[arr] ARR - Wake Up Michigan Concert
Different and never-seen-before are not exaggerations when it comes to this concert. It was an unbelievably amazing concert. I don't think there are enough words that can describe the feeling I have right now after attending such a beautiful evening. Yes, it was different and definitely a first for all lovers of ARR. Here was a group of 150 All Stars who were all set to perform ARR's songs. It all began with an unplugged rendition of 'Ramta Jogi' and believe me, it was a gorgeous performance. It was not what you would expect. Reason: Except for a few, all the performers were white. (Excuse my lingo) I could not believe what was happening in front of my eyes. They were singing in hindi, tamil, urdu, english. Yes, they sang in an accent but you could not fault them. They were just as much in tune as you would expect any professional singer to be. The energy levels on the stage and the audience were skyhigh by the time ARR took stage. About ARR : What can I say? Here is one man who has once again shown his calibre. He says music has no barriers, no language. Tonight, he proved it completely. I don't think there is any one else in the music industry, arguably, who can do what ARR has done in this concert. There were different versions of a lot of songs. And a great song selection. One thing that clearly stood out once again, is the fact that Dil Se and Vande Mataram still remain the most requested songs. It's as if no concert is complete without these songs. Another first in this concert was that ARR actually performed 'Zikr'. Once again, words fail me when it comes to explaining how it felt to hear Global Rhythms and ARR in tandem. I will not list the songs as someone has already posted it. I must mention that though there were no big singers and dancers at this concert, ARR was present on the stage nearly all the time and he was, very clearly, enjoying every single second just as we were. There is nothing I can say that will do justice to what this concert was and how it felt to be present in such an ambience. This is one night I will always remember. It was different...Not knowing what to expect from this concert as it was not to be a regular ARR one, I was a little wary to start with. But the energy that the Global Rhythm/Miami university students brought to the stage pretty much comforted me right when they started the show with a modified "Ramta Jogi". This was a Global Rhythm show where they played Rahman's compositions and Rahman himself honored their efforts by participating in it. The song selection was superb although not everyone may agree with me. Some of the songs that I remember..(not necessarily in the order in which they were performed) 1)Ramta Jogi 2)Yaaro Yaarodi (Vasundhara Das) 3)Veerapaandi Kottayilae 4)Khalbali (ARR) 5)Lose control 6)Ek Onkaar (Vasundhara Das) 7)Rang De Basanti (the Global Rhythm singer's energy when he sang this song was infectious and could give the likes of Shankar Mahadevan a run for his money when it comes to stage energy) 8)Raasathi 9)Thee Thee (Vasundhara Das) 10)Shakalaka - BD version - (Vasundhara Das) 11)Zikr 12)Dil Se (ARR) 13)Dakka Lakka Bukka (ARR sang a little bit) 14)Dol Dol 15)An instrumental/vocal medley including "Bombay awakens", Nahin Samne, Ghanana Ghanana, Mangal Mangal, aalap by Srinivas Krishnan (ARR on keyboards and Sekar on cello) 16)Instrumental - Vanessa Mae's Raga Dance - (Melissa Reiner on violin V.R Sekar on Cello) 17)Global Rhythm's own composition of what apparently was loosely based on Rahman's scrap melody picked up by Srinivas Krishnan/Kevin Lambert (a student who spent a couple of months in Chennai at ARR's studio) 18)Chale Chalo 19)Rang De Rang De (original song played and choreographed on stage) 20)Some Jadhi recital by Srinivas and Kevin 21)Vande Mataram (ARR) G Ramkumar was there. He also spoke of LoTR as a different experience. While talking about his family, at one point, he referred to his mother as his 'business partner'; I didn't understand what he meant by that. It would have been something to listen to Rahman sir weave his magic in the song. I had the chance to listen to him play for the first time, when he played in En Uyir thozhiye in Kangalal Kaidhu Sei. It was as if the Raag Durga just flowed through to his keyboard. Fluid. Total bliss for about... how long I dont remember.. but it was one of the best Durga-s I have ever heard. More than singing for him, I wish I could be the fly on the wall and hear him play. I have heard it a couple of times, but as a rasika, I really long to hear more of that. if only words could translate music.. Neat song and lyrics. The remix of the same song is sung by Tanvi and Naresh. This is one song where the remix sounds better than the orriginal. This song is also a statement of Naresh's brilliance. "Kaatril oru vaarthai" sung by SPB, Sadhana and Reena reminds one of the music of many old melodies. A song that brings up Goan memories is "Dinam Dinam". "Theeyil vizhunda" is based on Sufi music. This is a song where the music takes the listener to great heights using rhythm and then suddenly brings them down to blend beautifully with the lyrics. The song that has been created in three different ways is "Innisai". Sung by Srinivas & Naresh very differently, this song deserves a special mention. This is probably the best song among the lot. A song that anyone can listen to and enjoy. hi what to call u, whether unbreak or fire, give ur name, friend !!
