[arr] Rahman is best known for incorporating a wide range of musical influences

2009-02-06 Thread Vithur
NEW YORK, NY – Saavn, the world's largest digital distributor of Bollywood
music and movies, has released "Masters of Bollywood: A R Rahman," a music
album showcasing Rahman's 20 best songs, including a track from his latest
work in Delhi 6, which hits theaters in February.

The new album, Saavn officials said, is aimed at a growing consumer demand
for music from the award-winning composer of "Slumdog Millionaire." It's
available for download on leading online music download services.

"We are committed to providing a gateway to Bollywood music for people
around the world, and we are particularly proud and excited for the
recognition of A.R. Rahman's work on Slumdog Millionaire," said Vin Bhat,
Chief Executive Officer of the New York-based Saavn. "We made this album
because we wanted to introduce his new fans to more of his award-winning
work."

The album's highlights include, "Masakali" from Delhi 6, his latest work, as
well as "Guzarish" from Ghajini, "Kabhi Kabhi Aditi Zindagi" from Jaane
Akbar – all among the top 5 Bollywood albums of 2008. The album also
includes classic tracks from celebrated albums like Saathiya and 1947 Earth.

The album is available for download on iTunes, Amazon, Rhapsody, eMusic,
Zune, Puretracks, Napster, and Last.fm.

Rahman is among the best-selling musicians of all time, with estimated sales
topping 100 million records. He shot to fame in 1992 with Roja, earning
Rahman his first three National Film Awards, considered the equivalent of
the Oscars in India. Rahman is best known for incorporating a wide range of
musical influences – from pop to electronica – into Bollywood film scores,
redefining contemporary Indian music.

[arr] "I don’t have words to express my appreciation for Rahman" - Rajesh Ramanathan

2009-02-06 Thread Vithur
Music director Rajesh Ramanathan, besides composing for movies, is working
on two albums

*K*annada music director Rajesh Ramanathan has been in the music industry
for nearly 15 years. The man, who started off as a sound engineer, has come
a long way. The talented music director, who has worked with stalwarts like
Vishnuvardhan, Upendra, Sudeep and Indrajit Lankesh, speaks about his future
plans.

Not many know that Rajesh was the lead guitarist for a rock band called
Rockcliff that used to open for A R Rahman's band Down Sterling. He can also
play different forms of guitar like base and acoustic. No wonder when asked
about his inspirations, he has an array of them from different genres of
music. "R D Burman, Hamsalekha, Rajan-Nagendra and A R Rahman when it comes
to film music," he says. He is a huge fan of international artistes like
Whitesnake, Deep Purple, Guns & Roses and Bryan Adams as well.

So what does he think of Rahman's international recognition with Slumdog
Millionaire? "I don't have words to express my appreciation for Rahman. He
is God," declares he. "The spirituality and concentration with which he
works is what drives one to success. It is an inspiration for the others as
well."

besides they do have a Tamil tracks in the list, why not just might as
well put the Tamil versions for those tracks as well. Weird.

SDM is nice, but like you said, it's more than that. It signifies a
triumph for a career that has been incredibly rich and rewarding with
enormous musical prowess and success.

[arr] Oh - what a beauty of a song - MannChandre - Hats off sir

2009-02-06 Thread nagarajan raghavendran

Fello ARR fans,

I have been getting a feeling in the last 2 weeks that - even without playing
the actual music of the song - this particular tune is automatically ringing in
my ears.Honestly - it has been a divine musical treat and experience - that i
am sure all of you would agree with me.

Certainy a soul-stirring song from the great ARR. Credit should also go to
Gomathishree & Sukhwinder singh.

No doubt - ARR is blessed.

Some questions i would like to ask ARR - if given a chance is :

1. Undoubtedly "Humility" personified is ARR - How is he able to handle success
and criticism so very well despite everything happening around him?

2. If his dad - Mr.Sekar were to be live - No doubt he would have dedicated his
entire music to him - But in addition What is the "other special" thing he
would have wanted to do?

3. What were the 3 biggest lessons he has learnt in his life/in his career?

4. His musicians and compositions are always special to him. Which of his
compositions he considers to be the most toughtest/challenging ever and took a
long time to record?

5. His children - would sure one fine may become musicians. What is the
strongest advice/lesson he would give them - if they were to take music a their
full time career?

6. If he were to choose a film from yesteryears - and asked by a veteran
director to compose music - which film would that be?

6. Last but not least -  It would be a dream for all his fans to celebrate
something called say "ARR FANS DAY" and spends about an hour once a year?

Long live this musical genius

Regards

Nagi

[arr] Rahman on 'Slumdog Millionaire' criticisms

Rahman on 'Slumdog Millionaire' criticisms

IndiaGlitz
 [Friday, February 06, 2009]

The
epitome of humbleness has finally opened up to vent out his opinion
against the several brickbats that have been hurled at 'Slumdog
Millionaire' over the past days.
A.R.Rahman, the winner of the prestigious Golden Globe and a strong contender
for the upcoming Academy Awards  said,
"If creative people want to comment on a film, and
if I were a director, I would make another film and prove my point and
say this is what India is about".
Supporting the film the music wizard said that the
only thing that mattered to him is that he felt so good and extremely
positive after watching the film.
Rahman hailed the movie for depicting the reality
and also beautifully showcasing the way Indian economy has grown over
the years.
Praising director Danny Boyle, Rahman said that he
loved the film maker's vision of the screenplay and the artistic
quality of 'Slumdog Millionaire'.
Thinking in a broader perspective the composer added
"For me it is not about India alone. It is about the human spirit which
triumphs and this could have happened in China or Brazil or anywhere
else".

[arr] A bright anti Bollywood soundtrack by A.R. Rahman

At last, here's a whizzbang movie that captures the reality of Mumbai
streets with a kinetic energy and a driving storyline that makes this
hyperactive marvel a great piece of pure moviemaking.

Directed by Danny Boyle (*Trainspotting, 28 Days Later*), *Slumdog
Millionaire* is the story of Jamal Malik (the utterly believable Dev Patel),
the 18 year old orphan from the slums of Mumbai.

When we meet him he's just one question away from winning the Indian version
of 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?', with Bollywood superstar Anil Kapoor
great as the slimy host Prem Kumar. Jamal is arrested (life's been so awful
so far he takes it with amazing grace!) on suspicion of cheating.

Over the course of a night of beatings and threats, he tells the police his
picaresque life story, and of Latika (Freida Pinto), the girl he loved and,
maybe, lost.

There are more pleasures and terrors to come.

The script's based on the novel *Q and A*, by Vikas Swarup, and the
screenplay was written by Simon Beaufoy (*The Full Monty*) - an
extraordinary double act when you think about it and one sure to attract
post-colonial critique from the middleclass Indian and English press and
academies.

But there's no clumsy collision of cultures here - or at least not one that
diminishes the pure energy and joy of the narrative.

*Slumdog Millionaire* is a classic Dickensian yarn of survival from the
worst of starts that would have made Oliver Twist himself blanch.

Danny Boyle's camera swoops, hovers and dives into the slums and back
streets to give a sense of the sheer mad energies of the life below the
tourist snaps.

It's exhilarating and touching at once - a great piece of populist
storytelling that, like *Trainspotting* before it, manages to convey with no
little irony the terrible realities beneath the romantic dreams of Western
tourists.

A bright anti Bollywood soundtrack by A.R. Rahman adds a sparkle to the
soundtrack that reveals a whole new breadth and vitality in Indian musical
culture.

*Slumdog Millionaire* was recently named Best Film at the 2008 British
Independent Film Awards, and snaffled the Audience Choice Award at the
Toronto Film Festival.

Now it's picked up four Golden Globes so maybe there is a movie God - or
Gods - after all.

Come on, Oscar!

[arr] Pt Shivkumar Sharma's comments on ARR

2009-02-06 Thread Sreekrishnan R

Having performed on stage for 54 years and also having composed
for films, I understand that Indian classical musicians need not
compete with popular culture.

Even in the West, pop music
receives
much more hype than Western classical. Yehudi Menuhin is such a great
artiste but it’s a completely different story of hype for a Madonna or
a Michael Jackson!” says Pt Shivkumar Sharma, when asked how he felt at
AR Rahman’s global fame.

“But, I believe he (Rahman) is one to have introduced electronic music to
films. Other composers rely heavily on programmers,” adding,
“Earlier, we used to have arrangers. While the music directors would
also compose the interludes, the arranger would garnish them keeping in
mind the individual styles. That hardly happens now.”

Still, wherever a language song gets dubbed to Hindi, it reaches wider

[arr] "The biggest triumph is that India is being recognised," says Rahman.

2009-02-06 Thread Vithur
*Stiff competition for Rahman at the Oscars*
 NDTVCorrespondent
Friday, February 06, 2009 1:23 PM (New Delhi)

This year's race for the Oscars for best original song and best original
score is getting way more attention than usual.

In part for who's in it and also for those who've been left out. Bruce
Springsteen's intense song that plays over the closing credits of Darren
Oronofsy's *The Wrestler* seemed like a sureshot to make it to this years
list of best original song nominations after it won the Golden Globe in the
same category. But to everyones surprise the Boss' song was overlooked by
the academy. Instead it was India's A R Rahman who grabbed the limelight
bagging three nominations.

*Jai Ho* has become somewhat an anthem for anyone who has watched Danny
Boyle's *Slumdog Millionaire*. The track could well win A R Rahman his first
ever academy award.

Rahman is also up for the best original score award for the soundtrack
of *Slumdog
Millionaire*.

"The biggest triumph is that India is being recognised," says Rahman.

*Jai ho* was actually composed for the film *Yuvraaj* but after director
Subhash ghai rejected it for being too subtle, Rahman used it in *Slumdog*.
The track was written by legendary composer Gulzar and sung by Sukhvinder
Singh, who will be performing the hit song live along with Rahman at the
academy awards.

According to Sukhwinder Singh, "More than the fact that we've been nominated
the most exciting thing is that we'll be performing live."

Besides *Jai Ho*, *O Saya* has also got the Oscar nod. The collaboration
between Rahman and hip hop sensation MIA mixes politically motivated lyrics
and crunching electronic sound for a song whose global appeal clearly worked
with the academy. But Rahman shouldnt be writing his oscar winning speech
just yet.

There maybe only one other song competing against him but that song happens
to be by music legend Peter Gabriel.

In the category of best musical score, Rahman has some stiff competition.
Danny Elfman for the score of *Milk* is due for an Oscar having already been
nominated in previous years for his work in *Big Fish, Good Will Hunting*and
*Men in Black*.

Thomas Newman for the music of *Wall E* has been nominated for this one too
as well as Alexandre Desplat for *The Curious Case of Benjamin Button* and
James Newton Howard for *Defiance*.

While Rahman may be up against a formidable line up, having already won a
Golden Globe in the same category, we can all be quietly confident that
we'll be saying *Jai Ho* to A R Rahman on Oscar night.

One of the most successful musicians on the planet: AR Rahman
Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire has 10 Oscar nominations
Slumdog Millionaire offers a startling glimpse at life in the Bombay slums

Only two Indians have ever won an Oscar – costume designer Bhanu Athaiya for
*Gandhi* (1982) and arthouse director Satyajit Ray who received a lifetime
achievement award in 1992. However, with three Academy Award nominations
this year for Slumdog Millionaire – one for overall score and for two songs
– Chennai-based composer A R Rahman looks likely to be the third. He's also
up for the Best Music award at Sunday night's Baftas.

"We've been waiting for this for 80 years," said Rahman recently in *The
Hindu*, the Indian daily newspaper. "I think it will create a bridge between
Western and Indian audiences, and lead to more people exploring Indian
music."

While Rahman first came to the attention of Western audiences with his film
music for *Elizabeth: The Golden Age* (2007) and stage shows *Bombay Dreams*and
*The Lord o*f the Rings, his already stellar profile will go into overdrive
should he win. Numerous Hollywood offers have been coming his way since the
film's release.

Just as in a Bollywood film, in *Slumdog Millionaire* the music is almost as
important as the imagery and the narrative, and is central to its ambience
of grit and grandeur. "We wanted it edgy, upfront. Danny [Boyle, who
directed] wanted it loud," says Rahman.

Until now, the 43-year-old Rahman was often seen as a kind of Indian Andrew
Lloyd Webber, inventive and full of melodic facility, often veering into the
middle of the road. Lloyd Webber compares Rahman to Paul McCartney. What
makes the soundtrack something genuinely new is the collaboration of rappers
such as Blaaze (also based in Chennai), and more particularly the presence
of Sri Lankan/British musician MIA, who co-wrote the Oscar-nominated song *O
Saya*, and whose huge global YouTube hit *Paper Planes* is also on the
soundtrack. She brings some Lennon-like acidity to Rahman's McCartneyish
sweetness.

*Paper Plane*, with its percussive gunshots, Clash sample and lyrics about
visas and bombs in the voice of an immigrant sandwich-seller went top 10 in
the US and was the first song to top both the alternative and hip hop charts
there. When the song became a hit, MIA said: "The other songs on the chart
are Katy Perry and the Jonas Brothers. Then you see *Paper Planes* and it's
cool because there's hope. Thank God the future's here."

The combination of Rahman and MIA superbly complements the film's mix of
urban realism and fairytale in its gritty but epic score, with gorgeous
tunes riding on the dust of the slums. The score seems utterly contemporary,
its globalised sounds reflecting a world in which a man of Kenyan ancestry
is now in the White House. Forget about economic or cultural decoupling – we
are all in this together, and need inspiring moral tales for uplift.

Rahman describes MIA, who shares a Tamil family background, as "a real
powerhouse". "Somebody played me her CD, and I thought, 'Who is this girl?'
She came here [MIA recorded her last album partly at Rahman's studio in
Chennai] and knew all my work, had followed my work for ages. I said, 'Cut
this "my idol" crap. You have to teach me.' "

It was MIA who pressed for both songs to be nominated. "I knew *Jai Ho* was
a hit, and I thought we'd push for one song, but MIA thought we should push
for *O Saya*, too. And she proved to be absolutely right."

Rahman's first breakthrough tune *Chinna Chinna Aasai*, in the 1992 film *
Roja* was a song of a poor man dreaming of riches. Rahman's family had
struggled after his father, also a composer, died when he was nine and the
family were reduced to hiring out instruments. His father's eclectic tastes
was inherited by his son, who formed a rock band in his teens and studied
Western classical music (at Trinity College in London) and Indian classical
music.

Since *Roja*, he has written scores of hit movie soundtracks for films such
as *Lagaan*, *Dil Se* and *Guru*. Whether or not the published figures that
he has sold more than 100 million CDs and 200 million cassettes are accurate
(with piracy endemic in India it's anyone's guess how many he has sold), he
is already one of the most successful musicians on the planet.

"Compared with other Indian film composers, I only write about six movies a
year. Others write up to 60," he tells me in the unlikely setting of his
house in Tufnell Park, where he lives when he is in London.

He is softly spoken and surprisingly modest about his accomplishments,
ascribing his talent and luck to divine intervention: "I believe that
whatever comes at a particular time is a blessin

Delhi 6- A preview
Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's 'Delhi 6' is reportedly based on Mehra's growing
up years in Chandni Chowk. The story is shown against the backdrop of the
ancient walled city of Delhi, which reflects the true and real India.

DIRECTOR RAKEYSH Omprakash Mehra, after *Rang De Basanti*, is all set
to come out with his next film *Delhi 6*. The movie is reportedly based on
Mehra's growing up years in Chandni Chowk area of Old Delhi. The movie
staring Abhishek Bachchan and Sonam Kapoor will hit the screens on February
20. The title name of the movie is inspired from the pin code 110006 of the
area 'old Delhi' in Delhi.

Abhishek Bachchan plays the role of Roshan, who brings his ailing
grandmother (Waheeda Rahman) to India from the United States of America. She
wants to die in her very own country, India. Roshan is unaware of the food,
culture, sounds, religion and beliefs that make up the Indian society. On
arriving in India, Roshan engages himself with his grandmother's
neighborhood and becomes a part of the community. But Roshan does not know
that his very own people have decided to take advantage of his candid
nature. Little did he know that the trip to India will turn out to be the
longest journey of his life.

Sonam Kapoor plays the role of Bittu, a vivacious and bubbly girl who lives
in Delhi 6. She comes from a conservative family and wants to set herself
free from the typical Indian social structure.

The story is shown against the backdrop of the ancient walled city of Delhi,
which is completely different from New Delhi. *Other Articles by Gloria D
Souza * *more
**>>*
The city is almost a character in itself, which represents the chaos of
India, the people, their religions and beliefs.

This would be Sonam Kapoor's second film after Saawariya. Other than
Abhishek and Sonam, this UTV production produced jointly by Ronnie Screwvala
and Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra has Kunal Kapoor, Om Puri, Rishi Kapoor, Waheeda
Rahman, Atul Kulkarni, Divya Dutta, Shefali Shah, Deepak Dobriyal, Supriya
Pathak, Pawan Malhotra, Tanvi Azmi, Prem Chopra and many others.

Amitabh too will be seen in a special appearance, playing the role of his
real life son's grandfather in the movie.

AR Rahman has composed the music, whereas the lyrics have been penned by
Prasoon Joshi. Sonu Nigam, Mohit Chauhan and Sukhwinder Singh have sung the
songs of the movie.

However, only a few portions of the movie Delhi 6 were shot in Delhi. An
elaborate set, recreating the walled city was erected at Sambhar on the
outskirts of Jaipur in Rajasthan, where most part of the film was shot.

A must watch movie, which is tipped to be the biggest blockbuster of 2009.

[arr] A Humble Request!!! Kindly read

2009-02-06 Thread sujay t
Dear Fellow Rahmaniacs,

Its really heartening to see lots of mails and lots of people speaking about
our boss..i have been a silent member for a long time and hav been
enthusiastically reading all the mails.. Unfortunately for last couple of weeks
i wasn't able to read any... i have jus started reading a few dat too based on
the subject and i came across quite a few mails..about whether Rahman deserves
Oscars for Slumdog Millionaire?? and SDM is not the best score of Rahman and he
has produced lots of gems in regional films.

Whethere rahman was at its best in SDM and
whether you like it or not is a matter of personal interest and music is an art
and everybody can have their own opinion. Personally if u ask me i really liked
the music also considering the fact that he took only 15 days to compose the
entire sound tracks.. This will def go in as top 15 best compositions of Rahman
for me.. But when i see people telling that he
doesn't deserve oscars ..literally blood is coming out of my eyes when i read
those..I think probably they meant whether he deserves it for SDM.. If at all
any body has a doubt as to whether he deserves an Oscar at all.. My kind
request to them would be to kindly go to an E.N.T specialst and a brain
specialist to get ur ears and brain repaired.. If they said whether he desrves
for SDM??.. i wud like to answer them like
this.. For all those ppl forget that he is gonna win it for SDM.. think that he
is gonna win for the contribution that he has given to the world of Music and
for enthralling us for past 17 years with every single note of his music..and
showing us wats is true happiness,  patriotism, love and every other human
feeling is and sometimes even beyond, through his music.. if u consider it dat
way..i don think even those who listen to rahman songs wid half a ears wud
refuse it and there is no more deserving person in India than Rahman ..ofcourse
with due regads to all the legends in our country.. So my kind and humble
request to all d fello rahmanics and grp members wud be..pls stop analyzing
whether rahman deserves oscars or not for SDM whether dis is Rahmans best score
or not etc..and now he being nominated lets pray together for Rahman ji that he
gets the Oscars and make our country and every Indian proud

This is not from PULI and this is not composed by A R Rahman and the
singer is not Blaaze. This is a Russian song. In Russian Puli means
Whine. You can go to translate.google.com translate "puli" from
english to russian to get the text in russian then translate the
russian word to english and you'll get the meaning. Total fake. So
nothing to worry, the audio did not leak! Jai Ho

rahmanism, rahmanish, I myself dont know how to properly write it. Its
the feeling and state that a music puts me in, and only rahman does
