[arr] "He's a bit of a genius," - Boyle on Rahman

2008-10-31 Thread $ Pavan Kumar $
Also adding to the film's texture was a hybrid Western-Bollywood score by
composer A.R. Rahman.

"He's a bit of a genius," says Boyle, who tagged the film with a boisterous
Bollywood dance number. "He responds to something emotionally, not just the
frames where the cut is.

Amazon's Kindle gets fired upBig-budget studio pics are great ... for other
filmmakers. Danny Boyle thrives when things are lean and focused.
His latest film, "Slumdog Millionaire," is a darling of the fall fest circuit,
an English-Hindi hybrid shot mostly with handheld digital cameras on location
in Mumbai for $15 million.
But Boyle's epiphany -- and a lesson Hollywood could take to heart -- was "The
Beach," the 2000 Fox drama shot as Leonardo DiCaprio's first film after
"Titanic."
"When I got 'The Beach,' Boyle recalls, "I was paralyzed. You could take that
money and buy a town where I come from" (Manchester, England).
Fox imposed few restrictions on the filmmaker's vision and gave Boyle his
biggest budget ever after he broke out of Brit theater and television in the
'90s with three energetic Ewan McGregor pics, "Shallow Grave," "Trainspotting"
and "A Life Less Ordinary." But the helmer wasn't able to revel in the
largesse.
"The more money I take that is not restricted, which technically gives you
freedom, equipment and more days, the more the spirit of the film dies, falls
flat," he says.
After "The Beach," Boyle says he decided "not to do huge-budget films anymore."
He returned to making tiny British TV movies and felt the excitement again:
"This is what I should do."
It's not that the Brit helmer hates Hollywood studios. They've been very good
to him, he says, especially 20th Century Fox and its specialty division
Searchlight, which backed the low-budget pics "Sunshine," "Millions" and "28
Days Later," and is releasing "Slumdog" in partnership with Warner Bros.
And Boyle wishes he could make films like "The Dark Knight," he says, "but I
realize I am not very good at it."
Boyle was tempted by, but turned down, an f/x-crammed David Benioff script.
"James Cameron, David Fincher and Ridley Scott do battles with the studios,"
Boyle says. "You have to be difficult to do that. On those huge movies it's
like Aztec sacrifices, where the cameraman gets sacked by the third leading
actor."
But restrict and limit Boyle's options, and his spirit flies.
"That's where I come from," he says. "Where you make the best with what you've
got. That's what I am. I've never done commercials or big videos where they
throw money at you. I am a bit difficult, but I like harmony. I like a smaller
group of people all pulling in the same direction toward the same thing. I get
rid of them if they're not."
Shooting "Slumdog," which was financed by the now-defunct Warner Independent
Pictures, was liberating. Scribe Simon Beaufoy ("The Full Monty") took
considerable liberties with the original novel, which is based on an apocryphal
story about a teen from the slums of Mumbai (played by Dev Patel) who wins 20
million rupees (roughly $400,000) on "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire."
Trying to find out the truth of the tale in India was near impossible, Boyle
found. "There's a billion people racing ahead in a 10% growth economy," he
says, "enough to start up a decent-size planet from scratch. Did a slum kid go
on the show? There are lots of stories. Educated people went on pretending to
be rickshaw drivers. If the story isn't true, it should be."
Boyle used Suketo Mehta's "Maximum City: Bombay Lost and Found" as his Mumbai
guide, and Beaufoy's rags-to-riches mystery-romance invented a structure that
allowed Boyle to fluidly float back in time without resorting to flashback
motifs, cutting back to the past "literally in a blink," he says, to reveal
just how the kid knew the answer to each question. "It doesn't feel predictable
like flashback movies."
Boyle's challenge -- one happily embraced -- was to make $15 million look like
a whole lot more.
"I like that tension," he says. "I don't want to make a dirty indie film
struggling with paltry resources. I want to make a film that looks like it cost
$50 million or $60 million."
To do that, Boyle jumped into a 12-week shoot on crazy Mumbai locations that
changed overnight, deploying a nimble cameraman with a hard drive in a backpack
and a gyro with an attached camera lens in his hand.
"It's a different way of grabbing reality and it has an intensity to it," he
says. "It lets the mind float off places."

outhouse in Mumbai

I am often stuck in a position of deciding on whether how much advanced
news I want to bring to my readers and how much mystery I want to maintain
for a film not only for myself, but for them as well.

I saw Danny Boyle's *Slumdog
Millionaire*yesterday
and it is a very good film, but for the most part thanks to its
fantastic ending. That does not forgive the fact that it is not a film that
necessarily reinvents the wheel in as much as it taps into natural human
emotions and succeeds very well at doing so. However, I don't think it is
out of bounds to say Overture's *The
Visitor*does something
very similar, also with a story that you've been told before,
but never quite like this.

That said, the new trailer featured below will do nothing for you other than
give you more story than you want or need. On top of that, all the raving
everyone is doing about the film is also going to hurt any one that goes in
looking for a film wrapped in gold, because while *Slumdog Millionaire* is a
good film it isn't the end-all-be-all of films in 2008.

I do think Dev Patel stands a very good chance at earning a supporting actor
nomination for his role as tells the story of Jamal Malik, an 18 year-old
orphan from the slums of Mumbai, who is just one question away from winning
a staggering 20 million rupees on India's "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?" I
also thought Ayush Mahesh Khedekar, the young actor you plays Jamal in
flashbacks, was fantastic. *The other great thing the film has going for it
is its pulsing soundtrack, a surprising mix of music that really captures
the essence of each scene. Whoever chose all the songs really knew what they
were doing.*

I will go more in depth in an actual review, but as far as what you need to
know in order to enjoy this film, you don't need the trailer below, all you
need is the paragraph above and hopefully in limiting yourself the film will
be just as good for you as it has been for so many people that saw it before
it became the "It" movie of 2008.
Cheers,
Madhavan.R

[arr] A R Rahman and Airtel

2008-10-31 Thread rahmanfever
Airtel : Simply does it

Airtel's brief to ace bollywood music director A.R. Rahman in 2002
was to create a tune that would appeal to not just the viewers, but also
the listeners, of its advertisements. Rahman's signature tune for
Airtel is today the most downloaded piece of phone music on the planet.
This year, Rahman composed afresh for the telecom giant's campaign
for the Delhi Half Marathon scheduled for November. The unambiguous
brief this time was to reach out to children. Cell phone users are
already furiously downloading the new tune.

Airtel's network now covers more than 385,000 of India's 650,000
villages. And the intensifying competition has still not dislodged
Airtel from the top. It added more than 30 million customers over the
last one year alone, and every third mobile user in India is its
customer. Then, the company claims that an even higher proportion of
high-end users are in its fold. Last month, Kohli was pleasantly
surprised to find a van in Chhattisgarh that was backing up using the
2002 Rahman tune for its reverse gear horn. It seems Airtel is now part
of India's psyche.

Cameraman cum Actor Illavarasan in Rahmania

Illavarasan has been the cameraman for the film Anthi Mantharai. He has also
acted in a lot of films, and has been the cameraman for a lot of Rahman's
films.

I have worked for Kizhakku Cheemayile and Karuthamma as an assistant to
Bharathiraaja Sir.

I knew that a small boy by name Dileep had composed music for Roja,
Gentleman, and that Bharathiraaja has roped the boy for his films also. I
haven't seen Rahman in person, and I was assuming that the boy would be
looking like Suresh Menon ( Director – Pudiya Mugam ) , but when I saw
Rahman, I was totally surprised. He was so small, and tiny just like a half
ticket passenger in buses.

When I met him first, I saw his mother calling Rahman saying, " Rahman vaa
paa. Biryani aaridum paaa… ( Biryani is losing heat. Pls come soon)" and
Rahman used to answer saying " Amma. Varen Maa. Iru maaa ( Wait Mother… I
shall come )". This has been the famous dialogue of his mother till date,
and Rahman now also replies in the same fashion.

(Raihanna adds that she would have heard this dialogues a lac times, and its
going on in

the same manner now too )

He used to talk Madras Tamil a lot during those days.

( Raihanna adds saying that he knows all forms of Tamil, and if he wants to
cut jokes, he would use the appropriate Tamil needed. He talks in telugu ,
Malayalam very fluently.)

When he speaks with Vairamuthu, he would talk in a very scholarly fashion.

I first listened to the song " Then Kizhakku Cheemayile" . That was the
first song that Rahman composed for a village situation. That song brings
about a feeling, which cannot be explained. Its like a feeling , which comes
out from the depth of the stomach.

Once he said that the product that we creates must influence us first, so
that it can impress the others.

Madras Sound studios. Dileep used to come there for doing Jingles. It's a
great challenge for Music Directors to compose music for advertisments.

As far as my knowledge, and information goes, it was Suresh Menon who was
supposed to work with Rahman even before Maniratnam.

Fav Songs of Rahman

I love melody like anything.

Netru Illadha Maatram – is a fabulous

Enna Vilai azhage

Porale Ponnuthayi ( happy ) ….. there is a minutest voice of girls who would
be laughing in the song

Poovukkul ulinthirukkum – Jeans

He has made Tamil music reach abnormal heights.

There are zero songs of Rahman which I would say, I didn't like. Every song
is a great one.

Dance Master Brinda on Rahmania

I am a very shy girl, and learnt classical Dance from a very young age. I
started as an assistant to my sister Kala during Punnagai Mannan days. Raghu
Master is our Guru. The first break came for the song " Azhagiya Laila (
Ullathai alli Thaa")

Duet songs are usually tough to choerograph. Once we get the song, and the
BGMs, we listen to them for more than 10 times, and frame a sequence in our
minds. Some Directors tell the entire sequence, and some just narrate it
just before the song.

Mayya Mayya song from Guru

Mallika is not a great dancer. But I had the confidence that we can maker
her dance. It's a fabulous number ( with 7 or 8 beats ) , and the part " Yeh
Rishta" which comes in the middle had a significant beauty. I showed Mani
Sir a demo of the dance that we had planned, and he was convinced with it.

There are Some heroes, for whom the leg movement is not good, but hand

us, " Maam. I don't know dancing, and you are going to find a tough time
teaching me how to dance".

Editing also makes a song look either beautiful or bad.

Trisha took two days to learn a BGM, when she initially came to Malayasia.
But the same girl is doing a dance bit just like that. She acted with Prabhu
Deva and he brought about the best in her.

In Hindi, I like Saroj Khan. In Tamil, the best is Prabhu Deva.

I am a Great Great Great Fan of Rahman Sir. I listen more of his music, when
compared to other Directors. Its not at all easy for a choreographer to
choreograph the songs of A.R. Rahman. We have to count each and every step,
and take that extra care and attention for his songs. My assistant once
requested Mani Sir saying that she wanted to meet Rahman sir. Mani sir
asked, " Why". She replied, " How is he doing music like this. We are
finding it very tough to choregraph his songs.".

Its highly challenging. The only Music Director who doesn't repeat his own
style of songs is A.R.Rahman. He has abundant love for music.

We want to ask him, as to why he doesn't give normal songs like any others….

Most fav Songs –

   1. Konjum Mainakale – Kandukondein Kandukondein
   2. Kannai Katti Kolladhe
   3. aayirathil oruvan
   4. Mayya Mayya
   5. Ballelaka song from sivaji

Experience working with Shankar

I was supposed to work for Boys, but unfortunately, the dates had some
problem. Sivaji was the first movie that I worked with Shankar Sir. Rahman
Sir doesn't give the music in toto for a song. He gives half, and then the
remaining would come later. When Ballelaka song was given, it was so
energetic. We shot near Panchkana ( Pune ) .

The painting of Rajni Sir on the stomach was not a sticker. The painting
used to finish at 9 AM. Rajni Sir is very fast in working, as also K.V.
Anand.

*There is a Holy song for Sultan the Warrior. It's a very lovely song. It's
a duet song. A very fantabulous one.* He is expert in all style song, and
its only with him, that we find Class and Style mix together.

He is an expert in BGMs.. He would give a variation in the last pallavi.
Just mind blowing.

Uyire – Most fav Song and lots of songs

I did Sillenu oru Kaadhal. Munbe Vaa, New York Nagaram. I used to tell
Jothika, that she should have done Munbe Vaa, with more eye variations, and
it would have come out superbly.

[arr] Pappu can rap Saala - Blazee

2008-10-31 Thread Vithur
*Pappu can rap Saala*
http://www.indianexpress.com/news/Pappu-can-rap-Saala/379833
**
*It's still an insert in the main song, but rap's a sound that's going
mainstream in Bollywood
*Snoop dogg has done Hollywood. But when he lounged alongside Akshay Kumar
in a slim-fitted maroon kurta and a jewel-studded turban in this year's
blockbuster Singh Is Kinng, you could say that rap, like the pizza, had not
only arrived, but got itself a tandoori topping. A.R. Rahman agrees. "Five
years ago, no one would've even thought that rap would ever become
mainstream. But it has certainly been successful in bringing with it the
trend of Hinglish lyrics," says Rahman, who had rapper Blaaze loose with
that tongue-tripper Wenna-may-l-see you-when-you-dance-in-the-hall-and-a
wenna-may-I-see you-when-you-dance … hey! in this year's hit track Pappu
can't dance saala (Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na).

The masses might not always dig the barrage of words, but they are ready to
dance with it. "Rap brings in a certain element of madness to the song and
that's probably why people are enjoying it more than ever," says Shekhar
Ravjiani of the Vishal-Shekhar duo, both of whom rap in several of their
compositions, including the title track of this year's Bachna Ae Haseeno.
Shekhar, who also got Abhishek Bachchan to debut as a rapper in Bluffmaster
three years ago, now has Dad B rapping again in a forthcoming film, Aladin.

There are more interesting acts ahead. Actor Om Puri will be heard letting
it rip in Amol Palekar's next, a musical comedy which has Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy
composing the track. Amitabh Sunil Ishq Bector has recently composed a
"crazy song" for Sagar Ballary's film Kacha Nimbu while the only female
rapper the country's known, Hard Kaur (more about her later), is composing
for a film titled Chai Garam.

As the trend grows, this small group of rappers is making its presence felt.
Like Lakshminarasimha Vijaya Rajagopala Seshadri Sharma Rajesh Raman, who
started as MC Blaze. When asked to put an accent on the "e" and add an "a"
for some numerological magic, he became the rhythmic poet Blaaze—the man who
had Amitabh Bachchan bopping in Bunty Aur Babli. Blaaze has just sung for
Taxi-Taxi, a song by A.R. Rahman from the Tamil movie Sakkarakatti, which
was aired 422 times in 30 hours on radio. He is also singing a full-fledged
Tamil hip-hop song called Hey Salaa, from the movie Aegan. "There is a
difference between a rapper and a playback singer. For a rapper, the...

rightly said.

You have highlighted another crucial aspect of copyright debate.

Everything is copyright of someone.

All the images we are posting here, of people, of functions, of cd
covers, whatever, are copyrighted, so we should not share them.

All the reviews of movies/ music, all the interviews, all the chats that
we are quoting here are copyrighted, so we should not share them.

At most, we can post link of the original pic/ video, content that is
somewhere at web and members can go see/ read/ hear that there.

Then, what do we do here? Just share links from net? Well, that would
also be good, but would that be a life good enough?

Thanks.

Top British filmmaker Danny Boyle's new

Mumbai-based film "Slumdog Millionaire" won rave reviews Friday after

its screening at the close of the London Film Festival. Skip related content

The

movie follows a poor boy's rise to fortune as an unlikely contestant on

an Indian version of the hit television game show "Who Wants to be a

Millionaire, " with the trials and tribulations of life in Mumbai's

slums as a backdrop.

The Independent newspaper hailed the British

filmmaker's collaboration with Bollywood megastar Anil Kapoor, saying

the movie even topped "Trainspotting, " Boyle's 1996 hit which made the

young Briton's name.

"'Slumdog Millionaire' is an exhilarating

ride... with a wild energy that makes even 'Trainspotting' (Boyle's

calling card) look leaden-footed, " the daily said.

The film

"looks a certain hit (and) suggests that collaborations can be of

mutual benefit and it is hard to think of many other recent British

movies that have the energy tapped here," it added.

The Times was

equally impressed, giving it four out of five stars after the screening

closed the London event on Thursday evening. "The fairytale power of

the film is in watching a city evolve through the eyes of a child," it

said.

"There's a comic poetry about it that feels totally in tune

with its Indian setting," its reviewer said, calling the movie a

"festival finale that puts a spring in your step and brings a tear to

the eye."

The movie tells of how slum orphan Jamal -- played by

London-born actor Dev Patel -- is just one question away from winning a

whopping 20 million rupees (400,000 dollars) when he is arrested on

suspicion of cheating.

Bollywood megastar Anil Kapoor, appearing

in his first English-language role, and newcomer Freida Pinto also star

in the film scripted by Simon Beaufoy ("The Full Monty") and inspired

by Vikas Swarup's novel "Q & A."

The Daily Telegraph said the film was "one of a kind liable to send audiences
happily skipping out into the cold London night."

"Slumdog

Millionaire is that rarity, a populist, mainstream entertainment that

finds a way to deliver cheerful uplift to its audience without ever

insulting the intelligence. A terrific festival climax," it said.

[arr] Rave reviews for SdM

2008-10-31 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
Top British filmmaker Danny Boyle's new
Mumbai-based film "Slumdog Millionaire" won rave reviews Friday after
its screening at the close of the London Film Festival. Skip related content

The
movie follows a poor boy's rise to fortune as an unlikely contestant on
an Indian version of the hit television game show "Who Wants to be a
Millionaire," with the trials and tribulations of life in Mumbai's
slums as a backdrop.
The Independent newspaper hailed the British
filmmaker's collaboration with Bollywood megastar Anil Kapoor, saying
the movie even topped "Trainspotting," Boyle's 1996 hit which made the
young Briton's name.
"'Slumdog Millionaire' is an exhilarating
ride... with a wild energy that makes even 'Trainspotting' (Boyle's
calling card) look leaden-footed," the daily said.

[arr] A.R. Rahman and Selvaraghavan together

2008-10-31 Thread Ranjith K
Yuvan Shankar Raja has been so close to Selvaraghavan right from the early
days of his career. But then, as three of these special personalities;
Selvaraghavan, Yuvan and cinematographer Aravind Krishna split up, they had
to give up their joint venture of production as 'White Elephants'.

Finally, Selvaraghavan opted for G.V. Prakash to score music for his
forthcoming flick 'Aayirathil Oruvan' starring Paruthiveeran fame Karthi,
Reema Sen, Andrea and Parthiban in lead roles. Soon after getting completed
with this project, Selvaraghavan will kick-start his next project featuring
new faces in the lead role and A.R. Rahman has signed to score music for the
film…

and about how he got inspired into movies etc )

http://www.mediafire.com/?mmvokzmyygn

Geetha introduced me to K. Balachander, and that's how Duet happened. And
then came in Mani sir's Aasai and iruvar.

Experience working in Duet

The one thing that is common with this man Balachander is the way he
instills confidence in you, and take the things that he wants from you. He
would give you a stage for expressing your skills and talents. He would
always say, that we grow in acting, because of the innate talents present in
each one of us. Only experience and exposure makes you perfect and make you
grow. He will instill that Self Confidence.

It's a great learning experience for me, not as a actor but as a human
being.

Acting is Common sense.

If you have to become beautiful, you have to unlearn a lot.

I see Balachander as a novel, See maniratnam as a novel.

" I am responsible for my bad roles, and equally responsible for my good
roles".

Experience in Iruvar

Mind Blowing one. It's a film, which had a lot of talents and lot of famous
people. I had fear about how people would be accepting my role in it. I
should say that lot of gentlemen worked in that film. Maniratnam, Mohanlal
are all good gentlemen. I could find a lot of growth within myself doing
that movie. It was a very great experience doing that movie.

Q :- Have you ever met Rahman ?

Praj :- I have met him very few times. He is a very beautiful human being.
Once suddenly, he told me " Prakash. I watched your Nagamandala Kannada
movie" I asked him, " Kannada movie. Where did you see it ?". He said, " I
was doing music, and it came in TV , and I saw it . Good film and Good
music". He speaks very less, and speaks very beautiful.

He has been my Music Director ever since my first movie. When Roja got
released, I was in Bangalore. At that time itself, it was something new, and
something special. It was very very fresh to see to that man. When I was in
my youth and I was in love, those times, were associated with Rahman.

I love the way he opens up. " Thirakka Kaatukkule ( En Swasa kaatre)". The
sound itself is a silent scream. The BGMs that he had brought in is so
beautiful. It was so simple and hummable. He has brought in lot of voices.
When you see Rahman, its not the music alone, but the voices that he has
brought in. He has brought in a lot of Sufi Music into being. He always gets
away surprisingly.

The Sax which he used in Duet is MIND BLOWING. Its like a bird which is
singing at its peak. It makes anyone cry. The music filled me all through
the movie. It was very exciting and suprising to me to know what music he
would do, on my entry, and on my walk. He would have seen my expression, and
did some music to it….All this added to my excitement.

Perhaps, this is the first time, I am talking about Rahman in a media.

Rahman also makes music to the scripts. The picturisation and the BGMs blend
to the movie.
