[arr] Drowned in Blue!

2009-09-15 Thread mb4zap®
Hi All,

After listening to Blue CD countless times on my Dolby Home Theater sound
system in last few days (and in mobile headphone when i am at office and in car
stereo when im on the move..) I have started to feel the soundtracks of Blue
has some uncanny atmospheric effect to it... the heavy reverberating overall
sounds, suppressed voices, deep sounds of music (e.g. rehnuma), almost hollow
vocal effect (like the female part of fiqrana)... they all reminds me the
effects of listening to music on sea shores... and it would probably sound this
way if I could go deep into sea and listen to music (no headphones obviously)...

Dont know if any of you would agree with me.. or I have gone mad with Blue! ARR
always keeps me mad about him with his music... only this time its almost
unbearable! :)

BR,
Moin Ali

Hey Aakash,

Hope you've heard Blue and hope you like the song Bhoola Tujhe. I just played
it on my keyboard and it sounds beautiful as an instrumental. Was wondering if
you would do your magic once again and create another beautiful instrumental of
this song with all effects. I listen to your other instrumentals quite often.
Thanks!

[arr] Aye Kudhahafiz - New and Improved

2009-09-15 Thread wiredbeats
Dear Rahmaniacs

With the Blues of the Blue and passages. I happened to play a mix i which did
like 2 years ago. This is a classic from Yuva - Kudhahafiz. The song is so way
ahead of its times even now that no other track has come out with the breezy
feel. The visuals just added to the beauty of the track. One of the DJs has
asked me to try a mix with samples from some of the popular dance tracks those
days. Incidently, i found few perfect matches from some Bob Sinclar tracks
which has a compatible key and groove. To this i added some more spices and it
was accepted well.:)
I called this mix called - Aye Kudhahafiz – The Long Drive Mix . Ofcourse with
total respect to the original. Now i have revisited and made an 'improved'
version which i am sure you will like it.
Now the 'New and Improved' version
here : http://www.wiredbeats.com/2009/09/15/aye-kudhahafiz-the-long-drive-mix/
Your feedback is appreciated.
As always Original is king!

[arr] Glamsham reviews Blue music (Simply a must buy!)

2009-09-15 Thread $ Pavan Kumar $
http://www.glamsham.com/music/reviews/15-blue-music-review-090904.asp

In many ways Shree Ashtavinayak Cine Vision's
BLUE is a unique film, having many firsts to its credit. It is Hindi
cinema's first ever under water, action adventure film with the cast
undergoing scuba diving training in order to shoot under some eighty
feet below the water, almost at the bottom of the sea! It is director
Anthony D'Souza's first film. Also, it is the first project where Oscar
winner A. R. Rahman has composed for action king, 'Khiladi' Akshay
Kumar. Yes, not many will be aware that even though Akshay Kumar and A.
R. Rahman have been dominating the Bollywood scene for more than a
decade, yet the two have never combined for any film, and so BLUE is
the first film where the two will share the same platform. Then we have
Australian pop sensation, Kylie Minogue, who features for the first
time in a Bollywood flick. With so many unique features to its credit,
combined with the finest international crew and some amazing underwater
action sequences, BLUE is the most anticipated Diwali release. And its
audio album too comes fraught with gargantuan expectations, BLUE being
the first album to be launched after A.R. Rahman's historic Oscar win.
And last and not the least, Resul Pookutty, another Oscar winner, is
the sound engineer for BLUE. Need we say more?

First let's
come to the most talked about song, featuring the international pop
sensation from Australia, Kylie Minogue, ''Chiggy Wiggy''. The number
is a perfect blend of soft pop and bombastic, earthy but all Punjabi
'bhangra', which makes it a totally 'dhamaal' dance track. Kylie's part
is naturally pop and the soft tune chosen is very infectious and
alluring, in -keeping with Kylie's super hot image. Her sensuously soft
vocals caress the senses and is the highlight of the composition, as
she is simply brilliant. The 'bhangra' part, sung by Sonu Nigam is no
great shakes, and shades of ''Tote Tote Ho Gaya'' (BICHOO) is present.
Although as seen in the promos of the song, the part where Akshay Kumar
comes in, accompanied by the sound of loud 'hoi' and 'dhols' and breaks
into the 'bhangra' jig, will certainly set the house on fire. All this
combined with the festive Diwali mood, the song having the added
propellants in the form of all the top stars of BLUE like Sanjay Dutt,
Lara Dutta and Zayed Khan, will no doubt rule the charts for a while,
although it will not have a long shelf life, as it is not worth the
hype. The A.R. Rahman stamp of quality is missing. His signature
musical orchestration, the fresh as a morning dew tune which is
expected from a Rahman composition too cannot be heard. The lyrics by
Abbas Tyrewala though are definitely fresh and instantly appealing.

However,
the next number, 'Aaj Dil Gustakh Hai', is a true blue Rahman number
and one is simply blown away by its sheer magical melody that is so
easy on the lips. The music maestro makes up for somewhat letting down
his fans, this time with a superb romantic composition, a fine love
ballad. The breezy song, complete with Rahman's superlative trademark
crescendo, single string guitaring and lovely background female
chorals, makes for a perfect romantic beach song. After a mesmerizing
''Kaise Mujhe Tum Mil Gaye'' (GHAJINI), Rahman comes up with another
gem of a romantic outing in the from of ''Aaj Dil Gustakh Hai''. The
moment the song commences with sensual female chorals and Sukhwinder's
trademark, well loved and admired TAAL type semi-classical singing, one
knows that this is Rahman's special Diwali gift to his fans. The number
may take a couple of hearings to grow, as is the norm with most Rahman
compositions, but grow it definitely will and stay on the play list of
many die-hard romantics for quite sometime. Sukhwinder is magical. His
chemistry with Rahman never fails, whether it is an inspirational,
romantic, situational or devotional composition, Sukhi always reserves
his best for Rahman. And 'sone pe suhaga' is the new nightingale,
Shreya Ghoshal, who is at her 'surily' best.

CHECK OUT: No BLUE song for Katrina!

''Fiqrana''
can be classified as a theme song, as it is a beautiful musical way
that the characters of the film are introduced through the song,
without it being too heavy on the senses. The dare devil, non caring
attitude of the protagonists is beautifully expressed through a highly
charged, high on octane composition that has a slight resemblance (in
parts) to Rahman's ''Dhakka Laka Bukka'' (YUVA). Vijay Prakash shows
that it's just not classical that he is adept at as he skillfully wades
through the song that has a slight rock touch to it as well. He is
aided by Shreya who comes in briefly and not to mention, Rahman's
acoustic innovations in the form of echo and synth. Once again the
opening guitar piece is haunting and keeps coming back, embellishing
the song, so does the amazing 'mukhda' which is the jewel in the crown.
Rajat Arora's lyrics go well with the spirit of the film and

Re: [arr] Very interesting story about ARR on manorama(Ouseppachan is in ARR's autorikshaw :)

2009-09-15 Thread Naveen Naushad
*Here is my translation of the Manorama article*

One early morning at 5 AMAn autorickshaw is heading towards Rajendra
Colony located at Saligramam, Chennai. The passenger is Malayalam composer
Ouseppachan, carrying his violin. And the driver? None other than A R
Rahman. How did this happen?

Ouseppachan is talking about the times he and ARR worked together at ARR's
room in Swamiyarmadam. ARR prefers to work at night. So they both get
immersed in the world of music and go on like that until the milkman rings
in the morning which is like their wakeup call. Back then ARR used to own a
private autorickshaw. It was in this auto that he took Ouseppachan to his
studio.

Ouseppachan's acquaintance with ARR can be traced back to the 80s. ARR was
in the orchestra for the song Devadoothar Paadi from the movie Kathodu
Kathoram which was Ouseppachan's debut. ARR was only about 15 at that time
and yet his mixing and editing would enhance the songs even beyond the
composer's vision. Ouseppachan believes this is why ARR became the favorite
of all composers at that time.

He doesn't distinctly remember when he met ARR for the first time. He
remembers the band comprising of ARR, Shivamani (drums), John Antony
(guitar) and also a Negro. The band quickly became popular then.

ARR worked with Ouseppachan in over 25 movies including Ulladakkam (*
Maayatha*), Witness (*Poovinu, Thumbamellam*), Thoovalsparsham (*Sugandham*)
etc..

Even after ARR became popular, he used to invite Ouseppachan to play violin
for some of his hit songs. ARR and Ouseppachan worked on an album called
Welcome 1990. The composition was done on ARR's dad RK Shekhar's harmonium,
which Ouseppachan believes is inaccessible to anyone today as ARR keeps it
as a prized treasure.

Not many people know that Ouseppachan was part of the violin group that
worked in Slumdog Millionaire. The composition supposedly happened years
back.

[arr] Cinefundas reviews Blue Music

2009-09-15 Thread $ Pavan Kumar $
http://www.cinefundas.com/2009/09/10/blue-music-review

lue – Smashing Fiesta for Rahman buffs
You’ll go wordless and to the extreme – speechless… Yeah! Here comes the
biggest Dhamaka from academy award winner. The stunning tunes leave you out in
abundant invigorations. What an extraordinary spell by Rahman? Distinctly, this
is gonna be the best musical album of the year.

CHIGGY WIGGY – Right mix of ‘West -n- Bhangra’
SINGERS: KYLIE MINOGUE, SONU NIGAM SUZANNE
LYRICS: ABBAS TYREWALA
You no need any introduction about this song. It has already haunted the entire
town with ‘Chiggy-wiggy’ mania. What makes the song sound special? The
wonderful mix of western-n-Bhangra style makes it happen. The song get-goes
with Kylie Minogue’s English lines and later with the coalescing touch of
Bhangra touch. The singers just sweep you out with their magniloquent
intonations, especially Kylie. The sound orchestration is mind-boggling as you
heed over it on your hi-fi surround systems.

BLUE THEME – Adrenaline-pumping
SINGERS: BLAAZE, RAQEEB AALAM, SONU KAKKAR, JASPREET SINGH, NEHA KAKKAR, DILSHAD
PUNJABI LYRICS: SUKWINDER SINGH

HINDI LYRICS: RAQUEEB ALAM
Lagtha Hai, Rahman has sprang-up with a special attraction for ‘Punjabi’
factors. As in the previous number, this signature rap song has it all with an
apposite mix. Just look into the singers and lyricists and you can patently
envisage the stylized tune much before heeding to it. Incisively, it’s sure to
surmount your expectations. Play it million times and you’ll get transfixed
listening to it more over again.

AAJ DIL – Sensuously tuned
SINGERS: SHREYA GHOSHAL, SUKHWINDER SINGH
LYRICS : MAYUR PURI
Well, if you’re an ardent buff of Rahman, here’s the best attributes that’ll
bring you the right guess even without the label ‘BLUE’. The fast-rolling song
penned by Mayur Puri has heavy chord works on guitar followed by ‘Latin
Rock-fangled notes on fortepianos. It’s much evident that only Rahman is much
glued to such patterns. Totting up, you’ve the typical ‘Bass-n-beats’ eclipsing
your senses. On the vocalisms, it’s a rare combo of Sukwindher on his husky
tone and Shreya Ghosal, the melodious voice. The songs would really do much
better once viewed on the screens.

BHOOLA TUJHE – Breezy touch on parts
SINGERS: RASHID ALI
LYRICS : ABBAS TYREWALA
The most highlighting part with this musical album is awesomely orchestrated
instrumentations and roping in best singers. Much unparalleled to the previous
numbers, ‘Bhoola Tujhe’ is a breezy number crooned by Rashid Ali. His ability
to intonate towards various octaves with an ease makes it sound perfect. More
than all, the running notes on stringed instruments embellishes. As in other
songs, there’s continuous striking of guitar chords accompanied with Cello on
base touch pulls the song behind the norms of what actually a best melody would
sound.

REHNUMA – Enchanting lyrics
SINGERS: SHREYA GHOSHAL, SONU NIGAM
LYRICS : ABBAS TYREWALA
Suno, Sunthe Jaao and you will just remain mesmerized with best coalesces of
melodic tune and apt vocals. More on parts, it reminds us off Rahman’s previous
tunes as ‘Hey Kudhaafiz ‘Yuva’ (‘Hey Goodbye Nanba – Aayitha Ezhthu) as the
tempo and stylized rhythms keep shifting on parts. As in other song, the
brilliant visuals would gradually enrich the song’s touchstone. Shreya Ghosal
and Sonu Nigam have proved of adeptness on their ducky melody.

YAAR MILA THA – Soothing Duet
SINGERS: UDIT NARAYAN, MADHUSHREE UJJAYINEE ROY
Thusly, it’s a song above mediocre amongst the other numbers. Per chance, it
enhances the ‘attraction quotients’ as we keep heeding to it. Rahman’s touch is
much revealing with innovative fill-ins. The beats don’t hop-skip into
different levels throughout the show.
As whole, ‘BLUE’ is something out-of-blue when it comes to the musical scenario
of Rahman. Of course, he has spelled distinguished tunes. On the dot, this is a
fantabulous piece of work from the academy award winner. With couple of
versions grounded with English based lyrics, the international audiences are
sure to get casted with Rahamania.

A brief translation:

National Award Winner Ouseppachan Shares His experience with ARR

A
R Rahman likes to work Overnight which was always stopped by the
Milkman’s call. I was driven to his home in Saali Gramam by ARR himself
in his private Autorickshaw.
I have known him for years. He played
the keyboard for my song “Devadoothar Paadi” from Kaathodu Kaathoram,
my first film as an independent Music Director. A 15 year old boy who
simply plays random tones on his Keyboard while he is in the recording
studio. Music was sweeter when edited and mixed by himself on his
keyboard. I guess this made him popular among other Music Directors as
many of them wanted Rahman for the Orchestration of their songs.

ARR has played Keyboard for over 25 of my films. Ulladakkom, Thoovalsparsham,
Witness etc are a few in that list.

Later
when he started composing I was invited to play violin for him. We
co-composed an Album too and it was titled Welcome 1990. All songs were
composed using R K Sekhar’s Harmonium, which he has now kept as a
priceless treasure out of anybody else’ reach.

Very few know
the fact that Ouseppachan was a part of the Troupe that orchestrated
the OSCAR winning songs of SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE, the composing of which
started a long time ago.

Subject: [arr] Drowned in Blue!

Hi All,

After listening to Blue CD countless times on my Dolby Home Theater sound
system in last few days (and in mobile headphone when i am at office and in car
stereo when im on the move..) I have started to feel the soundtracks of Blue
has some uncanny atmospheric effect to it... the heavy reverberating overall
sounds, suppressed voices, deep sounds of music (e.g. rehnuma), almost hollow
vocal effect (like the female part of fiqrana) they all reminds me the
effects of listening to music on sea shores... and it would probably sound this
way if I could go deep into sea and listen to music (no headphones obviously)..
.

Dont know if any of you would agree with me.. or I have gone mad with Blue! ARR
always keeps me mad about him with his music... only this time its almost
unbearable! :)

BR,
Moin Ali

I am not a prophet to predict anyone's doom if things are not set right. Nor
am I interested in doing it.

I believed (I still do) that this is a very valid point I was discussing on,
else I would not have made the time out to write my posts while attending to
my unwell daughter admitted to the hospital.

Having said that, the sound aspect has been something that has been haunting
me for quite sometime, and with Blue, this HAD to be brought out, period.

Let me make my intentions very clear, yet again -
I love ARR.. and I dont want another music director's sound quality to be
ahead of his. If that emotion of mine is making me sound like predicting his
doom (even though that was not my intention, not in my wildest dreams), I
can't help it.

I didnt start this discussion to debate - be it with a person or with a
group. Disagreements are bound to happen, I do accept them and I move on,
since it is a person's opinion and I respect it. But, I do not intend to stop
this discussion just because a person is not interested in discussing this.

I had to write this coz people here started taking it too personally - which
does not help serve the purpose of this discussion.

Arun, I don’t post much but could not help here after noticing a slight
unpleasantness in the tone of your mail. You are sounding as if ARR is
doomed in the future if he does not take care of this sound aspect. I
personally feel ARR is completely aware of what he and his team of sound
engineers are doing because we know him to be that kind of person – a
perfectionist to the core. And I think he has enormous clout with the
production companies that all he has to do is just talk with them if he
feels they are messing up with his music. I agree about the loudness (could
be because of these so called loudness wars) and a lot of times where the
orchestration is not clear but probably that is due to the massive amount of
layering and the instrumentation he does than to do with any shortcomings on
the part of his team or the mastering company. It is probably a nightmare
for his sound engineers to highlight each and every instrument and the
complex
layering that he does in his music.

I do agree with your observation about Dostana and Bacchna being clearer
but that is probably due to the absence of any complex layering that you
would find in a ARR song. Now given a choice between a straight forward
album of other music MDs (which does not grow with every listening) or a
slightly muddled up ARR album (as a result of his creativity), I would
personally go for the latter because there is so much to discover in our
boss’s music. Just my take. Am no technical expert like some of the others
here.

With every album and time, ARR is only seeming to go from strength to
strength turning even his detractors into fans, so I feel (my personal
opinion) this doomsday scenario is not warranted.

thanks

For me, each RAHMAN soundtrack / album is unique and what I do is listen to
it as an independent work and enjoy it. I don't waste my time in comparing
it with his earlier albums because there are no measurable units or
  parameters to compare them.

Likes or dislikes are personal and should not be so openly thrown in a

It is like asking from all the creatures of God ( including humans ), which

the chord progressions and arrangements of Aaj Dil.and I am sure even u
would have noticed that! It is really something unique and challenging too for
me to make an instru. for the same.

But unfortunately m not getting enough time to dedicate and also there are lot
of instrus pending! But neways, let me seei'll try my best to do
so.Cheers!

Thanks,
Aakash Shah

Hope you've heard Blue and hope you like the song Bhoola Tujhe. I just

wondering if you would do your magic once again and create another beautiful
instrumental of this song with all effects. I listen to your other
 instrumentals quite often. Thanks!

rehman touch -everywhere i see ppl using this term a lot, if you don't
mind, can you please explain what that is ? Every rahman song HAS got a lot
of hidden stuff that you can enjoy for a life time(personal opinion) what
exactly is that rahman touch that you feel is missing in blue ?

For me, each RAHMAN soundtrack / album is unique and what I do is listen
to it as an independent work and enjoy it. I don't waste my time in
comparing it with his earlier albums because there are no measurable units
 or parameters to compare them.

Likes or dislikes are personal and should not be so openly thrown in a
 public forum.

It is like asking from all the creatures of God ( including humans ), which
one is the best ? How can that comparison be valid when each specie is
unique and has its own personal traits ?

Enjoy the music and don't fight to prove anything this way or that
 way...

In many ways Shree Ashtavinayak Cine Vision's BLUE is a unique film, having
many firsts to its credit. It is Hindi cinema's first ever under water,
action adventure film with the cast undergoing scuba diving training in
order to shoot under some eighty feet below the water, almost at the bottom
of the sea! It is director Anthony D'Souza's first film. Also, it is the
first project where Oscar winner A. R. Rahman has composed for action king,
'Khiladi' Akshay Kumar. Yes, not many will be aware that even though Akshay
Kumar and A. R. Rahman have been dominating the Bollywood scene for more
than a decade, yet the two have never combined for any film, and so BLUE is
the first film where the two will share the same platform. Then we have
Australian pop sensation, Kylie Minogue, who features for the first time in
a Bollywood flick. With so many unique features to its credit, combined with
the finest international crew and some amazing underwater action sequences,
BLUE is the most anticipated Diwali release. And its audio album too comes
fraught with gargantuan expectations, BLUE being the first album to be
launched after A.R. Rahman's historic Oscar win. And last and not the least,
Resul Pookutty, another Oscar winner, is the sound engineer for BLUE. Need
we say more?

First let's come to the most talked about song, featuring the international
pop sensation from Australia, Kylie Minogue, ''Chiggy Wiggy''. The number is
a perfect blend of soft pop and bombastic, earthy but all Punjabi 'bhangra',
which makes it a totally 'dhamaal' dance track. Kylie's part is naturally
pop and the soft tune chosen is very infectious and alluring, in -keeping
with Kylie's super hot image. Her sensuously soft vocals caress the senses
and is the highlight of the composition, as she is simply brilliant. The
'bhangra' part, sung by Sonu Nigam is no great shakes, and shades of ''Tote
Tote Ho Gaya'' (BICHOO) is present. Although as seen in the promos of the
song, the part where Akshay Kumar comes in, accompanied by the sound of loud
'hoi' and 'dhols' and breaks into the 'bhangra' jig, will certainly set the
house on fire. All this combined with the festive Diwali mood, the song
having the added propellants in the form of all the top stars of BLUE like
Sanjay Dutt, Lara Dutta and Zayed Khan, will no doubt rule the charts for a
while, although it will not have a long shelf life, as it is not worth the
hype. The A.R. Rahman stamp of quality is missing. His signature musical
orchestration, the fresh as a morning dew tune which is expected from a
Rahman composition too cannot be heard. The lyrics by Abbas Tyrewala though
are definitely fresh and instantly appealing.

However, the next number, 'Aaj Dil Gustakh Hai', is a true blue Rahman
number and one is simply blown away by its sheer magical melody that is so
easy on the lips. The music maestro makes up for somewhat letting down his
fans, this time with a superb romantic composition, a fine love ballad. The
breezy song, complete with Rahman's superlative trademark crescendo, single
string guitaring and lovely background female chorals, makes for a perfect
romantic beach song. After a mesmerizing ''Kaise Mujhe Tum Mil Gaye''
(GHAJINI), Rahman comes up with another gem of a romantic outing in the from
of ''Aaj Dil Gustakh Hai''. The moment the song commences with sensual
female chorals and Sukhwinder's trademark, well loved and admired TAAL type
semi-classical singing, one knows that this is Rahman's special Diwali gift
to his fans. The number may take a couple of hearings to grow, as is the
norm with most Rahman compositions, but grow it definitely will and stay on
the play list of many die-hard romantics for quite sometime. Sukhwinder is
magical. His chemistry with Rahman never fails, whether it is an
inspirational, romantic, situational or devotional composition, Sukhi always
reserves his best for Rahman. And 'sone pe suhaga' is the new nightingale,
Shreya Ghoshal, who is at her 'surily' best.

Katrina!http://www.glamsham.com/movies/scoops/09/aug/29-no-blue-song-for-katrina-080901.asp
