the dhaba
squad’s buddy (Madhavan in a wig), an MIG test pilot, crashes to his death.
You can detect the real life allusions, but but but, Miss Britain’s
documentary is discarded like tissue paper.
Now the revenge formula hubbles, bubbles, toils and troubles. All hell breaks
loose, hurtling towards a finale that’s as believable as a protest march by
Alaskan penguins. Really, if Kamal Haasan exposed the evil deeds of politicos
at a TV tower, the Basanti boys do it at an Akashwani studio. Mirchi masala
anyone?
The miyan boy (Kunal Kapoor) connects, at last, with the Hindu fundamentalist
(Atul Kulkarni), their hands touching like Laila-Majnu’s. The rich kid
(Siddharth) answers queries from the nation at large, the supposed hero (Aamir
Khan) is reduced to a security guard. Lady Britain is stuck in a puttering
vehicle, the pilot’s bereaved fiancée (Soha Ali Khan Pataudi) tends to her
coma-struck would-have-been ma-in-law (Waheeda Rehman, lovely as ever). And so
what started out with a bang concludes in a bang-bang-bang-destruction spree.
Gee.
The wrap-up is an enormous problem. A major part of RDB, however, is
commendable especially for its technical bravura. Binod Pradhan’s
cinematography makes sumptuous use of the north India locations. The editing
is sharp but pray, why allow so many ramping shots?
The dialogue is clever (“Gandhi sells but Bhagat Singh doesn’t,” coos a London
ki aunty..but what was all that about Sue kar mere man ko?), and AR Rahman’s
music is A-grade.
Of the cast, Aamir Khan is infallibly impressive, particularly in the
self-questioning passages, like his emotional talk at a dining table.
Siddharth from Chennai is first-rate, often stealing the scenes coolly. Kunal
Kapoor is likeable, Atul Kulkarni as the fundamentalist-turned-revolutionary is
competent. The only sore thumb, Sharman Joshi, hams till it hurts. Alice
Patten and Soha Ali Khan are correctly natural and restrained.
With all its pros and cons, RDB may not be a perfect piece of scripting or
film-making. It has its mega-flaws but then who’s perfect nowadays? Go for it.

[arr] Deccan Herald reviews RDB

2006-01-28 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
 Rang De Basanti
 Angel Rani
Hindi (U/A) (PVR Cinemas, Innovative, Rex, Swagath, Anand Cast: Aamir
Khan, Siddharth, Kunal Kapoor, Sharman Joshi, Soha Ali Khan, Atul Kulkarni,
Alice Patten Director: Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra

The suspense was lost much before the release of Rang De Basanti. Wrong.
There is a lot more in the film than the MiG tragedy to keep one staring,
screaming, laughing, crying and clapping in 3 hours precise.

It is after a long time that you get to watch a film which is worth your money
and muscle power at the ticket counter.

Meet the gang of five:

Aamir (DJ) — the high-voltage Punjabi who races, boozes, fights, dances and at
times sings those gems of 70's.

Sharman (Sukhi) — the butt of most jokes who fears he will die a virgin.

Kunal Kapoor (Aslam) —the lone Muslim in the gang who is loathed by his family
for his 'Hindu friendships'.

Karan (Siddharth) — Minister's son who hates politics, higher studies abroad
and his mobile when it shows 'dad calling'.

Sonia (Soha) — the 'woman power' of the group who is engaged to a flight
lieutenant (Madhavan in a cameo). Then comes Sue (Alice Patten) from London,
armed with the diary of her grandpa who was an officer in pre-independent
India. Sue is in Delhi to make a documentary about the freedom struggle based
on the characters in the diary — Chandrashekhar Azad, Bhagat Singh et al. What
follows is an audition round which keeps the laugh-o-meter rolling. It is truly
hilarious as Sonia and Sue try to squeeze out at least one genuine talent from
the young crowd of hysterical 'actors'. Sue's search ends in AamirCo. She sees
her characters in them and convinces the fivesome to act in her film. By the
way, Sue speaks bearable Hindi and slides into Aamir's heart. Hence you have a
smitten Aamir 'remixing' oldies like Sue kar mere man ko.

Then happens the MiG crash (the row over which delayed the film’s release by a
week) and the friends are at the crossroads.

The rest of the plot might seem a bit amateurish and farfetched — the murder of
a minister, the final moments at a radio station and the TV coverage. But you
pardon them for the other wonderful, entertaining moments.

Aamir is a delight and so is the rest of the cast, especially Atul Kulkarni.
Soha finally gets a chance to prove her genes. Alice too proves that she hasn't
taken the wrong bus to Bollywood.

Go watch it. You will not come back complaining.

[arr] The Indian Express reviews RDB

2006-01-28 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
Movie Reviews
 Shubhra Gupta
New Delhi, January 28: Rang de Basanti
Cast: Aamir Khan, Atul Kulkarni, Sharman Joshi, Kunal Kapoor, Sidhharth, Soha
Ali Khan, Alice Patten, R Madhavan, Om Puri, Waheeda Rehman, Anupam Kher,
Kirron Kher
Director: Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra
Five young men, affiliated loosely to the University of Delhi, drifting along
the standard college trip, no class, only canteen, in search of self— Rakeysh
Omprakash Mehra’s Rang De Basanti is a beautifully shot rites-of-passage film
which talks to you. And that’s the film’s biggest strength.
It could have spoken much more effectively, if the director hadn’t messed up in
the climax. A British documentary filmmaker arrives in New Delhi, in search of
her chosen characters from the Indian freedom movement, and meets up with the
group, the five guys and their gal pal. The latter’s dashing pilot fiance dies
in a crash, trying to steer a faulty MIG to safety.

The tragedy galvanizes the reckless five into drastic action. So far, pretty
good. And then the script has the friends kill India’s defence minister, and
from there on, Rang De... spirals out of control. Shooting corrupt politicians
dead, as a last recourse to justice, may be smart populist strategy, guaranteed
to get the taalis. But this implausible strand nearly kills the movie, making
it less than it could have been.
Why, when you have such a wonderfully real story and characters, hammer in a
misguided message?
Permanent undergraduate DJ (Aamir) is scared to step out in the real world.
Poor little rich kid Karan (Siddharth) is headed for an MBA stamp from the US
just as soon he acquires a degree. Sukhi (Sharman Joshi) lives in fear that he
will die a virgin. Aslam (Kunal) a poor Muslim shayar is constantly being
sledged, both by his family for mixing with the ‘‘other’’, and by the fifth of
the group, Lakshman (Atul), who carries out the paashchaatya sabhyata ke
vipreet Hindutva aandolan, at the behest of his saffron-dhaari leader. The
romantic twosome of Sonia (Soha) and Flt Lt Ajay Rathod, act as the idealistic
fulcrum— all these are people we have known, or could run into.
The cynicism that the five friends exhibit is also something young people
identify with. When Karan says, is desh ka kuch nahin ho sakta. Aisa hi hota
raha hai, aisa hi hoga, there is a ripple of recognition in the packed theatre.
And when another says saare politicians ko line mein khada kar ke goli maar
deni chaahiye, or words to that effect, there is, dangerously, an approving
roar. Mehra and his scriptwriter have found the pulse of much of the metro
youth across much of India, in the way they make their characters speak and
act.
Where the movie gets all heavy is in the re-creation of the past, and where it
goes from there. The parallels filmmaker Sue (Alice) draws between the lives of
Chandrashekhar Azad, Bhagat Singh, Ramprasad Bismil, Ashfaq, Durga Bhabhi and
the rest of the krantikaaris, start off nicely by offsetting today’s
self-absorbed I-me-mine generation against the selfless sacrifices of those
long-ago young men, who died for their country. This kind of lush pop
patriotism goes down better with the target audience than the starker sort
shown in, say, Lakshya, also a coming-of-age film. But the constant long
intercuts between then and now become too pat. And, the end, with machine guns
rattling and the gang perishing gorily (can’t bump off people and live to tell
the tale, can we?), the action caught live on television, is embarrassingly
juvenile. This is Mehra’s second film after Aks, which died at the box office.
This time he has carefully assembled some of Bollywood’s best and
brightest, to get some things just right. The
doomed-rebels-who-finally-find-a-cause are well-etched. Aamir’s delightful
Daljit aka DJ, the life and soul of the group, flubs his Punjabi accent only
once in a while. We seem to be getting used to Brits talking in tongues— Alice
Patten’s Hindi is not bad at all. The line-up of some new and almost-new bright
sparks like Sharman Joshi, Kunal Kapoor and Sidhharth works just fine, as does
the support of the veterans.
There is also a dazzling array of talent behind the camera. Kamlesh Pandey’s
story is strongly contemporary, Binod Pradhan’s camerawork is outstanding,
Prasoon Joshi’s lines and lyrics are funny and pithy, and A R Rahman ’s
soundtrack rocks the party.
Despite its problems, Rang De Basanti, resonates. But did Mehra have to
substitute the India Habitat Centre for Delhi University? Coming from a DU man,
that’s sacrilege.

Re: [arr] is BOSS happy!

2006-01-28 Thread V S Rawat
From: innocentankit [EMAIL PROTECTED]

  hi,
saw the film rang de basanti i think the director has used
the songs very wellbut one thing is for sure that most of the
songs were more used like a background score.and was really
disapointed for the fact that pathshala , lukka chhupi, roobaro was
 not played fully,,
though it was heartening to see the crowd getting rocked with
pathshala being played and also humming the song ROOBARO along...

Yeah, I also noticed people warming up and cooing at the
start of pathshala music. I felt very happy to see our man
getting his due.

Last time I had noticed such a waming up was in Dil Se's
Chayyan Chhayan.

i think the SALES OF rang de basanti will surely rise after the
release of the movie as is the case generally...
and another question to be asked is WHETHER RAHMAN must be happy
with the space given to these superb songs in the movie...

Well. As his fan, I am happy with overall effect of songs
and BGM in the movie. So, I think that the director has
wisely used the required quantity of songs.

[arr] Is this a big threat to RDB success?

2006-01-28 Thread Ajit
New Controversy Threatens ´Rang De Basanti´

While the 32 crore Aamir Khan starrer 'Rang De Basanti' has opened to
an excellent city and multiplexes response ,after overcoming two major
(by now well known) controversies , a third one is round the corner .
No , we are not talking about the two day old pirated CD seizure at
Bombay's airport , something that the media has been highlighting on
and on .

According to sources , an objectionable slogan on the posters of the
movie is drawing the wrath of the sikh community . Both , the 'SGPC'
('Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee' )and the 'Jathedar' of the
'Shri Damdama Sahib Nandgarh' have reacted strongly to it .

While the posters show Aamir Khan on a horseback , the other side has
the lead actors of the movie embracing each other . However, the sikh
organisation have taken exception to what is written in Hindi and
Punjabi (in bold letters)at the lower side of the poster - Raaj
Karega Khalsa .

'SGPC' media secretary G.S. Bedi and Jathedaar of the 'Shri Damdama
Sahib Nandgarh ' (Talwandi ), Balwant Singh have called it a matter of
great concern and called for a ban on 'Rang De Basanti' as it ammounts
to an isult of the entire sikh community . What must be kept in mind
is that the same organisations were successful in getting Sunny Deol's
'Jo Bole So Nihal ' banned .

[arr] The Hindu reviews RDB

2006-01-28 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
More than just black and white

Rang De Basanti (Hindi)

Director: Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra

Cast: Aamir Khan, Kiron Kher and Om
Puri

FIRST THINGS first. At the end of
the adrenalin-packed fare, the title Rang De Basanti strikes you as absolutely
evocative: a plea to the season of spring to dab our lives with colour too. The
refrain Naye rang bhar de, khoon chala, khoon chala is a poignant reflection
of our times.
At the outset, the foursome (who go on to become five) seem as happy-go-lucky
boys. They seem more than content in their cocooned worlds of fun, frolic and
friendship (Masti ka Paatshala). The layered narrative, underlined by a deep
sense of hopelessness, soon tells you that their cosy, happy world is
make-believe one, an escape from a dismal world of disappointments. (Aslam: Is
ghar mein mera dam ghut ta hai.) Of course, they are completely unlike the
upmarket threesome of Dil Chahta Hai, whose concerns are markedly different.
History driven by ideology seems the last thing the restless, SMS generation
wants to worry about. But when they reluctantly become part of a documentary on
Bhagat Singh and friends, their lives move to a different plane. Laxman Pandey,
their enemy, who gets drawn into the group because of the documentary, is the
only one with a pronounced ideology: Hindutva. For this unusual young man, who
knows his history, but is driven by warped notions of tradition, the big blow
comes when he realises that ideology is only a pawn in the politics of
opportunism. Laxman Pandey becomes the perfect metaphor for the present times:
of an appropriation by a system with its own agenda at work, with no qualms
about casting aside what an individual believes. It is, however, ironical that
he plays the character of Bismil Ramprasad, the committed freedom fighter in
the documentary, who wrote with the Muslim pen name Bismil. The film is
brilliant (editing by Binod Pradhan) for the manner in which
it coagulates a past with a present, creating images of powerful contrasts. It
at once juxtaposes a world of beliefs with a world that is completely lacking
in it; a world which was governed by the larger cause of the country, to a
world that swears by individual happiness. It also creates contrasts of many
other kinds, the manner in which the film builds the characters of Kiron Kher
and Om Puri. Both these individuals are completely governed by their faith,
their religion. While for the former (a Sikh) religion is a source of strength
that has an enormous space to accommodate everyone, the latter (a Muslim) looks
upon every outsider as an object of threat. But what redeems him is the fact he
is a victim of his circumstances, his insecurity thereby assuming legitimacy.
Like him, every character is a well-rounded one, including the lean, mean,
British police officer who tried Bhagat Singh and comrades.
It would be unfair to call it an
Aamir Khan film, because each actor has put up such a brilliant performance.

Kulkarni, Madhavan and others At: PVR Rated: 6/10

Initially, Rang De Basanti looks as
directionless as the youths it projects. It goes through life much the same way
as its protagonists who drive through a haze of alcohol, brawls, meaningless
but funny stag talk and unemployed desperation which lurks so beautifully in
the hued eyes of Aamir Khan.

It looks at life through his fears of living
life without an aukaat, his rich friend's cynicism that there's nothing that
can save the country and all roads lead to the West, his Muslim link who hates
his ghettoised existence, his fighter pilot friend who would give life for this
nation and a Hindutva element who learns by and by how there's nothing pure
about ideology.

But despite their insecurities and inherent
cynicism with a rotten system, they paint the town red in the night and spend
their mornings pulling each others' leg about the chicks they would never get.

Mehra does well to weave this about-to-explode
inertia into his frames, so much so that you wonder half-way through, again
much like the Aamir brigade, as so where is everything leading and whether it
is leading anywhere at all. You can call this a drawback or you can applaud the
director's innovativeness in completely supplanting the situation of his
characters on the ambience of the movie.

Director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra is known for
his love for high octane drama with a hyperlink to staccato editing and
crescendo music. Rang De Basanti is all these three put together but with an
added topping: It has an issue to discuss - a serious issue which faces the
nation as much as it does its young generation - the issue of a rotten system
and corruption in high places.

Mehra's effort is actually a ditty on how
nothing really has changed from those days of oppression under the British Raj.
If India wheezed under the British 50 years ago, it is equally asthmatic to the
'system' 50 years hence.

If General Dyer did it at Jallianwallah Bagh,
leaders of sovereign India do the same at India Gate. So is there a silver
linging or is it no light at the end of the tunnel. The former, actually, which
means even today there is a Chandrashekhar Azad, a Bismil, an Asfaqullah Khan
and a Bhagat Singh in our future citizens.

Only there, needs to be a potent trigger to
channelise their energies into a revolution against the system. Mehra's
half-dozen do so. But again, much like the youthful disdain to reason, they
mess it up in the end. And this time it is not because they emulated Azad and
Co. But because they fell into the hands of a confused director who leads them
into the biggest mess of their oterwise funfilled life. So does RDB carry a

A still from ‘Rang de Basanti’
THE most awaited film Rang De Basanti opened with a
bumper opening on January 26 at Batra Chandigarh, Fun Republic and KC,
Panchkula.
UTV productions’ Rang De Basanti is being promoted in a big way on TV
Channels. The director Rakeysh Omparkash Mehra, who had made his debut with
Amitabh Bachchan, Manoj Bajpai and Raveena Tandon starrer Aks, has put together
Aamir Khan, Madhvan, Atul Kulkarni, Sharman Joshi, Kunal Kapoor, Soha Ali Khan
and British actress Elis Patten in this well directed film. This one is a
cool-n-hip flick with a strong rustic background.
The filmmaker Rakeysh Mehra, had earlier named it Aahuti and it was written for
Junior Bachchan. However, the title of Aahuti was changed to Rang De Basanti.
Waheeda Rahman, Kiron Kher, Om Puri and Anupam Kher have come up with fine
performances. Aamir Khan is superb. Soha Ali Khan and Elis Patten are totally
likeable. Sharman Joshi, Madhvan and Kunal Kapoor have done justice to their
characters. Kamlesh Pande has written the script for director Rakeysh Mehra who
has dealt with many current issues in the film and that too in a very sensitive
manner. The ensemble of actors put in good performances, which are the value
add-ons.
Rang De Basanti has lyrics by Prasoon Joshi who made waves for his good work in
Hum Tum. The musical score by A.R. Rahman is a clear winner hands down. The
compositions may be liked by today’s generation. Bhangra king Daler Mehandi is
in top form with the song Rang De Basanti. On the whole it is a different movie
by Rakeysh Omparkash Mehra. His fans can count on a few thing from this film a
sensitive storyline, exquisite visuals high quality music and excellent
performances from its main players. On the whole Rang De Basanti is the watch
of the season.

hmm i hope not, because this is hopefully a small matter since it is
only a sentence on a poster. in jo bole so nihaal there was a whole
issue in a scene from the movie. besides i think the cast and crew of
rang de basanti will do whatever it takes to keep in theatres if such
an issue will arise. lets pray to god that nothing happens because i
truly think that rang de basanti is hit in the making.

[arr] New Indian Express reviews RDB

2006-01-28 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
Review: Rang De Basanti

We couldn’t Aks for more...
The New Sunday Express - January 29, 2006

After a strangely dissatisfying debut, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra strikes back
with three of the finest hours of commercial Hindi cinema.

Every film – at least, every film made with a vision – has a moment, a
blinding-flash moment, that hotwires you to its creator’s brain, making the
various pieces fall instantly into place. That moment in the extraordinary Rang
De Basanti occurs in pre-Independence India, when a British jailer informs the
patriot Ram Prasad Bismil that he’s to be sent to the gallows. Just one scene
earlier, we’ve seen this jailer at church, kneeling before Jesus, and now,
after he delivers this news, Bismil consoles him that it’s not his fault, that
he’s only following orders. Without that preceding reference to religion, you’d
think Bismil is saying this, perhaps, to make an I’m-ready-to-face-death
statement, but now it’s clear that he’s absolving his killer of sin – like
Jesus did. (“Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.”) In other
words, director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra is all but lighting up neon signs that
those who fought for our freedom are
gods; and what he leaves unsaid is that, in not remembering them today, we’ve
all become atheists.

That’s a madly audacious, madly ambitious conceit – and it’s only fitting for
this audacious, ambitious movie that contends that our corrupt System today is
every bit as enslaving as the British of that era, and that the only hope for
freedom is for us to become believers again. But what’s even more startling is
that Mehra doesn’t want us to kneel at the altar of Gandhi and Nehru. (If
Ashutosh Gowarikar had made this film, perhaps that would have been the case.)
Instead, Mehra makes his most subversive – and controversial – argument through
Sue (Alice Patten), a filmmaker in London who wants to make a documentary on
the lives of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Chandrashekhar Azad, Ashfaqullah Khan,
Durga Vohra and, yes, Bismil. (Sue’s grandfather was that British jailer; his
diary is what inspires her.) Her bosses ask why she doesn’t do something on the
Mahatma instead, because, “Gandhi sells.” But of course she rejects that idea
because if she didn’t, she
wouldn’t be espousing Mehra’s belief, that the need of the hour is not an
apostle of non-violence but a committed group of rebels.

So Sue lands up in India to make her documentary, and she finds her cast in an
unlikely group of Delhi University students (and ex-students) – Diljeet (Aamir
Khan), Aslam (Kunal Kapoor), Karan (Siddharth), Sukhi (Sharman Joshi), Sonia
(Soha Ali Khan), and Lakshman (Atul Kulkarni). (This is a completely
agenda-based screenplay, so you can’t miss noticing that this motley bunch is a
metaphor for a micro-India. There’s a Sikh and a Muslim, both middle-class;
Karan is the son of a richie-rich businessman, and Lakshman, true to his name,
is a saffron-brigade hardliner.) These are good guys – Diljeet signals Karan to
stub out his cigarette when in the presence of Diljeet’s grandfather; so things
like respect for elders are in them – but they, like most of us, display a
shocking indifference to our history. (They probably think Bhagat Singh is the
name of the hero in a Rajkumar Santoshi movie.) But as they participate in the
filmmaking process, enacting their roles,
mouthing their characters’ lines, they learn not only to appreciate their
past, but also to anticipate their future. And just as the nation woke up when
Bhagat Singh, Azad and others became martyrs, our heroes are galvanised into
action when one of their own becomes a shaheed – thus justifying the film’s
patriotic title and its passionate opening voiceover. (“Jo desh ke kaam na
aaye, woh bekaar jawani hai.”)

Rang De Basanti moves seamlessly between the past and the present – that is,
between the past being reenacted by those from the present and, well, the
present – and there’s a terrific cue that alerts you early on to this
structure. When we see what looks like archival footage of freedom fighters
being hanged, AR Rahman – whose songs perfectly underscore the blistering
youngness that is this film’s chief character – fills the soundtrack with
heavy-metal electric-guitar blasts. I flinched at first at this disastrous
anachronism, but I think this is part of the movie’s strategy to make the past
a throbbing, dynamic entity that’s very much connected to the present. What
Mehra is saying is that just reading history from textbooks may not be enough.
You need to experience it, you need to live it! And then you’ll see that if the
villains then were the British, the villains now are in our corrupt System –
and it’s a supreme irony that this realisation comes
through the efforts of Sue, a Brit! (Mercifully, the scenes involving corrupt
politicians are kept to a minimum. Even if we didn’t read

These days, if a film has a message and purpose, it deserves some kudos-even
if, like Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s latest Rang De Basanti, the end product
turns out to be a well made but muddle-headed mess.
Taking inspiration-inadvertent though it may be-from films like Hindustani,
Dil Chahta Hai,
Yuva and Lakshya, Mehra fashions a 17-reel ode to how young people can be
useful to the Motherland! Noble intentions then, goading the beer-guzzling,
lukkhas of Delhi to arouse their patriotic genes and ‘do something’;
unfortunately that ‘something’ is not just dangerous, it’s counterproductive.
Then, he justifies this unthinking populism by saying that if Bhagat Singh
could kill for the country, so can you, young man! But even in a flawed
democracy, violence cannot be offered as a solution to corruption or any other
public  misdemeanour.
That apart, Rang De Basanti has several other problems, the frequent shifts to
the sepia-tinted Bhagat Singh footage is one-at least Indian audiences are
familiar with the story of the young revolutionaries from text books, TV,
documentaries and five feature films. Using Bhagat Singh as a catalyst for
the awakening of a dormant conscience is pointless. The boys in the story
could be affected by the death of their friend and the subsequent cover-up by
higher-ups without this fake goading from history.
To summarise the plot, Sue (Alice Patten) motivated by the diaries of her
grandfather who had seen Bhagat, Azad, Rajguru and their band of freedom
fighters suffer in jail and die smiling, comes to India to shoot a documentary
on them. Even when her bosses nix the project, she decides to do in on her
own (how does she raise funds for the lavish period recreation?).
Her Indian contact Sonia (Soha Ali Khan), introduces her to DJ (Aamir Khan)
and gang, whom she immediately casts in the film. Poor little rich boy Karan
(Siddharth) as Bhagat, DJ as Azad, girl-crazy Sukhi (Sharman Joshi) as
Rajguru, angst-ridden Aslam (Karan Kapoor) as Ashfaque Khan, Sonia as Durga; a
Bajrang Dal type Laxman Pande (Arul Tiwari) muscles into the role of Bismil.
That done, they fool about some more, Pande and Aslam glare daggers at each
other, and the film keeps cutting to footage of Sue’s documentary (it looks
more like a feature!).
It’s well into the second half when Mehra finally comes to the point, and Rang
De Basanti becomes a different film. Enthused by the spirit of the
revolutionaries they have portrayed, the overgrown ‘Boys’ take on the corrupt
government that caused the death of Sonia’s fiancé (Madhavan), the earnest and
patriotic fighter pilot Ajay Rathore. (This bit is inspired by real life
incidents of pilots being killed in faulty MIG planes). But in the days of
aggressive TV news reporting, why would they choose a radio station to convey
their message?
The story progresses in a slow, jerky fashion, with very little attention to
character development, but taking little unscheduled stops at DJ’s mother’s
(Kirron Kher) dhaba, Pande’s party office, Aslam’s cloistered house with
father (Om Puri, wasted) and older brother demanding why he has Hindu friends,
Rathore’s home with strong mother (Waheeda Rehman) talking of what it’s like
being an army wife. None of which add anything to our understanding of the
Boys.
Perhaps, the film has also come a little too late-India today has a booming
economy, young people are very focused, and unworthy politicians have been
thrown out via the electoral process. Of course, there is a huge class of
underprivileged poor but that problem tacked in Swades and Shikhar is not an
issue here.
If at all, the film is saved by the technical finesse, a couple of Rahman’s
songs and the performances-Aamir Khan, with perfect Delhi lout accent, living
the role of a boisterous but insecure bloke; Atul Kulkarni radiating
intensity, Karan Kapoor and Siddharth mirroring the confusion of youth.
