[arr] Re: RAHMANJI MISSED NATIONAL AWARD :-(
Thanks for the comments! Glad to see some of you agreed. Vinod: after my initial assertion that Patki has composed "mile sur", Gopal also asked if Banks had composed it. After looking up web references [not necessarily credible, I know], I'm a little uncertain now. Some articles say Banks did compose it, but others mention Patki as composer. Incidentally, this link [http://www.ashokpatki.com/jamgalasa.html] from Patki's website says he created it, and the opening of the song plays, so at least he seems to be claiming it. Perhaps Banks was also involved in some capacity. I'll let you know if I find more about this. As Madhavan pointed out, Rahman himself is probably the best source to help us discover new voices, musicians, and music. I would have never heard of the likes of Leigh Ann Woodard, Maryam Tollar, the Continuum, or the now lost Shahul Hameed if it wasn't for him! [arr] Re: RAHMANJI MISSED NATIONAL AWARD :-(
[Couldn't resist writing in, as I was a little surprised by some of the comments on this topic.] Ashok Patki, who won this year's National Award for Music, is no greenhorn. Even though some of you may have not heard of him, he's a veteran with several albums to his credit. I wonder how many of you, who have dismissed the award as not being meritorious, have actually heard the music of Antarnad (I'll readily confess I haven't, but then I'm not saying his work is inferior). This is not to say that the National Awards are flawless. I myself find some of the awards in the last few years, and even this year, to be eyebrow-raising. But I think many people will admit that most of the awards (especially the less glamourous ones) go to fairly talented people, even if they are not popular, or even if it wasn't their best work. In comparison, I (and again, I'm sure, others would agree) find that some of the mainstream 'Bollywood' awards seem to degenerate into fraternal backscratching. Rahman wins a lot of these awards, but no one is silly enough to suggest lack of merit in these choices, even if they didn't like who won the other awards in those shows. The same courtesy should be extended to these awardees as well. Ashok Patki's pedigree isn't diminished by our ignorance of his work, nor is Rahman's genius shadowed by not winning an award. IIRC, I read in this very group that Rahman was quoted as saying that the music of Omkara was among the best that year, so some of you should have been canvassing for that film to win, given that it was among Rahman's own choices. (BTW, some of you have mentioned Rang De Basanti in this context. FYI, that film was a 2005 submission, and you may recall Naresh Iyer winning for that film last year.) I guess a man of Rahman's stature would like us to broaden our musical horizons, especially w.r.t Indian musicians, and not be so blinded by affection for him. Disappointment is understandable, dismissal isn't :-) The list of national awardees for Best Music is almost a who's who of musical talent, especially lesser known talent, and is a good place to begin such explorations, is it not? Returning to Ashok Patki. His website is at http://www.ashokpatki.com, but unfortunately no non-Marathi version seems to exist. I can't find the music of Antarnaad online, but his "Savalee" (or "Savalii", meaning 'shadow'), a recent Marathi film, is said to have some good classical numbers. They can be heard at www.musicindiaonline.com/music/hindi_bollywood/s/movie_name.9074/ And finally, most of you must have heard at least one famous creation by Ashok Patki. That happens to be "mile sur meraa tumhaara". happy aural adventures, Ramanand -- Webpage: http://www.it.iitb.ac.in/~ramanand Weblogs: Personal: http://quatrainman.blogspot.com Interrobang (the quiz blog): http://notesandstones.blogspot.com
[arr] English Translation of "jashn-e-bahaaraa.N"
Hi, this is an attempt to translate "jashn-e-bahaaraa.N", as someone had requested. I just got a Urdu dictionary and so what better way to break it in! :-) However, be warned that this is by no means a "poetic" translation - I am not qualified to do that. What I have done instead, is to provide a mainly literal translation, sentence-by-sentence, with special mentions of some of the more unusual words. To peel back the metaphors and to "feel" the song is for you to do, and that is the real fun in reading poetry, right? I am sure I have made a few errors, so would be grateful to anyone who can point them out or offer an alternative view on some of the translations. I have attempted to transcribe the lyrics in ITrans, which may be a little difficult for people not used to the scheme. If you can disregard the ".N" and ".n" marks, you'll be fine. See [4] for details. === Jashn-e-bahaaraa.N (A.R.Rahman, Javed Akhtar, Javed Ali) === kahane ko jashn-e-bahaaraa.N hai ("ostensibly, the season is spring"; j-e-b: the season of flowers, spring) ishq yeh dekh ke hairaa.N hai ("love is surprised to see that...") phool se khushabuu khafaa khafaa hai gulshan me.n ("(...that) in the garden, the fragrance is angry/upset with the flower") chupaa hai koi ra.nj fizaa ki chilman me.n ("in the curtains/blinds (chilman) of the breeze/wind (fizaa) hides some grief (ra.nj)") saare sahame nazaare hai.n [1] ("all the sights and sounds are cowering/are quiet/are scared" - sahamnaa: to be afraid) soye soye waqt ke dhaare hai.n ("the streams of time are quiet/asleep"; dhaare: streams) aur dil me.n koi khoi si baate.n hai.n ("and there are some thoughts lost in the heart") kehne ko ... -- kaise kahe, kyaa hai sitam; sochte hai.n ab yeh hum ("how do I talk about that which troubles me; I think about..."; sitam: "trouble") koi kaise kahe woh hai yaa nahii.n hamaare ("(think about) ...how does one ask if she is indeed mine or not") karte to hai saath safar, faasle hai phir bhi magar ("we are (alternative: travel/live) together, but a distance exists (between us)" faasle: distance) jaise milte nahii.n kisi dariyaa ke do kinaare ("like two banks of a river which do not meet") paas hai phir bhi paas nahii.n, hum ko yeh Gam raas nahii.n ("she/we are apart despite being together; one cannot bear this sorrow any more"; Gam: sorrow) shishe ki ek diiwar hai jaise darmiyaa.N ("there is, as it were, a wall of glass between us") saare sahame nazaare hai... -- humne jo thaa naGamaa sunaa ("the sweet melody that one had heard") dil ne thaa usko chunaa ("the heart had chosen that (song)") yeh daastaa.n hame.n waqt ne kaisi sunaai ("what is this story that time (life) has narrated to me/us") hum jo agar hai Gamagii.n, woh bhi udhar khush to nahi ("if I am stricken with grief, she too isn't happy there"; Gamagii.n: sad) mulaakato.n me.n hai jaise ghul si gayii tanhaayii (it is as if the meetings/encounters are blended with loneliness") mil ke bhi hum milte nahii.n; khil ke bhi gul khilte nahi.n ("we do not meet despite meeting; the flower does not bloom despite blooming") aa.Nkho.n mai.n hai bahaare.n dil mai khizaa.N ("the eyes can see flowers (of spring), but there is an autumn in the heart"[2]; "khizaa.N": fall, autumn) saare sahame nazaare hai... === Notes: [1] I wasn't very sure if the word used was "sahame" or "sahan". The latter would translate into "courtyard" which would make syntactic sense but probably wouldn't tie in with the flow of the song, so I went for "sahame", which is what most people seem to think it is. [2] This is a nice touch - contrasting the seasons outside and inside. [3] The main interpretation of this song would be this couple who, despite being betrothed/married, have not been able to emotionally "bond" (ghastly modern word that which I couldn't find a substitute for). Has a nice amount of 'longing' mixed with the slightly upbeat (to me) melody/arrangements, which reminds me of "Tere Bina" from "Guru". [4] http://www.aczoom.com/itrans/TRANS.TXT === BTW, I'd seen people discussing whether the Rabab was the string instrument in this song. Seeing there is a credit (to Seenu) for the Oud, could this be the Oud? (disclosure: I don't know how the Oud sounds, but have heard that it is similar to the Rabab) Cheers, Ramanand -- Webpage: http://www.it.iitb.ac.in/~ramanand Weblogs: Personal: http://quatrainman.blogspot.com Interrobang (the quiz blog): http://notesandstones.blogspot.com
[arr] Re: JASHN E BAHARAA LYRICS
Nice work on the lyrics. I haven't heard the song online much, but from what I remember, I think I note the following small corrections in the transcription: A. > or dil mai khoi khoi si baate hai I think this could be "dil me.n koi khoi si baate hai.n" (literally; *some* (koi) lost (khoi) ), unless I'm put off by Javed Ali's pronunciation. B. > Hum jo agar hai gamhin, woh bhi udhar khush to nahi I think this is "ghamghiin" and not "ghamhiin". "Ghamgiin" is sad, doleful, udaas. [Take above comments with pinches of salt!] BTW, the Javed Akhtar lyrics seem to have fit very well in the meter of the song - found it impressive. all elements in the song seem to combine well. Quite a jashn-e-bahaaraa. Thanks, Ramanand > 5. [arr] Re: Are Rahman's songs "too hard to sing" for the common man?
> 14a. Are Rahman's songs "too hard to sing" for the common man? Hi Ajit, I've felt similarly too. There is a degree of complexity in his songs that renders it hard to repeat using simple devices such as hummability or quickly reproducing it on a single instrument. People can manage snatches of it in their bathroom singing, but the overall song is not that easy to render in quick iterations. I think it's also to do with the fact that, as Gulzarsaab keeps re-iterating, people like Rahman or Vishal Bhardwaj do not adhere to the traditional structure of the film song; instead, they often lace the song with complex patterns, which makes them novel and interesting. (This doesn't imply the songs are inferior in any respect or that people cannot appreciate the songs. Or even that this is true of all their output. But many of their songs are so multi-threaded and multi-layered that analysis requires understanding several factors. The genius, of course, lies in making even these complex songs accessible, sometimes by use of a hook in the lyrics, melody, song styles, or even in the voices.) I don't really follow televised music competitions all that much, but it always seems to me that Rahman songs are sung less in these competitions, which to my mind is a simple indicator of this "hard to sing" quality. The songs are tough to master, and often they're not always about the singing (that is, the voice is not always the centrepiece) Some may choose to criticise this aspect, or some may see it as making film music more rounded and "different". But IMO, there's no denying this. Re: [arr] Digest Number 3838
Hi Durba, I may be completely wrong here, but it could just be a set that was put up for the song. Sabu Cyril put up a lot of wonderful sets set in Sri Lanka in studios and on location in Kerala, and IIRC, there was little (or maybe even no) shooting in Sri Lanka. Knowing Mani Ratnam's penchant for carefully shooting near water(falls) , this is more likely to have happened in India. I did a quick little web search and retrieved http://rajeevsnair.blogspot.com/2005/10/artist-interview-art-director-sabu.html. This has a reference to "huge Buddha statues placed strategically on the Chalakkudy waterfalls in neighbouring Kerala." Maybe some of the Sri Lankan members on this group can confirm if such a location exists and if yes, whether the song was shot on location. Cheers, Ramanand > 16.
