Dear Chennai Rahmanaics,

Off late, I have been getting messages stating that I along with a group of
people have been selfish in grabbing a chance in meeting ARR on His Bday.
Let me be very clear in stating that, we never knew we would be able to meet
ARR till the appointed time. There have been a lot of hard work which has

We never wanted to do this noble deed with an ulterior motive of meeting
ARR. We always thought that ARR would be happy to know through some source,
that we celebrated his BDay in a noble cause. The meeting with ARR was a
miracle, and a bonanza, and was possible with the assistance of some senior

[arr] Singers wishing ARR on his BDay

2008-01-08 Thread Vithur
http://www.india-forums.com/tellybuzz/article.asp?id=1635

The name A.R.Rahman needs no introduction. The man, who redefined
contemporary Indian music, is the pride of the entire nation and an idol for
millions all over the world needs no preamble. On his 42nd Birthday, here
are few of the singers who have worked with him closely paying tribute to
this great man.

For Rahman, music is not just a profession but 'a spiritual experience'. He
has built up a repertoire of scintillating scores and has become a national
icon. He is also arguably the most well known Indian composer of popular
music internationally.

Mahalaxmi Iyer:

I always consider him a one man army in today's scenario. Here is a man who
composes the entire scores for a film, he designs the sound, composes the
melody and even at times sings the songs. He knows technology in and out but
he never looses the feel of the song or music thus making sure to keep the
soul of the song intact. Working with him is so much pleasure as he gives
lot of freedom for creativity. He himself is a very spontaneous artist and
expects the same from ones who work with him. All I can say is he is a
wonderful Music Director but more than that he is a wonderful human being. I
wish him the best on his Birthday.

Naresh Iyer:

As a music director I think he just creates magic. He has that capacity and
magic to extract the best out of you. You yourself will never get to know
that you are capable of such heights. All the time he would be giving you
confidence and never let you down even when you may find you are unable to
sing some scores perfectly. While working with him you will realize that he
becomes your guide, friend and what not. The comfort zone is wonderful. I
would say it's a wonderful learning experience working with him. It's
nothing but learning and learning. May we get to see him for years and years
to come giving us such soulful music!

Sweta Pundit:

What do I say about Rahman Saab! When I was growing and wanted to get into
singing or take music as profession he has been the greatest inspiration. I
have grown up listening to his music. I still remember during my board exams
before leaving for the exam I would always listen to his music. They used to
soothe me a lot, free me from all the tension. And when I started
interacting with him on Mission Ustaad I told him that his music really has
the healing power. I truly feel blessed that I got to come across and
interact with a person like him. He is one of the finest human being I have
met in my life.

Rahman is one of the most humble, modest, shy, low profile, unassuming,
self-affacing, devout and down-to-earth person. A man of few words he
believes in letting his work do all the talking. The man has given immense
pleasure to millions of music lovers world-wide with his compositions, music
that brings a cheer to one's face and helps in forgetting one's troubles. On
his 42nd Birth Year we wish him many more musical years and pray may he give
us more and more such soul stirring music.

. Sadly there was not even a single scene shown on that song in the first

[arr] My first impressions of Jashn E Bahar and Azeem O Shan

2008-01-08 Thread Chord
Couldn't resist listening to the songs in full on Youtube. I'm going
to wait to listen to these songs on CD before fully judging, but based
on what I have heard, Azeem O Shan is a first rate Rahman
composition. The Rahman magic is there...quintissential Rahman at his
best here. Very powerful track. One of the finest Rahman
compositions in recent times. I liked Jashn E Bahar as a soothing,
melodious number, but nothing spine chilling or goose bump inducing
yet. Found the magic a bit subdued. Found it a bit banal music wise,
but quite rich lyrically wise. Perhaps a grower for me. I do love
the first musical interlude, however, Very classy and acoustic.

BTW, someone has pointed out that the promo for Khwaja Mere Khwaja,
the Qawali sung by Rahman, is now showing on MTV.

[arr] Missing ARR's extended intros

2008-01-08 Thread Chord
Dislcaimer - Please not that the contents of this post are not meant
as a slant to ARR nor to offend anyone here.

I immensely enjoy all of ARR's music from the begining to now, but one
thing I've noticed over time is his de-emphasis on extended intros to
his compositions. Previous to his current generation of compositions,
ARR's intros to many of his songs were much more elaborate and drawn
out, gradually building the height and anticipation to the main
compositional melody of the song. Listen to Khamosh Raat from
Thakshak for example, E Ajnabi from Dil Se, Taal Se Taal Mila from
Taal, Yenna Solla Pogirai from Kandukonden Kandukonden. All with
beautiful gradually building intros that set the mood for the song,
which slowly lifted you to the main body of the song. Most of his
songs today I notice lack that intro elaboration and begin the main
body after only a few stanzas of rhythms and chords. Not that he
avoids this completely today, but there is a de-emphasis of this.

[arr] ARR IN A DARGAH AT KADAPPAH - A.P

http://www.siasat.com/english/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=233344&Itemid=63&cattitle=Andhra%20Pradesh

Kadpa, January 08: Music maestro A.R. Rahman Tuesday announced that he would
soon set up a music school to scout for new talent.

'It has been a long time dream for me. I think the right time has come now,'
he said after visiting the Ameen Peer Dargah, a Muslim shrine in Kadpa town,
about 400 km from here.

Though a formal announcement will come only after three months, Rahman said
he was receiving a lot of encouragement and support from various people for
the project.

Rahman, whose latest compositions for Ashutosh Gowariker's 'Jodhaa Akbar'
will be released on Jan 9, expressed his best wishes for Telugu superstar
Chiranjeevi, who is planning to join Andhra Pradesh politics.

'I wish Chiranjeevi all the best,' said Rahman.

Accompanied by his family members, Rahman offered a 'chadar' at the shrine
he visits every year.

A staunch devotee of the saint who is said to have come from Bidar in
Karnataka 400 years ago, Rahman has been popularising the shrine among the
film fraternity. In November last year, actor Abhishek Bachchan and his
actress wife Aishwarya Rai had offered prayers at the dargah.

These were shared by Raihana during the show :-

The song " Motti Vidatha " in Pavithra was actually supposed to figure in

was composed and placed in Pavithra .

Andrew Lloyd webber used to be very fond of ARR, and always used to wish ARR
on new Year, ARR's Bday without fail every year. He allocated a place in his
kitchen , where ARR used to keep his instruments and do the practice and
composition for Bombay Dreams .

Ashutosh Gowarikar. (TOI Photo)

Ashutosh Gowarikar's much-awaited epic romance Jodhaa Akbar has
suffered a major set back due to Ashutosh's back ailment. Hence, he
has converted his office into a studio so that AR Rehman, music director
of Jodhaa Akbar, can work from here.

The director was scheduled to be in Chennai for this entire week to
finish the background score of the film but could not move out because
of strict instructions from his doctors. Meanwhile, Rehman is known to
work only from his studio in Chennai but has agreed to come to Mumbai to
complete the assignment.

A source says, "Ashutosh has transferred his personal room into a
post-production recording studio where Rehman is finalising his
background score. Rehman and Ashutosh Gowarikar are so passionate about
the music of Jodhaa Akbar that the two also went to the Ajmer Sharif
Dargah before recording the song ."

Hi Aadhi

Rahman's only kannada movie till date is "SAJNI", but ARR has rendered a
kannada song in Taj album in his own voice.

Apart from that, other Kannada MDs have lifted ARRs Muthu tunes for the same
film which was remade in kannada under the name of "SAHUKARA".

Superstar Rajinikanth to work with director Shankar and A R Rehman in the
next mega-budget film (TOI Photo)
CHENNAI: Robotic Rajnikanth? That's what ace-director Shankar is planning to
make of the superstar. Even as fervid fans continue to queue up to
watch Shivaji
- The Boss , which was released in June 2007, Shankar has signed up with
Rajnikanth and music director A R Rehman for the next mega-budget film, Robot
.

Ayngaran International and Eros multimedia, which would jointly produce the
film, promise to make it even more attractive calling it a "hi-tech film"
that would be made using "state-of-art technology". Sources in the film
industry said the director is still in the process of finalizing the other
cast and technicians.

"We are trying for someone like Deepika Padukone or Priyanka Chopra to
co-star with Rajni. Nothing is official as yet. The film is expected to have
a lot of graphics and new techniques. Most of the film would be shot
abroad," said a source.

So will the film too cross the Rs 80 crore budget? "Going by the present
plan it looks like it. It could touch at least Rs 100 crore," he said. The
filmmakers will borrow techniques from renowned film-makers abroad and
introduce them to the Indian film industry. The shooting will commence soon.

[arr] KM MUSIC CONSERVATORY

2008-01-08 Thread Vithur
http://www.indiafm.com/news/2008/01/08/10706/

Music Maestro A.R. Rahman brought in his birthday last Sunday (January 6).
While other stars prefer to either throw a bash or celebrate with friends on
their special day the normally shy music-director had other plans.

He fulfilled one of his long term dreams to launch a music conservatory on
Sunday. The institution named KM Music Conservatory will be India's first
Apple authorized training centre where professors and musicians from India
and abroad will provide training and education to students in Indian and
Western classical music.

The institute located in Chennai, will also help in fine-tuning the skills
of students who play instruments like flute, trumpet, violin, French horn
and percussion. Needless to say there will be more career options open for
these young talented kids once they combine their musical skill with the
latest knowledge in production technology.

Through this institute, Rahman would also fulfill his vision of having a
full-fledged orchestra in India so that Indian composers don't have to go
abroad when they have to record with orchestras.

Must say this initiative by Rahman is indeed one unique way of giving back
something to the world of music.

MUMBAI: Well-known composer A R Rahman has opened a school to train
promising musicians in Chennai, a newspaper reported on Tuesday.

Rahman said he felt the need for a school to teach talented musicians
production and technology skills.

``I have finally opened my music conservatory,'' he said. ``In the coming
months we will have students and singers training in performances and
production.''

One of India's leading composers, Rahman produced the music for the stage
version of J R R Tolkien's trilogy ``The Lord of the Rings,'' for Andrew
Lloyd Webber's ``Bombay Dreams'' and songs for more than 120 Bollywood
movies.

``Having the knowledge of both music performances and music technology is
invaluable,'' Rahman was quoted as saying. ``The skill to perform an
instrument combined with production capabilities will ensure many more
career opportunities.''

He said he also hopes the school will nurture gifted musicians who could be
part of an orchestra that he dreams of starting.

``Indian composers usually travel abroad to record with orchestras. My
vision is to provide an orchestra in India,'' Rahman said.

[arr] EROS PRODUCES ROBOT

2008-01-08 Thread Vithur
http://www.indiaglitz.com/channels/hindi/article/35753.html

Eros produces Rajini's next
 IndiaGlitz [Tuesday, January 08, 2008]

Eros Multimedia produces south Indian superstar Rajinikanth's next movie
directed by Shankar. It will be a joint venture with Ayngaran International.
*Music wizard A. R. Rahman will be roped in the project that is planned to
be made in a whooping budget of one billion rupees. *

Robot is all set to become grand and entertaining film ever made in Indian
cinema. The movie will be simultaneously produced in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu
and other languages. Robot will have the state-of-the-art technology.

Eros International is an established global player in the fast-growing
Indian media and entertainment arena. It has built a successful business
model around the release of 30 new films every year and has film library
containing more than 1,300 titles, making it one of the largest content
owners in the business. Eros has the possession of the distribution rights
for films including 'Devdas', 'Om Shanti Om', 'Munna Bhai MBBS', and
'Partner'.

Eros is now producing and co-producing around 70 films in Hindi with leading
artists such as Shah Rukh Khan and Hrithik Roshan.

Ayngaran, the co producer, has been the pioneers in Tamil Film Distribution
in theatrical and home video formats in the International Market. The
History of Ayngaran business dates back to 1987 when it had the vision to
acquire the International Rights across formats of many Tamil films that
became blockbusters. The Ayngaran library has over 1500 films including
'Sivaji', "Padayappa', 'Chandramukhi', and 'Indian'.

Director Shankar is considered as one of the leading commercial directors in
India today. It is worth recalling that his latest offering Sivaji,
featuring Rajini, had a good run all over the world. It was listed in the
Top 10 movies of UK during June-July 2007. It had a decent run in the north
India as well.

Shankar is one of the most successful directors of south India. Almost all
of his films have become hit movies in Tamil and Telugu. His films carry a
distinctive mark in terms of racy script, sleek presentation, fabulous
music, grandeur, amazing technical values, and a strong message. He has made
some of his films in Hindi too. Hindustani, Jeans, and Nayak were received
well by the Hindi audience. His dubbed film Aparchit, starring Vikram, was
appreciated by Hindi audiences and critics. He is one of the directors who
dare to venture into big budget films and make them success.

Interestingly, Robot has been in the news for nearly ten years. Director
Shankar has been contemplating with many names for his dream project. First
it was said that Kamal Haasan would act in it. Then Vikram's name surfaced.
Post 'Sivaji', we heard that Hrithik Roshan would be the dream hero. Then
came the name of Aamir Khan. Finally Shankar made an official announcement
that it would be Shah Rukh Khan, who would don the role in his most intimate
project.

However, it came as a setback to the director when Bollywood superstar SRK
had pulled out from the project. Some leading Tamil magazines speculated
that Ajith, who acted in Ashoka with SRK, would be roped in. but finally
superstar has agreed to act in the movie and that puts an end to all
speculations about the project.

Since the project would cost hundred crore rupees, it goes without saying
that it needs a star like Rajini, who has incredible market value, to redeem
the money and ensure profit for the investors. It is also said that Amithab
Bachchan would don an important role in the film.

Keep watching this space for more updates on Robot.

 A R Rahman

It's only natural for the most sought after music director in the
country to work on his birthday. A R Rahman, who turned 42 on January
6, however, didn't hit the studios to compose music. Instead he opened
the doors of his Apple authorised music conservatory at his home city,
Chennai. The reclusive music maestro has been closely working on his
training centre, KM Music Conservatory, which offers training
programmes in music and music technology.

 "I
have finally, opened my music conservatory. In the coming months we
will have students and singers training in performances and
 production," says Rahman.

 The schoolhouse will audition budding
musicians and students who can play various instruments including
flute, French horn, trumpet, violin and percussion. The handpicked
candidates will then enrol for the course that promises to cover
Western vocal and instrumental performance, Indian Classical vocal,
Western and Indian music theory, music appreciation and ear training.
As far as music technology goes, Rahman intends to train his students
in audio engineering. Apple certified course in Logic Pro and
Digidesign certificate course in Pro Tools will also be a part of the
 module, says the music director.

 So, what prompted Rahman to
establish a music training school? "Having the knowledge of both music
performances and music technology is invaluable. The skill to perform
an instrument combined with production capabilities will ensure many
 more career opportunities," he says.

 Amidst his work for the
conservatory, he was busy meeting friends who had turned up to wish the
reclusive music director, and of course, answering phone calls from the
industrywallahs. He says, "Ashutosh Gowarikar and Shankar had called to
