[arr] Re: 'Jai Ho' did not deserve an Oscar: Jagjit Singh
I remember reading many emails on this matter a month ago ? Does that mean Jagjit Singh said this AGAIN ? That is really odd ! Anyways, Jai Ho got an Oscar, so Jagjit Singh can't do much about it except make such statements and then give a pseduo-logical / analytical explaination to what he said. May be for publicity of his new album ? Moreover to which song the Oscar should go is a decision taken by the OSCAR management based on the bunch of songs which is in front of them, so they felt Jai Ho was better over others in complete packaged product by which I mean the lyrics, music, vocals... everything ! It's a free country, so Jagjit Sing can certainly say what he should say. we ignore it ! In any case, Jagjit Singh is good but Rahman is GREAT ! Sultan's whooping budget IndiaGlitz [Tuesday, April 07, 2009] Superstar Rajinikanth will be soon be seen in an animated film thanks to his multi-talented daughter Soundarya Rajinikanth. The film is being made under the banner of Soundarya's Ocher Studios and the movie is rumored to have hi-end animation. The best part is the central character of the film Sultan who is an exact depiction of Rajini. We all know that each shot in the film is actually shot with the superstar first and then the animation specialists work on it to bring a very satisfying natural look. Reports indicate that so much of money has gone into the making of `Sultan-The Warrior', as much a grand 60 crore rupees! Never imagined that animation films would be so costly! The film has another high light in the sense it is a multilingual film and is being made in eighteen languages. This is a new record that is being made by the superstar's super daughter. Grapevine also has it that , Tamil heroine Vijayalakshmi will be lending her personality to this animated movie as the superstar's heroine. Soundarya Rajinikanth, a chip off the old block we should say! http://www.indiaglitz.com/channels/hindi/article/46132.html

I don't think anyone is less of a Rahman fan if they think that Jai Ho is not a good enough song to win an award or if they think it's not one of Rahman's best. I like the song a lot for its energy and uplifting quality, but don't think it's one of Rahman's best compositions in terms of pure music. In terms of positive emotions and inspiration for the young and young at heart, I think it is one of his best. I don't take Jagjit's comments seriously and neither should anyone here. As talented and well known Jagjit is, I frankly find him to be one of the most arrogant and condescending musical artists out there today (based on interviews, TV appearances, comments made to the media, etc. etc.). He has an extremely narrow definition of good music and is quite rigid minded in general. Whether Jagjit or anyone else likes it or not, the fact is that the song Jai Ho has touched millions of people and sent people who watched the song in theaters feeling very positive and hopeful. It's all about the raw emotions, not the music or lyrics by themselves. You cannot isolate any one element of this song and declare perfection. It's how the song fit into the whole scheme of the plot and ending and the emotions that were generated within people. Oscars are not awarded frivolously and for no reason. There's a reason why this song was given an award whether you agree or disagree. Mr. Singh and his comments do not deserve this much attention in our ARR fan group here. If you asked ARR himself what he thought of Mr. Singh's comments, ARR would just joke about it or might say, it's not one of my best songs, even though it touched people. everyone is entitled to their own opinions. [arr] Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya, is said to have music that he did for Chennaiyil Oru Mazhaikaalam
Current updates on Endhiran Sultan The Warrior Endhiran, The Robot: The film is planned for release late this year, though it is widely believed that the film will hit screens only next year. Endhiran is Sun Pictures’ first film as direct producers and despite the sagging economy, the film is made on a never-heard-before budget. But Sun Pictures’ involvement in the film is also the reason that not a lot of news is available about the film, as there is strong media rivalry with the vernacular medium. Like every Shankar film, shooting for the film began with the songs and the crew went to Peru for the same. Rajini doing a double action has left him bingeing and starving to gain and lose weight for his different roles. Playing a robot and a scientist, it requires the complete cooperation and dedication of the superstar, and reports state that over 60 percent of the film is done. Small screen fame actor Devadarshini, is also acting in Endhiran in an important character. The actor is said to be playing Rajini’s sister in the movie where Rajini is holding bangle ceremony for his sister. (Valaikaappu). Shankar canned this shot with a group of women participating in the event with exquisite ornaments and silk sarees. And despite his busy schedule, Rahman is said to have assigned priority to Endhiran and has composed three songs, and each have been shot also, in Peru, Chennai (AVM Studios) and Hyderabad (Ramoji Rao Film City). Rahman has also clearly stated that he invited Yogi B only to do a rap song and not Rajini’s introduction, which will be only by SPB, as Rahman hinted. The next schedule of shooting is all set to kick off at SRM University campus located in Kaattangulathur in Chennai-Trichy National Highway.. Sultan The Warrior: The film, directed by Rajini’s daughter, Soundarya Rajinikanth, was originally slated for a summer release. Despite over 90 percent of the shooting being complete, it now seems like the film will not hit screens until July. The reason? Rajini’s busy shooting schedule. With the superstar also working on another megabudget film, Endhiran, it is said that he is having difficulty allocating time for Sultan. This is because for Endhiran boasts of a power packed star cast, including Ash and Rajini, and it is taking a lot of effort to make them available at the same time. Ash is also working for Maniratnam’s Raavan, and this is making the date squeeze even worse. Shot for most part in a motion capture studio in Hyderabad, Sultan The Warrior will boast of never-seen-before action blocks, shot extensively in Vietnam. Those in the crew let out that the film has an unbelievable intro scene for the superstar. Being an action adventure, Rajini fans can also see ultimate action from him. After all, anything is possible with the help of CG, and when it comes to the Superstar, everybody loves whatever he does. Both these films of the Superstar have music only by AR Rahman. In fact, Rahman is working only on his projects in Tamil as he is busy with other Bollywood projects to concentrate on Tamil now. The only other film he is doing now, Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya, is said to have music that he did for Chennaiyil Oru Mazhaikaalam. For Sultan The Warrior, Rahman has composed all five songs and work is complete on his part. Now, the film’s shoot has to be done for him to do the background score. http://treasure-space.blogspot.com/2009/04/current-updates-in-endhiran-sultan.html regards Jon

[arr] Rahman: I have to be more careful now
*Rahman: I have to be more careful now* Rahman believes that he will have to put more effort into his music as his audience has grown. There will not be a change in my music but I have to be more careful - because I guess my music will be noticed by more people now, he says. I guess we have to culturally accommodate as much as we can. There is definitely a sense of pressure but that's good. Good music always comes with honesty and when made directly from the heart and by being conscious of melody.” Rahman is also highly impressed by MIA’s work. MIA collaborated with him on the song ‘O Saya’, which was also nominated for the Oscar. “I find her an extraordinary artiste who makes political statements with her music,” he told a local website. “Some years back, she had come down to record her music at my studio because she needed some specific kind of percussion and had expressed a wish to work with me then because she liked the energy in my music. At that time, I was busy. But when this opportunity arose, I naturally took it.” Many artists have said that ‘Jai Ho’, which won him the Oscar, is not at all as good as most of his other compositions. Rahman, however, says that even if it isn’t as good, it’s exactly the song the film needed. He says, “Well, I had to make something that was right for the film. It wasn't a situation that demanded a Beethoven's Symphony or a Ba-ba black sheep! Composing for films is not about showing the world what you can do. You have to get something right first and then try and excel in it. The reverse way would be disastrous.” http://www.planetradiocity.com/musicreporter/gossip.php?gossipid=1090 -- regards, Vithur
[arr] Jai Ho- not A.R's best?
I respect people's opinion about how Jai Ho doesn’t come across as Rahman’s best in their opinion. That’s fine. We live in a subjective world. I didn’t think it was his best either. But that’s the point- he wasn’t competing with himself (or rather his other tracks), at this year’s Oscars! If we had tracks from Roja, Lagaan or even Thiruda Thiruda in competition with Jai Ho, then I can understand how fans can be disappointed that Jai Ho won over a Mitwa or a Kojam Nilavu or even a Dil se re. But they were not there to compete with Jai Ho. So why fuss about how it’s not his best and that’s why it should have not got an Oscar – or something in those lines! When one day we have two of Rahman’s albums up for nominations at the Oscars, we can moan about why one got it over the other. So save the discussions (and unnecessary disappointment) till then! Also, if Lagaan had won the Oscar for best foreign movie, that would not have got Rahman an Oscar. There is no “Best Music in a Foreign Film” category at the Oscars.Yes, his music would have been part of an Oscar winning movie but A.R.Rahman, the man himself would not have been an Oscar winner. This will apply to all future Indian projects. They will always be classified as “foreign films”. So although we’d like Oscars for all our favourite Rahman soundtracks, that ain’t going to happen because they have mostly been for “foreign films”, in the eyes of the Academy. Thank God for Danny Boyle!

[arr] revisit
Hi Guys The recent debate about jagjit singhs sensational comments has got everyone talking. For me, it has in fact brought back memories of a wonderfully composed masterful album by our champion composer. That is Maa Tujhe Salaam (1997) The song which I thought is worth a mention is not the more popular title track- Maa Tujhe Salaam, but a 7 minute brilliant piece called 'Revival'. Rahman relies on intricate violen and saxophone arrangements , interspersed with guitar riffs. He demonstrates exemplory control over the music, never once going over the top and maintaining a steady tempo. BUT, the real winner in this piece is the singing. The trademark 'rahmanic' chorus touches the very core of ones heart. The lead singer demonstrates superlative singing prowess. It is remarkable that rahman manages a winner by relying primarily on the lead singers singing ability. I would like to know what is the name of the lead singer in this song. u guys might be wondering..I have not been so generous with my praising of rahman since i joined the group. But, this song my dear friends is what i would say is really worth taking note of. The delicate instrumentation, and masterful singing is absolute vintage rahman. This is really what rahman is all about..all class abd grace. Anyone knows the lead singer??... Anish.
[arr] ARR and the Value of Detachment
There are many brilliant artists in this world who achieve great, long lasting success. But, there are very few who are able to control their success and instead, their success controls them. ARR is someone who always stays in control. How? When someone achieves great heights, great fame, fortune, recognition, etc., it's extremely easy for the human mind and spirit to get caught up in the frenzy and taking that success too seriously, ultimately, succumbing to that success and surrendering to the ego. Take a look at Himesh Reshamiya as an example. I don't listen to his music, but I have to admit, he had the guts, the energy, the vision to carve out a nice niche for himself and he has achieved great success, built up a huge fan base, etc. etc. An ordinary artist cannot do what he did. Unfortunately for him, he took his success and himself way too seriously and is now in my eyes a victim of his own arrogance and narcissism. Sure, he still has his fans and he may continue to belt out commercial hits, but let's face it, the party's over for him. Look at it this way: When you climb up against gravity, the more weight you carry, the harder the climb becomes and ultimately, you stop climbing and if the weight you build up becomes too great to handle, you could fall, and fall hard. If you climb without a lot of weight and don't accumulate weight on the way, you will keep going, God willing. Now, look at our man, ARR. Despite being in the industry for years and years, he has always maintained a dominant and successful position in his career. Yes, he has had peaks and valleys in terms of commercial success along the way, but his general status, the respect he's given and earned, the goodness that people associate with him remains the same. ARR has done what not many artists are able to do, and that is to create some space between himself and his success and to not let his ego become too heavy. It's his strong family values, incredible faith and spirituality that allows this type of detachment. He never lets his success control him. He is always wary of overexposure and takes nothing for granted. He has the ability to generate a healthy, broad perspective on his career, his life, his relationship with the ultimate divine that he does not allow himself to surrender to his own worldly success. It takes a very unique combination of personal elements and life experiences to maintain this attitude and strength of mind. But, his is an example that we can all learn to apply to our own lives. If ARR has taught me one thing about life, it is the value of detachment and not taking too seriously those things that are worldly and temporary. ARR has reinforced to me the value of creating space between ourselves and our actions and consequences, thereby helping to create a strong anchor against the winds and storms of life. ARR is surely enjoying the ride that is his life, but he remains in the driver's seat of his own success, while ironically, surrendering to the almighty. He maintains control of his success despite surrendering himself to permanence and because of that surrender at the same time, helping to create that healthy detachment. Thanks to a good friend with whom I had a discussion about this with last night, helping to stimulate these thoughts within me and posting them here.

Re: [arr] 'Jai Ho' did not deserve an Oscar: Jagjit Singh
Although personally, Jai ho is not my favorite song in Slumdog Millionire. I say it DESERVES the oscar. Why? Because the reality is that it is the only song that captured the imagination and the the attention of a totally different culture which may not have paid much attention to a song in Hindi ever before. This foreign song captured the hearts of so many people. Thats where its strength lies. There are so may good songs that Rahmanhas made, and how many went unnoticed? Quite a few. The strength of music also lies in how it reaches out to people, and Jai ho did that more than any other song on the Slumdog millionaire CD. THats why it deserves it. --- On Tue, 4/7/09, Anish Gupte musimax2...@gmail.com wrote: From: Anish Gupte musimax2...@gmail.com Subject: Re: [arr] 'Jai Ho' did not deserve an Oscar: Jagjit Singh To: arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com Date: Tuesday, April 7, 2009, 3:20 PM well im not a great fan of jagjit singh or anything...but thats nt the point... in fact the 2 songs u mentioned (yeh jo des ..and maa tujhe salaam) are in fact way better than jai ho ..lol rahman deserved an oscar fr sure..but not for jai ho...why... i prefer 'dreams on fire' and 'mausam and escape' to jai ho too... anyway..lets just say that 'for me' jai ho did not deserve the oscar..but rahman won it so what more can rahman fan ask for??
