[arr] Dilli 6 tops Guruji's most searched albums of '09

2009-12-30 Thread $ Pavan Kumar $
MUMBAI: The popularity of web music searches is hardly unknown. As 2009 comes
to an end, Guruji.com, a popular music search engine released a list for the
'Top Music Searches of 2009'. So what exactly is it that bollywood music lovers
have been searching for?
Rahman's Dilli 6 remains the top most searched album on the website, while Amit
Trivedi's year opener Emotional Atyachaar takes the top spot on bollywood
singles. A.R. Rahman's toe tapping hit 'Masakalli' and 'Hai Junoon' from New
York. Also in the list are numbers like Dhan Te Nan, Marjani, Sapnon Se Bhare
Naina, Tera Hone Laga hoon, Chiggy Wiggy, All Izz Well and Paisa Paisa in
descending order.
Guruji.com CEO Anurag Dod says, We have witnessed a surge in the traffic from
across the country for all the latest songs and albums released in 2009 and of
course the long tail - of obscure and difficult to find songs. This compilation
gives us a holistic picture of the most searched for songs in the year 2009.
The list has been compiled by taking in account the number of hits received
from the metro cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune,
Calcutta, Chandigarh, Indore and Cochin by the Guruji music search users.
As far as the top searched singers of the year goes, Atif Aslam and yesteryear
singer Kishore Kumar took the fifth and fourth position respectively, Nausad
and Geeta Dutt, the third and second, and interestingly K L Sehgal has captured
the prestigious first place in this list. The above top five singers have been
tracked quite often for their hits during 2009.
Finally, the Guruji.com Best of 2009 also consists of a list of the most
searched for 'Old favourites' as a special mention. This list of old classics
is populated by Aradhana and Kashmir ki Kali in the fourth and third positions.
The second position is populated by Padosan, while Abhimaan occupies the first
place in this classic battle. With 2009 coming to a close, the other song
steadily being searched for is All Izz Well from the movie 3 Idiots.

Government is not going to do anything to curb piracy on its own.
Government officials and their families themselves must be hearing
pirated music and seeing pirated movies.

Should we initiate something to drum up support for curbing piracy?

Should we initiate something on places like onlinepetition.com giving
worrisome these details like you mentioned, and seek people to sign on
it and when a respectable number of people sign it, then we can get it
published on newspapers to prompt government to do something about it.

There are lakhs of members totalling from here, from orkut arr groups,
from facebook, and other places, I think many of them will promptly
willingly sign on such a petition.

I think even a single PIL (public interest litigation) in Indian
Supreme Court might make the Judiciary considering issuing directives
to appropriate authority to initiate action on this front.

Side by side, may be, we can start a blog in which we enlist websites
that are openly giving music/ movies files for download or giving
links for free download. If any authorized agency does feel moved to
do anything on this count, then such a list will come handy for them
to start working, by making such sites delete their pirated content.

I thing doing at least soemething is need of the moment instead of
just lamenting here on the prevalent state of affairs. Mentioned above
are some minimal things that we can do within our limited time and
putting minimum money for this cause.

Anyone willing to participate in this effort may please come forward.
A core group needs to be formed first to coordinate on such efforts. I
wonder if Vijay would like to volunteer for playing a key role in this
effort.

[arr] MSN Indian of the Year: ‘Jai Ho’ Rahman

2009-12-30 Thread $ Pavan Kumar $
http://news.in.msn.com/national/article.aspx?cp-documentid=3504102

MSN Indian of the Year: ‘Jai Ho’ Rahman
An overwhelming number of MSN viewers participated in the ‘Indian of the Year’
poll, giving a clear ‘Jai Ho’ mandate to music composer A R Rahman. 22 per cent
viewers voted for Rahman, as against 17% voting for the nearest contender
Sachin Tendulkar. Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi bagged the third slot
securing 16% votes. Nandan Nilekani and Moon man Madhavan Nair got 9% and 7%
respectively.
Here is what makes Mozart of Madras pride of India:
MSN India readers voted Allah Rakha Rahman or A R Rahman as we know him today
as the Indian of the Year 2009. Winning with a thumping majority, among a
line-up of leaders from politics, business and non-government sectors, the ace
music composer proved once again that his music transcends barriers and
generations to create a cult of its own. Known for being at ease equally with
hip-hop, reggae, traditional Indian music, western classical music and Sufi, A
R Rahman's music composition is unsurpassed and devoured by audience the world
over.

The Oscar winning music director has several national, regional and
international awards to his credit. Born in a devout Hindu family, early
struggles in life made him an atheist and subsequently, he embraced Islam
reviving his faith in the universal power.

Early starter
Rahman started music lessons at the tender age of four. Born to R K Sekhar, a
composer, arranger and conductor in Malayalam films, his inclination towards
music was but natural. At a very young age he began to experiment with the
synthesizer, which his father acquired from Singapore. Soon after his father
passed away, he joined Maestro Illayaraja's music troupe as a keyboard player.

After working for several films and jingles he won a scholarship to the Trinity
College of Music at Oxford University and graduated with a degree in Western
Classical Music. Once he got back, he continued working with the advertising
industry, while being an arranger for famous music directors. It was a chance
meeting with the veteran film director Mani Ratnam that changed his fortunes
for good.
Oscar glory
Thanks to Rahman, it was a dream run at the Oscars for India in 2009. Danny
Boyle's rags-to-riches romance set in India, 'Slumdog Millionaire', won eight
Oscar awards. Rahman won the Academy Awards for best original score ('Slumdog
Millionaire') and song (Jai Ho). Here is how Rahman summed up his tryst with
Oscar glory, I want to thank everyone. The essence of the film is optimism and
hope. All through my life I had the choice of love and hate...I chose love and
I am here.
World's top seller
Rahman debuted with 'Roja', and won both raving reviews and critical acclaim.
After a string of hits in Tamil films and Bollywood, he was invited to compose
music for Andrew Lloyd Weber's musical 'Bombay Dreams'. Soon he started
composing music for Hollywood films. Today he holds concerts across the world
and has been nominated for Grammy award. In a career spanning over a decade, he
has sold more than 100 million records of his film scores and soundtracks
worldwide, and over 200 million cassettes, making him one of the world's
all-time top selling recording artists. And there's more to come from this
gifted music composer who is only 43-year

1. Sonia Gandhi
She hailed from a different race and country, worshipped a different God and
spoke a different language. But still, what she has done for India in the last
ten years has made her a true Indian and fetched her a top position in the most
talked about Indians of the decade. After remaining detached from the Indian
political scene after the demise of Rajiv Gandhi, Sonia finally took the
political plunge in 2004 and there has been no looking back since then.

She has led the Congress to an unanticipated victory at the Lok Sabha election,
chosen Manmohan Singh as the PM, willingly keeping away herself. Soon, the
world realised that the partnership was ‘an all profit’ one and the two revived
the Congress rule and have steered the country towards stability and constant
growth.

2. Sachin Tendulkar
Whoever thought Sachin’s rule was over has another one coming! He has bounced
back and like how! It was in the year 2007, during the DLF cup in Malaysia that
Sachin made a ‘well deserved’ comeback only to respond to the critics who
believed that his career was inexorably sliding with his 40th ODI century. And
soon the master blaster showed his ‘cricketing’ prowess once again! But it was
the end of the decade that saw Sachin at his all time high.

Not only did he complete his twenty shining years on the Indian cricket scene,
but made it all the more special by shining bright as the highest scorer in
both forms of match – ODI and Test Cricket!

3. Amitabh Bachchan
When an ageing Bachchan was getting movies like Lal Badshah and Suryavansham to
prove his worth, wisdom struck and AB became choosy about the roles he did. And
in no time, Big B’s fans witnessed a phoenix-like rising.

Star Plus brought Bachchan into the drawing rooms with Kaun Banega Crore Pati
and since then the Superstar of the Millenia has not looked back. Movies like
Mohobbatein, Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, Black, Chini Kum and the recent Paa make
Big B a living legend.

4. A R Rahman
We already owe him a big one big for relentlessly bring to us the best in
music, but his latest stint in Hollywood have given Rahman’s fans another
reason to hero worship the gifted musician. After wooing music lovers in India,
Rahman with his ‘Jai Ho’ composition for Slumdog Millionaire, not only bagged
maximum nominations at the Academy Awards, but also brought home the Oscar for
the ‘Best Music Score.’ The man has quietly raised the bar for the Indian music
fraternity to outshine in the international arena.

5. Abhinav Bindra
This shooter got the chance to live the dream that every Indian has cherished –
of brining home the Olympic gold! The quiet and bespectacled Bindra brought
laurels to the nation by getting his hands on the first ever individual Olympic
Gold medal in 108 years.

Thanks to him, the world salutes the Indian national flag and our anthem was
played in the honour of his historic victory! Soon, the ordinary Bindra became
extra-ordinary and the country got another reason to feel proud!

[arr] Top 10 Bollywood songs of 2009

2009-12-30 Thread $ Pavan Kumar $
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/entertainment/music/Top-10-Bollywood-songs-of-2009/articleshow/5391997.cms

ollywood churns out hundreds of films and many more songs year after year,
since music is an integral part of Indian cinema. The year gone by
had chartbusters like Emosanal Attyachaar and Masakalli that thoroughly
entertained listeners.

Here’s a list of the 10 most happening songs of 2009 from various genres that
created waves in the music industry and remained audiences’ favourites once
released. The list shows that Pritam Chakraborty and AR Rahman rule the charts.

Emosanal attyachaar
Bollywood music got a boost in the very beginning of 2009 with the energetic
and instantly likable number Emosanal Attyachaar. Crooned by Bony Chakravarthy,
the song from Dev.D that echoed the music of marriage bands, was composed by
Amit Trivedi. The quirky number became a favourite of the younger generation
and stood out among other songs released during that period.

Masakalli
This expressive number from the film Delhi-6, sung by Mohit Chauhan, bowled
people over. An AR Rahman composition, it’s a free flowing, addictive, fun
song. Masakalli is still being played on music channels and radio and it’s
expected to stay with music buffs for some time to come, owing to its joyful
mood.

Aahun aahun
One of the biggest hits of the year was from the film Love Aaj Kal. It has an
electrifying start with the strumming of the guitar, and is an amalgamation of
a hit Punjabi pop song by singer Jazzy B, and Pritam Chakraborty’s composition.
Sung by Neeraj Shridhar, Aahun Aahun keeps juggling between the two genres and
gets people dancing.

Dhan Te Nan
Composed by Vishal Bhardwaj, this song from Kaminey is edgy and energetic.
Sukhwinder Singh and Vishal Dadlani go behind the mike for the track. While
Sukhwinder gives it a rustic flavour, Vishal adds the rock touch to the song.
Dhan Te Nan has a certain magic that is engaging and holds the interest of the
listener till the very end – the reason why it topped the music charts.

Hai Junoon
This song from New York caught the attention of young listeners for its hip and
foot-tapping music. Sung by KK in his signature style and composed by Pritam
Chakraborty, it topped the charts.

Hadippa
Mika Singh and Sunidhi Chauhan teamed up to sing Hadippa, which spells loads of
energy. Its foot-tapping composition made it a hit dance number. The song from
the film Dil Bole Hadippa was composed by Pritam Chakraborty and it sort of
reinvented Punjabi folk, even though the film tanked.

Chiggy Wiggy
Bollywood showcased its international connect with the song Chiggy Wiggy from
the not-so-hit film Blue as it was sung by international pop star Kylie
Minogue, with ample support from Sonu Nigam. The first part of the song is in
English and thus completely western, but Sonu enters with the dhol and brings
in the Hindi flavour. This one is also Rahman’s composition, and even though
many said it was far from his best work, with much criticism coming the way of
Kylie Minogue and the film’s makers, the song clicked anyway.

Tera Hone Laga Hoon
Pakistani singer Atif Aslam yet again proved his prowess with this song in the
recently released film Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani. One of the most romantic
songs of the year, the duet also had Alisha Chinoi behind the mike. It’s a
beautiful, soothing love ballad that tugs at your heartstrings. Once again, a
Pritam composition.

Aal Izz Well
Last but not the least is Aal Izz Well from forthcoming 3 Idiots – the track
has raw energy and youthful spunk. It’s a fun campus song that is filled with
whistles in the background. Sung by Sonu Nigam, Swanand Kirkire and Shaan and
composed by Shantanu Moitra, it was lapped up by music lovers as soon as it
came out.

Paisa Paisa
The track from De Dana Dan has a Punjabi touch. The catchy number is again from
Pritam’s stable and is a hit at the DJ consoles at weddings and parties
already.

You got one part of the answer right, not the other part. The reason is
definitely financial but it's financial feasibility and not financial

of the CD as a medium coincided in India.

RE: [arr] Re: Blue Telugu

2009-12-30 Thread wiredbeats .

I have few thoughts here.

Indian's are by far very poor CD buyers. And only few agents were resposible
for the CD sales as such in India and Rahman played a huge role in that. Now
the market is very disoriented. None of them are able to tackle piracy and the
only way is the surrender to the trend and release MP3s. This is actually like
going back to stone age.

If you look at the data (depending on the source), you might note that globally
CD sales have fallen by as much as 15% (adjustments to recession included).
India for the size that we are and that too with the world's largest film
factory, with most number of songs, sells lesser CDs than
denmark, sweden, norway. Basically countries smaller than most indian states.

This is because, we like music and want it fast and we won't mind downloading
from anywhere. Lets check it ourselves. Those who claim they have the entire
collection of rahman's works, do we have all original ACDs or cassesetes as
applicable?

secondly, The whole listening fashion is changed to iPODs. So even if we buy a
disc, we would most probably rip it and put them into an iPOD or make it part
of a compilation MP3 disc.

Thirdly, people are not so concious of 'fidilety'. Many actually don;t care
about it, as long as the tracks sound loud! ( refer loudness war). And what
they need, they get it from Mp3s.

Lastly, a delay of indian release of some big ticket films is suicidal.
Everyone had watched slumdog and everyone had the tracks when T-series decided
to release. Same for couples retreat. Theres a huge opportunity loss here.

If people as a market were concious of taste, then CD sales won't drop and
Worldspace radio wont go bankrupt to shut shop.

So...start buying CDs. Not only Rahman's. All the music you like.

You got one part of the answer right, not the other part. The reason is
definitely financial but it's financial feasibility and not financial
challenges. The age of the CD is over. A market like India was never even
there. The advent of unrestrained mp3 sharing on the internet and the rise of
the CD as a medium coincided in India.

Let me give you a statistic, shocking but true. How many CDs of Slumdog
Millionaire do you think T-Series sold in India? All of 60,000. And T-Series
printed Over 500,000 copies. For all the chest beating that we do on forums
like this, the reality of the day is that nobody pays for music anymore. Who in
his right mind would want to invest in manufacturing and distributing CDs
upfront in such a market scenario? How many CDs of the Telugu dubbed version of
a massive flop do you think will sell? 1000? Can you blame T-Series for not
releasing the CD? Music labels make money only off mobile ringtones and
ringback tones and TV and FM licensing in today's world. Whatever CDs they do
release is purely promotional expenditure, it generates paltry, if any, income
for them.

There is minimal upfront cost in distributing mp3s through the likes of Amazon.
That is the route any sensible business would take. I would be thankful that
T-Series is at least progressive enough to provide us with that option rather
than not release anything at all.

Can somebody please answer why many of Rahman music are not releasing on CD?
There are has been several instances in last few months.. makes me feel there
are financial problems (how can there be financial problems associated with
Rahman's music and how can money get into the way of music?). I am extremely
confused and very eager to know the reason.

Gops / Vijay, if possible, please give some explanation instead of just saying
no physical CD release everytime.

[arr] Semi ARR : - All's well that doesn't end well

2009-12-30 Thread Abdul Manaf
*All's well that doesn't end well*

*Delhi-6 to rerelease a year later with a new tragic ending. The new version
will have Abhishek Bachchan's character dying*

A year after the release of the ill-received Delhi-6, director Rakeysh
Omprakash Mehra is set to release the film with a new tragic ending.

The film was originally planned with Abhishek Bachchan’s character’s death
at the end. Mehra, apparently with considerable pressure from his producer,
UTV, decided to alter the ending to a happy one. Incidentally, Abhishek had
strongly advised his director-friend against the ending.

  Delhi 6
A member of the cast says, “Abhishek and Rakeysh had many arguments on the
subject. The producers felt that audiences will react adversely to
Abhishek’s character dying. Although Rakeysh was unhappy with it, he shot
the alternate ending.”

Now a year later, the character Roshan will die in a new version of the film
to be released very shortly. Confirming these developments, Rakeysh says, “I
made a mistake. I should have gone with my original script with the tragic
ending. Going by the reactions I got after I showed the newly edited film at
the Venice Film Festival in September, I am sure this is the right version
of Delhi-6.”

The new version will coincide with Rakeysh embarking on his next directorial
project, apparently the historical Mirza Sahibaan, which the director is now
in the process of casting.

   Rakeysh Mehra
Rakeysh is also set to begin a professional story bank within his production
house. The director says, “While there is an acute shortage of writers in
our cinema, new writers seem to have no access to the mainstream banners. We
want to give these writers a chance to bring their talents to our company.”

Rakeysh will also be introducing new directorial talent. “I am surprised at
the number of new talented writer-directors who are coming to us with
wonderful innovative ideas. I want to make these talented filmmakers a part
of my team. I can’t make all the films that I want to. These directors can
make some of them
