But he didn’t take much time to get nostalgic. * “Chennai is not new to me. I have literally lived here for the last five years. I came here to meet AR Rahman to discuss music for my films. I was also present in the city when Rang De Basanti (RDB) and Delhi-6 were screened,” he says. Rakeysh is upbeat about the city’s Mozart. “I have worked with AR Rahman in two of my films and I feel at home with him.. After he won the Oscars, we talked for half an hour! I also met him as soon as he returned to the country. I heard that a huge crowd gathered at the airport to receive him. Guess I missed that scene,” he chuckles. He is equally effusive about our Ulaga Nayagan, “I saw Dashavathar with Kamal Haasan. He has the most expressive face,” but adds, “I was disappointed I couldn’t see ‘actor’ Kamal in it.” His recent movie, Delhi-6, received a mixed response at the box office. And, Rakeysh accepts that with a smile. “I’m both happy and heart broken with the results of Delhi-6. Certain aspects of the story worked well. The songs have almost become anthems. But, I wasn’t able to tell what was running on my mind and transcribe the thoughts on to the screen. Well, it’s all a part of life. I’m a story teller. There is no excitement in telling the same story again and again. A filmmaker learns the most while he’s making a film. After making RDB and Delhi-6, I have gained more knowledge. I discovered why I make a film,” he says. Though his movies are commercial (read song and dance) in nature, Rakeysh is tired of them. “It will look idiotic if a cop bursts into a song in between the story. So, I weaved songs with the script in RDB and Delhi-6. But, I don’t get the point of having intervals. I was forced to have an interval in my films for economic reasons. I don’t think attention spans are decreasing, at least, not in the entertainment business,” he says. Rakeysh believes that the market will expand only if a filmmaker tries out new things. “Audiences are humans. It’s ok to make them feel uncomfortable because their sensitivity will make us experiment. Unless we give them things on a new platter, they won’t know which they like the most,” he says. Rakeysh reveals that he is currently working on a few scripts. “My next film, Paanch Kaurav, will be an adventure film, based on mythology. The film will be set 100 years ago and I’m sure it will be better than Lord of the Rings or any other film in that genre. It will be a fantastical film,” he says. And, it doesn’t stop with that. “I’m writing the script for Bhairavi,” he says and adds that he plans to make a film on the romance between Mirza and Sahibaan, which is likely to have his Delhi-6 pair, Abhishek Bachchan and Sonam Kapoor, in the lead. But he’s more excited about producing films for young directors. “I’m planning to produce movies with young talents. My first movie will go on the floors this September,” he says and adds, “I want to work with newcomers. You never thought you would get a captain from Ranchi!” Rakeysh is also quite clear about his formula for making his films. “When I make movies, it’s more like a personal experience. It has to challenge me, excite me. Slumdog Millionaire is one of my favourite. How do we expand our cinema? That’s the challenge Slumdog... throws at us. If I can achieve that, I’m a perfect filmmaker. After all, I have just arrived,” he signs off. * http://timesofindia .indiatimes. com/Boll ywood/I-dont- get-the-point- of-intervals/ articleshow/ 4624981.cmshttp://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Bollywood/I-dont-get-the-point-of-intervals/articleshow/4624981.cms * Krish.. Rahman was Sunday conferred an honorary doctorate by the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) at its 59th convocation. The composer, who said he was overwhelmed with the honour, urged more young people to join creative fields like arts and media. 'In a world of mass killings, terrorism and violence, we need positive emotions,' said Rahman. Rahman also urged the youth to learn and join him in building a strong, harmonious India. 'I find a transcendent language that all can understand that can bring all together -- a language that awakens in each of us an awareness that all energy is spiritual energy and the fate of one is linked to the fate of all,' said Rahman. Quoting Nelson Mandela, he said: 'Education shall be directed to the full development of the human personality and strengthening of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. Education alone can eradicate poverty.' Rahman ended his speech with 'Jai Ho', the song for which he got an Oscar. Along with Rahman, eminent Urdu writer Gopi Chand Narang also received an honorary doctorate. Talking about Urdu's status among Indian languages he said it was as high and as exclusive as the Taj Mahal among buildings. 'Urdu is a language of plurality and openness. I denounce all kinds of totalitarianism and regimentation. 'To me Urdu is a way of life representing more than a thousand years of composite culture drawing sustenance from Amir Khusrau, Nanak, Nizammuddin and the contributions of Ghalib, Mir, Iqbal, Faiz, Firaq and Prem Chand,' he said. Re: [arr] Subhash is pleased with music-director's, AR Rahman, emergence as an international artist
I really don't understand the whole negative vibes that seems to have possessed some Indians with regards to Slumdog Millionaire. First it was Amitabh and few other senior artists who claim that SDM is potraying India in a bad light. Then there was the news about case being filed against ARR and Anil Kapoor for associating with a film like SDM, and now Subash Ghai who claims SDM was a success merely because the West is intrigued by how a poor Indian can make it big in life.. Just out of curiosity...what do you think would have happen had the movie not become a success? Would these same people have even spared a minute on these topic? I guess not. On the other hand, the Indian audience is more interested in song and dance and stories with longevity and relevance. Reading this quote, I can't help but ask...when did Ghai, an Indian director, potray a movie with a story of longevity and relevance? Majority of his films show the NRIs as arrogant and evil...if you watch his film, you'll know what I'm talking about. His Pardes is all about cruel, arrogant (future) in-laws, who don't smile, speak in fake accent, smoke cigars, wear thick mascara and have a free lifestyle. The same characters are potrayed in Taal and Yaadein. So can the NRIs now file a case against Subash Ghai for consistently potraying them in such a manner? Slumdog is a simple story of a boy from the Mumbai slum who made it big in life. If anything, it's an inspiring film which proves that anyone can make it big in life if they just take the extra effort to do so.. And about Ghai saying that ARR has given a better work than Jai Ho, well yes, it's true. In fact, ARR has given better work for Ghai himself in Taal and Yuvaraj but did Ghai do justice to the songs? In fact, if I'm right, Jai Ho was first composed for Yuvaraaj but Ghai rejected the song which resulted in ARR replacing it with Shano Shano . But Jai Ho emerged to become almost like a world anthem today and Shano Shano...well what do I say? --- On Wed, 6/3/09, Vithur vith...@gmail.com wrote: From: Vithur vith...@gmail.com Subject: [arr] Subhash is pleased with music-director's, AR Rahman, emergence as an international artist To: arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com Date: Wednesday, June 3, 2009, 11:18 PM Subhash Ghai vs. Danny Boyle June 03 2009 14:15 PST By Aryanna Garber It seems that the international success of the film is not making everyone happy. In fact, Subhash Ghai, an Indian film-maker, is quite perturbed by the film's achievements. In recent reports Ghai has said, 'Slumdog Millionaire was a film made by a westerner, who had a plot and hired a few local actors for it. We cannot claim it to be an Indian film. The director seems to believe that the film's failure lies in the cultural discrepancies between the east and west. He claims that Westerners are interested to learn about other countries, while Indians want to see themselves in films. The international success of Slumdog Millionaire can be attributed to the fact that the international audience is intrigued by how a poor boy from the slums can be such a success. It is the curiosity in the other. On the other hand, the Indian audience is more interested in song and dance and stories with longevity and relevance. On the positive side, Subhash is pleased with music-director's, AR Rahman, emergence as an international artist. While Ghai thinks the Oscar-winning song, Jai Ho, is not Rahman's best work, he is pleased with its success. Rahman himself acknowledges he has given better music than `Slumdog Millionaire` , said Ghai. Let us know what you think about Subhash Ghai's negative feelings? Do you agree with the xenophobic opinion of the film, or do you think that the film was a good launch of Indian cinema onto the international screen? http://www.desihits .com/blog/ article/subhash- ghai-vs-danny- boyle-20090603 -- regards, Vithur

[arr] James Asher's Trip to AR's Studio..
Visiting AR Rahman at his studio in Chennai Whilst in Chennai, I was lucky enough to meet up with AR Rahman - the winner of the recent oscar for Slumdog Millionaire. He invited me to visit his studio, which is a large, impressive and obviously highly capable facility. We chatted about Slumdog, and I mentioned reading that he appreciated the fact that Danny Boyle has a genuine affection for India, which he confirmed. AR exudes a warmth and gentle quality, which is most engaging, and for all his success, which is clearly now huge, he remains humble, grounded and affable. He invited me to give a talk to the music conservatory that is run with his support - the KM Music Conservatory - to talk about what I do in my field of music and how I go about it. This was clearly an honour, which I appreciated. The next day I gave the talk to about 30 students, and played excerpts from my albums and explained how they came into being. To: arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com Date: Sunday, June 7, 2009, 7:20 PM I want to express my sincere congrats to all in this group who contribute so much to society in India and globally and who are so active in organizing events, attending concerts, meetings, etc. As someone far off in the US, I can only watch with amazement and be a bit envious as I'm not able to join you all in India to participate in these meetings and activities that are so meaningful and charitable. Really enjoyed seeing the photo and reading the writeup in the Indian Express, highlighting several key members of our group such as Gopal, Swapnil, Amith, Vithur, etc. etc. You guys are amazing and doing such a great job representing the true spirit of Rahman, his visions and his music. Rahman himself recognizes your contributions and is very proud of you all I'm sure. The fact that you received an exclusive writeup all your own in a popular newspaper says volumes. Hope this group continues to grow and thrive and become even greater and better recognized in the years to come.

Re: [arr] Rakeysh Omprakash Mehraâs next : Paanch Kaurav
I am sure it will be better than Lord of the Rings or any other film in that genre. Is He Gone Crazy ?? I Firmly Believe After Delhi-6 Making Films Like LOTR Or Even Better Than It, Is Quite Impossible For Him ... If Mr. A.R.Rahman's Music Wasnt There IN Delli6 , Then Therz Nothing In The Film To Watch :S Though I Liked RDB A Lot Inspite Of The Fact That It Was A tricky Copied Film From Oscar nominated Jesus Of Montreal-1989 Anyway Best Of Luck ROM
