[arr] Bollywood's mystery voice
-- ed carpet and all the cameras and everything, and Omneya looked at me and said, `I feel like I'm going to throw up.' The two headed for the washroom. Afterward, Tollar decided to take the girl home but when she went to say goodbye to the others, security guards wouldn't let her through. All of a sudden I'm just â Who are you?, she says. Finally we found an exit into a back alley.--- hmm.. they should have let her in.. lol, after all the song is fantastic! Bollywood's mystery voice Email Story Email story PrintPrint Text Size Text Size Text SizeChoose text size Report Typo Report typo or correction Email the author Email the author Tag and Save Tag and save Powered by Delicious Blogs go crazy after legendary composer taps Toronto singer for opening dance number in Guru January 27, 2007 john Goddard staff reporter The first sign something unusual was happening came three months ago when an Indian journalist asked for an interview. It's huge, the reporter said. People are blogging you like crazy. Internet users were debating Cairo-born Toronto singer Maryem Tollar and a song she recorded in phonetic Hindi, a language she doesn't speak. Locally, Tollar is known to a loyal but limited audience for her evocative renditions of classical Egyptian songs. Internationally, she was being discussed for her lead vocals on Mayya Mayya, a hot opening dance number to the Bollywood blockbuster Guru. The film celebrated its world premiere in Toronto this month, but in India the soundtrack has been out for weeks. I checked, Tollar said at her midtown home a few days ago in her cheerful way. I typed in `Maryem' and `Mayya,' and saw hundreds of blogs. I would say the majority seems to love it, but there are a lot of people who say the accent bugs them. In the Bollywood film world, it is possible to be famous and anonymous at the same time, Tollar says. She would know. Her brush with the industry began two years ago when a friend introduced her to A.R. Rahman, one of the Indian film industry's top composers. He was in town from Madras to help with the stage production of The Lord of the Rings and needed extra backup vocals for a film soundtrack he was also working on. Tollar took the job for a set fee and the film Rang De Basanti (Print it Yellow) duly appeared last year. She heard little more about it. The next time (Rahman) came to Toronto, he got me to improvise some melodies for another song, Tollar says. He didn't have lyrics but the shape of the song was coming together. By their third meeting, Rahman had lyrics. He had also recorded the music and backup vocals â everything except the main melodic line, which he wanted Tollar to sing over top of everything. A native Hindi singer wouldn't do, he said. The scene was to be set in Istanbul. Curvaceous Bollywood beauty Malika Sherawat was to be scantily dressed in what might pass as belly dance attire and he wanted a foreign flavour to the song â in Hindi but Middle Eastern sounding. Tollar speaks several languages but not Hindi. Rahman speaks Tamil. As a voice coach, he hired Devika Mathur, a local radio host who arrived three years ago from Mumbai and became a contender on Canadian Idol. In terms of pronunciation, I was surprised by the number of different `r's they have, Tollar says, and some of their consonants have aspirations at the end, a little `ah' sound. For the `p' they have a shorter stop. It finishes differently. Really subtle things but people notice them because they can make a difference to the meaning. So they would get me to do things over and over again â `tah, tah, tah,' to the point where after a while I didn't know whether I heard a difference or not. Mathur would teach Tollar a phrase. She would practise it. Then Rahman would record it and they would move on to the next. They finished the number in a single session, again paid at a flat rate. I didn't memorize the song and I wouldn't be able to sing it to you now, Tollar says. But large numbers of Bollywood fans would be. Mayya Mayya is a huge hit. The video promoting the movie features the song, easily found on the Internet. Bloggers consistently name it and Barso re as the film's two best. Rahman is like a demi-god in India and people memorize his songs even before the movie comes out, Tollar says. Knowing she had become a household name to Bollywood fans, the singer decided to attend the premiere. The romantic leads Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan were to be there, along with Rahman and director Mani Ratnam. When Tollar called and identified herself, she was told she could buy a $350 ticket for $250. Instead, she waited until Rahman arrived. He called at 4:30 p.m. on the night of the gala and said he could get her in. Just come to the hotel, he said. Tollar's 5-year-old daughter Omneya wanted to come, too. At the hotel, they met the director and cinematographer, and rode with VIPs in a limousine to the Elgin Winter Garden Theatre. We got there, Tollar

Dear Fans Sorry to ask about this here. I know this is ARR's forum. This is also best place to get to know about Speakers ..., when it is for music for the fact i read from old messages, even technical issues related to music acoustics discussed previously. There are Creative 2.1, 5.1 etc.. but the said model from Creative 2.0 called Gigaworks T-20. I prefer to get this to get the best sound in 2.0 range models as thats enough. But it is not available even in places like bangalore, bombay, chennai etc. I know its very much available in singapore and the indian distributors import creative multimedia spkrs from them and sell here with ONE-YEAR WARRANTY SERVICE but not this said model. Those who are here, please check with your end guide me where can i get this model in india with warranty service issues. If i swipe it from abroad i cannot claim warranty here and the cost will also be more. Or if you are sure it wont be available in india, kindly suggest best branded multimedia speakers with only 2 speaker options (2.0) equivalent to the above model thats available in india. Thanks in advance. Regards Shwetha - Never miss an email again! Yahoo! Toolbar alerts you the instant new Mail arrives. Check it out.

[arr] [Semi-ARR] Bollywood Gets Ready to Take On Hollywood
Bollywood Gets Ready to Take On Hollywood Indian Movies, Full of Song and Dance, Poised for Crossover Hit By MADHULIKA SIKKA Jan. 14, 2005 - The Golden Globes kick off the Hollywood award season this weekend. But for billions of movie fans around the world, it is not Hollywood, but Bollywood that produces the biggest stars and the biggest movies. Watch the Nightline report Friday at 11:35 p.m. ET. Bollywood is the name given to the Hollywood of India, the huge film industry based in Bombay, India's movie capital. Some 1,200 films a year are produced in India, the vast majority of them in Bombay. They are a big draw not just in India, but across much of the globe -- though not in the United States. I would say what soccer is to sport, Bollywood is to entertainment, said Richard Corliss, a film critic for Time magazine and a self-confessed Bollywood fan. That is to say, it's only a minority taste in the United States, but throughout the Indian subcontinent, in North Africa, the Middle East, Asia straight through to Indonesia, large parts of Eastern Europe, it's the most popular form of entertainment in the world. Corliss added, It's best to think of Bollywood films now and forever as Hollywood films of the '30s and '40s, where there was a huge industry disgorging 1,000 movies a year back then, as Bollywood does now. A Musical Experience So what, exactly, is a Bollywood movie? Well, they're usually long -- about three hours -- and chock full of plot lines, music, dance -- just about anything that can go in a movie. It's designed as full-on, total entertainment for the Indian audience, for the masses, says director Mira Nair, who included a Bollywood dance number in her recent Hollywood film Vanity Fair with Reese Witherspoon. Satisfying everybody is the general goal of conduct with a Bollywood film, Nair said, adding that the genre's films must have drama, car chases, huge amounts of romance, always great amounts of music, and preferably a little danger, a little villainy, to keep the balance going. And, of course, no Bollywood film would be complete without several great dance numbers. It doesn't matter what the topic -- the political tensions over wartorn Kashmir (recent hits Main Hoon Na and Lakshya), melodramatic family sagas (Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham), or an E.T.-like alien befriending a mentally challenged boy (Koi Mil Gaya) -- a Bollywood viewer is guaranteed great song and dance numbers. The entertainment spans genres, too. If you're a Bollywood dancer, not only do you have to know Indian classical dancing, Indian folk dancing, Indian contemporary dancing, but you also have to know Western styles, too, said Bollywood dance instructor Nakul Dev Mahajan. You have to know hip-hop, you have to know jazz. You have to have some other worldly training, whether it's ballet or whether it's salsa. The music is hugely popular in its own right. Bollywood's leading composer, A.R. Rahman, is reputed to be the biggest-selling artist of all time. According to some standards, he has sold over 150 million copies of the albums of the movies that he writes the songs and the scores for, which would put him above the Beatles, any Britney Spears, Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, said Corliss. Hrithik Roshan, one of Bollywood's superstars, is hugely popular across the globe and finds himself mobbed wherever he goes in public. He said Bollywood films are really a reflection of India's culture. All our films are musicals, music is a very big part of our culture, and everything that we do is somehow -- every emotion is expressed through song and dance, he said. So Roshan doesn't think it's a little out of the ordinary for the terrorist he plays in Mission Kashmir to break into song before heading out on a murderous mission. Why not? he asked. Every man, even though he's going through the worst possible stage in his life, has some space for music in it, at any given time. Global Appeal India has a population of more than a billion people -- plenty to support the world's most prolific film industry. But the legions of fans spread well beyond the borders of India and the South Asian subcontinent. Indian movies have become Top 10 hits in countries where the Indian diaspora has spread. In the United Kingdom, which has a significant South Asian population, Indian movies routinely appear in the Top 10 box office lists. Since the fall of the Taliban, Afghans are again enjoying the melodrama provided by Bollywood, whether in the cinema or on bootleg videotapes (video piracy is a problem not just for Hollywood producers.) Heading West A big moment for Bollywood was when the 2001 American film Moulin Rouge featured a techno-music remix of the hit Bollywood song Chuma Chuma. It was like, 'Wow. We've arrived. We're coming,' said Mahajan. So it was really cool to see that. Another turning point was when Devdas, starring Rai, made a huge splash at the Cannes film festival in 2002.
