I guess, the feeling is similar to human nature/behavior where one always
remember ones childhood days no matter how complaining one had been during
those
days and how understanding one is at present time of life.

But this is just what I guess.

True Roshan... Nostalgia is the main reason why we all keep saying the past was
always better

In the case of our Boss if he had kept on doing the same kind of stuff he used
to do in the 90's he wudn't have won the Oscar/Grammy etc.. ARR is Genius its
we
people who needs to grow

but still at times i wish if he cud repeat a 'Puthiya Mugam' or 'Duet' - well
nostalgic again :P

Guysthe other music director is additional mixer. Just the way
Ranjit Barot and few others collaborated with Rahman. The whole composition is
credited to Rahman only. That's the reason we did not see any other composer's
name on the front cover of the album.

BTW these songs were composed by neither. They are Indian folk songs which have
been sung for ages in certain parts of the country. It was Raguvir Yadav who
suggested these songs to Rakesh Mehra. He then used Rajat Dholakia to record
them with Prasoon adding some of his own lyrics. ARR then remixed (I hate to
use it) them to bring out the magic in these songs.
It is such a welcome change to see people being inspired from their own culture
and country rather than lifting some unknown song and not crediting it. The
team used the song and they gave credit where deserved and should now get all
the credit they deserve.

- It would still have been great if we could track down the composer of these
songs. I think it will be virtually impossible as these folk songs might be
centuries old.

Film Music

Hey man,
Its good to see you write after a long time.
And you've come with a very sensitive issue, which if taken even
slightly wrongly, may bring a storm in the group.
So, I'll write carefully, as follows:

There was a time when whatever A R Rahman composed, became
contemporary music. He defined the contemporary music and others
merely followed him. Especially in south, north was not any exception
as well.

Times have changed now, so many young music composers have evolved
and sometimes its hard to distinguish the styles especially because
almost everyone has followed ARR in some manner. And everyone is
copying world music equally well.

Also, we are exposed to American pop/rap more than we ever were.
Copying their beats or making same kind of music has become a fashion.

Now, if you follow very carefully the time between 2000 and 2006, how
successfull do you think ARR's music was as compared to old days.
The only reason is that ARR was still composing his kind of music but
rest of country was more intrested in listening all the american crap
which was wraped nicely in indian style by our very talented copycats.

If you take the example of Guru Dutt, we all know he was a legendary
director, perhaps the best we ever had after Satayjeet Ray (Mani
Ratnam in recent times). He followed his own path, his own unique
style and made movies which were way ahead of their time.
Do you think he was considered legendary, when he was alive?
No.
Do you think he lived a happy and peacefull life?
No.
At the last days of his career, he had to beg small rolls (side
rolls/supporting rolls) to survive. He was so afraid of making a flop
movie that he had to make a movie shadow-directed by his assistant
(Sahib biwi aur gulam). Why?
Because he followed his own style, his own path.
Did our great ancesstors recognize his legendary work while he was
alive?
No.
He became a legend after his death.

Don't you think same could not happen to ARR?
Yes, I believe it could.
If ARR had not changed his style at right time, he would have ended
in same way. And after 20 years our kids would be saying, ARR was a
great music composer, a legendary MD.

Guys, I have seen my friends saying ARR is the greatest music
composer in world when they listened 'Pappu can't dance', 'Shano
Shano', or 'Pathsala'. which all had cotemporary kindish music.
These are the same guys who used to tell me how crap my music choice
was when I used to listen to Zubeidaa, Bose or Nayak or Love you
hamesha. which all had uniqe ARR style.

How many of your friends appriciate Jodhaa Akbar?

So its all surviving instincts. ARR has to do it.
And we should feel lucky because he is doing it. Because if he stays
commercially successfull, he will surely compose an ADA, a JODHAA
AKBAR every once in a while.

I am sorry if I am wrong or if I don't make any sense or if I've got
it compeletly wrong way. But that's how I feel.

Pravinder.

[arr] Is AR Rahman's music becoming more of a contemporary Hindi Film Music

2008-11-29 Thread Abhimanyu Rana
Hello Everyone,

My apologies, in case I am wrong, but I feel AR Rahman's music is now shifting
to more of the contemporary Hindi film music. Now I do barely listen to the
drums/thumps/time-sliced beats/female harmonies and all. I am yet to explore
fully the Yuvraaj and Ghajini music scores, though their promos and JTYJN seems
to be composed with a more contemporary Hindi music audience. Ada is an
exception as I believe it has been composed over the years, when the boss was
still having a unique blend of music.

Shift to a more contemporary music wears my heart out as I always refered to AR
Rahman as being a unique sound of music. What's your say on this?

OR see the table below
Its based on statistics ...and nothing else

This success is sweeter and greater when we realize that,

99% of the other artists are from west, where piracy of tracks are very less
unlike india !!!
Language matters. We listen english music a lot, but an english guy rarely
listens hindi/tamil !!! Rahman is on the less priviledged side as other's
produce mostly english music.
A R R is a one man army unlike Beatles  and AC/DC
His music only speaks for him.
The variety (number of genres, ambience, period musicals, etc) that ARR handled
is far more than any other artist in the world
Courage for experimentation, like delivering chinese, karnatic classical,
hindustaani, Qawwaali, and western music at the same time.. Year 2004 is the
best example
And above all, he is an INDIAN !!!

[arr] Jodhaa Akbar meets the same fate?

2008-02-18 Thread Abhimanyu Rana
I have been observing this for more than a decade now - everyone appreciates
the music, the movie, the concept and so on; but when it comes to box-office
collections - things fail to impress miserably.

I think the same will happen to Jodhaa Akbar - the movie will not be able to
recover the costs put in. Though it will continue to remain with the fans
forever, but the end result to the public at large will be - loser.

I think the major problems over the years has been - unable to determine the
target audience and then failing to connect to them. The best example to look
forward is Mr. Aamir Khan. He targets a specific audience, and then relates the
movie with them.

What do you guys say?

Re: [arr] [Jodha Akbar - After watching 2nd time] - BGM of life time

2008-02-18 Thread Abhimanyu Rana
Hey Man,

You sound amazing. Seems, the experiences will last lifetime.I am still drooled
over the music of the movie, but yes, I'll watch on the computer as soon as the
original DVD is out. That way, I'll have access to all the background music
scores. By the way, in case you do not know - the movie has been delayed by
around 50 days, as AR Rahman wanted to give some special treatment on the
background music score.

Pravinder Sheoran <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Hi
All,
I watched the movie second time with perhaps the worst audience ever.
They did not have any respect for history or director or actors or
 music director.
Many people were involved in making comments on serious scenes, making
fun of songs and all that.
But it also gave me a chance to see the real effect of Direction and
 music direction.
I still can not forget when Khwaja Mere Khwaja song came all the
audience was stuck to their seats.
While "Azim-o-shan shehanshah" came audience was shocked and the
effect of the song was so hard on them that none of those fun making
guys even moved from their seats till the movie finished.

 Coming to the BGM now:
Many things go unnoticed when you see the movie first time but second
 time makes it crystal clear.
Rahman Saab has outdone himself and the background score of Jodhaa
Akbar is perhaps the best of all his work till date; and i am sure
will always be remembered as a landmark and will be an inspiration to
millions of other composers. A few things about BGM:

 1. SITAR pieces: Oh my god, i have not listened to anything like this
before. I think some Raga is played on Sitar many times in the movie.
Whenever its played it takes your breath away. I think after Naushad
Saab no one has used Sitar in such magnificent way. If Naushad Saab
was alive, he surely would have praised ARR with 1000 words.

 2. ARABIC pieces: ARR Sir, i do not know if God exists or not but when
i listened your Arabic instrumental pieces in JA, i surely felt God
somewhere near me. How can you use almost every instrument with such a
perfection. Oh god those divine tunes will haunt me forever.

 3. Jashn-e-bahara vocals and instrumentals: I have started liking the
song and singer 100 times more than before since i have heard that
vocals only piece. You could feel the pain in the voice. You can feel
love in the air whenever the instruments of the song start.

 4. Man mohana: Remember the ending of the song, the slow paced vocals,
those are used at one place where Akbar is going in slow motion
thinking about Jodhaa (And he imagines her singing the end lines of
man mohana song). Ultimate piece of communication between Ashutosh and
 ARR.

 5. In Lamhon ke daman Maain instrumentals: No words to express those
feelings (and those goosebumps in heart and stomach) when every time
the starting instruments of this song are played as BGM. Out of the
world feelings come through the mind.

 6. Beginning titles: I think its Sonu Nigam who sings while the
beginning title roll. He sings the word MOHABBAT in a very unique
way. It gives you a feel of a tail yet to be told.

 7. Orchestra: The use of orchestra (symphony kind of music)has been
tremendous. At the scenes where Akbar gets angry, there has been a
very dangerous kind of music (hard to explain, sorry). It raises your
 hair on arms.

 8. Khawaja mere khawaja instrumental: Its used at times when someone
 is depressed or sad.

 9. Man mohana instrumental: The tune of the song and some instruments
of the song are used very very beautifully at many places..

 10. Many more: I have forgotten many other small pieces, they were all
 superb.

I hardly can stop myself from going again in cinemas to listen to the
Divine, Pure, Warm and out of the world Background score of Akbar
Jodhaa. Hats off to His Excellency, Sir A R Rahman.

 Pravinder.
