Re: [arr] John McLaughlin on AM studios

2008-08-11 Thread Balamurugan Ramakrishnan
wow...John Mcloughlin working in our Boss's works? which one could it be???

2008/8/11 Madhavan Rajan [EMAIL PROTECTED]

   It's a fabulous environment with a beautiful Neve 88R mixing board, a
perfect sound system, and PowerMac G5s all over the place, as well as
engineers that know Logic inside and out, says McLaughlin. Ranjit, Louiz,
and I were in the main room, and Sivamani and the soloists were in the
isolation booths, though we could see each other. The quality of the
environment put the New York studios I've been in to shame. I'd record at
A.M. studios again anytime. We recorded the album live over five days. The
only exception was Hadrien Feraud, who wasn't available for the sessions. He
visited me afterwards and I had him listen to the music, plugged him into
Logic, and away we went. His parts were mostly first takes because he's
absolutely outstanding and very sensitive to the music.

   Hi all,

I'm back with some snippets from Rahmania. The celeb this week was singer
Srinivas... (I guess he was the guest last friday too, but i couldnt listen
to last week's show coz i was out of town)

(as usual, please excuse if there are inaccuracies. typing this mail
 from memory)

 Srinivas:

Minsara Poove from Padayappa was the song that brought about a change in
my life It brought in lot of recognition and people started knowing
me... Though I had sung a few songs previously, the songs had become famous
but I hadnt got enough recognition... This song gave me that!!
I was called in to sing the track for the song The entire song tune
was ready... but initally, the pallavi (antara) of the song was
different It was a very soft starting for the song unlike the energetic
opening that we have now... the inital antara was not Minsara Poove... The
words were something like sowkkiyama kanne... sowkiyama (Sings that
tune)(***that tune is very different from the minsara poove that we know,
and is also different from Sowkkiyama kanne from sangamam in case you are
wondering if it is the sangamam song that u r talking about!***)

Then Nithyashree came over for the recording, and Rahman asked me to
teach her the tune as I had already practiced the tune It was an
honour and even when Nithyashree asked ARR about some doubts in the
tune, he just asked her to consult me... I was moved by the confidence he
 had in me...!!!

Mangalyam song (Alai payuthey) is one of the most auspicious songs and I
always start my concerts with that song! That song was composed n recorded
in about 5-10 mins!!! It was close to midnight and Rahman was playing some
chords and he suddenly hit upon this tune!! and immediately we recorded...
It was already decided that we will have Mangalyam Thanthuna as lyrics for
the song as it suited the situation The endrendum punnagai lyrics was
written by Rahman himself... HE has contributed the opening lyrics of many
 more songs!!

After I was recognised as a singer, and I started singing for lots of
other composers, i felt that it's been a long time since i had sung for
Rahman - even harmony or tracks... So, I wrote a mail to Rahman saying i
wanted to sing for him - even if it was harmony or tracks.. And I got a very
sweet reply from him - 'When God has given you wings, why do you want to
crawl? I'm really happy that you have established yourself as a leading
 singer...'

Keep listening to all Rahman classics... I would say 99% of all songs
that Rahman has composed are Classics!!

 Cheers,
 Aravind

... wouldn't this be one of the best things that happened to Indian music?
... wouldn't that be a roaring success?
... how many of us would quit their job and join it, if it existed today?
... how many talented musicians and composers could this generate?
... do you believe that this could achieve an international status?
... wouldn't you... just wish and hope that this would be a reality?

2007-03-01 Thread Balamurugan Ramakrishnan
very well said Jai.

come on people. looks like we'll all have to pray for you in the first
place. why is there such a stigma, the difference between north
indians and south? why leave people in the north east, and south east,
or even central india?

my point is, why can't we be one? i'm a third generation Indian born
in Malaysia. see, i still identify myself as an Indian, but my
nationality is Malaysian. i long for a united Indian front. all i can
see everywhere is people refering to themselves as south indians and
north indians. why the divide? is it all worth it?

when our brother ARR is trying to gel all indians into one single
identity, why not sow the seeds of one nation and not just continue to
rip it to shreds?

i long for a day when we will call ourselves Indians. not north, not
south. just one Indian.

Vande Mataram!

i'll pray for you all, brothers and sisters.

learn from our dear ARR. we are one. and only then can we call
ourselves true indians.

[arr] Re: Whats missing in ARR

2006-12-21 Thread Balamurugan Ramakrishnan
mr bharath, by far your entry into this discussion was what i was
waiting for...sensible,fact-rich and logically unbiassed between
north and south music industry.

great stuff man! do send our collective love to our Guru when you
see him next!

--Balamurugan Ramakrishnan--

--- In arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com, Bharath Venkatesan
[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

That is an interesting discussion going on here, but I think, we
need to
take few steps and take a brief look at the workflow employed by
both ARR
and HJ and try to understand the perceived sound quality
differences.

ARR's tracks go directly from his Logic Pro on Digidesign platform
into
either Euphonix System 5 or Neve 88R which then gets recorded back
into Pro
Tools. Most of the mix or creating space for every instrument in
the song,
takes place at the Euphonix/Neve level.

Now you have to understand that, System 5 is a digital console
whereas Neve
88R is a vintage sounding modern analog console which introduces
its own
sound/distortion to the mix. Part of western music industry loves
this
vintage sound and describes the crystal clear digital sound as
lifeless.

The songs we heard few years ago were all mixed totally either on
Euphonix
System 5 or completely in the box on Pro Tools, whereas the new
ones are
probably done fully on Neve which gives a different sonic
characters, which
few of you describe as not clear. I absolutely trust ARR/H.
Sridhar's
choice to use a particular gear to achieve the sound they have in
mind.

Now, somebody mentioned HJ having Euphonix MC and mentioned that
it was
advanced. I actually found it bit funny, no offence intended of
course. From
a simple man's viewpoint, Euphonix Media Applications controller,
which is
what HJ has, is a powerful keyboard and mouse, which offers lot of
short cut
keys, knobs, jog wheels, buttons etc, which improves the time you
take to do
certain operations on programs like Logic Pro, Pro Tools. I have
used MC few
times and HJ himself showed me things, he feels, help him do things
efficiently. Simply put, HJ's gadget doesn't have onboard signal
processing
as the big brother version installed at ARR's studio.

With HJ's workflow, it is slightly different. Everything is
recorded and mixed
directly on Pro Tools. If you look at Digidesign's website, you
can see that
he has ICON, which is a powerful controller for Pro Tools, but
doesn't have
onboard signal processing. Instead, it uses high quality
plugins/tools that
are available from within Pro Tools for sound processing. Once the
sound
enters the computer, it stays digital until the end. So you feel
that it is
clear, as there is no distortion introduced anywhere in the signal
chain, as
compared to the effect Neve has on songs mixed at ARR's studio.

With Guru, I think, it gets much more complex, when the tracks
are brought
from different studios across the world (e.g. Phase one Toronto,
and may be
some studio from Mumbai). Each session might have had different
microphones,
different recording techniques, engineers etc and the
responsibility to make
it sound even/good, falls on mixing engineer's shoulders.

Having met both, being fan of both and, H. Sridhar, being my
indirect
mentor, I will refrain from judging which one is better. I like
both and of
course, I would feel proud and earn more bragging brownie points,
if ARR
 mixes everything on Pro Tools.

Apart from this whole technology gizmos, as somebody else pointed
out,
orchestration/arrangement matters a lot. With ARR songs, there are
so many
things happening that I learn something new, every time I listen
to it.

So, personally, I don't really bog myself down too much on the
sound quality
and trust the judgment of professionals doing the job and just
enjoy the
 music they create.

Disclaimer: BTW if anyone thinks or knows that I am totally wrong
on the
technology side of things, please let me know. These are few
things I picked
up when I had the privilege of meeting the greats and I very well
could have
misunderstood. I really admire your concentration, if you really
read each
and every line so far :)
