[arr] If one A R Rahman has made us proud on the international arena there are hundreds like that, Mahesh Bhatt
*Bollywood not sole representative of Indian cinema: Mahesh Bhatt* Dubai (PTI): Bollywood cannot be the sole representative of Indian cinema as regional film industries in the country have equal amount of quality and talent, veteran producer-director Mahesh Bhatt has said. The arrogance of Bollywood to be representative of Indian cinema is bogus, Bhatt said citing his conversations with legendary south Indian actor Sivaji Ganesan. He (Ganesan) once asked me why isn't there the image of a South Indian star occupying as much space? This was a few years ago but that lament is valid, he recalled. If one A R Rahman has made us proud on the international arena there are hundreds like that, he added. In an interview to PTI, Bhatt, who is in Dubai with his daughter Pooja Bhatt for the shooting of 'Kajra Re', said the popular idiom of Hindi cinema has finally found takers all over the world and there has also been a shift in the gaze of the government towards cinema. It is seen as soft power and cultural asset and is also a political tool which has had tremendous impact in the neighbourhood such as Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and even in African countries, he said. However, he also admitted that the Indian cinema is now on its knees in terms of content because it is catering to the lowest common denominator of the affluent. http://www.hindu.com/thehindu/holnus/009200907012240.htm -- regards, Vithur

Why never mind the lyrics. I think Gulzar rocks in Kaminey. He is in full form. Sample this: Ishq mein jalthe hue, saans tezaabi lage, raaz khulthaa hi nahi, koi tho chaabi lage... Gulzar is amazing. And Kudos to Vishal. Brilliant Album. I am still waiting for a collaboration between ARR and Vishal, given the mutual admiration they have for each other. I am so sure that if Vishal requests ARR to sing, ARR would definitely agree. Same applies vice-versa. It could be a choreographer’s nightmare or a challenge—but India’s ubiquitous sawari continues to chug in and chug out of the Bollywood factory with aplomb and chutzpah. From the 1954 release Jagriti’s ‘Aao bachchon tumhe dikhayen’ written by Bharat Ratna awardee Pradeep, to Anand Bakshi’s philosophical lyrics in ‘Gadi bula rahi hai’ in the 1974 film, Dost, to the unforgettable ‘Mere sapnon ki rani’ from Aradhana to the more recent AR Rahman’s Oscar crescendo, ‘Jai ho’ from Slumdog Millionaire, trains and Hindi music have been inseparable. “Bakshiji’s lyrics have a fantastic connection with life. It’s really about leaving people behind and meeting new people. At the end of it, the journey just continues,” says an emotional Dharmendra when queried about the song from Dost. It was shot in Simla over three days. “The song gave me a chance to reflect on the past. A lot of events close to my heart came to the fore,” adds the actor. The juice of creativity The allegory of a journey — life, a blooming romance or just the wheels of history (as in Jagriti) — is irresistible for a lyricist. Some, like Shailendra, effortlessly combined a situation with humour, which lyrically found its way into the 1960 Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman starrer, Kala Bazaar. The song was ‘Apni toh har aah hi ek toofan hai, uparwala jaan kar anjaan hae’, which scriptwriter and lyricist Jaideep Sahni of Chak De fame recalls rather fondly. “These were lyricists who knew what they were doing,” says Sahni. Take a look at this. “The obvious meaning is Dev Anand singing to the gods but the twist in the line, ‘Uparwala jaan ke anjaan hae’, brings a smile to the viewer when he sees Waheeda Rehman being aware of the actor’s message to her. After all, she is on the upper berth of the train,” he says with a laugh. Other songs that he recalls are the poignant ‘Wardhi hai Bhagwan, fauji mera naam’ from Fauji and the qawaali from Ravi Chopra’s The Burning Train. Gulzar’s lines for ‘Dhadak, dhadak’ from Bunty aur Babli is about a train though the word is never mentioned, says Sahni with admiration. The song and beyond.. Many songs with trains as the backdrop or focus have done remarkably well. Interestingly, the success of the music was not exactly planned in advance. Slumdog Millionaire, the film that put India on the Oscar map, is one such instance. T-Series president (marketing) Vinod Bhanushali has acquired films with AR Rahman’s music over the past two years and Slumdog Millionaire was a given. Trade reports were pretty lukewarm on ‘Jai ho’ though Bhanushali knew he had a winner on his hands when he heard the number. “There is an Indianess to ‘Jai ho’. It is a term which most Indians greet each other with. It was catchy, what followed was history,” says Bhanushali who is said to have bought the music rights to the film for less than Rs 1 crore. For choreographer Longinus Fernandez, who recently won the Astaire award for ‘Jai ho’, shooting the song at Mumbai’s iconic CST station was a dream [image: 2.jpg]http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/Features/Business-of-Bollywood/Indian-cinema-60-000-km-railway-network/articleshow/4735862.cms?curpg=2# javascript:openslideshow('/slideshow/4735876.cms') *Kambakkht Ishq: Movie Review *http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/articleshow/4732452.cms come true. “Platforms 3 and 4 were the location and three days were all we had. Shooting was allowed only between midnight and half past four in the morning, the period between Mumbai’s last local train out and the first in the morning. The cooperation from the railways was hugely helpful. I had a tight brief from Danny Boyle who said this was the film’s climax. I had around 3,000 people who had to look like daily commuters, and the dance had to be combined with the celebration of the hero having won the contest and found his love. For their part, the railways had everything in place — security, restrooms apart from the train drivers being there well after their working hours,” says Fernandez. Like

And now, Mani is raring to go. He is ready to complete Raavan and move on to his next project, which would apparently have Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, yet again. There is also another project with Ranbir Kapoor to be shot in London. And, Mani wants to make both the films within the next one year. Close friend Santosh Sivan, who recently shot a schedule for Raavan, says, “Mani is very, very well now. He has never been fitter. He plays three hours of golf every day.” Raavan, being made as a Tamil-Hindi bi-lingual, has been more strenuous to shoot than all other films because it’s not only being shot in the rugged jungles, but also moves in two separate time zones, being shot by two different cameramen. Now, Mani is balancing out his work and recreation time. No more workaholic schedules for him. A little-known fact about Mani’s life is his love for golf (the game was included in Guru) and his bonding with Madhavan over games of golf. Madhavan, who has played golf tournaments at the national level, is often seen in the golf course with Mani these days. Though his status as Mani’s favourite actor has changed, Madhavan and Mani continue to be friends in real life. In fact, Madhavan will be playing a stellar role in one of the two Hindi films that Mani will direct next year. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Regional-Stars/Mani-Ratnam-is-fit-and-fresh/articleshow/4748857.cms -- regards, Vithur

[arr] 19th STEP Shelved?
Kamal Hasan fails to take 1st step with Asin Kamal Hasan has apparently pulled out of the big-budget Walt Disney production. Asin's prestigious Indo-Japanese project 'The 19th Step' is apparently shelved leaving Asin with tons of time that she had set aside not only to learn and practice the ancient art of Kalaripayattu but also to shoot for the film in Japan and Kerala. According to sources the project has fallen through for no fault of Asin's. Says the source, The film's producers Walt Disney and leading man Kamal Haasan have had a serious disagreement. He isn't doing the film. And if Kamal Haasan isn't doing the film, neither is Asin. She agreed to do a Tamil film at this juncture when her Hindi career has taken off, only because of Kamal Haasan whom Asin respects a lot. At the time of writing this The 19th Step seems as good as shelved. And Asin, inundated with offers is work-less! Unless she quickly accepts another project to fill the empty date diary. Says a source close to the actress, Asin is upset with the way the whole Indo-Japanese project was managed. After Vipul Shah's London Dreams, she said no to everything in Mumbai including Priyadarshan's De Dana Dan and Farhan Akhtar's Kartik Calling Kartik for 19th Step which Kamal Haasan whom she respects immensely her, requested her to. Incidentally, the number of projects with A R Rahman's music to be shelved or cancelled have just gone a 'step' ahead with 19th Step. Mani Ratnam's Lajjo and Kamal Haasan's Marmyogi were also shelved recently. And earlier Bharat Bala who was to direct 19th Step was supposed to do Taj Mahal with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as Mumtaz Mahal with Rahman's music. That too got shelved. http://movies.indiainfo.com/article/0907081406_asins_indo-japanese_project_falls_through/393143.html

[arr] AR Rahman received Honorary Doctorate from Middlesex University [2 Attachments]
*[Attachment(s) from Gopal Srinivasan included below] Middlesex University honours India’s brightest musical star– AR Rahman 8 July, 2009 A visit from an Indian superstar brought Middlesex University and its students to a standstill yesterday. AR Rahman is an Indian composer, record producer, musician and singer and is probably best known as the winner of two Academy Awards for the music he wrote for the smash hit film Slumdog Millionaire. His visit to Middlesex University in Hendon, London had two purposes. Along with Middlesex’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Michael Driscoll, he signed a Memorandum of Understanding between his KM Music Conservatory in Chennai, India and the University. AR, as he is known, was also awarded an Honorary Degree, making him a Doctor of Middlesex University, the highest honour the University can bestow. Middlesex is an extremely popular British university throughoutIndia and hundreds of Indian students come to study on its London campuses. When the word got out that their musical hero, AR Rahman, was coming to receive his honorary degree, excitement started to mount. When he arrived on campus, there were scenes reminiscent of Beatlemania; women screamed and men mobbed him for an autograph or just a glance in their direction! In his speech to the University’s academics and students, AR Rahman thanked the University and said: “It is an enormous honour to belong to this great seat of learning. My journey as a musician started at the age of nine and I see music as a way to connect to spirituality and embrace it. Music touches people and breaks down barriers, creating harmony in troubled times. This has always been my philosophy”. The Memorandum of Understanding between AR Rahman’s KM Music Conservatory and Middlesex University focuses on educational collaboration between India and the UK. The two organisations have agreed to explore the possibilities for collaboration in music and education and to support one of AR Rahman’s ‘pet projects’, that of the blending of Asian and Western musical styles. Dr Terry Butland is Deputy Vice-Chancellor International at Middlesex University. He commented on the Memorandum of Understanding: “I can’t think of a more suitable and well placed partner for the University than AR Rahman. We are delighted to sign this Memorandum of Understanding which paves the way for what will undoubtedly be some interesting and innovative projects delivered jointly between Middlesex University and the KM Music Conservatory”. AR Rahman explained the background to the Memorandum of Understanding: “We looked at lots of universities but felt Middlesex had the right, friendly, vibe as well as its great history” During his visit to Middlesex University, AR Rahman revealed the current projects heis working on. He is scoring a comedy film and also writing and performing on a pop album, working with a well known hip hop label, Inderscope. His KM Music Conservatory has only been open a year, but already has 200 students. When asked about what he considers to be his biggest achievement, AR says it is infilm music. “As a human being I have so many interests. The Academy Awards [forSlumdog Millionaire] opened doors worldwide and legitimised Indian musicians” Description for the photographs - (1) AR Rahman receiving his honorary degree from Middlesex University’s Chancellor, The Rt Hon Lord Sheppard of Didgemere; (2) AR Rahman with Middlesex University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Michael Driscoll Courtesy of Ashanti Omkar and Middlesex University *Attachment(s) from Gopal Srinivasan: * 2 of 2 Photo(s) http://groups.yahoo.com/group/arrahmanfans/attachments/folder/957469814/item/list * AR Rahman receiving hon degree.JPG * AR Rahman with Vice-Chancellor.JPG Are you searching for a reason, to be kind? b Explore, Experience, Enjoy A.R.Rahman - The Man, The Music, The Magic. Re: [arr] AR Rahman received Honorary Doctorate from Middlesex University
amazing. really amazing. glad to know that ARR attended the function. ARR deserves this and many more. thanx for this exclusive share and pics. On Wed, Jul 8, 2009 at 8:41 AM, Gopal Srinivasan catchg...@gmail.comwrote: Middlesex University honours India’s brightest musical star– AR Rahman 8 July, 2009 A visit from an Indian superstar brought Middlesex University and its students to a standstill yesterday. The Academy Awards [forSlumdog Millionaire] opened doors worldwide and legitimised Indian musicians” Description for the photographs - (1) AR Rahman receiving his honorary degree from Middlesex University’s Chancellor, The Rt Hon Lord Sheppard of Didgemere; (2) AR Rahman with Middlesex University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Michael Driscoll Courtesy of Ashanti Omkar and Middlesex University Are you searching for a reason, to be kind? b Explore, Experience, Enjoy A.R.Rahman - The Man, The Music, The Magic. Re: [arr] A R Rahman is the Best : Anu Malik
In 1994 when HUMSE HAI MUQABLA became a SUPERHIT, ANU MALIK said ...I LIKE RAHMAN, BUT I DONT LIEK HIS MUSIC!! Some years later he said Rahman's music taught me to arrange my songs myself. and NOW He says RAHMAN is the BEST!! He said that in 1994 coz, he din want Rahman in hidni since he would lose his market. But now he knows, there is ABSOLUTELY no competition for RAHMAN
