I think ARR has not done any pure Psychedelic Rock.

He has done some Psychedelic stuff like 'Ishq Ada hai', 'Satrangi Re'.
I want something of the lines of 'California Dreaming' , 'Comfortably Numb'.

[arr] 2 Charanams still needed ?

2009-12-13 Thread Pradeepan R
Just a general question.
There was a time in the 60's when most tamil songs had even 3 charanams. but
the interludes would be repeated.
Unless there is a seriously good 2nd interlude or a need for more lyrics,
are the 2 Charanams in a song still needed nowadays ?
Of Late, I feel ARR thinks the 2nd one is just a filler too..
not being negatively critical, just my opinion.

2009-10-12 Thread Pradeepan R
if anyone expects Hollywood movies to have 5 or 6 songs and dance numbers to
ARR's music, then they r going to be disappointed. Even Jai Ho was a great
piece of fortune.
That does NOT mean ARR should not do Hollywood movies... the Reqmt is
different. and its a completely different world.
Some of the greatest Composers have been doing only Soundtracks for movies
(Ennio Morricone, Jerry Goldsmith, John Williams)
Their songs r not going to be heard by the masses or on the clubs.. but I
want ARR to show the world he is as good as them because he IS.
To get into the mainstream US public, then the way to go is pop albums.
Even there, most of the female singers get the lime light rather than the
composer..

[arr] "Produced" by - What does it mean

2009-09-26 Thread Pradeepan R
General Question:
Who is a Music Producer ?
Ever since ARR became global in the last 5/6 years, there is more & more
reference to him being called "Composer & Producer"..
I know there are guys who don't compose at all - yet they are Producers..
 So ??

2009-09-26 Thread Pradeepan R
Chord, judging by the pre-hype about the movie , it is bound to do pretty
decent, unless its a complele foul up..
Women dig into most romantic comedies/ Vince vaughan types.
that was a +ve start for ARR even before he came into the picture..
Now, with the beautiful music - and different American music standards - I
have no doubt ARR will get tremendously +ve applauses after the movie also
comes out..
But shooting for Oscar ---thats a different story altogether..
Maybe ARR is bound for even greater destiny :))

Re: [arr] Vennilavae (Minsara Kanavu) by Shankar Mahadevan?

2009-09-14 Thread Pradeepan R
The actual vennilave in the movie is sung by Hariharan & Sadhana.
The vennilave sad & short version is by Shankar Mahadevan.
Both r still referred to as vennilave - which means 'Oh White moon' :-)
The sad version was not in the audio cassette.. don't think it was in the CD
either.
*Question*: Who is the female singer in the sad vennilave version ? Its def,
not Sadhana.
A.V.Ramanan's wife ???

Re: [arr] Bhangra Songs by ARR

2009-09-14 Thread Pradeepan R
Typically Rahman mixes two or even three genres in the same song.
Baba - Dippu Dippu starts off as a Bangra and then the Charanam drifts off.
That is something great in ARR"s composition, that he can casually mix raaga
based songs with western genre
or multiple Raagas within the same song.
btw, what would be Mono Lisa - Mr.Romeo song ?

Arun, thanks :) brings back memories of 95/96
In Indian there is one more example.. although I think (IMO) it is not ARR
intentionally doing it.
reason being - it is out of synch / out of timing.
In Pachaikiligal tholodu - when the 2nd interlude plays, there is a distinct
CHIME souunding, like somebody's Wrist watch just chimed on the Hour
I've always thought its a recording mistake :)
Pls listen at 3:31 - 3:33.

Re: [arr] Is ARR's music good or bad?

2009-08-29 Thread Pradeepan R
To explain Rahman's music , here is an analogy.
If a 4 year old kid has heard only rhymes all its life & feels extremely
happy hearing them.. its good.
But where does the musical knowledge & Taste Expand..
Someone has to de-program the human brain to make it unlearn the fixed
patterns that it recognizes in music
and be able to see the new patterns.
That is exactly what ARR's music does to me..
That is ARR's greatest achievement for me personally.. he has been able to
make me digest different types of music & enjoy them!!
I'm glad he keeps evolving.. I thank God his music is constantly changing ,
exploring diffferent patterns of tunes & Genres, and along the way I pick up
something new...

Re: [arr] Should ARR stop developing BGMs?

2009-08-04 Thread Pradeepan R
Actually , BGM is the lifeline of the movie.
Some of the greatest movies - both in India & around the world have had the
best scores to go with them.
The greatness of a Movie Director & Music composer lie in bringing out the
best of each other to give a sum that is greater than the individual.
for eg, a Giant Lizard is terrorizing a city..
you can give great dramatic music to this scene , but there is only a limit
to it..
Please watch some movies for which Ennio Morricone has given the score.
There are scenes which have tremendous impact - strangely though, there
won't be a dialog or actiion going on..
just the characters pondering or someone reflecting at himself..!!
ARR is a master at both.. he should continue to give BGMs.
I've listened to just ARR BGM;s for several hours..
personally though, I wish he gives more 'theme' based music , rather than
using the songs as BGM pieces.
stand out example : The theme of the boy (Rythm).
