I cannot believe we are still beating at this.

You should listen to the the song titled Ulagam Ippo written, composed
and sung by IR from the new album Azhagar Malai. IR's jealousy comes out
clearly in that. The song lyrics talks about how people leave the country
for money and that those people, though they may be rich, are mean and poor
in his view point! The lyrics further goes that world may change, people may
go wherever, but I'll stay here and serve the country.

The song lyrics are by Vaali. It seems appropriate for the movie ('Azhagar
 Malai http://popcorn.oneindia.in/movie-synopsis/2847/azhagar-malai.htmlis
about the egoistic and irate village heads and a youngster trying to
 change their attitude').

It takes a creative mind to extrapolate this into inferring that IR is
taking a dig at ARR. Anyone doing so is conveniently
 forgettinghttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confirmation_biasthat IR has also
gone abroad and worked/performed (his 1st Symphony
conducted by John Scott (London?), the concert in Italy, the Thiruvasagam
 symphony/oratorio in Budapest...)

I can't read Tamil so I have no idea what the Kumudam article that Aravind
attached says. Pay attention to the context and the conclusion drawn. Don't
fall for the trap laid out by junk media.

The second comment about fame and God's gift is a matter of philosophy.
ARR believes in one thing and IR in another. So what? It's just like how no
two astrologers will ever agree on the same thing.

And why should it matter if a music artist is an egoist? Shouldn't you
bother only about the music? ARR is one of a kind-- we like him for his
music and also his humility and the personal example he sets for others. It
is wrong to expect that every artist will be equally humble and kind. I'll
say that it's quite common that a lot of great artists have big egos. That's
part of what pushes them to excel.

[arr] Re: Rank the ARR-Shankar combo

2009-08-16 Thread rayrai2k
I beg to differ. The combos cannot be compared at all.
AR- Mani has more drive for classics and is different than any other, somewhat
close is AR-Ashutosh, AR-Shyam Benegal. And it is in AR's work in mani where i
felt the BGMs are superb where mani drives the movie with his scenes and AR
drives the scenes through the music. There is an undeniable scope for
expressive BGMs in Mani's movies like Alaipayuthey, Roja, Bomaby (undeniable
any time), Dilse.. Watching Mani's movie is like being in a class where you are
made to feel the genius of every department in film making. Needless to say the
legendary Cinematographers got the right praise when worked with him.
where as AR-Shankar is known for peppy, fast beat. Similar combo like them are
AR-Kathir. His BGMs requires josh factor.
I cannot agree songs arent piturised well in Mani's movies either. Though he
uses computer to the least but the songs are practical done with perfection.
It also has to be agreed that Mani doesn't spend much for a song. Songs form an
integral part in Mani's movies. However thoughts can differ among ppl but I
dont feel it wise to compare and rate the combos either.

A quick bite AR-Mani, AR bagged 2 national awards among the 4 he won. And it
was Chaiya Chaiya that became a stepping stone for AR to get recognized in the
western shores.

My words only meant to say, pls dont compare combos and rate the pair.Bs doning
such we may knowingly or unknowingly disrespect the genius who think, work to
entertain us.

 *The Week on Rahman :*

We like to believe that Indians have made a fantastic breakthrough in
international cinema, thanks to publicity generated by *Slumdog
Millionaire,* which is not an Indian film to begin with. But what it has
done is gift A.R Rahman's genius to the world.

This modest musician has awaited a long time for universal recognition. It
is now his - Rahman is in a league of his own with no real competition,
either here or overseas. He is a genuine, gilt-edged ' valuable ' -
 self-made and supreme

 -
 *A.R Rahman*
 *One with Music*
 *By Prasoon Joshi*
 *
 *
There are certain things in this world that cannot be defined by logic. One
of them is God, another is music. A.R Rahman touches that chord and ventures
into the zone of the undefined. As a person, he visits this transcendental
world everytime he immerses himself in God or music, very often both.

In this transcendental world, where others go to escape, Rahman is so
comfortable that he is almost at home there. But the magic of Rahman is more
than this comfort level at such an undefined plane. His real magic is his
ability to transport his listeners to that realm that defies logic.

Rahman does not believe in boxing himself by defining his work as
'commerical' or 'devotional' or 'pure are' or anyother format. He immerses
himself completely in his art and commercial success he gets is not the
objective of his excercise. It is a byproduct.

Rahman is a rare human being who is so attuned to his craft that to
separate one from the other would be to distort the whole. That is why, very
often, when someone asks him to tinker with a composition, he simply puts
aside the original and creates a fresh one.

There are many reasons why Rahman is one of the country's most valuable
persons, and luck doesn't happen to be one of them. Rahman is defined by his
hard work. He has been practising his craft since childhood and he is a
master. But he is constantly evolving, which brings about the freshness and
uniqueness in his work. There is never any stagnation or repetition. Yet
each work is so quintessentially Rahman.

Rahman's music is rooted in Indian tradition, but he is very much
influenced by world music. That, perhaps, explains his universal appeal
among the young and the old. Old-timers connect with the warmth of
traditional music in his work, the younger ones with his experimentation.
Yet, Rahman tries not to shock his listeners. He makes his music easy to
appreciate because there is a touch of the familiar in it, in which the
listener finds a comfort zone even as her experiences some new sounds in
 same composition.

A musical journey with Rahman is an adventurous one, but one which ensures
a comfort level. He holds your hand and flies with you into an unknown
realm. He will never drop you into an ocean midway and expect you to swim
your way through. There is another important aspect to Rahman's work. He is
one of few musicians with an ear for not just melody, but also sound. His
music is richly layered with so many sounds that others may never have
 thought of as music.

He is such a fine sound technician and is so attuned to modern technology
that he can tell the sound engineer exactly what he wants. Yet, I would
never say that it is the technology wich defines his work or that Rahman is
a product of present times. Rahman would be the same even in another age.
Electronic gadgets may only have made the work a tad easier for him, but
Rahman without his sound system is as creative. He can actually click two
stones together and end up with a repertoire of musical sounds!

I reiterate, Rahman's appeal is universal. Because, work for him is worship
and success merely incidental. Rahman has never been affected by the
trappings of stardom. There's never an entourage around him. He is a simple
man, of simple habits. Much has been writted about his humility, but it is
indeed trie. HE is very down to earth and never takes himself seriously.

Many often wonder whether Rahman has reached the pinnacle of success. I
don't think so. Pinnacles are those who rise, he is free flowing, always
new, always refreshing. If I see him as he is today, post Oscar glory, I
only think he is raring to go and come up with more surprises. When asked
whether he is overworked, I've heard him say things like, Why should I
take a break from what I love? or I don't need to unwind because I never
get wound up. There's a child-like enthusiasm in him that is only going to
explore, and explore more. If you look at worldly achievements, they may be
finite, but his creativitiy is infinite. It is part of his very being.
Rahman and his music are one.

calls a saint should very well know this and understand, whether he believes
in it or not! Even if he doesn't believe in it, do you think he should have
spoken on stage the way he did?
Do you think it is a mature comment, coming from a veteran of the stature of
IR? It is totally unwarranted and uncalled for! This is the point I'm trying to
impress upon.

I cannot believe we are still beating at this.

You should listen to the the song titled Ulagam Ippo written, composed and
sung by IR from the new album Azhagar Malai. IR's jealousy comes out clearly in
that. The song lyrics talks about how people leave the country for money and
that those people, though they may be rich, are mean and poor in his view
point! The lyrics further goes that world may change, people may go wherever,
but I'll stay here and serve the country.

The song lyrics are by Vaali. It seems appropriate for the movie ('Azhagar
Malai is about the egoistic and irate village heads and a youngster trying to
change their attitude').

It takes a creative mind to extrapolate this into inferring that IR is taking
a dig at ARR. Anyone doing so is conveniently forgetting that IR has also gone
abroad and worked/performed (his 1st Symphony conducted by John Scott
(London?), the concert in Italy, the Thiruvasagam symphony/oratorio in
Budapest...)

I can't read Tamil so I have no idea what the Kumudam article that Aravind
attached says. Pay attention to the context and the conclusion drawn. Don't
fall for the trap laid out by junk media.

The second comment about fame and God's gift is a matter of philosophy. ARR
believes in one thing and IR in another. So what? It's just like how no two
astrologers will ever agree on the same thing.

And why should it matter if a music artist is an egoist? Shouldn't you bother
only about the music? ARR is one of a kind-- we like him for his music and also
his humility and the personal example he sets for others. It is wrong to expect
that every artist will be equally humble and

[arr] Rahman’s emotional tribue

2009-08-16 Thread Vithur
*Rahman’s emotional tribute*

*After the death of two of his revered icons – H Sridhar and Michael Jackson
– within months, AR Rahman is planning a concert in tribute to their memory.
*

Sridhar was a sound engineer, who died of cancer; and MJ was recently laid
to rest. Chennai’s musical maestro has been in and out of the country
working on the project that he is keeping under wraps. Due to his prior
commitments, the composer will, however, not be a part of the MJ tribute
ceremony being planned in Chennai by music director Praveen Mani.

At the time of MJ’s death, Rahman had talked about his meeting with the
global pop star at the Oscar ceremony in February. “MJ was concerned about
contemporary developmental issues such as global warming, wars and their
consequences. He asked me to compose a unity anthem on the lines of ‘We are
the world’ for him. I nodded in awe.”

Recently, there was also news that Rahman has planned a free concert in
Australia to address the issue of racial indiscrimination in the country.
This has been scheduled for January 10, 2010. Apart from this, his next big
international venture has him teaming up with Mick Jagger, Kylie Minogue,
Pussycat Dolls and Joss Stone for a new project he wants to produce.

Chennai
based guitarist Sanjeev Thomas

MUMBAI: A R Rahman's song Aditi.. may be on a perennial playlist of radio
stations and music channels, but Chennai based guitarist Sanjeev Thomas, who
has played on this chartbuster number and many others (also on forthcoming
'Blue'), is finding it hard to get investors for the video and an album he
plans to release under his brand Rainbow Bridge.

Through this self titled solo album, Thomas would also be promoting new
talent by including four songs of new bands and artistes, the selection for
which is underway. “Mostly, we'll be releasing the album under our own
label, unless I get a good deal from labels,” he says. The full length album
with ten tracks is expected to release by the October 2009.

Thomas says, We are looking for investors at this moment, but it's hard. We
are aiming for big - production, marketing and promotional costs have also
become much higher if one has to come up with a video, he adds.

Nevertheless, Thomas has gone ahead and self produced the video for song
'Free Will' and will release a promo video on 15 August. The video was
entirely shot at Kodaikanal on a shoestring budget of Rs 60,000 -70,000.
Rainbow Bridge is one of the sought after acts from Bangalore with singers
like Benny Dayal (Pappu Can't Dance Saala, Yuvvraaj fame) as one of the lead
singers.

Doesn't his strong profile of playing with Oscar winning composer Rahman
incite investors into the project? It's true I have a strong profile, but
there are few who know me outside the music circle, he quips. For the
uninitiated, Thomas was one among those nominated for British Council Young
Music Entrepreneur Award 2009, besides bagging the best guitarist prize at
Independence Rock finals last year.

 The Week on Rahman :
We like to believe that Indians have made a fantastic breakthrough in
international cinema, thanks to publicity generated by Slumdog
Millionaire, which is not an Indian film to begin with. But what it has done
is gift A.R Rahman's genius to the world.
This modest musician has awaited a long time for universal recognition. It is
now his  - Rahman is in a league of his own with no real competition, either
 here or overseas. He is a genuine, gilt-edged ' valuable '  - self-made and
 supreme
 -A.R RahmanOne with
 MusicBy Prasoon Joshi
Rahman is a rare human being who is so attuned to his craft that to separate
one from the other would be to distort the whole. That is why, very often,
when someone asks him to tinker with a composition, he simply puts aside the
original and creates a fresh one.
Yet each
 work is so quintessentially Rahman.
Rahman's music is rooted in Indian tradition, but he is very much influenced
by world music. That, perhaps, explains his universal appeal among the young
and the old. Old-timers connect with the warmth of traditional music in his
work, the younger ones with his experimentation. Yet, Rahman tries not to
shock his listeners. He makes his music easy to appreciate because there is a
touch of the familiar in it, in which the listener finds a comfort zone even
as her experiences some new sounds in same composition.
A musical journey with Rahman is an adventurous one, but one which ensures a
comfort level. He holds your hand and flies with you into an unknown realm.
He will never drop you into an ocean midway and expect you to swim your way
through. There is another important aspect to Rahman's work. He is one of few
musicians with an ear for not just melody, but also sound. His music is
richly layered with so many sounds that others may never have thought of as
 music.
He is such a fine sound technician and is so attuned to modern technology
that he can tell the sound engineer exactly what he wants. Yet, I would never
say that it is the technology wich defines his work or that Rahman is a
product of present times.
I don't
think so. Pinnacles are those who rise, he is free flowing, always new,
always refreshing. If I see him as he is today, post Oscar glory, I only
think he is raring to go and come up with more surprises. When asked whether
he is overworked, I've heard him say things like, Why should I take a break
from what I love? or I don't need to unwind because I never get wound up.
There's a child-like enthusiasm in him that is only going to explore, and
explore more. If you look at

As soon as everyone, and I mean EVERYONE finished hearing the song Mosquito

etc. Everyone asked me where to buy the CD, but I told them that the music
never released officially and I got the music online. I wanted to make copies

2009-08-16 Thread Chord
AR is beyond childish stuff like this. If AR's career was just beginning, then
this may be a real issue, but he is so far ahead of the pack that stuff like
this is like throwing a feather at a giant. AR doesn't care about this
nonsense and neither should we.

Being diplomatic, and avoiding arguments is one thing! Not accepting the

One may argue that the lyrics are suited for the characters of the
movie... But, if you've followed Tamil industry closely, you will know that
attacking people through song lyrics, is something IR has done in the past
too. That's his style. This is NOT the first time!

BTW, the song is not picturised on any characters of the movie, it is
picturised on IR himself! It's shot like a music video, having nothing to
  do
with the movie itself! Here's the link for the vid

About IR criticising Ella Pugazhum - I dont need the media to tell me
what it is! It is crystal clear what IR is saying!

Such statements exist in Hinduism, in vedas and puranas too, where
everything is attributed to God...It is a to say I don't take credits for
all my achievements, it's all given to me by God... It is not a matter of
philosophy, or beliefs Someone who claims to be so spiritual, whom
everyone calls a saint should very well know this and understand, whether
he believes in it or not! Even if he doesn't believe in it, do you think he
should have spoken on stage the way he did?
Do you think it is a mature comment, coming from a veteran of the stature
of IR? It is totally unwarranted and uncalled for! This is the point I'm

The lyrics further goes that world may change, people
  may
go wherever, but I'll stay here and serve the country.

The song lyrics are by Vaali. It seems appropriate for the movie ('Azhagar
  Malai
  http://popcorn.oneindia.in/movie-synopsis/2847/azhagar-malai.htmlis
about the egoistic and irate village heads and a youngster trying to
  change their attitude').

[arr] Re: Rank ARR combo music albums - my pick

2009-08-16 Thread rivjot
For me, ARR - Deepa Mehta ARR - Ashutosh are the most difficult to rank. ARR
- Shubash Ghai ARR - Raykesh got 2 albums each and both have been spectacular
as well.
ARR - Mani ARR - Shankar not so hard to rank as there has been around 7-8
albums.

 How about Deepa Mehta?

My CURRENT rank for Deepa Mehta/ARR would be:

 Earth
 Water
 Fire

But, mind you, each album is just mindblowing and the rank is subject to
 change and fluctuate with time.

AR is beyond childish stuff like this. If AR's career was just beginning, then
this may be a real issue, but he is so far ahead of the pack that stuff like
this is like throwing a feather at a giant. AR doesn't care about this
nonsense and neither should we.

m with u on this. some people will never understand and will come up with
big explanations for defending some other artists and never voice their

btw, the video is like a 80's cut with a song music having a 70's touch
to it. OMG! m wondering the purpose of this song.. just to express the ego

  Dear Ramesh,

Being diplomatic, and avoiding arguments is one thing! Not accepting the
truth when it is staring right on your face is another.

Here's the link for the vid
  http://www.youtube. com/watch? v=vIztOkvuHTY

This is the point I'm
  trying to impress upon.

The lyrics further goes that world may change, people
  may
go wherever, but I'll stay here and serve the country.

The song lyrics are by Vaali. It seems appropriate for the movie ('Azhagar
  Malai http://popcorn. oneindia. in/movie- synopsis/ 2847/azhagar-
malai.htmlis about the egoistic and irate village heads and a youngster
  trying to
  change their attitude').

I'll
  say that it's quite
