[arr] Aakash Gandhi reviews SDM - 9.5/10

2008-12-04 Thread Chord
"A.R. Rahman has just ended a year for the ages. It is safe to say
that this score will go down as one of his greatest works ever, and by
far his most satisfying international project. If you ask me, Rahman
is leaps and bounds ahead of his competition for Oscar honors. Some
call him God. Others call him a Musical Prophet. Regardless of what
you believe, this masterpiece proves that Rahman is an international
phenomenon producing music at a level higher than anybody else right
now. Listen to him…"

SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE
Music Review

Source: avstv.com
By Aakash Gandhi
Reviewer's Rating: 9.5/10

Mumbai, India 11/26/2008 – The bustling city of twenty million was
brutally shattered by an unprecedented string of highly-sophisticated
and coordinated attacks never witnessed before. The horror continues
fifty-five hours later, as I painstakingly write these very words.

During these moments of such deep sorrow and tragedy, writing on a
film may seem rather frivolous…even insensitive. However, God works in
mysterious and miraculous ways my friends.

Rarely, if ever, does the Western world catch a glimpse into the
beauty and majesty of such a dynamic city as Mumbai. Yet, today, her
innocence has been ravaged and raped, left to bleed in front of the
entire world. A hostage within her own land, her booming image will
vanish within the minds of many internationals worldwide.

However, like a godsend in the nick of time, Danny Boyle brings the
Western world a cinematic marvel that places Mumbai right back in the
centre of attention…but for all the right reasons this time. Simon
Beautoy's script, based on Vikas Swarup's novel, "Q&A," touches on the
life of Jamal Malik (Dev Patel), an impoverished orphan raised in the
slums of Mumbai, who unexpectedly reaches the Rs. 20 Million question
on India's version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. Accused of
cheating, he defends himself against the authorities by narrating his
life on the streets - a sequence of mesmerizing tales which hold the
key to all his right answers.

Through Anthony Dod Mantel's exquisite cinematography, Beaufoy's
beautifully orchestrated script, and Boyle's breath-taking execution,
SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE pays homage to Mumbai – The resilient city of
unwavering spirit and unbridled passion. She is the city of dreams…

Many of the few who have been fortunate enough to view this film will
tell you that in addition to the cinematic landscapes, the film's
background score and OST are equally important in the its attempt to
open your eyes and ears to a whole new world. The living masterpiece
behind the music is the legendary A.R. Rahman, India's most treasured
and prized composer.

The gentleman is having himself a year that even the greatest
musicians could only dream of. After taking India's domestic market by
storm with five critically acclaimed soundtracks, he pours the icing
on the cake with an International project set to light the global
stage on fire (many are already handing the Oscar over to the team of
Slumdog Millionaire). All hype aside, the soundtrack is an absolute
explosion of genres, cultures, and sounds. Rahman's sound, coupled
with Boyle's vision, sculpts a gorgeous three-dimensional statue of
one of the most underrated cities in the world…and one kid's struggle
to survive it…

We'll first have a listen to the four original songs, followed by
analysis of the six thematic/instrumental pieces.

Rahman lifts off with O…Saya, a song that is, much like the rest of
the soundtrack, an electrifying detonation of sound and style. Filled
with some riveting electronic tones, Rahman ups the tempo with a
breath-taking drumming performance that features throughout the
backdrops of this flashy and rhythmic track. Perhaps the most
attractive aspect of this number is the international collaboration
between A.R. Rahman and M.I.A., both of whom are featured vocalists.
Lyrically, the song doesn't hold much scope. Verdict: It is the
composition's raw attitude and thumping grooves that will absolutely
light your body on fire!

Ah…as if out of nowhere, Rahman throws in a little cultural flavor
into this otherwise progressive soundtrack with some traditional
Indian film sounds in Ringa Ringa. Bringing a slight touch of
familiarity to his Indian listeners, the track bears resemblance to
the early 90s cult-classic "Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai." Despite the
nostalgia of many of the styles and sounds of the 90s, Rahman infuses
the number with a sultry blend of old and new elements, couples it
with an alluring melody, and ultimately creates a unique sound that is
both traditional and progressive simultaneously. Alka Yagnik, one of
India's most prolific and seasoned playback vocalists, does complete
justice to her role as one of Rahman's favorites. Raqib Alam's lyrics
culminate the musical trinity of Ringa Ringa with class. Verdict: This
song is sure to add a splash of color to Boyle's ambitious portrait.

"You are my waking dream. You're all that's real to me. You are the
magic

Re: [arr] Spirits give SDM the snub

2008-12-04 Thread Anil Nair
Nope. There are the Independent Film maker awards and they are staged a day
before the Oscar night typically. Though they have no bearing on the Oscar
nominations or the Golden Globes, in recent years these awards have gained a
lot of importance and recognition for small budget (normally translates to
Independent) movie makers.

This one is somewhat which I can relate to so much ...

"You love and respect Rahman, the human being and not just
Rahman, the composer "

I like Rahman not only becoz he is an internationally acclaimed Music
director
I liked the way he carries his success .. the emotions that he has for other
people .. and the seeing the
practicality of religion "Sufism" rather than the blind belief one has
I love him as a human being ... if anyone asks me who my role model is
my immediate reply wud only be Rahman

IG Exclusive! Ajith's next 'Asal' with Saran IndiaGlitz
[Thursday, December 04, 2008]
Yup! It's been a perplexed scenario for Sivaji Productions on fixing
director for Ajith Kumar's 49th film. It all started a year back as
Sivaji Productions signed Ajith and Gowtham Menon for a project. Later,
calls on air were either Dharani or Vishnuvardhan who would be replacing
Gowtham. Finally, sources have revealed that it's Saran who will be
wielding megaphone for Ajith's 49th film 'ASAL' produced by Sivaji
Productions.

Well, it's noteworthy that duo combo Ajith-Saran had spelled hat-trick
with Kadhal Mannan, Amarkalam and Attagasam. Earlier Sivaji Productions
had signed agreement with Sameera Reddy as Gowtham had suggested and now
she is being sustained for female lead.

Producers, Ajith and Saran on the verge of finalizing technicians within
short period and buzzes are that it would be either A.R. Rahman or
Harris Jayaraj scoring music.

Do you mean the Computerised Theme Music ???. Was it done by ARR ?. I think
he did the programming alone, and the tune is IRs.

[arr] Slumdog Music review - this masterpiece proves that Rahman is an international phenomenon

2008-12-04 Thread $ Pavan Kumar $
Mumbai, India 11/26/2008 - The bustling city of twenty million was brutally
shattered by an unprecedented string of highly-sophisticated and coordinated
attacks never witnessed before. The horror continues fifty-five hours later, as
I painstakingly write these very words.

During these moments of such deep sorrow and tragedy, writing on a film may
seem rather frivolous...even insensitive. However, God works in mysterious and
miraculous ways my friends.

Rarely, if ever, does the Western world catch a glimpse into the beauty and
majesty of such a dynamic city as Mumbai. Yet, today, her innocence has been
ravaged and raped, left to bleed in front of the entire world. A hostage within
her own land, her booming image will vanish within the minds of many
internationals worldwide.

However, like a godsend in the nick of time, Danny Boyle brings the Western
world a cinematic marvel that places Mumbai right back in the centre of
attention...but for all the right reasons this time. Simon Beautoy's script,
based on Vikas Swarup's novel, "Q&A," touches on the life of Jamal Malik (Dev
Patel), an impoverished orphan raised in the slums of Mumbai, who unexpectedly
reaches the Rs. 20 Million question on India's version of Who Wants To Be A
Millionaire. Accused of cheating, he defends himself against the authorities by
narrating his life on the streets - a sequence of mesmerizing tales which hold
the key to all his right answers.

Through Anthony Dod Mantel's exquisite cinematography, Beaufoy's beautifully
orchestrated script, and Boyle's breath-taking execution, SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE
pays homage to Mumbai - The resilient city of unwavering spirit and unbridled
passion. She is the city of dreams...

Many of the few who have been fortunate enough to view this film will tell you
that in addition to the cinematic landscapes, the film's background score and
OST are equally important in the its attempt to open your eyes and ears to a
whole new world. The living masterpiece behind the music is the legendary A.R.
Rahman, India's most treasured and prized composer.

The gentleman is having himself a year that even the greatest musicians could
only dream of. After taking India's domestic market by storm with five
critically acclaimed soundtracks, he pours the icing on the cake with an
International project set to light the global stage on fire (many are already
handing the Oscar over to the team of Slumdog Millionaire). All hype aside, the
soundtrack is an absolute explosion of genres, cultures, and sounds. Rahman's
sound, coupled with Boyle's vision, sculpts a gorgeous three-dimensional statue
of one of the most underrated cities in the world...and one kid's struggle to
survive it...

We'll first have a listen to the four original songs, followed by analysis of
the six thematic/instrumental pieces.

Rahman lifts off with O...Saya, a song that is, much like the rest of the
soundtrack, an electrifying detonation of sound and style. Filled with some
riveting electronic tones, Rahman ups the tempo with a breath-taking drumming
performance that features throughout the backdrops of this flashy and rhythmic
track. Perhaps the most attractive aspect of this number is the international
collaboration between A.R. Rahman and M.I.A., both of whom are featured
vocalists. Lyrically, the song doesn't hold much scope. Verdict: It is the
composition's raw attitude and thumping grooves that will absolutely light your
body on fire!

Ah...as if out of nowhere, Rahman throws in a little cultural flavor into this
otherwise progressive soundtrack with some traditional Indian film sounds in
Ringa Ringa. Bringing a slight touch of familiarity to his Indian listeners,
the track bears resemblance to the early 90s cult-classic "Choli Ke Peeche Kya
Hai." Despite the nostalgia of many of the styles and sounds of the 90s, Rahman
infuses the number with a sultry blend of old and new elements, couples it with
an alluring melody, and ultimately creates a unique sound that is both
traditional and progressive simultaneously. Alka Yagnik, one of India's most
prolific and seasoned playback vocalists, does complete justice to her role as
one of Rahman's favorites. Raqib Alam's lyrics culminate the musical trinity of
Ringa Ringa with class. Verdict: This song is sure to add a splash of color to
Boyle's ambitious portrait.

"You are my waking dream. You're all that's real to me. You are the magic in
the world I see. You are my prayer I sing. You brought me to my knees. You are
the faith that made me believe. Dreams on fire...higher and higher. Passions
burning...right on the pyre..." - Blaaze and Wendy Parr

Rahman begins to show us his sensitively beautiful side in the absolutely
gorgeous Dreams On Fire. Rendered with exquisite passion by Suzanne D'Mello,
your heart skips a beat as your soul is captivated by the inspiring melody
amidst the softly lit acoustic ambiance. The vocal layering is another exam

[arr] Re: Distraught Rahman off

2008-12-04 Thread Chord
Poor ARR. I really feel for him. H Shridhar was a close friend and
brother, not just a colleague. Like losing someone close in your
family. Being in shock is only natural. I think it will be
therapeutic for ARR to give some space to his grieving and spending
time elsewhere. It's just not fair what happened, but when is life
ever fair? Sudden loss is just a horrible experience and I hope and
pray that ARR's emotional wounds heal in time, although the loss he
feels will always be with him.

May God protect and help heal our ARR.

Shocked at the untimely death of his friend H Sridhar, the music maestro
packs off for a break in the US.
AR
Rahman has been so shaken up by his friend H Sridhar’s death that he
has packed his bag and headed off to New York to spend some time away
from Chennai. A friend close to the composer says that neither can
Rahman enter his recording studio where he has composed several songs
in Sridhar’s company nor can he concentrate on any other thing after
the sudden demise of the four-time national-award winning 48-year-old
sound engineer.
“Rahman has been shattered. Sridhar was
absolutely fine, working with Rahman till the last day on the music of
Ghajini. Nobody expected him to pass away at such a young age,” said
the friend.
He adds: “He can’t enter the recording studio in
which they were working. For three days, Rahman hasn’t spoken much. He
is completely in a state of shock. They have been dear friends for more
than a decade. Rahman has packed his bags and is off to New York. He,
it seems, wants to stay away from the place where he has spent so much
time with his friend. It is good for him as it will keep him a
distracted.”
Rahman and Sridhar have worked in films like Rangeela, Dil Se, Lagaan, Guru,
Mangal Pandey, Roja and Bombay.

[ARR] First song composed by ARR

2008-12-04 Thread Mohamed Hashir
I dont know wheather it was shared here before..

read on..

Its not from Roja or Yodha .

the song "Vellithen kinnam pol" from "Penpada" directed by Crossbelt Mani

Story behind the song :

*On April 2006, on a music program in "Amrutha TV", Baranikkavu Shivakumar
was the guest. He is the one who written the songs for the film
"Penpada"(1975). He started to sing "vellithen kinnam pol" and declared its
ARR's tune.**

When he was working for that film, the music director was R.K.Shekhar(ARR's
father). Totally 4 song to compose. He composed 3 song and take a break.
That time six year old ARR came and play some music bits in Harmonium. All
are surprised and ask him to do the full song. Everyone like it and decided
to use it as the movie's soundtrack. Its titled "Vellithen Kinnam Pol" and
sung by Jayachandran. Whole orchestra is done by his father RK Shekar but
the basic tune is Rahman's.

When ARR came to **trivandrum** (Kerala) for Kairali-Swaralaya award,
KJ.Yesudas confirmed this story and sang this song on stage*

[arr] Re: ARRahman is self taught Composer

2008-12-04 Thread rayrai2k
I cant agree more with this. He had formal training in music and his
dad being an arranger and his working with other music directors had
made him a composer. And that is how every music director or composer
has come been formed. He is extraordinary than his predecessor is
agreeable. Unlike AR Yanni cannot read or write notes.
Being a composer is a very creative form in art just like a painter
and a story writer.
IR had been a good composer and an arranger as well just like our AR.
IR too learnt from GK Venkatesh and many others.

[arr] ARRahman is self taught Composer

2008-12-04 Thread jibandevta
I would like to say this happily and proudly that our boss is
'self taught music composer'..[like 'Yanni' in West]
He has received tit bits of music from IR and Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan
but you can't call them his 'guru's..
His inclination towards spirituality, his clean persona and
love/devotion for music has made him whatever he is today.
Whatever he has achieved belongs to 'HIM' and him.
just want your Say..

is it so!?

i really didn't listen the original SEL composed full track. BUT! at a recent
interview ARR mentioned: "There's also a version of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's 'Aaj
Ki Raat' in the soundtrack." So, i got confused (i presumed ARR composed the
version).

Moin,

Completely wrong info. Aaj ki Raat is ditto from Don and thankfully has not
been touched by ARR.

just listen to the tracks to believe it... and trust me, the album is not only
abt "jai ho".

it has got bunch of completely mind blowing tracks.

go to online stores/sites and check the tracks... NOW (check all the tracks 1
by 1 (skip M.I.A. tracks - 4 and 5))!

it's the ultimate answer for all those who thinks "ARR has lost it..."; "he is
not the same..."; "his old compositions were better... " or 90's were the best".

rahman is the best of the BEST!

i am out of words... lost in the tracks...!!!

Re: [arr] O... Saya

2008-12-04 Thread Gomzy™
O Saya is composed by ARR. ARR and MIA have written the lyrics together. The
english part in the track
is by MIA.

Paper planes is by MIA and not ARR. Also Aaj Ki Raat is by SEL.
