2009-10-27 Thread Raam
Sunitha:pls share your experiences and relationship with arr
SPB:I was introduced to Malayalam films by ARR's father Mr.Shekhar who was then
a music conductor.I first saw Dileep when he was may be 3-4 years old and when
I was 22.I knew nothing of his music as he was only a kid.A few years later he
did a "one man show".He also performed on my birthday at an event organized by
Kalasagar.I got to know Rahman more closely when he was working with music
composer duo Raj-Koti.He was a modest talker. For many people Rahman is a
matinee idol.Lot of composers today follow and try to compose music like
him.But I would like to say not only you must follow Rahman as a composer but
you must also follow him as a human being.Despite the success he's had and
seen, inspite of the Oscars he is still the same old down to earth person. No
pride in what he's done,no ego towards his singers and co-workers.He even
praises all his singer's misnotes, records them and later edits them and gives
the clean version. To date he owns the Ambassador
he carried his musical instuments in,he still lives in his same old house in
the small street, not a huge dresser and no 'who are you' posing after all that
he has achieved.
When I went for the recording of Roja,I congratulated Dileep on his chance to
work with such a good organization and director. To this Rahman said,"Sir I'm
just a 22 year 'bacha' thrown into the mix with music greats like MSV and
Illaiyaraja.I guess I'll only last for 5 years max after which it's me,my
keyboard and my jingles again".I met Rahman after 5 years and asked 'Dileep how
come you are still here?' and he said,"Sir I think god has given me another
5".Another 5 years and I said to Rahman there is no more going back.God has
just stuck you here.As you were moving forward god has been sealing all the
doors behind you so you won't have to go back.Such is the modesty of this great
man and Allah keeps this man like that,-'Allah Rakha'

Re: [arr] What do we as ARR fans all have in common?

2009-03-03 Thread amritha raam
"Because ARR's music is so spiritually informed, are we as a group of

devoted ARR fans more sensitive to and attuned to spirituality in

general? "

To me this part of your reasoning appeals because  I believe each and everyone
of us is spiritually inclined though it can be in varying degrees and ARR's
music brings about that spiritual awakening in us and we are able to appreciate
that awakening. Hence this in turn causes us to bond together as a group.

This question relates to our love for ARR and his music. I have

always been fascinated in the relationships between human variables

and music/art preference.

We all love ARR and his music for various reasons. There are many

individual differences as to why each of us loves his music so much.

But, I'm more interested in the common factors. We are part of a fan

group, posting messages, having ARR and his music as a big part of

our lives. This same question can be asked to any fan group of any

artist, but why is it that ARR's music touches us and impresses us AS

A GROUP and does not have the same effect on others? Again, I'm more

interested in COMMON human factors that bind us as a group that lead

us to be such passionate and devoted ARR fans.

Because ARR's music is so spiritually informed, are we as a group of

devoted ARR fans more sensitive to and attuned to spirituality in

general? Because ARR's music is so diverse and encompasses worldly

influences, are we as a group more worldly and tolerant in our

approach to human differences? Because ARR's music is often so thick

and layered and well textured, are we as a group for some reason

better able to process this complexity in more meaningful ways than

others who prefer simpler music by virtue of our education,

upbringing, or other factors? Are we as a group more compassionate

towards others since ARR is all about giving and helping?

Again, these are just thoughts. I'm interested in generating a

aningful discussion about what factors bind us as a group of

passionate ARR fans. Thanks for reading and hope to hear your

responses.

Who's AR Rahman?

It is quite amusing to see how geo- political differences can influence the
coverage of events

that have cultural acceptability across borders. KUNAL MAJUMDAR scans Dawn and
The News of

Pakistan, and The Daily Star and The New Age of Bangladesh in search of two
words ‘AR Rahman’

and ‘Oscars’.

Posted Sunday, Mar 01 15:59:04, 2009

While the Indian media went overboard with the coverage of Oscars, the
Pakistani media tried

its best to ignore the Indian connection. The leading newspaper Dawn has no
mention of AR

Rahman’s win. In its lead article – ‘Slumdog scoops eight of its ten
nominations’ (23 Feb,

2009); it does mention that the movie is based in Mumbai and gives brief
outline of the story.

Beyond that, it simply ignores the Indians who won the Oscars. A feeling that
Dawn

intentionally wanted to stress on the poverty angle of the story comes with the
accompanying

articles and photographs of slum kids.

The News, of the Jang Group, was no different. The article -- ‘Slumdog
Millionaire’ wins Oscar

gold at 81’st Academy Awards (February 24, 2009) tells the readers that Slumdog
is small-budget

British movie on “A ragtag group of Indian orphans”. The writer mentions how
the cast and the

crew of the movie was present to accept the best film award, which included
“several school

children who were plucked from Mumbai’s shantytowns to appear in the movie”.
AR Rahman again

ignored!

The Daily Times also ignores the Indian winners. However, it has a more
sympathetic approach.

It quotes Danny Boyle offering gratitude to Mumbaikars and saying they even,
“dwarf even this

guy (Oscar statue)”. The newspaper is the only one to carry a photograph of
the cast and crew

of the film, where you can see Anil Kapoor, AR Rahman and Rasul Pookuthy.

One wonders how many Pakistanis actually know about Penelope Cruz and Hugh
Jackman, compared to

AR Rahman!

Bangladeshi awareness

Bangladeshi newspapers seem to be much more aware about the Indians in the
movie. In an article

– Oscar Glory for ‘Slumdog’(February 24, 2009), The Daily Star mentions AR
Rahman’s win quite

prominently. The newspaper calls Slumdog Millionaire a “feel-good film about a
Mumbai tea boy

who rises from poverty and enters a television quiz show to win millions and
find the love of

his life”. Quite a contrast to Pakistani media’s definition. It goes on to
mention that in

spite of being directed and produced by Englishmen, many Indians claim it to be
their own. A

very just portray of the debate in India on the movie. The article also
mentions about Resul

Pookutty and the best documentary – Smile Pinki. Photographs alongside have AR
Rahman with his

two Oscar statues.

‘AR Rahman wins Golden Globe’ was the front-page story on The New Age (February
24, 2009). The

newspaper used Reuter’s input and made Rahman’s win the peg of the story. The
writer spoke

about the versatility of Rahman’s music and his other achievements. While
other western actors

and films did get a mention, but it didn’t dominate the story unlike the
Pakistani coverage.

It is quite amusing to find how geo- political differences can influence the
coverage of events

that have cultural acceptability across borders.

Well, i just got a thought that ARR bags two

Oscars for his 1st song.

What would happen if the world listens to his

If even a single ARR song can create the history,

what would happen, if his all songs are adapted

I think, we are the luckest people who could

He loves to go beyond the script and wants to know about the characters,

I dont think you can say that RDB was consistent for 25 years. If you
look at his career graph, he had first hit in "Teesri Kasam", which came in
1966. he had great time from then to early 80s. But by then his number of
his were few and rare. I think between 80 - 85 he had only few hits like
Saagar, Masoom, Betaab, Shakti etc.

But after 85, almost all his scores were big time flops. (I am not running
down his abilities).

I would say the most consistent hot maker in hindi film industry was
Laxmikanth Pyarelal. They had their first hit parasmani in 1963 and they had
hits all the way till 1993 (Khalnayak). Thats 30 years .. now thats
something which nobody has achieved in hindi film industry.

PS. Giving hits is no indication of ones talent. Else ARR would have been
marked as untalented for Bose :-)

Re: [arr] Birthday present from Me to Rahman and the Group... Mix60

2007-01-09 Thread Raam

Appreciate your fine work Kaissiom...thanks for sharing

On 1/8/07, kaissiom <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

  Hello Rahmaniacs,

Upon many requests, my promise to extend the original 20 minutes
medley to 60 minutes is now fulfilled. After months of work, in and
out of the project, combining some 120+ musical masterpieces, I have
been able to somewhat celebrate Rahman in 60 minutes of this musical
journey called "Mix60 @arrahmanfans."

I was working on two separate projects, the 60 medley and a separate
mix just for his birthday. At the last minutes I decide to combine
both projects. The mix that appears towards the last 4 or 5 minutes
of the medley was supposed to be the 2nd project, but there you have
it, both projects in one.. over 64 minutes of musical journey with
Rahman.

Just like before, test your knowledge of Rahman's music see if
you can correctly identify all the musical bits. And if you can,
you certainly deserve a pat or two on the back because only some
dedicated fans would know all the music bits, unless you are a new
fan. The 20 minute medley had some logic to it...it was a little
easier to identify all the tracks, but you'll find that the rest of
the 60 minute medley is all kinds of things mixed together. So the
first 20 minutes are somewhat logical but the rest is just a mess...
I just did whatever I felt like... some parts have come off well..
others.. I just liked doing anyway.

So, here's my Birthday wishes to Rahman, I wish him joy and even
more success in life and hope he continues to mesmerize us the way
he has. Happy Birthday Rahman.

Like always, your comments and criticisms are always welcome. Do
let me know how you like it. I have uploaded a low quality version

Unknown facts of Rahman - Read It
Now!
 Whenever
you talk about Rahman life, there is a lot of things happend around him
other than music. A lot of great people talk about him because of his
simplcity and divine towards work. Since I'm a die hard fan of Rahman, I was
following his updates and news about him since he begin his career. In this
section I would share with you facts you might not know about Rahman or a
recap of his past.

" On his trip to Delhi to receive the Padma Shri, he offered namaaz at the
Hazrath Nizamuddin Dargah. In 1995, his mother chose Saira Banu as his
bride. The couple have two daughters.

Rahman zealously guards his privacy. His house is protected from prying
eyes by an imposing gate and guests are ushered through a side gate into a
small and austere office. Ask him to pose for a photograph in his
well-manicured lawn, and he very politely but firmly shakes his head. "He
just wants to be left alone with his music," said James Noell, a long-time
aide. He would rather the hype and hoopla surrounded his music than his
persona.

But his shy demeanour hides a generous heart. Associates remember him
stopping at a busy Mumbai intersection to give alms to beggars lining the
street. "He just thrust his hand into his pockets and gave them all the
money," said one. Another time in Chennai he got out of his car to help a
cyclist who lay in an epileptic seizure."

*Source by E Vijayalakshmi, Chennai, All the world is a keyboard .
*
"I worked with him for 58 nights for Taal and he would compose music from
10 p.m. to 8 a.m. He knows technique, has a rare sense of sound and a
great ear. He can make any besu[image:

(tuneless) voice sing well. This is obvious from singers who have sung
beautifully for his albums but have not done well later."

After Roja I was the first Hindi film director to approach him with a
project in 1994. It was for Shikhar with Jackie Shroff and Shah Rukh Khan
which unfortunately did not materialise. When I met him for the first time I
found him so divine and so simple. "Let us work first, then we'll talk about
money," he told me then. It is strange now that he is the highest-paid music
director in the history of the Indian music industry!

I love him both as a composer and as a friend. He is very sweet to talk
to. The only thing is you talk and he listens! (Laughs.)"

*He's divine and simple - by Subhash Ghai*

" When we were working on Bombay, the mixing was being held up since the
background score was not ready. For three days, Rahman sat in his studio
from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., but nothing would work. He needed to deliver a
score which would bind the film, but was having a creative block. There was
some tension. He tried fiddling around with the theme he had composed, but
nothing worked. So we would sit and chat for hours about things other than
[image:
http://photos1.blogger.com/x/blogger2/5051/4343/320/878586/cov8_small.jpg]
music.

We decided not to work on the fourth day. At 10 p.m. he invited me over to
his place. We sat chatting again, but this time I felt there was something
which had not been there on the other days. He said, "Let's go into the
studio." The theme was played again. He said, "Let's put lyrics into it and
let's have a song." That was absolutely brilliant. We had a lyrical
rendition of the background score. Rahman must have been truly inspired to
do that.

I remember another instance connected with Bombay. We had recorded
Hariharan for the Uyire song picturised on Arvind Swamy and I was mixing it.
As we had used a lot of electronics, I was cleaning up the track of all
breathing sounds and 'dirt'. When Rahman heard it, the first thing he said
was, "There is something missing." I told him about my cleaning exercise and
he said, "What the song needs is a lot of air." So I put all the 'dirt'
back, and truly the song had much more life especially since it was
picturised against the beautiful forts and sea. With my cleaning I had taken
the life out of the song! Even now I get goose bumps when I think about it.

Rahman is humble and very generous with money. He hates to see people
suffer. I think his philosophy is that people should derive happiness from
his music, even if it is a sad tune. He has this tremendous need to be
perfect. Of course, we also differ in our views; I criticise his music if I
feel it lacks his signature and this irritates him sometimes."

Regards,
Shah Navas

Guhan. CHENNAI: It sounded like a contest: a section of the media and industry insiders were betting on a date in December for the launch of superstar Rajnikant's next movie, and the film's production team. The latter had kept the date a secret. So it was a surprise to all when on Monday the puja was performed for AVM productions `Sivaji' ata brief and solemn function. The producers said they had made it brief considering the plight of lakhs of people affected by the rain in the State. The producers, AVM Saravanan and M.S. Guhan, were joined by Rajnikant and director Sankar. The lead lady Shreya took time off from a commercial shoot to attend the
function. The unit kept the function under wraps and even Shreya knew about it only after coming to AVM studio. Similarly, comedian Vivek too thought it was for some discussion, and got a surprise. Keeping with the production house's tradition, the puja was held on the third flood of the studio. It was only two days back that the floor was fully air-conditioned. The producers came in at 9 a.m. Director Shanker was at the studio at 9.15 a.m and Rajnikant walked in at 9.20 for the simple 15 minute function. Music director A.R. Rahman, who is abroad, was represented by his mother Karima Begum. Others who attended included lyricist Vairamuthu, cameraman K.V.
