MANI HAS OTHER PLANS FOR RAAVAN’S AUDIO LAUNCHApril 23, 2010Home More newsMani Ratnam has decided to launch the audio of Raavan on April 24th. But sources close to the film unit say that the audio launch of the Tamil version will be held in Chennai at a later date, preferably before April 30th. Yet another piece of info is that Sony Music has bagged the audio rights of the Tamil and Telugu version for a huge amount. With the songs being scored by the Oscar winner AR Rahman, there is a speculation among the movie and music buffs that there would be several chartbusters in the album. www.behindwoods.com/tamil-movie-news-1/apr-10-03/raavan-mani-ratnam-23-04-10.html

It's like having an authentic South Asian meal for moviegoers from different cultures, retaining the values and vibrations of what we have in our very diverse culture. Re: [arr] Re: Hope no songs like baazi lagaa and Ek lo Ek muft will be in Raavan
And picking up the various threads Rawat, I really don't care to go back to SdM to tell you why I did not like the album. I know that would disappoint you that I am just writing it off. But I did invest a lot of time listening to the album and it somehow never stuck with me. I felt it was disappointing because it seemed like Rahman on an off day. I'm stepping on another landmine here, but it seemed more like the work of Rahman who made Tenali rather than the one who made Delhi 6. It happens to fans, especially to me. I worship Rahman, but I do not like all his work. SdM is, for me, along with Tenali, his weakest album. It is, bad! Vimaljk and especially Indmov Buff, yes, I think it was a little high handed to make such a blanket statement. But consider this... all Mani's masterpieces are in Tamil. Watch Aayutha Ezhuthu and Yuva back to back and see which has the Mani Ratnam touch it's AE. Yuva is a disappointment compared with AE. And think about it, AE is itself considered to be Mani's weaker efforts (though it is one of my favorites). Then you have Guru, which, as I already said, felt weak for me. Before this, you had Dil Se.., which underwhelmed me the first time I saw it, but as I thought more and more about it, it really stuck with me. But still, Dil Se.., after Iruvar? I just have a theory that Mani does not have that ingrained knowledge and instinct of Hindi that he has of Tamil. That ingrained knowledge and instinct is the Mani Ratnam touch for me. Remember Pyramid Natarajan in Alai Paayuthey? Remember Bharathiraja in AE? There aren't such characters in his Hindi movies. So, when Mani ends up making another Hindi movie, for me, I have low expectations, since I feel the Mani Ratnam touch is missing. To overcome that, he needs a powerful script with an entertaining story. That is what I want in Raavan. Will it be better in Tamil? I don't know, but I do think it would be better. (On a side note, Is it still called Asokavanam, or is it now Raavan even in Tamil? Last I remember was that there was some problem with calling it Asokavanam.) As for the Mani-ARR combo, I am not saying that other directors are better with ARR. All I'm saying is that we got Jodha Akbar and Delhi 6 with other directors but the last taste of the Mani-ARR combo was Guru, which was, I feel, not as good as the other 2 albums I mentioned. There was a lot of expectation, hype and hoopla that ARR was working with Gautham Menon, and that album turned out to be amazing. I want that magic back with ARR and Mani. I want a great movie with a great background score and a classic soundtrack. And finally, I love Aayutha Ezhuthu. I love the soundtrack and the movie. I revisit the movie at least once in 6 months. For me, that was a hat-rick of great Mani movies, following AP and KM. With three movies that I loved so much, it's no wonder that Guru pissed me off so much that I am wary of the next Mani Ratnam movie!! Another minor grouse I have is, after Mani worked with Suriya in AE (and I think he also dubbed for Abhishiek for the Tamil version), how can he cast anyone else?? For me, even an actor like Vikram, who is of such high caliber, is just miles behind the phenomenon that is Suriya! Feel free to disagree! Currently listening to: O Brother, Where Art Thou? 'Proove him wrong'... and what if , what if its true? Alaipaayudhee kannn, Kilivalile from Muthu, Jeans theme. Inspiration is not plagiarism like Himesh or Deva. To: arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com Date: Thursday, April 22, 2010, 1:35 PM  ..that storm being the music of Raavan. Once again, guys, just a few reminders and suggestions: 1) Communicating first impressions is OK. Don't pan anyone just because they had a first impression reaction to the music, either negative or positive in any extreme way. Once the dust settles, the storm clears, and reality of AR's music takes hold, more solid and reliable opinions will form. This is a place to express thoughts and feelings let them flow and don't take people's opinions too personally. 2) Now, for those who have extreme reactions to the music the first time go, either neg or pos, understand that it's a first impression only and try not to make conclusive and final statements. Take your time with AR's music... ..as you all know .perceptions change over time, his music grows, etc. etc. Always give AR's music a chance to grow and settle in you. Remember, AR's music is starkly original and he always tries to push the envelope in new directions.. so what you may hear in a new album may not fit in with what you're familiar about his music already, hence the extreme reactions we often see. Let the music become more familiar in your mind, let it settle in, let your mind form new ideas and concepts around his music, develop new musical schemas. . If after a while despite all this you still don't like the album, that's OK! Maybe you'll like the next one! And please don't pan anyone who doesn't like the album over time. 3) Please remember to buy original CDs. Guys, the music industry is suffering big time...CD sales are down, high quality private albums are lacking, overall music quality in films is inconsistent (except for Rahman's of course!) the music industry is uninspired and there's no money to be made in sales anymore. If that continues, the product value will diminish with less demand, and artists will not feel incentive and encouragement to put their best musical efforts in an album, esp. if they know that their hard work will be downloaded for free and not paid for. Like Rahman says, he can't teach you morals.. if you support an artist and like his work, buy the original CD. For most of us here, I don't think buying CDs will make us go hungry. 4) Celebrate the moment. Embarking on a brand new ARR album, music that touches our ears for the first time from the maestro is a very special time.cherish this for someday these experiences will be fond memories only. This is a Mani-ARR combo..very special time indeed. HAIL ARR! BEST OF LUCK TO THE MUSIC OF RAAVAN! MAY THE MUSIC TAKE INDIA AND THE WORLD BY STORM

[arr] Sony Music grabs Raavanan audio!
Sony Music grabs Raavanan audio! By Moviebuzz | Thursday, 22 April , 2010, 19:35 One of India’s leading music companies Sony Music has grabbed the audio rights of Mani Ratnam’s forthcoming Raavan’s Tamil version Raavanan and its Telugu dubbing Villain for a record price. Sources close to the development said: “The Tamil Raavanan audio launch will take place a few days after the Hindi Raavan audio which is to be launched on April 24. It will be a red carpet event as Chennai is the home town of Mani sir, ARR and Vikram. All of them will take part in the event, details are being worked out as the launch will happen on or before April 30.” The music of Raavan is composed by Academy Awards winner AR Rahman. Sony Music had lost out the Hindi audio of the film to T-Series, so they were determined to grab the Tamil and Telugu rights of the film. Remember Sony Music has the best AR Rahman library and is also close to the Oscar winning music director. Raavanan in Tamil and Telugu has an impressive star cast- Vikram, Aiswarya Rai, Prithviraj, Priyamani, Prabhu, Karthik and others. Mani Ratnam is the biggest brand name in south Indian cinema after Rajinikanth and Kamal Hassan. The Mani Ratnam- AR Rahman combo has never failed, and Raavanan is sure to be a chartbuster. http://sify.com/movies/tamil/fullstory.php?id=14939324

[arr] Milliblog reviews Raavan
Music review: Raavan (Hindi – A R Rahman) *Beera*, in true Rahman style, takes a spirited, free-flowing life of its own; the energizing tune, completely fresh vocals of Mustafa Kutoane’s literally African sound and Vijay Prakash’s spritely rendition…it all adds up perfectly. *Behene de* is gorgeous! Resembling the style of Taj Mahal’s Kuliridhu is a massive advantage, even as it takes many fascinating turns mid-way. Karthik is in dazzling form in this track! *Thok di killi*’s exotic sounds and energy have it in great stead even beyond those occasionally predictable Arabic’esque phases, thanks in large doses to the energizer bunny-level liveliness of Sukhwinder Singh. The way it ends, in almost a frenzy, is a nice touch! *Ranjha ranjha*, with its methodically ascending orchestration and earthy vocals by Rekha Bharadwaj, offers instant gratification. Add to that, Javed Ali’s polished vocals, some scintillating interludes and sheer lyrical drama by Gulzar – this is a clear winner! *Khili re* is Rahman-template in every note…that semi-devotional, heartfelt rendition by a lady – sounds functional, but is also the sole mildly-appealing track. *Kata kata* is a euphoric victory, but; immediately catchy and hummable, with enough mind-boggling layers hidden to unravel on multiple listens. Mani, as always, continues to bring the best out of Rahman! http://itwofs.com/milliblog/2010/04/23/music-review-raavan-hindi-a-r-rahman/

[arr] A.R. Rahman Tour to Feature ‘New Technologies’
A.R. Rahman Tour to Feature ‘New Technologies’ By LISA TSERING indiawest.com April 22, 2010 01:38:00 PM In a unique East-West collaboration, music maestro A.R. Rahman has joined hands with celebrated Hollywood creative director Amy Tinkham for this summer’s “A.R. Rahman Jai Ho Concert: The Journey Home World Tour.” “The concert tour will be a theatrical experience that will blend new technologies with powerful dance arrangements and acrobatics,” said Tinkham, who is best known for creating live musical concerts for pop music icons such as Britney Spears, the Backstreet Boys and Mariah Carey, and spectacles for Ringling Bros. and Barnum Bailey. Speaking at a press conference in New York City April 19, she added, “The concert will keep intact the heritage and traditions of India with a new modern presentation. The show will feature changing sets, large images on LED screens and a spectacular cast of musicians and dancers from across the globe.” The logistics of the two-and-a-half-hour shows are staggering, something that has never been attempted by an Indian artist, said a spokesperson. Promoted as a “true road tour,” the concerts will entail 21 days of intensive production rehearsals on an entire touring mock set-up of lights, sound, sets, and special effects. The final touring production will be a mammoth undertaking never seen in the Bollywood sphere, comprising seven 53-foot air trailers, with six touring coaches and one star coach ferrying Rahman’s 75-person entourage. Although Rahman has performed fusion-oriented shows before, such as a 2006 extravaganza at the Hollywood Bowl and a show with the London Philharmonic as part of the Southbank Centre’s Alchemy Festival in London April 7, the “Jai Ho” tour will be an unabashed celebration of the best of his Indian scores, from 1992’s “Roja” all the way to “Slumdog Millionaire.” “I put on the table what I want in the show,” Rahman told Variety. “It’s a marriage of two worlds. It will be very exciting even for those who’ve seen the performances before.” Later, speaking to the Associated Press, Rahman elaborated: “We’ve seen Indian shows where stars would come and lip-sync on a song ... and they would dance and audiences wanted that stuff,” he told the AP. “Here, we have the real stars of music, and the whole vision of the whole staging of the songs (with) segments of spirituality and celebration and festival, all these things, (and) love.” India-West’s query to Rahman was not answered by press time. The tour will hit 20 cities, starting in New York June 11, and hitting the Oakland, Calif., Oracle Arena June 26 and the Forum in Los Angeles June 27. Rahman will perform in Paris, Amsterdam and Zurich before wrapping up the tour in London July 25. The concert series has been produced by Deepak Gattani of Rapport Productions, a concert management company based in Mumbai. “It will be blend of East and West, from Bharatnatyam to pop and tap dance,” Gattani said in a taped announcement. The press conference, held at K Lounge in New York City, was also attended by leading local promoters including Monty Syed from Chicago; Paul Singh from San Francisco; Deepak Mehta from Los Angeles; Victor Abraham from Dallas; Moid Khan from Houston; Deepak Rajput from Detroit; and Shishir Misra, who is the promoter of the shows in New York, New Jersey and Washington, D.C. [arr] Different approaches to listen to a new ARR album
Friends, It is that time when a new album from our boss is releasing. Makes me get into a reflective mood in terms of how do I listen to a new album from ARR. I primarily can think of 3 approaches/patterns under which I listen to a new album. Let me know what you guys think. Approach 1: Take the album listen to all the songs at one stretch and then repeat the same process. Advantage I found of this is that you listen to all the songs at one shot, but disadvantage is that first 2-3 times I feel completely lost. I follow this pattern a lot. Approach 2: Take one song at a time, listen to it a few times and then only move to the next song. This I rarely follow. Advantage is, it helps you internalize one song at a time. But disadvantage is it takes lot of patience and effort ! Approach 3: Listen to entire album once, pick the ones that stand out right away and stray towards them. I find this most suitable approach and I easily follow this path. But, downside is that I naturally tend to neglect some songs and never truly enjoy them unless I revisit the album later. This is most preferred approach for me. So guys, what do you think ? I am curious to know how others do this. Ram

I don't know how the aam junta is gonna react to this album. I'm yet to come in terms with the songs. Lot of things happening here. Its a very hardcore album from our Boss. The first interlude from Thok de Dilli is mesmerizing stuff. Ranjha Ranjha is my current fav...has some hypnotising feel to it. Khili Re is sweet saccharine stuff, while Beera Beera is a lot of fun...Kata Kata also sounds lot of fun, I'm yet to have a full grasp on the song though...Behne De is one powerful song...The last I heard such a song was frm Mani-ARR combo Minnale song frm May Madam. Such is the sadness within the song. The arrangements are mind blowing in all the songs. Its a very complex album from our Boss, and from the songs I get a feeling this is gonna b one hell of a movie. The promo is also very intriguing. [arr] CD Booklet and lyrics
The booklet seems to suggest that Khilli re will be pictured on Vikram and Ash (three very interesting stills there including the ones with ARB dancing- the ones that have been on the internet for a long time now). Kata Kata looks big too in keeping with the articles regarding 500+ dancers etc. It looks like it's Raavan's sister(Surpanakha played by Priyamani)'s wedding. Colourful. Behene de has the Bachchans - extremely interesting stills. Apparently, Bollywood Hungama have the video of the song already and will put it up on their website in the coming days. Ranjha Ranjha with the Bachchans again. Thok de and Beera is with AB only. The booklet is an absolute treat. How I wish I could understand the lyrics. Can some kid soul please give a gist as to what each song is trying to convey? Especially Behene De. Would be very grateful!
[arr] Raavan - Superb!!! Excellent!! Unbelievable!
Superb!!! Excellent!! Unbelievable! It is nothing that I could have expected from our man, but that is his espeiciality that he gives me exactly what I can't even think of, and it is working great. That's what makes him The composer and me The listener and his fan. -- My fav is Behne De. In this the sounds are so deep and all-encompassing as if they are arriving from some other planet, drowning you from all sides. You don't realize whether it is something coming out of your speakers, or it is more likely live sounds coming from walls and roofs and floors. It has the mood that it could be the Taandav number. So motivating, so energetic. Even Lagaan's baar baar ha sounds like scout boy's bathroom song in comparison with it. The only thing lacking i feel is in voice. voice is slightly husky and is in a shorter range that doesn't do justice with the mood of the song which should have on higher pitch and wider range. Seems wrong choice of singer. Sukhwinder would have done miracle in this song with his voice range and all-out ways. Thok de Gilli seems situational so its effect will be seen with the visuals and storyline. sound arrangement is pleasantly heavy here also. Ranjha is interesting. Female voice goes miles ahead by that CHEWING of words that bring such a unique feel that male voice doesn't measure up. I wonder why this difference is kept? to match the screen accents of actor/ actresses? or is it the female voice who could come up with this chewing twisted voice and ARR retained it, and male voice remained flat without nuances. Seems wrong choice of male singer. Khili re is indeed soothing enough, but frankly, ARR has given many-many much better soft and sweet song. It slightly lacks in voice. Voice is not emotional enough, as was in Marudhani or in Chupke Se (Sathiya) or in Kal nahi tha jo wo hai aaj kya (vishwavidhata). And flow here is noticeably slow - may be in comparison with other fast tracked songs. btw, starting music and beats in Khili re made me wonder whether it is Ek Suraj nikla tha - dil se re song starting. Kata Kata also has similar vibrating sound but seems there are less instruments in Kata Kata, or may be there are one fast and one slow beat used repeatedly, so one can make out that it is sound from the speakers. tribal accent has been well rendered by female voice. Closing crescendo is lovely. Beera and Kata sound to have similar beats and style. If one hears both the songs back to back, it will be difficult to notice when one song ends and when other one starts. or may be, as we hear more, it becomes clear what differences they are having. Beera has less variety than Kata. -- lyrics are great and plentiful and meaningful. pronunciation also seem good enough here, that was my complain in many previous albums of our man that pronunciations were unclear or even wrong. Only in Thok de gilli, music somewhere becomes louder so drowning the voice and making it difficult to make out what is being said. Other songs have more clear spoken words. D6 has been fav of many, but that still had predictability. Here is entirely unpredictable things in Raavan. It is so complex. -- Rawat

[arr] Musicaloud reviews Raavan - 9/10
http://www.musicaloud.com/2010/04/23/raavan-music-review/ Raavan shows promises right from the word go, starting with the bouncy Beera, the mix of Indian and African folk elements in the orchestration forming a perfect combo. And Vijay Prakash does a fab job of the rendition alongside newcomer Mustafa Kutoane and Keerthi Sagathia, with Rahman making the occasional appearance in the background. Mustafa seems to be an African singer from his voice and style. Nice debut anyways. Things take a somber, yet better, turn with Behene De. The faint resemblance in tune with some older Rahman tunes like Satrangi Re is totally forgotten in the beauty of the instrumentation and the spot-on vocals by Karthik and Mohammad Irfan. It is rather unfortunate that Karthik hasn't been able to build a place in Bollywood in spite of having sung quite a few good tracks for Rahman. Of course if he keeps getting such beauties from Rahman himself it doesn't really matter! :) Thok De Killi is the only slightly uninteresting fare in the whole lot. In spite of Sukhwinder Singh's high energy vocals (supported by another newbie by name Am'Nico) and barring Rahman's clever instrumental additions in places, the song is largely tedious. The previous dip is more than compensated with the awesome Sufi-electronic fusion in Ranjha Ranjha. I have especially been caught on by the instrumentation in the initial one minute. The breezy processed humming of Anuradha Sriram is such a perfect fit for the overall mood! There is obviously no need to comment on the singing by Rekha Bharadwaj and Javed Ali. After a break Reena Bhardwaj returns to sing for ARR the beautiful Khilli Re. There is every chance given the semi classical nature of the song that Khilli Re will not cut ice with a lot of listeners, but it is in such songs that I have felt Rahman's master class truly gets demonstrated, and to me this is the pick of the album. I loved the brief Chinese violin accompaniment towards the end (3:11 3:22). As it started, Raavan ends with another lively song, Kata Kata, a heavy-on-percussion track. Being right down their alley, Ila Arun and Sapna Awasthi handle the folksy track with ease with good support from Kunal Ganjawala and a host of other singers. Rahman may have grown by leaps and bounds over the years, working with some of the biggest names all over India and outside, but his finest scores still continue to be reserved for one person, Mani Ratnam. And for good reason too, considering the way Mani Ratnam has treated each of those songs in his movies. Eagerly waiting for Raavan's videos now! Music Aloud Rating: 9/10 Recommended tracks: Khilli Re, Behene De, Ranjha Ranjha

Re: [arr] CD Booklet and lyrics
1) Beera Beera talks about the guy Beera. ( on abhishek bachan) 2) Behene De is the guy in love ( probably Ravan's love for Sita) 3) Gilli talks about the beauty that Sita is. 4) Ranjha is a romantic number . 5) Khilli re is Sita singing with flowers and trees around her waiting for her love to return ( probably before the kidnap) 6) Kata Kata bechara depicts a guy getting married. Its his last day being single. Vikram's marriage to ash. -- www.gomzyphotography.com

RE: [arr] Qiestiond about sound quality in Raavan.........
The cd quality is amazing. T SERIES have made amends for that Blue debacle. Sent from my Nokia phone -Original Message- From: AJ Sent: 24:04:2010 7.05.27 am Subject: [arr] Qiestiond about sound quality in Raavan. For those lucky enough to have the Raavan CD already, could you please comment on the sound quality of the CD? After what happened with Blue last time and all the sound quality issues we had with that album, does Raavan live up to our expectations of sound quality for an ARR album? Please comment on this..I'm nervous about it after what happened with Blue!
[arr] Raavan delivers as expected - Review by Joginder Tuteja (Indiafm)
http://www.bollywoodhungama.com/movies/musicreview/14148/index.html By Joginder Tuteja, April 24, 2010 - 09:11 IST EXPECTATIONS Expectations? Now either one can come up with 50 statements detailing the expectations that one has from the music of this film which brings together Mani Rathnam, A.R. Rahman, Gulzar, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan. Or instead, one can just state that it would be nothing less than sacrilege for this team to present listeners with something which is less than being excellent. The choice, it at all there ever was, is non-existent. So without much ado, let's play on one of the most anticipated albums of the year and check out what this elite team has to offer. Write your own music review of RaavanMUSIC It's a folksy-tribal beginning to 'Beera Beera' which appears to be the introduction song of the character played by Abhishek Bachchan Raavan. In a routine scenario a song belonging to this genre would have immediately fallen into Sukhwinder Singh's lap. However, expect Rahman to do something different in each of his outings as he instead ropes in Kirti Sagathia and Vijay Prakash to come up with a cracker of a song which is a chartbuster in the first 60 seconds itself. Whether it's the lyrics, a massive orchestra, vociferous rendition by both the singers, or the overall spirit that 'Beera' carries, there is no looking back once one moves ahead in the album after this quick 3 minutes outing. var zflag_nid=585; var zflag_cid=829; var zflag_sid=36; var zflag_width=300; var zflag_height=250; var zflag_sz=9; on error resume next p0=IsObject(CreateObject(ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash.5)) if(p0 What follows next is relatively subtle, in fact almost oriental in appeal, as a beautiful amalgamation of different sounds come together to make 'Behene De'. Once Karthik comes on scene behind the mike, it is crystal clear that 'Behene De' has a trademark A.R. Rahman stamp all over it. The song sees many variations when it comes to its flow right through its six minutes duration as Karthik sings for a character which has a desire to break free and live life on its own terms. Situational, yet the kind of song which should make a very good impression on screen. However, for those who were looking at yet another catchy number, there is 'Thok De Killi' which instantly reminds one of the spirited encounter that listeners had in Yuva. Sukhwinder Singh puts all stops as he brings in his characteristic singing style that differentiates him from the rest. Watch out for Gulzar's lyrics here, they are truly different and something that one has never heard before in a Hindi film parlance. Rahman too just lets himself loose in making this number orchestra heavy and ensures that audience would be glued to screen once this fast paced song plays in all its fervour. Just when one had thought that this team had reached its peak with 'Thok De Killi' comes 'Ranjha Ranjha'. A number which is not just the best in the album (or even the best of the month), 'Ranjha Ranjha' will clearly stand out as one of the best that 2010 had to offer this year. Clearly, even Subhash Ghai would be proud of this song which reminds one of many a terrific song that his Taal has boasted of years back. This song by the trio of Rekha Bhardwaj, Javed Ali and Anuradha Sriram is a killer to say the least and has all in it to reach the top of the charts within a fortnight of the release. With a folksy base to it, 'Ranjha Ranjha' is energetic, sensual and exciting. Reena Bhardwaj, who has sung primarily with Rahman during her limited singing career so far, is sweetness personified in 'Khilli Re' where she gets an opportunity to go solo. Presumably picturised on Aishwarya Rai, the genre of the song may limit its popularity due to its situational appeal but isn't a bad fit at all in the album. A poetic track which yet again clearly belongs to Rahman's background, 'Khilli Re' is almost devotional in appeal and is extremely soothing in appeal, hence creating a good balance in the album. The ending of the album is vociferous though with a grand chorus coming together to sing 'Kata Kata'. A song which is about a man getting married and a bunch of friends teasing him on his last night of bachelorhood, 'Kata Kata' sees Ila Arun, Sapna Awasthi and Kunal Ganjawala coming together. In a way, the song is an antithesis of Rahman's first big hit, 'Rukmani Rukmani' [Roja] which was about an interaction amongst friends post the first night. A good situational track which should find good prominence coming its way if the film succeeds at the box office. OVERALL Raavan delivers as expected. Now that's a good sign in itself since to begin with, the expectations were huge in any case. There are number of gems in the album, most notably being 'Ranjha Ranjha', 'Beera Beera' and 'Thok De Killi'. Go for it, this one is not to be missed as it has Rahman coming up with
