[arr] (Semi ARR) > I owe what I am to ARR - Anmol Bhave ( Organiser of Rahmania - TOI - 08 June)

2008-06-07 Thread Dinesh Vaidya

Small Talk
with- Rahmania

(A group of
youngsters have been paying tribute to the musical genius in their own way…. by
performing his songs !

Pune Mirror (
Times of India)
Sunday June 08, 2008

by Veda Aggarwal

It was raining
outside. I was on my way to swargate, to a room on the ground floor of Nehru
Stadium to be precise. It was an interview I was after. A group that performed
only works by AR Rahman, the only group of its kind in the country ( other than
the one that backs up the man himself ).

It was late,
almost 10 at night. But I was up and so were they. They were practicing for
their next show. The room was small, but large enough to fit all of the group
(22 of them ) and their instruments. They have keyboardist, a bass guitarist,
percussionists and even a Shehnai player.

The concert is
called RAHMANIA, another tribute to the musical genius, and the band calls
themselves “The Wandering Souls”.

Anmol Bhave is the
man behind the band. “I fell in love with ARR after I heard the music he made
for
Roja. That was back in ’93. When I was in college, I used to participate in the
college fests. You know the ones like VERVE. After a while I began to recognize
the faces of the participants. And as it often happens, that there’ll be one
sing that’s picked up by a number of colleges. I noticed that no one chose
songs by AR Rahman/ I got in touch with what I thought was the best of the
talent and together we put up a performance at the Tilak Smarak Mandir with
only music by AR Rahman. That was the beginning of Rahmania.”

“Since then I’ve
listened to almost everything that he has ever composed,” continues Bhave. “My
favorite is from the soundtrack of Kannathil Mudhalmittal – that’s a Tamil
movie directed by Mani Ratnam.”

“No,” he said,
when I asked him if he listens to anything else. “The way ARR composes, I don’t
need to. There’s the song from the movie Taal,
Kanin Aa Lage, that has been inspired from Russian folk music. He’s used an
acpella technique for the song “please sir’ from the movie BOYS. That’s only
with voices, no instruments backing them up. I admire the number of layers of
tones there are in a single song of his. And the way he uses voices, that’s the
reason we have so many singers (there are 7 in our band), he does the same.”

“I owe what I am
to ARR.” says Bhave. “I am a sound recording engineer. I wouldn’t have gotten
into that field at all if it wasn’t for his music.”

When Rahmania
started, it was a very small baby,” says Sagar Chordia, “But now I’m determined
to make this show successful. We want to have a performance at least once every
month. The repertoire won’t change. It will be something that people can relate
to.”

Chordia is an
investment and finance consultant. Anmol and he are friends ever since they
went to school together. He told me about a show they had in 2005. “It was July
and the performance was scheduled at Yashwantrao Chavan Auditorium,” he
narrated, “ It was raining heavily. It then started to pour and we were sure
that people wouldn’t bother to venture out. But they did come, bought tickets
and the show was successful.”

'Ragasiyam' song is not actually from 'Varanam Ayiram' as reported by
a few online media sites.

It's composed by TGM studios, If I remember correctly but it's a
beautiful song..

BTW, the only leaked song of Varanam Ayiram (Other 2, which includes
Ragasiyam, are not from that movie) - 'Adiye Kolluthe' starting sounds
very similar to 'Endrendum Punnagai' ('Alai Payuthe') song.

Re: [arr] Jakkubai Music

2008-06-07 Thread Ashwin Saravana Kumaar
All know that Rajini launched the movie JAGGUBHAI in 2004 with KSR as
director and ARR as MD. Infact ARR himself comfirmed that he composed
a song for that movie. But since the movie was shelved, ARR used the
song in AH AAH - ANBE AARUYIRE.

ARR compensated KSR for this shelved project by working in GODFATHER.
The movie took ages to see lights and ultimately the qaulity music
for that movie went unnoticed.

Anyway, with regards to the current version of JAGGUBHAI with Sarath,
I think its not worth doing a movie that gonna be a political
propaganda (whatso ever be the original storyline).

Hi group,

Dont know if its news...
Caught a prog midway called 'B4U special' won B4U Music where Kushboo
was interviewing A.R.Rahman where he mentioned that only 5 out of 7
songs will be in the film. Hope to see all on DVD. I could see a
rahman who did not want to disclose much on the project and his
answers were opened. Whereas he talked about some personal album he
has in stores for us. WOW another masterpiece as "Vande Mataram".
Waiting impatiently...

Kamal Hassan finally signs music maestro AR Rahman for his home production,

Kamal himself will co-produce, direct and act in this film.

Rahman was in Mumbai for a short visit, when he revealed his next venture. A

never worked together. We stay in the same city, work in the same industry, but
we have never got an opportunity to work together. But this is an interesting
project and I will be working on the tracks as soon as I reach Chennai."

However there were several rumours doing the rounds about Rahman turning into a
film producer. This question actually got the composer to burst out laughing.
He retorts, "Me and produce films? When will I compose music if I am dealing
with production hassles? Even I have heard that I have approached Aamir Khan
and Kamal Hassan to direct a film for me. Well, it is utter rubbish. I am not
trying my hands at screenplay either. I will leave that to the experts."

It can be recalled that before this, Kamal Hassan's film was backed by Bharat
Bala Production along with Adlabs. Though Marmayogi will be made in Hindi it
will be dubbed in Tamil and Telugu.

Extreme graphics in 'Sakkarakatti'

IndiaGlitz [Saturday, June 07, 2008]

Santhanu, the son of master screenwriter and director K.
Bhagyaraj is starring in a film titled ‘Sakkarakatti’. Another famous son
Prabhu
(son of producer Kalaipuli Dhanu) debuts as director with this film.
The movie has extensive Computer Generated Imagery for the song
sequences. A. R. Rahman has composed the songs. A song titled Chinnamma has
been
with graphic designers and animators for the past 13 months. Such is the
magnitude of the CGI part of the song that is being planned with detailed
storyboarding and precision.
Another song titled 'I miss you da….' also has tremendous
graphics portions and graphic designers are working on it for 7 months and are
still at it.
This kind of planning and execution is creating a lot of
expectations for the film.
Certain illegal music portals have been carrying a song called
'Good Morning Tamilnadu' and claim it is from the movie ‘Sakkaraikatti’.
However, the filmmakers have told Indiaglitz exclusively that this is not true
and are denying it vehemently.

Kamal Hassan woos A R Rahman
Hi Friends ... Check this... :-)

Kamal Hassan finally signs music maestro AR Rahman for his home production,
Marmayogi . It is going to be Kamal Hassan's next venture after Dashavtaram .
Kamal himself will co-produce, direct and act in this film.

Rahman was in Mumbai for a short visit, when he revealed his next venture. A
smiling Rahman in a black suit discloses, "It's strange, but Kamal and I have
never worked together. We stay in the same city, work in the same industry, but
we have never got an opportunity to work together.. But this is an interesting

[arr] AR Rahman: The Rolling Stone Interview

2008-06-07 Thread vinod rajaram
A collectible item for sure :)

http://www.desipundit.com/baradwajrangan/2008/06/07/ar-rahman-
the-rolling-stone-interview/

Baradwaj's comment:

I met ARR last August, when Rolling Stone India approached me
for the story, for their inaugural issue. But apparently, the bosses
at New York said the first few covers *had* to be of international
rockers, and this story kept getting pushed back and got really old.
So another writer met ARR recently and added some updated information,
and our combined effort was formatted into a Q&A and published in the
current issue of Rolling Stone magazine.

The reason for this explanation is that this is the story that
*I* wrote, last August, and not the one that appears in the magazine.
Hence the reference to Om Shanti Om in the future, etc.

Cheers,
Vinod Rajaram

Actually it is not just Rashid Ali singing in Nadhir Dhinna.. come to think
of it, ARR had made the song very much based on guitar play also.. with also
some western, south european sounding guitar melodies .. just like Ishq
Ada..

Hope ARR tries out more Mediterraneans sounds; be it southern europe or
northern africa !

[arr] Re: Rahaman defined music and instrumentation afresh

2008-06-07 Thread nivensamy
Dear Mr. Rao,

Thanks a lot for your wonderful words. In a few lines you have
described what a true ARR fan has in his heart...and I wish to hear
more from other members of this group instead of hearing X,Y n Z
trying to justify himself thinking he knows everything, trying to
prove his knowledge and being arrogant with personal conflicts towards
other members who dont share his views. This group should be reserved
and privileged for messages with scoops about rahman's projects and
glorify his works. I wish to hear more of messages describing the
uniqueness of rahman's genuosity in using a common instrument for
other MDs and how he uses it differently in his songs to his own style...

I urge Gopal and other moderators to be more vigilant on messages from
members who deviates from the main purpose of this group. Maybe
should we have policies for posting. I dont want to see anymore mails
about language issues or hindi/tamil stuff. Rahman's religion and
language is music and music ONLY. I dont understand neither hindi nor
tamil, still I understand the feelings in his music and I dont ask for
translation cause i prefer it like that. Rarely will I pay attention
to lyrics unless I watch dvd.

I wonder why we dont hear from Ranojoy, Krish ashwin, Thevaker, Satish
etc... who was members since 1999. Gopal do we have statistics about
the group?

Cheers,
NIVEN (I think im only rahman fan from MAURITIUS :-(

on, this is my first posting. My favorites are almost all the songs of
ARR. As a matter of fact I am, eminently placed to get disqualified
from belonging to this Group. I do not know Hindi. I do not Know
Tamil. I do not have any knowledge of Music. Above all this, I am aged
all of 72 years. But I have a gut feeling about and instant reaction
to good tunes, good instrumentation and calm, soothing and vibrant
music.

> I have a good collection of his Tamil songs which I love many, I
like all. Daily, I listen to these songs for 2 to 4 hours. They
refresh me, keep me fit and energetic. Arr's uniquness, according to
me, I repeat, according to me,, lies in:
> 1. Treating voice [male or female] as yet another instrument, to be
played upon.
> 2. Each of his song is a symphony. To reach those heights and lows
in 3/4 minutes is possible only to him.
> 3. He is a master at creating heavenly interludes which are more
often than not are the highlights of many songs.
> 4. I had never heard any one using drums [or allied instruments],
shehnai, [I am not worried about exact names, as long as I enjoy
them], flute to this advantage. How he introduces weaving them in to
the voice, takes them, leaving the voice behind, to a solo crescendo
and taper off, very effectively, yet all in a fraction of a minute,
which is humanly impossible. He is Blessed, if not he himself is Divine.
> 5. I divide the Indian cine music era in to two segments. PreARR
and PostARR eras. In the PreARR era we used to ask who sang that song?
Rafi or Kishore. Now we ask who composed it? That is the power duly
acquired and got by our honored ARR.
> I have my own two Play-lists of ARR's Tamil songs. One I play in
whichever mood I am in. These songs are level-all gems. The second
list I play when I feel I am in good and high spirit!
> In other words, what I am saying is that I adore those, around 70,
Tamil songs tuned by ARR, even though I do not know the language.
Proving, if proof is needed, music has no language. Rather It is ARR
who proved it through millions like me. Let us not enter in to
Lilliputian arguments over that GIANT Musician whose presence amongst
us we are fortunate to have.
