No need for RTI. There was a GoI press release about this which mentions

There's more work (lyrics by Mehboob, video with Bharat Bala...) than just
composing the song. ARR is performing at the opening ceremony as well. We do
not know the full extent of his involvement. But c'mon! Given all his charity
work would you think that he would overcharge for something like this?

The media is on a witch-hunt right now so it's convenient for them to publish
whatever they want. Don't fan the flames. It's amazing how much of the
criticism about the Games has now been focused solely on the music.

A few
weeks ago when a journalist angrily questioned the delay with releasing the
song, I defended her right to ask the question. At that time it seemed that the
press was asking hard questions because it mattered and not because of TRP
ratings. Now I see it's a facade since they're all after masala stuff to sell.
The IBNLive hack-job masquerading as an article doesn't even have an author

Don't make this an issue despite how ugly it looks. Ignore it. Be civil and
diplomatic if you're correcting friends who've been misled by the articles. The

And for the devious side in you...
When people have already formed a misguided opinion it's hard to make them
change if you point facts directly. Use satire to make them think about how
ludicrous it is. We already

flop because it was not easily available in India and could be obtained only by
mail order from Germany. Extending that thought here are some tweet-lines:

[arr] 127 Hours - Initial reviews from Telluride Film festival.

2010-09-04 Thread Vinod Raju
snip
Boyle reteams with A.R. Rahman, who won two Academy Awards for their last
collaboration (Slumdog Millionaire). Rahman's score for 127 Hours is more
involved in the moments before and after Ralston became stuck in the canyon. I
almost wish there were more of it, but it seems Boyle chose to play the
dramatic moments more naturalistic (which is understandable).

Film Rating: 9.5 out of 10

Technically, Boyle is assisted by exemplary cinematography credited to both
Enrique Chediak and Anthony Dod Mantle. A.R. Rahman, who famously collaborated
with Boyle on Slumdog, is back for a second go around with new songs and
compositions that eloquently fit the mood (most appear to feature Dido in the
vocals). Rahaman is also pitch perfect in his score for the film's most
dramatic moment, helping Boyle create the unexpectedly uplifting conclusion.
All three will be key players in their categories as awards season progresses.

[arr] I too am missing ARR's semiclassical/sufi numbers

2010-09-04 Thread AJ
This is not a post to complain or gripe. As much as I'm enjoying ARR's
international music of late, I sure wish he'd compose for a film again with
better scope for more traditional Indian semi classical music and Sufi music.
Of course, in Delhi 6, we heard quite a bit of folk/semi classical/Sufi music
and that's the last album we heard ARR in those genres. When will be the next
film we hear ARR compose such type of music? I don't know. Does anyone know?

I can truly understand members missing that type of music from ARR, which he
composes more infrequently these days. It's no reason to dismiss ARR's music
of today, which is more techno and rock/guitar oriented in general. The Indian
soul is not missing in ARR's music of today, but the style and structure are a
lot more Western and international than what we used to hear earlier this
decade and before. This is what I feel some people are talking about when
comparing ARR of the past vs. ARR of the present and I can certainly relate to
that.

Once again, let me reiterateRahman's music to me is about
explorationdifferent musical directions and moving away from familiarity at
times with experimenting. In that vein, I appreciate the artist side of
Rahman, whose music is often freely evolving and shifting, very much in sync
with ARR's need to maintain a stream of creative inspiration and creative
movement. For ARR, creative stagnation and only playing it safe and familiar
is worse than risking alienating traditional listeners. That is a point we
must understand.

Lost to the world
Has India’s favourite music composer moved on to a bigger, global platform?
Chandrima.Pal

Posted On Saturday, September 04, 2010 at 08:55:19 PM

From Internet blogs to the denizens of Delhi’s South Block, everyone is
splitting hair over his compositions. But the man behind it all is ensconced in
his Chennai studio, unfazed by the furore around him. Like the proverbial eye
of
the storm.

For A R Rahman, these are the best of times, the worst of times. His art is at
its most eclectic, garnering international acclaim heralding him as one of the
world’s best. In his own country detractors are declaring that he has lost his
touch. He is buying a five-acre plot in Los Angeles to set up his production
facility with sound engineer Resul Pookutty. He is also being accused of being
indifferent, aloof to his Bollywood projects, delaying them and churning out
music that often stumps listeners. With every milestone in the West, Rahman
seems to move a step away from home.

His fiercest critics are ironically in the industry that has given him his
biggest successes — until of course Slumdog. The Hindi film fraternity has
always had an uneasy relationship with Rahman, who is still god down south.
Many
in Bollywood find it hard to accept his artistic ways – he remains in Chennai,
works mostly at night, has his own creative yardsticks for choosing projects
and
delivers only when he is ready. Some feel his best is behind him, others feel
he is constantly breaking new ground.

“Given his style of functioning and his inaccessibility,” says trade expert
Amod
Mehra, “Bollywood always had a problem working with him.” Rahman has never made
any excuses for the way he functions. And his studio can seem forbidding, or
inspiring.

“There is a divine energy there,” says Subhash Ghai, who has shared an
emotional
bond with the composer since his Shikhar days. “It is not your usual
sharaab-kebab kind of atmosphere that you encounter in most Mumbai studios.”
Ghajini-producer Madhu Mantena, who has worked closely with Rahman since
Rangeela, too says watching the maestro in his studio is like entering a very
sacred space.
CONSPIRACY THEORIES
But Rahman’s inaccessibility – which critics say has increased post his
international-success – has not helped.

“If you are a newbie,” says a producer who has met the maestro and is still
waiting for his verdict on his proposal. “You have to make at least 10 trips to
his studio to discuss your project with him. Unlike other music composers,
money
is no criteria for him. There is no saying why or when he will pick one project
over the other,” the producer adds.

“Now he is zipping around the world,” rues an ad filmmaker who is still waiting
for a meeting, “it is almost impossible for one to get his time and consent.”
Rubbishing these as conspiracy theories, Mantena points out that Rahman has
worked with several newcomers including Abbas Tyrewala, whose Jaane Tu... he
had
accepted way before Aamir Khan came into the picture.

“Besides, he is so dedicated to his work that each song probably goes through
more changes than the script itself,” Mantena reveals, agreeing with other
insiders like Ram Gopal Varma. “No matter how pressured he is, Rahman will
never let a tune pass until he is happy about it.”

On the flip side, that can translate into nail-biting moments for the
always-in-a-tearing-hurry Bollywood producer. Thus, the notion that Rahman is
delaying projects.

Mantena denies the maestro kept him waiting for months for the title track for
his latest, Jhootha Hi Sahi. “There are nine songs and the time taken was the
same as any other album,” the producer says.

There were also rumours that the Jodhaa Akbar music launch was delayed because
the soundtrack was not ready, though the label and the production house denied
it. The Commonwealth Games theme took six months, and then it was back to the
drawing board after the organising committee wanted Rahman to make changes.

“A single failure does not bring anyone down, not at least Rahman, who still
has
the mass with him,” says Mehra, referring to the Commonwealth controversy.
“However, Rahman has not been showing his best elements on his recent works,”
he
adds.

“You cannot judge Rahman on the basis of one song,” says sitar maestro Pandit
Kartick Kumar, who was featured in Rahman and Bharat Bala’s Jana Gana Mana
project. Pandit Kumar worked with Pandit Ravi Shankar during Asiad ’82, when
the
sitar legend composed the then-hugely popular Swagatham. “People have been
comparing that tune to what Rahman has created. It is not fair to compare a
classic with a more contemporary track,” Pandit Kumar says. “But, yes, maybe
Rahman should not have sung the song himself. Just because his Vande Mataram
clicked, does not mean he can bring the same energy to every song he lends

[arr] cwg case is like a venomous beast

2010-09-04 Thread Raghu
Its kind of interesting to see how things turned out in cwg case..
When the whole media is against CWG organization, It is ARR
who came to their rescue, it is He who specially addressed
the press meet supporting the CWG committe saying that they
have been working hard..lot of hard work is going into it and
be positive and be supportive to them.
And now the CWG and the media itself is going against ARR
accusing him of not giving a shakira material, about the money
and went to such an extent questiioning ARR's commitment.
Not showing gratitude is one thing but going after ARR calling him
names is totally uncalled for..
How are they comparing soccer to these games?
Flavor of soccer is completely different from swimming badminton.
They will expect ARR to compose like a Shakira even for
a World Chess championship.

There's more work (lyrics by Mehboob, video with Bharat Bala...) than just
composing the song. ARR is performing at the opening ceremony as well. We do
not know the full extent of his involvement. But c'mon! Given all his
charity work would you think that he would overcharge for something like
  this?

The media is on a witch-hunt right now so it's convenient for them to
publish whatever they want. Don't fan the flames. It's amazing how much of
the criticism about the Games has now been focused solely on the music.

A few weeks ago when a journalist angrily questioned the delay with

it seemed that the press was asking hard questions because it mattered and

Don't make this an issue despite how ugly it looks. Ignore it. Be civil and
diplomatic if you're correcting friends who've been misled by the articles.
The media will stop when there isn't enough interest in it.

And for the devious side in you...
When people have already formed a misguided opinion it's hard to make them
change if you point facts directly. Use satire to make them think about how
ludicrous it is. We already know about the awesome conclusion by IBNLive
that the film score to Fire was a flop because it was not easily available
in India and could be obtained only by mail order from Germany. Extending
that thought here are some tweet-lines:

 - IBNLive says Mughal-e-Azam is a flop because it is not available in
 Sanskrit dubbing.
 - V.K. Malhotra doesn't like Australia's 2006 Commonwealth Games song
either- Their song is slower than Rahman's. They should have used
  Shakira.
 - V.K Malhotra also does not like coconut chutney. Rediff reports that
Kerala is angry when he asked for mint chutney instead.
 - TimesOfIndia research shows that Waka Waka is more popular than Jana
Gana Mana based on downloads. Please participate in the poll for changing
 the national anthem.
 - Calcutta Telegraph breaking news-- Sports minister Shanawaz Hussain
wants Rabindranath Tagore grand-daughter to update national anthem since
  it
is too slow. There is not enough Shakira in it.
 - Indian media secures top prize in transparency and integrity awards
U2CanBJournoWorld 2010. Congratulate them! Only one country participated
since the others refused to pay the entry fee to host nation, India.

[arr] Re: Namakame.....is the only song I love in Komaram Puli

2010-09-04 Thread Santosh
Namakame is about the best song I have heard from ARR in such a long time now.
The raagam seems to be Anandha Bhairavi (dont bash me if i am wrong). Remember
the Premier ad from ARR from 20 years back...same scale I think.
ARR is the only one to compose such wonderful carnatic music based songs.
Innisai alapedai from Varalaaru and the recent Omana penne nadhasvaram ending
from VTV belong to this class of music from ARR.

Other than these rare offerings from him, his songs have gone down the drain
for quite a long time now.

With respect to the contradictory taste in this thread, it's obvious choice
between extreme classy carnatic stuff versus very ordinary stuff. If someone
finds Anandha Bhairavi or a Hindolam DRAGGY, is it the problem with the scale
or with the perceiver ? :-)

So so sad that fans like AJ and me loving songs like Namakame need to wait for
years to get a golden songs like these from ARR.

PLEAD TO ARR - there is no one else who can compose this breed of music. Please
pay more attention to fans like us. Your music from your Jingle days and the
90s were purely around the carnatic expertise in you...why dont you come back
to this realm???

[arr] A R Rahman’s Gujarat theme song has not been given the publicity that it deserves

2010-09-04 Thread mmykhel

Ode to Gujarat still in official closet
A R Rahman’s Gujarat theme song has not been given the publicity that it
deserves
Paul John | TNN

Ahmedabad: Is A R Rahman’s ode to Gujarat going unheard in the state it was
meant for? Four months after the composition, “Jay Jay Garvi Gujarat” was first
played, there has been no encore at any state function.
The Gujarat theme song was composed for the Swarnim Jayanti celebrations
marking 50 years of the state’s formation on May 1. Rahman was reportedly paid
a fee running into crores.
But, strangely enough,
there has been little attempt to promote the song. Even chief minister Narendra
Modi’s blog, which was all praise for the ‘Khushboo Gujarat ki’ tourism promos
— featuring Amitabh Bachchan as Gujarat’s brand ambassador — makes no mention
of it.
The only official reference
to the song can be found on the Swarnim Gujarat celebrations website, which has
an obscure link to the song. There is also a YouTube link, which has already
got 20,656 hits in the last three months.
Why underplay Rahman’s composition? Swarnim Gujarat organising committee
chairman I K Jadeja denies this and says that the marketing rights for the song
are yet to be assigned to an agency. “The decision is pending with the state
government. It was played once in public during the May 1 celebrations and then
there have been no major Swarnim Gujarat celebrations in the state,” he adds.
Interestingly, Rahman has a strong connection with Gujarat. The maestro’s
wife Saira Banu belongs to Kutch. Apparently, it was at a Sufi shrine here that
Rahman’s mother first saw Saira praying. The match was fixed soon thereafter.
“Jay Jay Garvi Gujarat” was originally written by noted Gujarati poet,
Narmad. Other Gujarati writers who have contributed to this song are Dilip
Rawal, Ankit
Trivedi, Sairam Dave and Chiragh Tripathi.
There is a Hindi version as well which has been written by Prasoon Joshi.
Also in the works is a music video, which is being directed by Rahman’s
long-time associate Bharat Bala. An interesting aspect about the song is the
way Rahman has used Gujarati instruments like the rare Kutchi flute, Jodiya
Pava, in the composition.
Incidentally, another Rahman number, “Jiyo Utho Badho Jeeto”, seems to be
attracting some controversy. There are reports that the Commonwealth Games
theme song has failed to enthuse the organizers in Delhi, with many claiming
that it lacks “punch”. There have been unfavourable comparisons with “Waka
Waka”, the hip-swaying Shakira number for the football world cup. Despite all
the talk, “Jiyo” has already got almost 1.5 lakh hits on YouTube.

[arr] 127 Hours reviews from Telluride

2010-09-04 Thread Ramesh R
Reviews are in from the premiere of 127 Hours at Telluride film festival-

Technically, Boyle is assisted by exemplary cinematography credited to both
Enrique Chediak and Anthony Dod Mantle. A.R. Rahman, who famously collaborated
with Boyle on Slumdog, is back for a second go around with new songs and
compositions that eloquently fit the mood (most appear to feature Dido in the
vocals). Rahaman is also pitch perfect in his score for the film's most
dramatic moment, helping Boyle create the unexpectedly uplifting conclusion.
All three will be key players in their categories as awards season progresses.

http://www.hitfix.com/blogs/awards-campaign-2009/posts/telluride-danny-boyles-127-hours-is-a-visceral-and-uplifting-experience

Boyle reteams with A.R. Rahman, who won two Academy Awards for their last
collaboration (Slumdog Millionaire). Rahman’s score for 127 Hours is more
involved in the moments before and after Ralston became stuck in the canyon. I
almost wish there were more of it, but it seems Boyle chose to play the
dramatic moments more naturalistic (which is understandable).

come up with a bilingual album in Spanish and Hindi?
Bilingual, I think, is what makes an album more eclectic. Due to the
collaborations and the languages, and also it is kind of fun to put one
language to compete against the other. So it kind of creates this internal
competition, which I think pushed the album.

Would you know of any singer in India with whom you'd ever think of cutting
an album with?
Umm As far as an

Lost to the world
Has India’s favourite music composer moved on to a bigger, global platform?
Chandrima.Pal

Many in Bollywood find it hard to accept his artistic ways – he remains in
Chennai, works mostly at night, has his own creative yardsticks for choosing
projects and delivers only when he is ready. Some feel his best is behind him,
others feel he is constantly breaking new ground.

“Given his style of functioning and his inaccessibility,” says trade expert
Amod
Mehra, “Bollywood always had a problem working with him.” Rahman has never
made
any excuses for the way he functions.

This group has seen a lot of disagreements and some bickering of late,
which has raised some heat around here. Whether we agree or disagree, like a
song or album or not, like ARR of yesterday vs. ARR of today, even annoyed
with one another, one thing is for certain: We all love ARR and that's why
 we're here.

ARR Fans Stand United Always! We're not just his fans, but also his
 followers and admirers too.
