You know you are a Rahman fan when…

1.You have a peculiar taste in music, which does not

necessarily have to match the taste of the masses.

2.You have a good sense of melody and rhythm and can tell good

music from average. You appreciate good music, regardless of who
it

 comes from.

3.You can go on for hours talking about Rahman when someone

makes a mistake of asking you about your favorite music.

4.You are never content and are always hungry and thirsty for

 more from Rahman.

5.You have had many euphoric moments in your life.. connected

 with Rahman's music.

6.You agree that an average Rahman song is better than the
best

most of the other can churn out.

7.Regardless of how the World finds Rahman music, you think

Rahman makes music just for your ears. You genuinely believe that

Rahman somehow knows what kind of music you unconsciously crave
and

then magically delivers that to you.

8.Your most prized collection in your entire music collection

is your Rahman collection, whether it's in form of cassettes, CD's
or

hard-disk space on computer or ipods.

9.You sometimes feel this bliss, a kind of feeling that you
are

in heaven, when listening to Rahman's music.

 10. If the World was to go back to using the barter system
again,

 you wouldn't mind trading a 1000 non-Rahman songs for a single
Rahman

 song.

 11. You share this special bond with Rahman which is impossible

to describe in words, let alone explain it to others.

 12. Your friends/family fail to understand why you listen to

music in a language that makes no sense to you, whatsoever. But,
a

few weeks later, you totally understand why your friends/family
are

humming/singing the very song they don't understand and were
puzzled

 about you listening to it.

 13. You are part of the Rahman Yahoo! group and visit it at
least

 once a day.

 14. You take pleasure in new group members arguing with likes of

Gops and Vijay, when they come out with some Rahman info/news.

 15. You are tired of new member joining the group and inquiring

about and referring to the fake Ekyam Satyam. You too hope to

listen to the real one someday, if it exists somewhere.

 16. You can talk to any other Rahman fan and connect with them

 instantly.

 17. You have a deep desire to meet Rahman in person, and know

deep in your heart that one day your dream will come true.

 18. You have thought of it many a times and tried to come up
with

a plan of what you would do? How would you react? when you
actually

 meet Rahman.

 19. You can find the challenging task of solving a complex

problem rather easy compared to the daunting and difficult task of

coming up with your absolute top-10 Rahman favorites.

 20. Any criticism of Rahman is hard for you to digest, because

most of the time it comes from people that haven't heard enough of

Rahman and yet have no problem talking about him.

 21. Your blood pressure tends to rise when an average listener

sings praises for other MDs(especially Anu Malik, Harris J, and
the

 more recent and annoying Himesh).

 22. When it comes to R.D. Burman or may be Illayaraja, you tend

to put an end to the conversation by saying... No doubt,
Illayaraja

is the greatest, but I think Rahman is even better... because
it's

 true. (Self-fulfilling prophecy?)

 23. You are a select few in the country that are familiar with

obscure terms such as BGM or Interlude etc. And furthermore,
you

are a rare breed of fans that actually collects and listens to

these BGM and Musical bits used in commercials.

 24. You can listen to an hour of non-stop Rahman interludes and

guess over 80% of them right.

 25. You eagerly wait for each and every Rahman release, you set

very high expectations for each album, a day after the release you

will bash the album as below-average, a few months later you will

hail the same album as a masterpiece and one of your personal

 favorites.

 26. You suffer from this rare condition where... you wake up
from

your sleep, humming or singing a Rahman tune, involuntarily. You

realize the condition is severe when you randomly shout out a
Rahman

 tune you

Are you referring to the song

Anthimazhai pozhigirathu, Ovvoru thuliyilum un mugam therigirathu?

This song was composed by Ilayaraja to the best of my belief. No idea

the power of ARRs voice and it will surely take us the trance

some of the songs i considered and didn't feel real pleased to
meet the
 category said above..

 1. haira haira hairabba from jeans is undoubtedly great but its
more of a
 fun and dance romantic number.
 2. munbe vaa is more female dominated.
 3. tere bina from guru is more male dominated.
 4. swasame from thenali is sweet but a little dry i.e. doesnt
evoke THE
 feeling...
 5. ore rey chori from lagaan is slightly off track jus bcuz of
singer
selection.. (m not a big fan of udit and alka)
 6. sahana saral from sivaji is again off track bcuz of udit again!
7,8. tu hi tho mere dost and tu muskura from yuvraaj are great but
alternate
 male-female combo is missing.
 9. maja maja from SOK is ruled as beauty is absent!
 10. pachai nirame and snethine are romantic numbers and have
immense beauty
to them out as they not duets...
 11. mayilirage from ah aah is a very close miss just bcuz the lack
of
powerful voices (oh, many wud disagree but just my opinion!)
 12. vaaji vaaji from sivaji is more of a fun number rather than
being an
 intense romantic duet number.
13, khamoshiyan from 12ka4 is very close but misses just bcuz of
slightly
off-track combo.. (sonu and lata ji)
 14. ketu rasitha paadal from ATM is nice but its little fast and i
literally
 hate the male voice.

three songs that came close to my heart are

 1. telephone manipol from Indian
 2. ajuba from jeans and
 3. etho etho ondru from e20u18

 very close call
 kuruku chiruthavale from mudhalvan
suntha hi mera kudha from pukar

can all plz help me fill this list.. i feel bad that m able to

only 3 songs that actually meet the criteria i have :(

Actually it was a cell phone message which I received. The news has

That is why I have claimed the news to be confirmed. Is it only a
rumour? My million apologies in case the news is false. I hope
regular listeners of Rahmania show can clarify this.

  ARR...

I was doing my college. I used to be a participant in IIT
Sarang. I'm a
crazy Rahman fan. Interviewer asks So did you think that you
have to
somehow get a chance and sing for Rahman. Karthik replied, No
No...I just
wanted to see him atleast once...I was such a crazy fan. I used
to call the
studios so many times and usually the studio manager or someone
picks and
keeps the phone...It was one of my cousin who was close to
singer srinivas
who got me that golden opportunity to meet Rahman...It was
purely by God's
grace. When I met him, he asked Do you sing? and I said yes
and sang a
song in front of him. He then immediately said, You have a nice
voice. why
don't you choose singing as your career. That was the moment, I
left
everything else and again started practising daily. I was so
happy to hear
that from him. But I didn't get a chance immediately. It was an
interesting
incident and unforgettable even now - The opportunity that I got
to sing for
Rahman...That day was one of my friends birthday...So we a gang
of friends
went out to a snooker parlour and decided to spend till midnight
and give a
surprise birthday gift to our friend...Those days Cellphones
were not that
popular and only one of our friend had...Rahmanji was looking
for some fresh
voices to do a chorus and Singer Srinivas was trying to reach
Tippu, Harish
Raghavendra, Gopalrao etc...When he couldn't get hold of one of
them he
tried reaching my home number...My mom was trying to reach my
friend's cell
phone but unfortunately couldn't reach as the signal was so poor
in the
snooker parlour...Srinivas had atleast tried 8 times to my home
and my mom
started literally crying because she knows how much interest I
was showing
towards singing...It was at 11:45 when we came upstairs, after
3.5 hours, i
got to attend my mom's call and came to know about the call from
the
studio..I took my bike and rushed to the studio...I saw Javed
Akthar sir for
the first time...The movie was Pukar and I had to sing with the
chorus with
Tippu, Harish, and Dr.Narayan. That was my first recording and
it just
  happened in 30 mins and at around 1.00 am, I'm home...I couldn't
just
beleive that I did a recording in Rahmanji's studio...I told all
my friends
but no one beleived...Unfortunately, that song in Pukar didn't
release.
(Does anybody know anything about this unreleased song?) Then I
used to
regularly do some chorus with Tippu and Harish and I was singing
Chorus for
1 year. Rahman always gets confused in identifying Tippu and me.
He always
thought I'm Tippu...One day during a chorus session, Rahman
said, You...the
guy without spectacles, you stay there...others come out. That
was me. I
know he is going to ask me to sing. I thought this is the
opportunity and i
have to prove myself else pack my bags and go back to
studies...He asked to
sing a sad alaap.. I was singing and he was guiding by playing
the
chords...He wanted more cry in the alaap and I just forgot
myself and
started singing continuously, closing my eyes...After a while, I
opened my
eyes to see everyone laughing...Rahman had already standing next
to me and
said Good Job. You did well. Next day, he asked me to come to
the studio
for a track. He said he is going to try something and also said
if it works
well, he will use it. That was the song for the movie Jodi and
the song is
Nendhukittaen Nendhukittaen. I was nervous but Rahman has a
special
capability. He knows what technique to use to extract the work
from the
singers. He sets the right mood to each singer. He started
cutting jokes
with me and made me really comfortable before recording the
song..It took me
45 minutes to complete the song. After the recording, he said,
it's good,
let's see, if it works out, we will use it...This is how I got
my first
  break with Rahman...

The Girl Friend song in boys was really interesting. While
working with
Rahman, you will never know how the song will come out but this
is the one
song that every one of us knew that it's gonna rock...When I
started
recording this song, Rahman interrupted and said, I want you to
sing in a
Blues feel. I smiled and said, I don't know blues, please

he started singing it for me...He said think a saxaphone and

And not just did AR Rahman stop with Roja-with super hits till
today's

them breaks

technicians, he
finds the best and gets the best out of them. His latest find

And to talk more about him, behind almost every new release of

*First things First, how did you meet AR Rahman?*

:) My Dad is a musician. He had worked with ARR from his first
movie and has played an important role in his rhythm
arrangements in
his early albums. After he felt that I have grown up to a level,
after
working with several other music directors, one fine day he
spoke with
ARR and joined me in his team.

*What did you talk with him on your first meeting?*

Not much!! He gave me work through his engineer. It was the
vaaji vaaji
song from Shivaji and at that same time RDB song mixing
was happening on the other side. I programmed the song and
waited for him,
he suddenly appeared heard it, made a few corrections and gave
his feel
of the song and left. Our first few meetings had always been
about work.
It took me RDB background score to actually see more of Rahman
and his
  work.

*Could you enlighten us on your journey before meeting ARR?*

**I was working as a freelance keyboard programmer for many music

Before that,
I completed five grades of music theory and solo piano from

In a recent interview to a tabloid, A R Rahman expressed his
desire to release the Tamil verse collection Thirukkural in rap
format. He replied so when asked what would be his contribution to
the younger generation.

Rahman further mentioned that the project would involve desi Rapper

would be a novel attempt to popularize Tamil literature. As per
Rahman, Blazee would sing Thirukkural in rap version and Carnatic
music would be used to mix in the background. Rahman was also quoted
as saying by the tabloid that he would only produce the album and
music would be rendered by Blazee himself.

of what he
discussed with Raihanaji is as follows :-

Hi. This is Vijay. I am from Mumbai, just moved to Chennai. I
was a big
fan of AR, then became a friend of him, and its my good fortune
that I work
for him now. I am based in Chennai now. Rahman has announced his
new music
label, which is called KM Music. Its a music company. I manage
the Label. I
also do other things like managing the content of his website ,
lot of
  creative stuff etc .

Km Music has been Rahman 's dream, and he has mentioned this in
a lot of
his interviews. The Kind of music he likes... Nowadays, if you
see, all sort
of music is commercialised. and music sales is not that much.
Basically, a
film which has 4 or 5 Kutthu songs are become the pick of the
day ( This was
told by Raihannaji), and thats what sells ( told by Vijay) .
There needs to
be a market for true Music Lovers, and Rahman shares that
feeling, and this
label of his will give an opportunity for him as well as other
musicians to
explore what is not within commercial parameters.

Almost from the time, Roja got released, I have been a fan.
Actually, I
dont know, if I could take you through that journey, I used to
tour Chennai
, in my vacation during my school days. That time Roja cassette
had
released, and my uncle had bought me the same. On the return
journey to
Bombay, I didnt listen to the Roja cassette. My sister was
listening to it
in her walkman. And then she used to say, Its verynice; very
nice . But I
nevr heard it. Then , I was surfing Tv Channels. Then I heard,
Netru
Illadha Maatram . Then I went back to Roja, and thats how the
journey began

Then in 1994, when I came to Chennai, I saw this movie Duet.
The song
Anjali Anjali with awesome interludes and awesome song. In
fact, right
after the movie, I made up my mind, that I want to meet Rahman.
I dont know
if you would remember or not, when I called up the studio, ( the
house ) ,
you answered the phone, and it was you who guided me to the
place. So,
Anjali Anjali is a very good song. I also love the song, Lukka
Chuppi and
want to dedicate to my mother. Rahman 's duet with Lataji. For
the past some
years , you listen only to Love duets, and this is first of its
kind, where
a mother and her son talk to each other in this manner, and its
really nice.

  *Experiences as a FAN *

At that time, there were only cassettes, because the Cds were
expensive.
That too, I was in Bombay. Very rarely, do you get Tamil
cassettes there.
There used to be a store called, Giri Stores, where we used
to get Tamil
cassettes. and I was little far off from this place. At those
times, we
never used to know , when Rahman is releasing a track, as the
internet was
not that prevalent. I used to call the Giri stores almost daily,
to find if
any new release of Rahman had got released. For getting a
cassette worth Rs
50 /-, a lot of phone calls used to be made, and the shop keeper
used to
reply, No Sir. nothing has come . But, I used to make it
sure, that
whenever the cassette got released in Bombay, I used to go 45
minutes by
train, and get the cassette. In fact, right from Pudiya Mugam to
Sakkarakatti, I still remember, how and when I have gone to buy
the
  cassette. That was fantastic.

Towards 2000, when the Internet became popular, we formed a Fan

Dont u guys have shame to compare ARR with Pritam.
Pritam doesnt even have a single hit song of his own. All are

Yeah man even I was thinking about it. Before we had ARR vs
jatin

lalit, nadeem shravan, anu malik etc. and now we have ARR vs
pritam,

vishal shekhar, shanka ehsaan loy. Arr has overcome before. I m
sure he

  will overcome now also inshaAllah.

Rightly said. And it is telling enough that you forgot to add one
more

guy in the list - Himmesh Reshammiya. What a meteoric rise and
what a

disappearing act he did, all within a span of one year or so.

You list further clarifies that JL is now forgotten, NS are also
not in

news, and AM is not any popular now. But our man still stands tall
unshaken.
