Hi guys,

Just coming from the pre-screening of Slumdog Millionaire. It's a

great movie, very different... very realistic. I would recommend

everyone to watch it. I was lucky enough to get two seats for the

pre-screening in Los Angeles. I went with my friend, I was not

expecting the theater to be full since it's not a mainstream American

movie. But to my surprise there was a huge line just to get in, and

we barely saw any Indians... It was an all American audience. The

direction and storytelling is awesome, along with some brilliant

acting. Now coming to the BGM... Rahman has given an excellent score

for the movie.

The background music really compliments the movie well. M.I.A was

featured at least a couple or more times throughout the movie. There

are many fantastic BGM pieces used throughout the movie apart from

what is played in the trailers. The romantic piece played on Jamal

and Latika is simply awesome, it's a female voice humming.. I couldn't

figure out who. I had a big wrestler type dude crying next to me

during one of these scenes. The music was truly moving and added a lot

of emotions to the scenes.

Regarding what the reviewers and critics had said about the ending...

it's true.. about 97% of people stayed glued to their seats as the End

credits started rolling.. with the Jai Ho song by Sukhwinder and some

dance sequence with a huge crowd.

The song... well, I was not too impressed by it... it's an average

song by Rahman standard but not very good or best.. may be because I

was hearing it the first time? But hey, the people seemed to love it.

And when they showed Music composed by A.R. Rahman towards the end...

people cheered and clapped! Well, that made my day. We can expect

more high profile international projects from Rahman, thanks to this

movie. Let's hope it bags the Oscars for music.

Go watch the movie and let's hope Fox Searchlight decides to release

the soundtrack of the movie.

Nice to hear the first first-hand feelings from one of our own.

If it is a single song, I have lost my all hopes that music Cassette/ CD
would ever release in India.

Re: [arr] JAI HO! - Just watched Slumdog Millionaire

2008-11-04 Thread kaissiom
The cheering or clapping from audience does not equate to them being
fans. When you go watch a performance or a show and you enjoy it, you
express your appreciation by cheering/clapping for whoever the artist
or the performer is, regardless of whether you know them or not.

I never said they are Rahman fans, they enjoyed the entire movie; the
direction, the acting, the music..etc. Music was an essential
component of this movie. When they showed Original Music Composed by
A.R. Rahman... people cheered and clapped... to express they like the
music.. whoever had made it. I'm sure many of them had not heard of
that name before, nevertheless they appreciated the movie/music and
hence cheered and clapped for the composer.

You are right, Americans are not used to or don't appreciate much
music in their movies... they call them musicals. But this is an
Indian movie, and Indian movies here are infamous for being all
musical with dance sequences involving hundreds of people. So, the
music in this Indian movie is expected. In fact, the Jai Ho song is a
pun or a stereotypical joke intended to make people laugh.. because
the entire movie goes without any song-dance sequence and THEN at the
very end when the movie is done.. The End the actors start sing and
dancing.. the whole theater started laughing, including me.. so
stereotypical of a Bollywood movie.. that's why people stay and watch
the end credits and then cheer and clap for the composer - Go Rahman!

FYI: M.I.A is a Sri Lankan artist brought up in U.K. I like her
music; she uses some wicked Afro-Indian rhythms and beats, although
most of her lyrics are gibberish. Check out her Galang and Bucky
Done Gun, those are my favorite.
