Thanks for the heads up! Sounds quite nice, especially the tango and the
ethereal vocals, though the clanging bells are too dramatic. Since it's a short
film perhaps we can hope for a digital release for the music.

Sivaji was definitely a let-down (at least for me) but ATM is one of my most
favorite Tamil albums (though I don't understand Tamil). my most favorite is
Ellapugazhum, what a groovy and energetic song. a perfect for ARR to sing.
first time I heard it I was so excited and was like dancing.. close 2nd is
Kelamal, so sweet and rocking song. though the beats remind me those songs
from 80 era (especially Modern Talking's songs). there is not much going on
in the song, much of an electronic song but still ARR made it a winner all
the way. the female singer's voice is so fresh and soothing, like Shreya
Ghoshal's. I must say her voice is a big highlight of the song. another good
thing is the picturization. kudos to the choreographer especially for
designing simple but very suitable dance steps. watching the video made me
realize how easy it is to dance on this song. you don't need to be a dancer
for that! my third favorite is Ponmagal Vandaal. it has a very

catchy tune, something different from the maestro. then come the Nee Marilyn
Monroe, then Valayapatti, and at the end Maduraikku Pogathedee.

Some comments since this isn't the final cover-

Fix the lousy Photoshop work for the image on the right (front-flap). The photo
outline does not blend well with the gray background and you can see the
originally white portions of the background at the top of ARR's head.

I do not understand the obsession with ALL CAPITALS. Why oh why should
everything associated with A R Rahman have to be in capital letters? I don't
mean the title but the author's bio and the blurb beneath the Oscar photo.

And while you folks are at it can you also fix the massive ode to capital
letters in ARR's website as well? If there ever was a god of Capital Letters
he'd grant ARR a permanent place in heaven thanks to the excessive devotion
shown in www.arrahman.com . Sorry, Gops! But it's been more than a year since I
first cribbed about ALL CAPS in the website. Consider this yet another reminder.

Luck follows success and success follows hardwork. After the success of
Slumdog millionaire and marathon of awards at Oscar Ceremony, AR Rahman has
reached new heights of his career.

The latest talk is that Rahman is all set to compose his magical Tunes for
the next Bond film. This would be 23rd James Bond film which will be
produced by Barbara Broccoli and co producer is McDougal who earlier
produced a successful movie Beach jointly with Danny Boyle.

Danny Boyle is the key person who values the talent of AR Rahman and is

Feeling like a millionaire: AR Rahman picked up two Oscar's for best

He's worked on films since he was a teenager, taking over the role of
family breadwinner after his father died and followed in his footsteps as a
 composer.

While he had stints writing advertising jingles in India, composing for
films has been his life's work so far, yet from his studio in Chennai he
admitted to CNN he didn't want to score films.

I kept saying next year I'll quit, next year I'll quit. And finally
because I was sucked into it more and more, now I have the Oscars he said.

His Oscar performance and acceptance speech was one of the most memorable
 at this year's awards.

performance then I felt at ease and then I became very philosophical as you
know, and I chose love over hate and all this stuff, he told CNN.

Feted by many in media, his hit Jai ho was covered by the Pussy Cat
Dolls, but the softly spoken Rahman doesn't find it hard to remain grounded.
Rahman runs a music school in Chennai, the KM Music Conservatory that keeps
him motivated and reminds him that music has a potency that can transform
 lives.

Music can do so many things. I have my foundation, I have my music school.
I have people teaching, kids are learning, so I take this as an advantage,
the popularity and taking that and putting it into good things, which
motivated me to work harder, he said.

As well as working on more Hindi films, Hollywood beckons, if only for a
new experience. There have also been rumors he may score the next James Bond
 film.

I have a couple of offers from Hollywood. Pure American movies which I
thought for the heck of it let's do it and a couple of other surprises that
you'll know very soon if it works out. Big surprises I think, he said.

Ah! To even recollect ARR' s initial journey during early 90's, it gives me
immense pleasure and makes me sail back to those vintage days...where. .i
was unconciously inclined towards music only because of this wonder man, A R
Rahman..! He is the most primary reason for the transition towards Musical
world for me...:)

This time..i chose May Maadham..,  an album with its great melody and
Rahman's signature sheen its full glory and pomp.! I hold this album to be one
of ARR's most spectacular works ever..!!! But i am utterly disappointed by the
fact that this entire album did not do great among the masses. I guess...only
due to this fact, ARR thought of recreating the same magical score for Hindi
audiences in Love You Hamesha.. , but again failed to create sensation due to
the bad fate of the movie... :-(

1) Maarghazhi Poove   Shobha Chandrashekar

( Same as Ek Ladki Thi from Love You Hamesha)

Can anybody confirm me that this singer (Shobha) is the mother of
popular actor Vijay..??? If so, i wonder why she didnt continue her singing for
long time..? Nevertheless, comng to the song, it begins with a great flute
aalap with a royal touch of Kausalya Supraja Rama... - the Suprabhata
chantings- as its backdrops along with the techno beats by Rahman..!! Call it
fusion/ remixgets ur ears a great morning dose of pleasure..!! ! Perfect
ringtone for the mobile phonesloved across south india...even some parts of
North!! Shobha delivers a first class rendition and also the chorus part is
enchanting.. . Particularly, towards the end, Shobha and ARR gives us a
morning classical  feast to our ears!!!
An ever memorable Rahman's creation..!! !

 2) Palakkattu Machhanukku - Shahul Hameed, G V Prakash Kumar

(Same as Botal Tod De in Love You Hamesha)

The demised Shahul Hameed croons this song towards the fag end
of his life along with ARR's own nephew GV Prakash, who's into music these
days..!!! One yearns for Shahul to listen more n more after listening to these
songs. Its a very modern, hep, peppy, trendy song! ARR exhibits his passion for
technology and western instruments in this song so clearly that one can
picturise by hearing.!! GV Prakash, with his very shrill and kiddish voice
provides a naughty atmosphere.
Vintage Techno Rahman at his Best

3) Madrasa Sutthi Paarka - Swarnalatha, Shahul Hameed, Manorama

Dr r .Drio Na Drio Drio... Thus
goes the ever chirpy and every witty Manorama, the senior most Comedienne of
Southern Cinema. Thanks to ARR a million times...for having used her voice.

world for me...:)

GV Prakash, with his very

ARR to sing. first time I heard it I was so excited and was like dancing.
close 2nd is Kelamal, so sweet and rocking song. though the beats remind me
those songs from 80 era (especially Modern Talking's songs). there is not
much going on in the song, much of an electronic song but still ARR made it
a winner all the way. the female singer's voice is so fresh and soothing,
like Shreya Ghoshal's. I must say her voice is a big highlight of the song.
another good thing is the picturization. kudos to the choreographer
especially for designing simple but very suitable dance steps. watching the
video made me realize how easy it is to dance on this song. you don't need
to be a dancer for that! my third favorite is Ponmagal Vandaal. it has a
very catchy tune, something different from the maestro. then come the Nee
Marilyn Monroe, then Valayapatti, and at the end Maduraikku Pogathedee.

Recently Rahman did the score for my short film that I did for Swarovsky,

i am wondering what does it mean by a short film? does it mean it is not a

beautiful song and an aria in French. I ask people to guess where it is from,
and they search for all the great composers of the western classical form.
And are stunned when I tell them the piece was composed by A R Rahman, sung
by an Indian girl from his Music Academy, and produced in his studio in
Chennai. That is the genius of A R Rahman. Then why do we need the West to
tell us how great he is ?

Once a person’s genius has been discovered, it’s hard to stop the world from
wanting to know more about him and be inspired! The genius we are talking
about is Oscar winner A.R. Rahman. Ever since he received those two
shimmering awards and gave such a humble yet touching speech on receiving
the awards, the world cannot get enough of the man.

On 20th May, CNN’s Anjali Rao will visit maestro A.R. Rahman at his home in
Chennai for an exclusive interview, for a flashback into his musical journey
that led to the Oscars. ARR will also take viewers for a visit to his Music
Conservatory and talk about his dreams for the institute. Of course, he will
share some of his fave melodies and give updates on his upcoming projects.
So don't miss this great telecast!

[arr] some questions about ARR's Tamil songs

2009-05-17 Thread Jahanzeb Farooq
i have recently started listening ARR's Tamil albums (I don't understand Tamil
therefore used to listen only his Hindi albums). i have a few questions about
some songs, would be grateful if someone could answer. i know this all would
have been discussed here when the albums released but i missed since i used to
skip messages about Tamil albums.

1. Thigu Thigu (Ah Aah)
the song starts with music piece in background (first 42 seconds) and then
suddenly bursts into full song. my question is about this music piece. is this
part of the original song (i.e., composed by ARR?) or it is some old song
integrated here. the old style instrument (don't know what it is called) used
made me believe it is some old song. also the instrument is played so
beautifully especially those 5 seconds between 0:15 to 0:20. that i wonder why
ARR did not use it in the rest of the song.

2. Karisal Tharisil (Tajmahal)
first times when i listened this song i did not notice that it is a single
song. there are a number of different melodies or songs merged into one song.
is this a medley song?

3. Vidai Kodu (Kannathil Muthamittal)
oh man, what a stunning song. what a composition, this song alone deserves a
bunch of oscars. only ARR can do such a composition. i am totally blown away.
for me this is the BEST song of all his Tamil discography. now only one
question, please someone tell me what is this song about (the theme of song).
if someone could come up with translation that would be really great.

4. Ada Mondru Ezhuthu (Paarthale Paravasam)
the first time i listened this song i was like oh this cannot be by ARR. the
song is great and my favorite too, the thing which made me think so was the
sitar (or guitar or whatever) the instrument the song starts with (00:13-0:30
and then 0:42-0:53). similar pieces i have heard in lot of songs from B-grade
composers in Bollywood. very rarely i heard similar piece/instrument in ARR's
songs. though the way the same instrument is played in first interlude
(1:36-2:09) made me think only ARR can make it played so beautifully. anyways
just for clarification question is, is this song an original by ARR or some
recreated or remix song (e.g. like i just learned about Ponmagal Vandaal from
ATM)

this is all for now. i may come with more as i am still not done with some
albums.

[arr] ‘American’ score... done in my way, of co urse.”

2009-05-17 Thread Sreekrishnan R
A R
Rahman has finally said yes to Hollywood!

The music maestro,
who’s been wooed by the West ever since Jai Ho had the world on its feet,
has signed a Hollywood romantic comedy called Couples Retreat that’s being
directed by Peter Billingsley and which features Kristen Bell, Vince Vaughn and
Jason Bateman.

Rahman, who is known to fob off lucrative temptation
if his heart and art are not in it, has done British productions in the past.
These include the stage versions of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Bombay Dreams in
2002 which took Bollywood music to the West, and The Lord Of The Rings.

He also did films like Shekhar Kapoor’s Elizabeth and its
sequel followed by Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire.

Couples
Retreat requires Rahman to do his first full-fledged western score. “It
doesn’t have any Oriental or Indian touches. So, sorry, no Jai Ho this
time for global listeners who are looking for a similar musical experience from
me. Everywhere I go I am greeted by those two words. Thanks to Gulzar saab for
creating such a globally popular catch phrase. But now I do want to move on.

This will completely be an ‘American’ score... done in
my way, of course.”
What’s different about this film from all
the others Hollywood offered to him, Rahman said, was the subject. “I
wanted to do something fluffy and light-toned. I wanted it to be contemporary.
Even Elizabeth took me back to the 15th century,” said the composer for
whom Indian cinema has repeatedly thrown somber and complex musical challenges
including perplexing period dramas like Lagaan and Rang De Basanti.

Re: [arr] some questions about ARR's Tamil songs

2009-05-17 Thread Srini Santhanam
I will answer the 3rd question because its such a lovely song which is
close to my heart for the music, the lyrics and rendition by MSV. The
song is about the Srilankan tamils leaving their hometown (Mangulam
town in the movie) because of Army raid and it explains the plight of
their journey amid the bomb shelling and air raids.

Here's my attempt on the translation:

Give us farewell, our land
The homes where the ocean beats down to the doorstep
Palm tree forests, birds nest.
Will we ever get to see you again?
We buried the smiles in our lips
We buried our lives within our bodies
We embark on a journey just as skeletons.

Even if its in tatters, will there be a comfort like a mother(land)'s
lap.

Even if you went to heaven, will you get the freedom of your home town.
Here's the nation where we opened our eyes.
Where will be the place when we close our eyes.
We part with you.. Rivers.. we will return if we survive..
We will return is our motherland calls us back.
Oh land that was born behind a curtain of tears.
We see you one last time

We lost our music to the cries of the infants.
We buried our land when the sun went down
At dusk we were on the flowers
At night we were torn by the thorns
Ocean waters, birds - we will meet you if we are alive
Sky and Mountains - we will meet you if we are alive
We are going away with little burdens in the head and more in the
heart..

___

Personally my favorite in the movie would be Vellai Pookal which prays
for Peace in Srilanka and all over the world.. Let the song come true
very soon.

What a marvel by Rahman and the guitars.. awesome

Cheers,
Srini

[arr] ARR @ Kandhasamy Audio Launch!

2009-05-17 Thread Aravind AM
Hi all,

The audio launch of big budget tamil movie Kandhasamy, starring Vikram,
happened today in Chennai. ARR was the special guest. He was asked to unveil
the Marriage Hall owned by producer Kalaippuli Thaanu, which is to be donated
to the people of a village.

Here's the small clip.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TwMRc6IpIhw

ARR was there for only a few minutes. The event was very poorly organised, and
there was utter chaos. The stage was filled with so many people. ARR unveiled
the plaque and left before the actual audio launch function. Other celebrities,
like Vikram, were invited to the stage only after ARR left!

Yup possibly a rumor or very well be 'a big surprise' that Rahman was talking
about (in his recent interview)

A R Rahman for a Bond film? IndiaGlitz [Saturday, May 16, 2009]

Luck follows success and success follows hardwork. After the success of
Slumdog millionaire and marathon of awards at Oscar Ceremony, AR Rahman has
reached new heights of his career.

The latest talk is that Rahman is all set to compose his magical Tunes for
the next Bond film. This would be 23rd James Bond film which will be
produced by Barbara Broccoli and co producer is McDougal who earlier
produced a successful movie `Beach' jointly with Danny Boyle.

Danny Boyle is the key person who values the talent of AR Rahman and is
said to have attached him into this opportunity. Good Luck Rahman we expect
the same wonders in music again.

for me this movie came out of no where. anyways trailer looks promising.
the music is very hollywoodish. i could not have guessed that it is our
man had not i already known it.

Recently Rahman did the score for my short film that I did for Swarovsky,
 called Paasage.

i am wondering what does it mean by a short film? does it mean it is not
a regular film and instead something like smile pinky? anyone?

Recently Rahman did the score for my short film that I did for Swarovsky,
called Paasage. The one I shot in Argentina. One of the pieces in it is a
beautiful song and an aria in French. I ask people to guess where it is
from, and they search for all the great composers of the western classical
form. And are stunned when I tell them the piece was composed by A R Rahman,
sung by an Indian girl from his Music Academy, and produced in his studio in
Chennai. That is the genius of A R Rahman. Then why do we need the West to
tell us how great he is ?

By the way, I think the photo credits for the back cover may not be correct. If
I am not wrong it is copyright of AFP/Getty. Hope they don't get into a legal
tangle on this one.

Rgds.

Some comments since this isn't the final cover-

Fix the lousy Photoshop work for the image on the right (front-flap). The
photo outline does not blend well with the gray background and you can see
the originally white portions of the background at the top of ARR's head.

But it's been more than a year
since I first cribbed about ALL CAPS in the website. Consider this yet
  another reminder.

  On a lesser note...
Front flap: Why is 'discovery' enclosed in quotes?
