Today's World Renowned Allah Rakka Rahman is the same Dileep Kumar who
couldnt continue with his studies in his Tenth Standard. He has attracted
the full world because of his music. A Special Interview with him

Q :- Were you able to achieve such heights, because , you converted to
 Islam ?

I* think I could achieve this because of continous hard work, the passion
towards music and God's Grace. There are so many people who are behind this
 succcess and they are *
 **
 *1. Mellisai Mannar M.S. Viswanathan*
 *2. Isai Gnani Illayaraja *
 *3. Zakir Hussain*
 *4. Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan*
 *5. Ramesh Naidu*
 **
*These people have already put me in the Ladder. There is no connection
between Human success and Change in religion. *

 2. What have you learnt in your journey of life ?

*All my life, I had spent it between Love and Hatred. All the time, I was
fighting between these two. I chose the Path of Love and I am in front of
 you.*

 3. What is the role of your religion in Music ?

*I am a Sufi Muslim. Art is important for Society. I am using Music to
bring out some good feelings in the same. I dont accept some movies. The
Reason is I dont want to spread religion through movies. *

 4. What else do you like apart from Music ?

*Photography. I have recently bought a new camera. I have to start
learning it. I desire to take snaps of my children in different angles and
 feel happy. *

 5. Why did you stop your schooling at Tenth Standard ?

*I repented and felt for the same for 10 long years. Then, I stopped
feeling about the same. Einstein once said, It is this Education that stops
us from learning. Such an Education sometimes halts our Creativity. Thats
the reason I believe that its good that I couldnt complete the Formal
 Education. *

 6. How is Rahman at home ?

*Apart from composing music, I dont have much time left even to spend it
with my children. They get lot of compassion and pamperings from me. But my
wife is very strict and they fear her . *

 7. Why is there no Information available about your Family Members ?

*I lost my freedom after I became famous. Let them atleast enjoy the
 freedom that they have!!! *

 8. You could have spoken about the Problems faced by Sri Lankan Tamils in
 the Oscars Stage !!! ?

*It is the stage to felicitate artists from the entertainment and Art
Industry. There is no room for politics there and thats the reason I didnt
want to talk about anything else. But, I cant tolerate the pains underwent
by them at any instance. *
 **
 9. What is the happening which made you happy after winning the Oscars ?

*Director Danny Boyle had made the children of the Slums of Mumbai to act
in the movie Slumdog Millionaire. They got red Carpet welcome in the US.
That happening excited me a lot. A lot of other people have also come
forward to start helping them. *
 **
 10. What did you do with all the prizes that you received ?

*Whosoever gave me Flower Bouquets, I accepted the same with Love.
Whosoever gave me Champaigne' Bottles, I returned the same to them. *
 **
 11. Can you say one word on Maniratnam and Illayaraja ?

*The former is a person who doesnt talk much, but made everyone look at
him with awe. The latter captured the hearts of everyone through his music.
 *

 12. Many of your dreams got fulfilled. What else is left out ?

*I would like to create a Music Program with World Class Standards. It
would be like Sydney Opera House and the participants would be Indians.
We , Indians have all the talent in us to exhibit the same. With God's
Grace, all of this will happen. *

While we are at it, interested members can give a hearing to Firaaq
music also - a Nandita Das film on Gujarat riots - there are two
hardcore ghazals, there is one pure instrumentals that is quite
mesmerizing, and there is a recitation of Faiz's timeless nazm Ye daag

But yeah, Firaaq is a single theme album - a serious type, a saddening

Thanks for leading me to it. Someone had previously pointed to ranaji
song of the film so I heard only that and that was indeed an amusing
political caricature never heard till now in Indian screen.

I didn't hear rest of the songs then, but your recommendation made me
listen to them and I was instantaneously captivated by its firebrand
music, and I felt prompted to hire the DVD and see it. And I was in a
treat of a reasonably lovely film for a change.

Bringing this thread back to ARR, Anurag Kashyap had written dialogues
for Yuva and Water and had written (adopted) the script of Nayak.

Now, coming to the music. This is one genre that is missing in ARR's
work so far. I just loved the firebrand, motivating lyrics and music
that almost runs through the entire film as its basic theme.

The nearest ARR had ever come to such kind of music could be in Lagaan's
chale chalo. And in spite of that being a different sort of, and lovely
song - this exact emotion didn't come up any near in Chale chalo that
are flooding Gulal's several songs. ARR is basically of the soft nature,
he might not be comfortable to display furious emotions in the true
earnest and he might be softening them - it can be called making subtle,
still, it dilutes them in a negative sense.

Another album of ARR having possibility of this kind of music was Mangal
Pandey, but that was a confused film and music didn't show its full
impact in that film in any case.

And yet another ARR album of ARR where such music could have been was
Bhagat Singh, but I have no complains about that because Bhagat Singh
was a clear concept depicting the life of the martyr and the times of
indian independence struggle, which it did beautifully. They never
intended to boil the blood of the viewers, and it is OK because the
film was sincerely made. ARR's music also followed that line.

Aarambh song of Gulaal would have done ARR proud had that been in any of
the above films.

Shaher song is also that sort of but more expressive, that is
descriptive of the current scenario while Aarambh is more visionary,
prophecying sort of. Shaher revokes glimpses of Swades' Yu hi chala chal
though the entire flow of both the songs are quite different.

Duniya is also having a unique pathos, sadness, craving - without being
melodramatic. And Duniya genre of music would have a place in 1947 Earth.

Those who have not yet heard Gulaal can still notice that it sounds a
poor people's music - he he he - I mean, low budget. Not many
instruments, not many effects, not many intervening, multi-track tunes.
More effects have beed brought just be inflections of vocals. It is
rustic, it is earthly - and that is the beauty of it. ARR's music is
having a richness and thoroughness and perfection.

I wish ARR to explore Gulaal genre of music. ARR should work with Anurag
Kashyap as director.

The Film

Now that Slumdog Millionaire swept most of the categories it was nominated for
at this year’s Oscar ceremony, I was able to watch the film again on DVD, and
let my gripes rest. I must be honest. In my news report and my weekly rants on
the podcasts, whenever I mentioned this movie, it was all negative. I still
feel it was far from the best film of the year, but I did genuinely enjoy
myself when I saw it for the first time. I strongly considered decreasing my
rating, but no matter how much I disagreed with the amount of statues it took
home, the film was indeed well made and thoroughly compelling. The following is
my original review.

For the majority of moviegoers all over the world, seeing the real India is not
common on the big screen. Occasionally a film is released, but rarely does its
popularity increase enough to show people what the country is actually like.
Slumdog Millionaire reveals India in its true form, the beauty and the
ugliness. This is an adventure of the highest caliber, and a pinnacle for
Director Danny Boyle. It will agitate a wide range of emotions deep within you
to the surface. You will smile, clench your fists, turn your head in fear, and
maybe even shed a tear or two. It is a joyously unique take on an electrifying
story.

As Slumdog Millionaire opens, Jamal Malik (Dev Patel) has already won
10,000,000 rupees on the Indian version of the game show Who Wants to be a
Millionaire. We the viewers are even asked a question as one would be as a
contestant, but I’ll leave that for you to discover. Jamal grew up as a boy
from the slums of Mumbai, and would be on the run most of his life. How could
he be answering all these questions correctly when those of higher education
had never attained that level? He must be cheating. To prove this, the Police
Inspector (Irfan Khan) and his Sergeant interrogate and torture him to dig out
the truth. He claims he just knew the answers, and proceeds to express various
instances in his life which relate to the questions he received. This journey
takes him through many adventures with his brother Salim, numerous villains,
and the love of his life Latika.

The manner in which Slumdog Millionaire is woven together is what makes the
story so enthralling and entertaining. The questions become stories, and the
stories act as a tale from childhood to that of a young man still searching for
his impossible romance. The plot threads lace around one another in such a
glorious and organic way that the suspense becomes maddening, and that is a
good thing. The characters we encounter along Jamal’s path to the chair make a
lasting impact because of what they mean in terms of the money he is building
and the advances in difficulty. You’ll be surprised at how much you remember
since this is divided into sections, but those sections uncoil as one fine
piece of work.

This is a movie that is sure to make strides with luring more viewers into
watching a story with subtitles. It has that in common with Crouching Tiger,
Hidden Dragon and Pan’s Labyrinth. To be honest, this includes many scenes with
the cast exchanging in English, but a huge chunk is communicated in Hindi
subtitles, albeit very creative and colorful ones, and this could easily serve
as an introductory film for those contemplating that leap into enjoying a full
film in a different language. This will attract people of any language because
its themes are universal: rags to riches and love.

Singling out specific actors in this picture is not easy since the three main
characters of Jamal, Latika, and Salim are played by three different performers
of varying ages. And everyone possesses chemistry like a unit. If anyone is
deserving of individual praise it is Dev Patel, who portrays the older Jamal,
and sits in the millionaire’s seat with the face of a kid who has gone through
hell and back, yet has never given up on his dreams. The most notable name in
the cast is Irfan Khan, who has been developing a solid reputation after
supporting roles in such terrific films like The Namesake, The Darjeeling
Limited, and A Mighty Heart. Most of this journey is experienced right along
with Jamal, but it is important to think from the Inspector’s point of view as

me to everyone in the room, including Amir Khan – an actor director in
Hindi cinema I admire – quality films. They're recording the songs for
Amir's next film Gajini which comes out next month.

I hung out,, we had dinner then about 2am AR put a new track up started
discussing the lyrics with me Suzanne, the singer who had previously
written some lyrics for the track. He sketches out the overall theme style
hands me the pad pen while he goes into studio B to record a singer on
another track for the film. I wrote new lyrics, pages of couplets - AR
chooses his favorites, I came up with a new chorus by 530am we recorded
the song to completion. That's how I like to do it! Suzanne sang it
wonderfully – a touch of RB Indian inflections pronunciation with nice
  harmonies ! What fun!

I genuinely enjoy working with AR – I love the immediacy of the process, he
pushes me to be a better writer, we laugh, I grow, I'm challenged it's
  satisfying.

Thank you Universe for the opportunities, thanks Wendy for taking the

to get film song examples for all these ragas to help the new generation

So what better way to develop appreciation for carnatic music than by

This way, the west will also have a better understanding of the musical

I found this website that gave a small sample of ragas that corresponded
to different songs Rahman has done:
   http://prabhuthemusiclover.tripod.com/arrahman/id3.html

and the outcome is par beyond excellence. Director S.J.Surya who directed
Vaali, Kushi and New is back with Anbe Aaruyire (Ah Aah). Vaali has done a
splendid job (refrained from English words is a wonder) penning the lyrics
for all six songs in the movie. A.R.Rahman lends his hand composing in the
New Age genre; the tunes are as usual fresh and innovative. Let's feed into
 the tracks;

Anbe Aaruyire : Sturdy occurrence.

A.R.A.R.Rahman.

The song starts with a different voice (aa flange effect) and drum
loops and all of a sudden you have A.R.Rahman entering the melody with
an unusual note, which breaks the current ambience. A.R.Rahman sounds
so different in this number, not with his high pitched vocal but kinda
suttle version this time. He seems to be maturing.

The song seem to have the strong bhava of raga saramathi. The lyrics
arraira kodi perghalil oruvan adiyaen Tamilzhan nan unggal nanban which
translates: amongst 6 million human population (India), as a Tamil
servant I am your friend, is so touching and delivers a strong message
straight to your heart. This is a promising start for A.R.Rahman's
tamil musical venture and will be a trademark for his return down
south. The Tamil syllables 'Ah Aah is used all over the song, even in
some part of the lyrics. The rhythm of the song is sophisticated plus
peppy loops woven around it, creates an energetic ambience. This song
is at its own class. The strings are beautifully added in the 2nd
charanam and the female and kids chorus are

[arr] Rahman does it again?

2009-03-31 Thread raamkumar vaidyanathan
What if Sonu Niigaam rendered a song with Kylie Minogue, with music composed by
A R Rahman? Well, this ensemble did just that for an upcoming film and Sonu
describes it all as magical.

“The number is an amalgamation of Western and Punjabi bhangra,” says the singer
who has sung for the composer even in Tamil (remember Varayo Thozhi from
Jeans?)
And, that’s not all. We got the singer to
tell us more details about the number.

“It has turned out to be a great mix,” he adds, “Rahman has come up with great
melody. While Kylie sings her bit in English, I bring a Punjabi element to the
song.” So, the number will be one part of South Indian Rahman mixed with North
Indian Niigaam and garnished with Aussie Kylie… now, that’s what we call a
jingle mingle!

i agree with adithya completely...no amount of praise can be heaped upon
rehna tu...its about as 'vintage' as rahman can get.its really amazing
that the best song on a given album is always sung by rahman himself!!

 Hi folks,
On last saturday evening, a programme called STAR NIGHT SINGERS held at our

All western vocal students did a very fantastic live drama with live Piano
and Cello playback. It was such a beautiful occasion that K.M Conservatory
will ever have.Everyone did like a professional stage musical artist. No

The Western Vocal Faculty Kavitha Baliga organized and K.M students

can i be the black horse here?? :D... haha... If u ask me, i seriously see
Anjali - Duet as ARR's best work in his career. Nothing beats that tune,
prelude, interlude, flute, saxophone, lyrics, singers... u name it... its
100%. Im so so so surprised DUET album never receive a National Award, or any
equavalent pristiage award for it. One of the best Album and has a best song in
TFM for the past 20 or 30 years...

sorry to say but both of your mails did not make much sense to me. if we would
not say ourselves die-hard ARR fans and not share our love for him here, where
else we are supposed to do that? after all this is the main objective of having
a fan group.
and what Dinesh described was certainly not stupid but exciting and
heart-warming.

There should be a code of conduct which every member must follow. Read thru
all archive mails, you will understand how many mails actually are worth a
read. Dont many of us skip a lot of the Reply mails for a particlular topic.
 Unnecessary replies.

wow.. this is simply a group to share our views, this is not some assembly
or conference or classroom etc. why do we need to be so formal? the only
purpose is to share our views on ARR and his music.

Donot take music as the only thing in life.

but who is doing that? i don't think one would take music as the only thing in
his life.

If may of you guys are professionals and are just participating in this forum
at your leisure, I am glad. But this is for those young fans who have not yet
 become professionals.

well many of fans here, like me too, are ARR's fans since their school times.
did it spoil their career? i don't think so. being a music or ARR fan does not
mean that people don't do anything else. i am sure fans here are of course
serious in their professional lives and successful too.

 Hi Fellow Rahman Fans,

Let me make things clear first...

I am member of this group for about 2 years now.
I am a software professional. I read all mails posted in this forum everyday.
I even went to that extent that I pulled out all archive mails that were
posted before I became a member of this group. I respect his music a lot and
am a die hard fan of his music.

Just like you guys, I love AR for who he is more than his music.
He has taught many of us what are the attributes of a gentleman, which has a
very strong influence on the way we behave now.

So, why did I write such a mail??
Answer: I wanted my point to go across strongly. I really did not mean
Rahmaniacs as STUPID. If so, then I too am on among you guys.
I want this group to be one of the finest groups in Yahoo. There should be a
take-away or a value-add to oneself after reading these mails.
I know most of the good things that we fans do as Rahman's fan,
 example:
Distribution of food to poor by Rahman's fans - I SALUTE U GUYS
Sharing new about KM Music School - Teaching poor students music for free - I
SALUTE U GUYS - these things kindles humaneness in us
Sharing news about what guitar genius told in KM Music School - The points he
made were the take aways for us fans.- I SALUTE U GUYS
Akash's instrumental tracks - aspiring other fans also to try their hand at
music and getting constructive feedbacks from other fans.  - I SALUTE U GUYS
 And many more

I want things like this to happen more than not.
These are the things which I think adds value to our group. Tell me if you
 guys disagree.

I agree this is the best forum for us fans to express our feelings and be
happy, but being a Rahman's fan expects us to display very high standards in
 our character.
We cannot afford to post whatevr we want. There should be a code of conduct
which every member must follow. Read thru all archive mails, you will
understand how many mails actually are worth a read. Dont many of us skip a
lot of the Reply mails for  a particlular topic. Unnecessary replies. I point
needs to be made. You met Rahman, well its a good news, express it, but why
do you tak that topic so much further.

And why did I say that talking about music doesn't fill our belly??
Answer: Many of you replied that I was trying to be too smart by making my
 point.
What do I get in return? We are a family, if someone or something goes a
little haywire, we as members should take the initiative to explain things to
other family members. Thats what I did. My point is still the same. Donot
take music as the only thing in life. If may of you guys are professionals
and are just participating in this forum at your leisure, I am glad. But this
is for those young fans who have not yet become professionals.

At this point, I would like to quote about what the Tamil Actor Ajit Kumar
told once to his fans: Come to a movie theatre, watch that 2-3 hours movie,
enjoy, laugh, cry, dance while you are at the theatre. But once the movie is
over, get back to your life. Work hard, educat your kids, take cae of your
family and basically fullfil your needs in life.
I think he is the only film star that I know who said, he doesn't want
fan-clubs. Thats the display of true care that you have on your fans. Its
 simple but true.

I have the same feeling for AR as I think of Ajit Kumar. AR would also think
 in the same lines.

 Listen to his music,
