Pritam I think sells more overall than any other composer right now, so yes,
from that point, he is number 1. But, of course, for sheer musical brilliance
and quality, we all know it's ARR who is king.

Bollywood's uncrowned number one composer, Pritam, is a die-hard fan of
music maestro, A. R. Rahman, and swears by his music. We all know how Pritam
acknowledged in an interview (on our very own portal) that JTYJN was the
music of the year for him and that Kabhi Kabhi Aditi was such a brilliant
composition that it was worth its weight in gold.

However, this Diwali, Pritam is pitted against Rahman, as his ALL THE
BEST...FUN BEGINS is facing serious opposition from BLUE, Rahman's first
Bollywood music album after the Oscar triumph. At present the situation is
that Rahman has won hands down (not that Pritam will mind at all!) in this
battle, as BLUE is currently the top seller in the market, across all stores
in the country and even Overseas, while ALL THE BEST... FUN BEGINS is in hot
  pursuit!

No doubt Rahman's name sells, as is evident from the fact that BLUE has
overtaken ALL THE BEST...FUN BEGINS, despite the presence of quite a few
chartbusters in the album. As Diwali nears, the competition will naturally
hot up and we can only say who won in the end when both the films release on
  16th October.

In the clash between Pritam and Rahman, one name we forgot to mention is
that of composer duo, Sajid-Wajid whose latest album, MAIN AURR MRS KHANNA
(which too is a Diwali release), is selling quite well and the film may
attract the family crowd, who wish for some wholesome 'mushy' entertainment.

As of now, it's Rahman all the way! So cheers, Rahmaniacs!

Very well said Roshan, I was writing something similar then read this.

@ chord - You didnt include a single song from Blue in that list, which I guess
speaks for a lot of things.

@sriramvr_in - You are right, everyone should have right to express his/her
opinion and nobody should try to force his/her opinion on others (as it just
doesnt work).
But you changed your statement mate! Now you saying that Blue album (only)
lacks souls and earlier you were saying Blue AND RECENT ALBUMS (recent albums
were Delhi 6, Yuvvraaj, Slumdog) lack soul.. so there is a HUGE difference.

Your intentions may have been good. but I wouldn't classify saying recent
albums of AR Rahman lacking soul as a constructive criticism. it merely
says that you didn't like the recent albums while the entire nation has been
 loving these soul-less songs.

Criticism is welcomed by everyone. but you have to choose words carefully
when doing that. these albums you said are lacking soul, happened to have
some of the greatest songs. how can you say that Masakali, Dil Gira Daftan,
Ishq Ada Hai, Meharbaan, Hawa Sun Hawa, songs of Jodha Akhabr and many, many
more gems like these are soul-less ?

you can say that you didn't like them, but then again, if you didn't like
them, just simply skip it. You don't have to force yourself to listen to
something and then complain about it.

Here is a sample of constructive criticism if you would like

I didn't like Ae Bachoo from Gajini, because I thought the song was trying
hard to be a hard-rock kind of song but the tune didn't fit quiet well for
that format. I also think that the guitar solo could have been a bit more
 long and melodious.

But, I do love Behka. the tune was simple, even I could sing along with it..
and when the Saxophone kicked in, I was like.. WOW

But imagine what would happen is I said Ghajini album is soul-less. I cannot
do that. Because there is one gem of a song in it. I skip songs I didn't
like, i listen to the song I love.

Gopal, This group used to be a great forum previously but the fact that many
new people are fearing to accept any criticism these days!

Here again, don't classify people as old members and new members. it implies
that the group used to be great once but the new members ruined it.

Try to get along with us new members :) and you will see that we are no
 different than you old pals

 DUSTBIN FORTUNES
Both Drohi and the song bombed but because of that association my
relationship with that lyric writer continued and whenever I was in Mumbai,
me, the violin player and the lyric writer used to meet up once in a while
and at that time I was just beginning to work on the idea of Rangeela. When
I mentioned the story to both of them, they got very excited and the violin
player composed a tune for which the lyric writer wrote a song. I was very
impressed with both and committed to both of them that they will be doing the
music for Rangeela. They were thrilled to bits.

A few days later Maniratnam made me hear the songs of Roja at his home on
Chennai and I was simply blown away with the orchestral brilliance of
A.R.Rahman. I got too greedy and at any cost wanted to get that sound in my
film and went back on my commitment to the violin player and signed Rahman
instead, which understandingly left the violin player in a very angry and a
heartbroken state. The lyric writer pleaded with me not to do that to his
friend and I said it is just a professional decision in the best interest of
 the film.

I spoke to Rahman about the lyric writer and told him that his first song
didn't work but I do believe that he is very good. Rahman said, If he is
good enough for you he is good enough for me.

Thus that lyric writer named Mehboob came into Rangeela minus the violin
player and the first song he wrote was Tanha Tanha. I played that song to
Maniratnam and he was mighty impressed with the fact that he hasn't heard a
song since a long time which didn't have the words dil, deewana and sanam and
 signed on Mehboob for Bombay.

With the super success of both Bombay and Rangeela Mehboob got a very big
name and credibility and using that he recommended his closest friend the
violin player to Sanjay Leela Bhansali who was looking for a new music
director for Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and thus was born Ismail Darbar.

After the tremendous musical success of Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam which also
timed with a couple of Rahman albums not doing well including my own Daud
Ismail Darbar was the new musical genius on the block. I called Ismail Darbar
up to congratulate him and he didn't pick up my calls.

Later on Ismail gave an interview where he said that now that he is a
success, everybody is calling him including Ramgopal Varma. That was
obviously his revenge on the heartache I gave him by dumping him from
 Rangeela.

[arr] Song Recommended Highly!!!! (non ARR)

2009-10-11 Thread ichord
Forgive this non ARR post, but I just revisited one of my favorite songs in
recent years. It's from a private album called Sona sung by Sona Mohapatra
released in 2006. The song is called Kabhi Nahin Aana It's truly a melodic
gem, but the guitar interludes and the soft minimalistic instrumental treatment
remind of an ARR style composition. Notice how the instrumentation builds up
as the song goes on.just like how ARR would do it. Music is by Ram
Sampathhe really did a great job here. The lyrics are absolutely beautiful
and she has sung it with so much feeling. To me, this is the only truly great
song in that album.

Here is a video of that song:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qP2mEIgOqTUfeature=related

Song sounds even better in higher quality kbps.

Again, even though this is a non ARR post, I thought that since we are all
music lovers first, I wanted to share this. Many of you may have already heard
this song or own this album.

I wish ARR would hear this song.maybe he has. I know 100% sure he would
absolutely love this track.

 -Rahman's first Hollywood venture :)
-Music used at some prominent places

 The bad:
-Rahman's music is not the only music in the movie
-Movie doesn't start with Rahman's music
-Sajna, the song, is not featured in the movie, although, the theme can be
 heard
-Kurukuru is not featured in the movie, bits can be heard here and there
-Nana is featured in the movie, and also for the end credits

Sure, from above, you can see that there's more bad than good, but I'm not
disappointed. I'm glad I'm finally able to walk into any records store here
in LA and pick up a soundtrack by Rahman and that I can hear Rahman's music
 in a Hollywood movie.

Looking forward to more Hollywood ventures and some amazing soundtracks by
 Rahman in the future!

The track is so fresh even now and it gave his career new wings. Bombay dreams

Yes absolutely no doubt about it. Chaiya Chaiya is ARR's biggest all time hit.
The reaction I saw in public after Chaiya Chaiya for ARR I neveer saw that
again or before it. Even the guys who criticized ARR also started praising him
after Chaiya Chaiya.

I m not saying that Chaiya Chaiya is the best track of ARR till date, all I

Big dreams in the pipeline

Flautist Navin Iyer on working with his mentor A.R. Rahman, his collaborative
album and his experiments with unusual flutes
It’s what you might call a quintessential Chennai music success story — boy
begins learning Carnatic music at the age of three-and-a- half; has his flute
arangetram in his teens presided over by acclaimed vocalist,
Balamuralikrishna; does jingles with his childhood friend (music director
G.V. Prakash) when he is just out of school ; is ‘discovered’ by the movie
industry at Saarang, where he does a hat-trick as best instrumentalist three
years running while studying engineering; and turns down a job with Infosys
to end up working with none other than A.R. Rahman.
Meet Navin Iyer, who at 24 is one of the most in-demand flautists in the film
music industry, having recorded for over 500 movies in Tamil, Telugu,
Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi.
“I think I’m the youngest musician in the cine industry — not counting
singers,” says the young flautist (and self-taught saxophonist) as we meet at
his brand new personal studio in the heart of Mylapore.
Life is hectic since, as he explains, he’s one of a handful of flute ‘session
artistes’ in the country. “Being a session artiste is another skill
altogether,” he says, lounging behind the studio computer in an old pair of
jeans and faded T-shirt. “The music director will demand a particular feel
for a song, which you have to deliver; at the same time, you have to be able
to add your own creativity and compose on the spot. You should be able to
change gears between the two immediately.”
Recordings may last just a few minutes — his flute piece for ‘Akkam Pakkam’
from Kireedam took just four (“sometimes things just fall into place”) — or
up to two hours for background scores, which generally take longer. “You need
to watch the movie scene to get in sync with it,” he says, comparing the
process to being ‘in a relationship’ . “Unless you spend time with it, talk
to it, you won’t get the exact feel.”
One movie scene is etched in his memory for good — the one in Rang De
Basanti, his first recording for Rahman. “He just called me and said ‘can you
come?’” he recalls, still sounding awed. “My flute comes in the background
score of the scene after Madhavan’s character dies… it was a very emotional
scene, very emotional for me too!”
Since then, he’s played for a number of Rahman’s projects, including the big
one, Slumdog Millionaire. “The morning of the recording for Slumdog…I’d
actually overslept, but luckily made it in time,” he says, adding with a
laugh, “And then, my God, the Oscar!”
He travels quite a bit for recordings, and sometimes, music directors travel
to him, such as Vishal of Vishal-Shekhar who came down to Chennai just to
record the flute track for Aakhon mein teri from Om Shanti Om, because he
liked Navin’s ‘ideas and style’ .
“Earlier, music directors would have the entire score written and cine
musicians played according to that,” comments Navin. “Now music directors are
more open; they enjoy it when we give our inputs. It adds a new dimension to
a song.”
Gone also are the days when session artistes had to come together at one time
to record a song; today, with the magic of track technology, individual
artistes can play their parts when they have time and “ping pong on to the
next recording,” he says. “Right now, for example, I’m practising during the
day for my concert tour with Earthsync, so I’m often recording through the
night.”
The day we meet, he’d been at Malayalam music director Ouseppachan’s studio
at T. Nagar recording till 4 a.m., had gotten a couple of hours of sleep, hit
the gym (“it keeps you kicking”), and fit in our interview before a practice
session at 10 a.m. That’s the way he likes it — busy, with plenty of variety.
At his studio is a specially-made glass flute which he’s been experimenting
with. Next up is one made of clay, another of marble and a saxophone of
bamboo.
Ready to roll out is a collaborative album, ‘Three 4 the Music’, with
mridangist D.A. Srinivas and violinist Raghavendra Rao that connects Carnatic
music with

Personally what i felt is nowadays ARR's song became too
predictable hence feels repetitive.Personal ly i found the 'Sajana' song from
CR in most of the parts sounds cliche. Missing the haunting interludes, more
hip hop styled ,no orchestration at all, easy to sing

Agreed with you Jemsheed. I still remember those old days when people never
used to attempt ARR songs in stage shows as they know that it would be a
complete mess and its not that easy to sing. But nowadays some songs can be
easily hummed by anyone. But it doesn't mean that ARR has ran out of his
standards.

I strongly feel that earlier we had less means to hear music. A song can be
heard only once from home a day. Because we will be busy with our works and we
cannot carry our tape recorder everywhere. So it gained soul and lasted long.

But when Ipods. Mobiles, Car stereos and various other means came in, we are
listening ARR songs everywhere. When we travel in Cars, songs are played in car
stereos, when we work Ipods are beside. So definitely when we are repetitively
playing some songs in loop. It sounds repetitive and we will definitely skip
the albums so fast, and wait for the next one to release. We cannot complain us
or ARR regarding this matter. Because as a human being like us, he doesn't know
how to satisfy different music listeners of different taste.

Bollywood's uncrowned number one composer, Pritam, is a die-hard fan of

acknowledged in an interview (on our very own portal) that JTYJN was the
music of the year for him and that Kabhi Kabhi Aditi was such a brilliant
composition that it was worth its weight in gold.

(which too is a Diwali release), is selling quite well and the film may
attract the family crowd, who wish for some wholesome 'mushy' entertainment.

and that is the way a rustic punjabi might sing. When it comes to English,
there is no right or wrong pronunciation. Yankee way is different from

Re: [arr] Right to opinion.

2009-10-11 Thread Roshan
I don't agree with you people at all.

Lack of orchestra and interludes ?

Guys, just remember this.. AR is composing for films, he is not making
classical music. He picks the instruments based on what the requirement is
for the movie. so, don't expect to have a full orchestra playing all the
songs for a movie like Blue. But still, listen to the tracks like Itinerary
from CR, that Continium piece in Rehna Tu, the Flute interludes in Hawa Sun
Hawa, the orchestral arrangements of Tu Muskura.. the Sax in Tu Bole...
etc..

Come on.. two minutes of awesomeness in Rehna Tu, the soulful tune and
equally brilliant singing in Dil Gira Daftan, if yall think that these
songs sound too repetitive, i will probably go an check my ears. :)

I just don't get it when people complain about ar loosing his touch or
becoming repetitive. For me, I think rahman became more versatile now. he
has reached a stage now that he can decide not to have a indian style
interlude for a song like Sajna. there is absolutely no need for it. it is
a western song and you don;t get to hear much interludes in a RB or Soul
singing. because, simply there is no need for it in that genre. Less is
More

And I think, all type of music, whether it is WEstern classical, Carnatic or
Hindustani or japanese or chinese, have their own charm and beauty. if a
song doesn't have Carnatic Raga in it, it is not going to become soul-less.
I am sure Western and Hindustani music can also bring soul to a song.

for anyone who has doubts, Listen to the track called One man's dream by
Yanni

That's just my opinion

  Also just saw the movie.

I am pretty disappointed that ARR did this movie. The music has been totally
suppressed.. n ot like bollywood films where music plays a big role in the
story. Makes me question whether its worth for ARR to take hollywood projects
with directors who won't do justice to his music.

Unfortunate. .

 should really be R.

The music: Well, given that this is a comedy movie, the music should not be
taken too seriously. Music in these comedy movies just plays in the
background, without getting too involved in the movie. And that is exactly
the treatment it's received here. Although, Rahman's tracks have been used
throughout the movie, the movie contains various other tracks not featured on
 the Soundtrack.

 The good:

Looking forward to more Hollywood ventures and some amazing soundtracks by

The Poetic Social Mission will see each participant reading a section of a

Muqabala is like 100 mts race. Couldnt sustain its effect.
Chaiyya chaiyya wins hands down. I dont feel even ARR will be able to be a part
of something like that again. It was team work at its best.
Mani's idea, Santosh Shivan's photography, Farah's choreography, Mallaika's
oomph, SRK's energy, Sukhwinder's raw voice, Gulzar's lyrics and ARR's magic.

interview withBollywood Hungama, Vipul shares his experience making London
Dreams- one of the most awaited films of this year.

Music surely plays an important role in a film like this, how has the music
by Shankar Ehsaan Loy (SEL) evolved? Moreover, wasn't A.R. Rahman supposed
to do the music initially...then how did SEL come on board? *
When Mr. Rajkumar Santoshi was supposed to make this film, A.R. Rahman had
been approached to do the music. In fact, even after the film came to me, we
had talks with Rahman but he could not provide us with the time commitment
which we required. Then I immediately thought of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. The
brief I gave them was that since the film is a musical, the music of the
film has to be spectacular; in fact it's no less than the 3rd hero of the
film. I wanted them to give a score which would not just be popular but be
remembered by people for years to come and I think that we have got
somewhere in achieving that goal. I also want to compliment Prasoon who has
written some really thought provoking lyrics and I am extremely satisfied.

It is a general prevalent trend, practice, norm, habit, whatever it is called
that English movies don't give a great importance to music. No way like music
is a central part, the real hero/ heroine of our bollywood movies. Recall that
they even dumped Heart will go on at the ending credits in Titanic.

So, it is not the individual movie CR or its financier/ producer/ director who
had done like this. It is likely to happen in most of the hollywood movies.

 Makes me question
whether its worth for ARR to take hollywood projects with directors
who won't do justice to his music. Unfortunate..

There is no way ARR should stop doing hollywood or other foreign countries'
languages' movies, me think.

English movies rule the earth and bring big following and money, so it is ARR
who has to adapt to their ground realities and needs to change his music to
something that sounds good on hearing without needing any video or movie or
visual or storyline, whatever.

And I think that will be a new learning for ARR also, and, creative that he is,
that will bring us an entire new type of music from him. And then ARR will rule
the entire world like he has been ruling Hindi and Tamil music industry for 18
years.

For this, I pray to God to be with ARR while he finds his way through this new
untrodden territory.

[arr] Re: Right to opinion - do you think these songs lack soul?

2009-10-11 Thread Din, D, Nesh
Dear Chord, its very difficult to explain from my point of view. You see, i
have been an ARR fan ever since 4 y/o (the time Roja released) - apparently
which ever song i enjoyed back then, had music by ARR only, be it Duet, Pudhiya
Mugam, Thiruda Thiruda, Love Birds, Kadhalan, May Madham, etc etc. :), i grw up
listening to ARR's Tamil songs only.

But became a true maniac from Kadhalar Dhinam. So this only means his carnatic
pattern is inside my blood. Though i enjoy allot the songs u mentioned below,
its been quite sometime i re-visited them (thanks for reminding me though). My
hands never fail to click on his Duet, Thiruda Thiruda, Kadhalan, Iruvar,
Indian, May Madham, Alaipayuthey etc etc folders or Cds, but the list of songs
u mentioned does slip off my mind nowadays. Not saying its lacking soul, but
just using that line as 1 of our member mentioned it and in a way, it does
apply to my kind of expectations from boss. The current songs are extremely
good, new in every aspects, which is why many r appreciating ARR more, because
of the innovative songs he provides. His current songs have more complicated
twist and what not. That i agree. :)

But this does not mean i expect a Roja, Thiruda Thiruda album from him anymore.
Im quite contented with what he has done in 1990s. I can go on listening it for
the rest of my life, still studying those songs. :)

But its a hard fact that the lack of usage of carnatic these days in his songs
is why many fans r complaining the 'missing touch'. That is why i posted it
here, just to let some people know, and not a request for ARR to compose songs
the same style again. Please note that.

The day i found it out, asked that gentleman who is well versed in carnatic
music and referred back to my frens, and its a bullseye! Thats the sole fact.
Thats why i was actually expecting a more detailed information from Swaps, who
is a master of music here. But he must be busy.

ps : ill tell u a few songs that will make the whole list u gave collapse for
me :).

Anjali Anjali - Duet
Pennala Pennala - Uzhavan
Ennavale - Kadhalan

:) Subham. :)

 Hey Din,

You said, the lack usage of carnatic raagam is the sole fact of his lack of

nothing that ARR has created recently has soul, am I correct? If you miss
Carnatic raagas, that I can understand, but please do check out the flute
continuum raaga ending of Rehna Tu from D6 when you can.

I'm just curious here, but do you feel the following recent songs by ARR lack
 soul?

 Starting from Guru:
 Tere Bina
 Aye Hairathe Aashiqui
 Jaage Hain
 Jashne Bahaar
 Khwaja Mere Khwaja
 Man Mohanna
 In Lamhon Ke Daaman
 Jashne Bahaar Instrumental
 Khwaja Instrumental
Jaane Tu Mere Kya Tha (Sukhwinder version)

Ishq Ada Hai (male and female)
 Hawa Sun Hawa

 Rehna Tu

 Silent Invocations

 Latika's Theme
 Jason and Cynthia Suite
 Intervention
 Undress
 Sajna
 Kurukuru Kan
 Salvadore
 Waterfall
 Animal Spirits
 Jason and Cynthia Piano Theme
 Arya

 Tango

If you do think all of these songs lack soul, then I have very little more to
 comment. Thanks.
