2009-01-30 Thread Ashwin Kamath
Implying that ghazals are the only true form of music is very arrogant. I
believe Jagjit Singh is just another opportunist having his 15 secs of fame in
bashing Slumdog. Very obviously he has not heard the full umbrella of Rahman's
compositions and expecting Rahman to cater to his genre is very demanding.
Nobody asks Jagjit Singh to come out with a Carnatic, Rock or Hip Hop number.
His main forte is ghazals and we dont demand him change, expecting Rahman to
compose for every genre in the world overriding the theme in the movie is not
practical. Glad to see Aadesh Srivastav and Alka Yagnik defending Rahman with
valid points

If happens everywhere. It's the nature of the beast. Jealousy, envy,
whatever it is. When you're the top of the game, THE top, you will
have shots coming your way. It is to be expected.

Rahman is the best. He is receiving lots of attention, praise, etc.
The comments by Mr. Singh to me are not surprising given that I knew
that one of these days, someone would open their mouth and say
something negative about ARR. It was bound to happen. And it WILL
probably happen again. Someone will speak to the media and say
something sarcastic, or negative about Rahman, similar to what Ismail
Darbar said about Rahman a few years ago.

What bothered me about Mr. Singh's comments is that even if he didn't
mean to attack Rahman himself, the way his comments came out sounded
very accusatory and insulting, essentially saying, What Rahman has
accomplished is really not that great given that he has not composed
ghazals since ghazals are the ultimate and superior form of music.
His tone was arrogant and of superiority. Why couldn't he have just
said I would love for Rahman to compose ghazals since films today
don't have a lot of them. Rahman is talented and versatile enough to
compose ghazals. It is obvious that Mr. Singh has issues related to
anger and bitterness over his life and the fact that he is not getting
many film assignments. A person of his age and stature shouldn't be
making such impulsive and blunt remarks. I would expect that from a
junior artist or someone much younger.

When people make such comments about how Rahman uses only Western
tunes, did they ever hear his soundtracks such as Water, Earth,
Lagaan, Bose? What about songs like Piya Ho, Naina Neer, Na Shiqua
Hota, Mujphe Toofan, Sarfarosh Ki Tamanna, Desh Ki Mitti, Ghooparani,
Tere Bina, etc. etc.? You would get the feeling that they think that
Rahman only composes songs like Pappu all the time!!

After Sillunu Oru Kaadhal, Rahman has again used Jazz for the title track.
I just love it, not sure how the general listeners would take to it. Fingers
crossed.
For some strange listening to jazz always remind of Tom Jerry, dunno why  :-)

Would it be Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak once again with the arrival of Jaane Tu...
Ya Jaane Naa? This is the first feeling one got the moment the first look of
this Aamir Khan production was out. Marking the launch pad of his nephew,
Imraan Khan, Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Naa seems to be another innocent love story in
the offering sans any unnecessary mush, hence going truly with contemporary
times. With pretty girl Genelia D'Souza opposite Imraan in this campus flick
and A.R. Rahman as the composer, this Abbas Tyrewala debut directorial venture
(he also doubles up as a lyricist here), JTYJN, is a promising flick arriving
this summer. Does the music hold up to the promise? The answer is - Yes!

Write your own music review of Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na First things first - when
the best of the best of 2008 would be written down, the number 'Kabhi Kabhi
Aditi Zindagi' would definitely find a mention. Crooned by newcomer Rashid Ali
who is being introduced by Rahman on Bollywood musical arena, the song is
beautiful from the word GO, the moment guitar strings mark the song's
beginning.

Rashid's voice is just perfect for an actor who is being launched in a youthful
romantic entertainer and the singer utilizes the big platform to the fullest.
While Abbas' lyrics go truly with contemporary times, it is a nice change to
hear a Rahman composition in a truly mainstream cinema rather than the
historical/period/ issue based films for which he has been creating music for
quite some time now.

In true Rahman style, he gets together a bunch of singers for the track 'Pappu
Can't Dance'. Well, this is the track which is supposedly a spoof on Salman
Khan's on and off screen image and has been making news in last few days. The
song's beginning has a rhythm which has formed a part of the racy proceedings
in the first teaser of Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Naa that had kick started the film's
promotion a few weeks back.

Anupama, Benny Dayal, Blazee, Tanvi, Darshana, Satish Subramanium and Aslam
come together to sing about this character called 'Pappu' who has seen all the
riches in his life. Since the day he was born, he roams around in the best of
the cars, has a body to die for, boasts of an impeccable style, but alas, can't
dance to save his life. Hence the title - 'Pappu Can't Dance'. A fast moving
fun song, which has a campus setting to it and also appears in a 'remix
version', 'Pappu' is a song which should be fun when watched on the big screen.

It's a new sound at the very beginning of 'Jaane Tu Mera Kya Hai (Aditi)' that
hooks you on instantaneously. This very rhythm stays throughout this song which
is crooned for the female character of the film, Aditi, by yet another relative
newcomer Runa. If the song's haunting tune wasn't enough, the way Runa renders
the track makes it one as the sad theme of the song conveys what the
protagonist is going through. A number about a girl remembering the times gone
by with the boy she loved, 'Jaane Tu' is composed in a style, which is similar
to that of 'Zara Zara' [Rehnna Hai Terre Dil Mein] and hence can be expected to
grow over a period of time.

The song is later heard in a version meant for the film's male protagonist Jai
and is titled 'Jaane Tu Meri Kya Hai (Jai)'. This time around the beginning is
even more somber and takes it's own time to reach the stage where Sukhwinder
Singh comes around to hold the center stage. The pensive mood is conveyed well
yet again though this time around the version is even more somber.

Guitar is at play once again in the number 'Nazrein Milaana Nazrein Churaana'.
The best song to arrive after 'Kabhi Kabhi Aditi Zindagi', 'Nazrein' deserves
to be the next song in line for promotion. Packed with youthful energy, the
number has a Rahman stamp all over it and goes in perfectly well with the
film's campus mood. In fact just one hearing and you are sure to carry the
number along for your next camp fire outing.

Yet again, it's an array of singers - Benny Dayal, Satish Chakravarthy, Naresh
Iyer, Darshana, Shwetha, Tanvi, Bhargavi, Anupama - who come together but never
once does one feels like trying to find out the singer

The first time I listened to Kabhi Kabhi Aditi from the upcoming movie
Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na I told myself This sounds so awesome but I've
heard this before. After spending a few minutes wondering where I'd
heard it, I finally found it! :)

Its from the BGM of Mustafa Mustafa .. the first line is exactly the
same tune. Check out 4:04 to 4:18 of the clip below from Mustafa ..
it repeats the first line from the song Kabhi Kabhi.

Of course, it is hard not to be inspired by Mustafa - one of rahman's
all time best! :)

A silent user here (but also a composer),

Hi guys and girls,

Me as a omposer do use lots of samples, not in all my music. Ofcourse

I'm not the only one who uses these samples.

Last month I bought a sample bank: Uberschall - Da Nu RnB, Hip Hop

Drum Loops and Samples.

I was really glad hearing these awesome samplestill suddenly I

heard a simmilarity between a sample song called Hip Harp and Munbe

Munbe Vaa!!!

I was really shocked, it was like A. R. Rahman used these samples but

played them in adifferent range! it sounds like a complete lift! Even

the beat measure of this sample is a clear copy of the rythm used by

A. R. Rahman in Munbe Munbe Vaa!!!

I like you guys to hear these samples, but pls give me a good link

where i can upload these files.

Warning : DO NOT GET SHOCKED HEARING THESE SAMPLES, THESE SAMPLES ARE

MADE BEFORE A. R. RAHMAN'S MUNBE MUNBE VAA!!!

I can say, that everybody uses samples, wheter they are beats or

sounds. Every producers gets inspired by some samples. Even A. R.

Rahman, the biggist composer of these times, uses samples in his

music arts.

Do not reply stupidness untill you heared these samples, otherwise you

are fooling yourself and others. First listen to the sample and then

give you're opinion.

Sorry for my bad English:P

Subject: [arr] Is it me or that snare too loud?

Hello Rahmaniacs,

I was listening to Guru again, just like every other day. I know, I
know, most people have moved on to Sivaji. I still have the hangover
from Guru as I'm trying to absorb Sivaji. Wow, every song in Sivaji
is so unique and like always slow poison. Well, going back to Guru,
Tere Bina in particular.

It's definitely one of the best ARR songs, plus him singing it puts it
in another league completely. But if there is one thing I wish was
different about the song is the snare beat. Although the use of snare
itself is great, I find the pitch and volume of the snare a bit out
of place. I'm not critisizing Rahman, because as a fan I have come to
realize many a times that some of the unusual sounds in his songs
are intentional. Only the master knows his work and all we could do
is try to understand it. So, whether the snare bit there is
intentional? I don't know. May be it was Rahman's decision, may be it
was the work of the sound engineers. I'll never know. But I do know
that I would have appreciated the song a tab bit more, if the snare
hadn't been that loud.

The song itself has a very hindustani/sufi elements to it, as it is
inspired by Sajna tera bina by NFAK. The singing and instruments
for the most part are also along the same lines, if there is one thing
different about the mood of the song is the snare beat. The snare
sounds like it is out of a pop/rock/english song. Again, that is
intentional, I'm not surprised by that, it is Rahman after all, and in
fact I feel it's great fusion. But I can't ignore the sharpness and
volume of the snare that it sometimes sounds like some kind of timer
ticking. And its volume level varies throughout the song. I feel as
if it was added on top of the song after the whole song was done.

It sounds great when it starts at 00:20
All of a sudden there's a sharpness/volume increase at 00:39
It goes through minor changes in between and gets completely dropped
at 02:06 - The song sounds great without it.
It re-enters at a moderate level again at 02:47
It is well-blended with the background beat between 03:00 and 03:58
Then you can hear it in varying degrees until the song ends.

I'm not sure about anyone else, but I've had to turn the volume down
during certain parts of the song due to the snare. I know what you
are thinking, What is he doing complaining about the little things?

Well, I'm a Rahman fan, and by definition it means that I do pay
attention to and care about minute details in Rahman's songs.

But another thing I know about myself is that I have very sensitive
ears, I sometimes pick up sounds that most people in the room do not.
And that could just be a contributing factor to the whole situation.
So I was just wondering if anyone else felt the same way about the
snare being loud or is it just me after all?

Regards,
Wasim.

[arr] Start Movies interview...

2006-04-01 Thread Ashwin Kamath

Hi Everyone, Does anyone have Rehman's interview aired on Star Movies. It was right after Kadhalan was released. Probably the first Indian to be interviewed by Star Movies at that time. The interview was really great with Rehman doing a walkthrough of his compositions. I hope you guys have seenit.

[arr] Deja vu

2006-03-14 Thread Ashwin Kamath

A lot ofmessages have beenposted about how other composers "copying" rehman's tunes. I would not be that harsh to say the other composers copied the tunes. Here is my take on this.I have a feeling that when you listen to a song for a long time it kind of imbibes itself inside you. Then it starts reflecting in your work.Take Dus Bahane...(rocking number no doubt)but listen carefully to the openingbeats before the singer starts with 'here now;here now'. Now play taal se taal mila, listen to the humming after the initial water drop sounds. Voila we found a match. It would not be wise to sayVishal Shekhar copied these tunes. Its just that they are influenced by Rehman's songs so muchthat it starts showing up in their work. Hell if I started composing music tomorrow, it would be the same case.
So most of the times if certainnotes are similar to a song composed by someone else - it is merely a deja vu. The other song is influencing your song in an indirect way. I would consider such songs as a compliment to Rehman's song rather than take out my knife and rip apart the composers. With all due respect composing music is the mostprecious talentwhich only few people are gifted with. So lets not drag down other composers just to prove our point. On the flip side, we also have some composers who copy songs noteby note. You cannot do much about them. Just stop buying their music. Here is some food for thought The tram sequence bgmfrom yuvawhichgoesas "anjaana anjaani" sounds like the spiderman theme song. You know the one that used to play in the cartoons. Now I doubt if anyone will raise a finger against
Rehman. So just chill guys and enjoy the great music from the maestro.

Re: [arr] Re: Non-Musical Sounds in ARR's Work

2006-01-20 Thread Ashwin Kamath

Yup this a lot of funI got some of them+ Hiccups in "Koku Saiva Koku" from Muthu + Birds tweeting in the opening of "Kuluvalilay" from Muthu + Faint wind howling in the opening "Kaatre" song from Rhythm... + Watersounds in the opening "Kaatre" song from Rhythm...also in Karuthamma + Obviously how can one forget the train sounds which were immortalized in "Chaiyya Chaiyya" from Dil se + Crow croaks at the start of "Pettai rap" from KadhalanYou know when I go through this list, it seems that there is this small kid inside Rehman who is always trying to freak out and break away from traditions. I guess thats why he always refers to himself as a student who is always craving for new knowledge. anuja [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
