[arr] Raavanan : Usure Pohuthey
Listening to Usure for the 'n'th time now and those butterflies are still fluttering in my stomach! Wow WOw Wow! Raw, eccentric and passionate. Vairamuthu hasn't been better than this in recent times! En kattaiyum oru naal saayalam En kannula un mugam pohuma , he makes Veera ask. And that's exactly how the movie ends! This song is like an amazing rollercoaster ride for me: the way it builds up gradually in tempo from theku marak kaadu to usure pohuthey and then back again to the indha olahathil. Then the jamming that goes on during the pambha viludha lines. Haunting stuff. This song is my definition of a perfect song: soul stirring music by AR, complemented beautifully by Vairamuthu's lyrics and Karthik's vocals. A Perfect package.
[arr] Raavanan unreleased tracks?
Gopal put a tracklist a while back, including some interesting titles like Mystic Traveler by Seenu. I'm dying to hear these! When will these be out??

[arr] Raavanan - Watch it for the Visuals!
Watch Raavanan for these: + Breathtaking visuals + Good BGM + Some of the poetic, romance oriented scenes between Vikram and Aishwarya + Last 15 minutes towards the climax (play between the lead characters) + Vikram + The idea. While you watching it, you have to tolerate these: - Scene setup is inappropriate most of the times. (No clear answer for Where it is happening? and Why it is happening?) - The climax has several flaws obviously. (Why is he alone? Where are the rest of the Veera's people? How Dev comes to him with a group of policemen without Veera noticing it?) - Characters are making fun of themselves (When vikram says the 'tan tan..' verse, not sure what the director is trying to convey but we are laughing at it.) - Most of the time it is artificial, due to the dialogues and the slang that is followed. (However, Vikram and Prabhu are good to watch) - Could have followed the original Ramayanam script completely. (Directorial brilliance show off when you have the challenge of telling the story to the audience afront but still you keep them interested till the end. Here, it is a failure.) - If the director intends to refer Ramayanam, he could have done it in a better way. (Director spoiled Karthik's role by poorly showing him which is not relating to the current world; However, the director made it good for the Vibhishana character. Remember he has done it brilliantly in Thalapathi.) I think, it would be better Mani try to take an extraordinary tamil movie and then show to the world what he had done, which he is really good at it (like Naayagan, Thalapathi, Roja, Bombay, Kannathil Muthamittal). People will always watch good films no matter what is the language. That should be the spirit of the director. He wasted his spirit in trying to create three different versions at the same time. He can very well avoid wasting time creating more versions at the same time which is, I think, only a marketing pressure. If he had concentrated only on the tamil version, he could have avoided most of these minuses and made us a wonderful movie. This movie is a perfect example where a brilliant director, who is capable of producing long lasting art, being wasted for reasons like marketing pressure, and inappropriate ambitions. Raavanan - Watch it for the Visuals!

[arr] Raavanan
Just back from watching the tamil version. Here are my thoughts - Pros:- 1. great cinematography. 2. Great action sequences (but some were really really bad too) 3. the second half of the movie is fast paced. 4. A wonderful climax. the kind you have never seen in Indian cinema. 5. the last song (tamil version of ja re ud ja re and probably the hindi version too). - I wish the entire BGM was like this instead of the loud jarring sound that were played whenever Veera got angry. Cons :- 1. Wrong choice of music. while the music was great as an album - in fact, it is one of my favorite albums of AR to come out recently, but this kind of movie needed less songs in my opinion. There is absolutely no need for it. it hurts the narration badly. 2. I have to agree with some reviewers in the newspaper about the BGM. It was jarring at times. don't get me wrong. the movie may have some great music in the background, but they were played all the time! some times it is too loud and sudden that it feels so unnecessary and disturbing.. without adding anything to the scene that is played in the movie. But i can't blame AR for it. it is ultimately Mani's decision to choose what kind of music he wants in his movie. he could have picked a more subtle score. 3. Unnecessary characters - The hanuman guy, the elder brother (Prabhu), and some minor characters that were shown here and there were boring. they added nothing to the story. while prabhu was nice to watch, karthik's over acting was so boring. and that sound that he makes every time he jumps from one tree to the other - disgusting.. thought iwas watching some low budget comedy! 4. Some jumping and falling scenes were not done properly and felt like it was done using a rope or something. 5. Bad editing - it was really bad. so bad that it hurts the eyes. 6. the first half of the movie is really boring. there were people complaining about lack of logic in some scenes like why Ragini was on the boat ? well, i think that mani has deleted some scenes to reduce the time. there could have been some explanation about why she was on the boat etc.. but he might have chose to cut it. But is it still good ? yeah.. sort of.. it has one of kind of action and climax in the second half.. a beautiful ending scene, and wow.. the photography.. I will be watching the hindi version too.. I understand hindi better than tamil. so, i probably would be able to comment on the dialogues and all later on. but you know what..? it is worth the money. even if it's only for the last scene and great action sequences.. you will certainly like it. oh btw, Vikram Prithwiraj were pretty good as actors. --- http://roshanravi.com http://ramblingsoul.com http://cssheaven.org

[arr] Raavanan was OUTSTANDING and ARRs score perfectly blended in with the movie
best Mani movie since Kannathil Muthamittal (2002)...i think the reason why a lot of people are not liking Raavan is b/c of Abhishek's acting...no need to worry about that here b/c when Vikram plays a role, he's always perfectthe songs I didn't like in the soundtrack were elevated by their compatibility with the moviedef. watch it...also...Raavanan is being screened w/ english subs worldwide so if you don't know tamil (like me)...u can still enjoy it!
[arr] Raavanan Review
http://www.indiaglitz.com/channels/tamil/review/10848.html Raavanan - Ten Faced Persona IndiaGlitz [Friday, June 18, 2010] Mani Ratnam returns to spread magic (or a blunder, as this review progresses) with his ‘Raavanan’ after a splendid show in the form of ‘Guru’. Well lets be positive to some extent now, his team is world class, with Santosh Sivan behind the lens, Srikar Prasad on the editor’s table and A R Rahman handling the music and besides that the stellar star cast! The movie looked like a bouquet of flowers but only the fragrance seemed to fade! Now moral of the story – Never go by hype! Wondering why we started with the moral so soon, well that is what ‘Raavanan’ is all about! It is a celluloid adaptation of ‘Ramayana’ written by sage Valmiki (and interestingly, no name is displayed for ‘the story’ when the titles are showed.) with modern publicity techniques that will attract the audience. Let’s get to the analysis part and wrap this review up as soon as possible, because the movie is just above 2 hours. And about wrapping it soon, anyone among the audience will tell you to get out of the hall as soon as possible once the movie is over! Mani Ratnam, the master of creating art on celluloid has possibly over worked to make a disappointment! He is class apart no doubt but his class on screen is visible only in parts. He has delicately portrayed bits and pieces of modern day Ramayana. Well nothing offending here but Ramayana is a story that is imbibed in to our lives from childhood, seems like this movie was shot to associate every scene with the happenings in the holy epic. Characterisation and Performances Suhasini Maniratnam pens the dialogues of the movie. Her dialogues are intelligent, credible and most importantly, conveying information. Characters and their strengths are informed through these wonderful dialogues. The homework seems to have been done well. Mani Ratnam has sketched his characters amazingly. Every character has a purpose and every actor behind the character has been rightly cast. . Leave alone the fact he was inspired from Ramayana but here in this, the Raavanan is the hero. The title role is played by Vikram (like you didn’t know). He is Veera alias Veeraiah. A tribal leader who’s fighting for their rights. He is strong, genuine and loyal to his tribe. Even other characteristics of his are mentioned through an enquiry scene where the police talk to the tribals to find out what kind of a person this Veera is. Vikram’s performance is simply electric. The next in line is Prithvi Raj, who’s the dynamic Superintendent of Police. He is oozing with confidence as an actor and his chemistry with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is good enough on screen. He makes it quite obvious as being the Rama in this story. So you know the strings attached. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s characterization is simple. She is a loving wife who has been abducted (did we leak the story now?) and her expressions from thereon are simply amazing. She is beautiful on screen (sure is) and has come out with a noticeably extraordinary performance. Only a certain part of the credit goes to her, the rest goes to Mani for getting the best out of her. The other supporting characters like Karthik( apparently Hanuman) as a forest officer, Prabhu as Vikram’s older brother, Munna as Vikram’s younger brother and others are impressively handled characters. The director has made sure all the characters receive the deserved importance. Mani Ratnam is the master unarguably; he has made sure the actors have their presence felt on screen. At this predicament of the review, Priya Mani as Vikram’s step sister has done a commendable job. Her character as a bold sister to the strong brother is much appreciable. Her performance will definitely be applauded and as she’s playing the same role in the Hindi version, she has made an excellent start in her Bollywood journey. Technicalysis Technically speaking, Editor Srikar Prasad has sharp scissors. The screenplay in the first half, though nothing has been conveyed and is an utter waste of film reels, his editing is near precision. Stunts and bomb work by Peter Heines and Shyam Kaushal deserve appreciation and so is art director Sameer’s work, given the fact that most of the movie was shot in and around water. The tribal village, the police camp, a bridge and a marriage set were simply amazing and he would be one technician to make note of. The fight on the bridge just before the climax is an edge-of-the-seat scene that has been well shot and well directed. But there is one man who will be applauded for his work (perhaps the only respite in the movie) is Santosh Sivan and his camera work! Mani’s movies always have natural lighting and Santosh has used it to good effect. Green pastures, water falls, rivers, trees, and all that nature can offer in a forest are radiantly shown. Hats of Santosh, you’ve done a splendid job!

Story Line: Vikaram Kidnaps Aish(wife of Prithivraj - Police) to take Revenge for her sister's (priyamani) Suicide. But Vikram fall in Love wth Aish.. Meanwhile Prithiv chasing Vikram n Fights with him to rescue her(Like Ramayanam). My Note: PLUS: Cinematography is Excellent. Rahmanji's BackGround Score is Wonderfull. Aish, Vikram, Prabhu Karthik's Performance are good. Dialagoues by Suhasini are very good.. Unexpected Climax. MINUS: Mani sir wasted Rahmanji's songs.. Veera Veera as TiTle Song..??? - Unacceptable. Vikram singing 'Usera Poguthe' suddenly(within 10th min of the film) after seeing Aish.. Since the lyrics are very touching n powerfull, this song should come after interval.. Then After interval, 'Kodu Potta' n 'KedaKari' coming back to back in 4 r 5 minutes.. Lots n Lots of Unfinished Knots.. Editing not done properly.. My Note: Cinematography is very good. Background Score by A R Rahmanji is boosting the film. A different showpiece by Manirathnam.. but not his best this time.. *Raavanan Censored: Clean 'U'* Ambili [June 4, 2010, 6:17:59 PM] [image: Raavanan Censored: Clean 'U'] And the wait seems to be over now! Yes, we are talking about ace director Mani Ratnam's big budget extravagance *Raavanan* (*Raavan* in Hindi and dubbed in Telugu as *Villain*). The latest we hear is that the Censor Board has awarded an 'U' certificate** without any cuts. The Hindi version (* Raavan*) is likely to goto the censors today (June 4). *Raavanan*, said to be the modern adaptation of the epic Ramayana, revolves around Raavana, the ruler of Lanka, who kidnapped Sita. The story culminates with Sita supporting Raavana instead of Rama, who suspects her chastity after having spent so much time in Raavana’s custody. Vikram plays the villain. Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai are the lead pair in Hindi, while Vikram will play the lead opposite Aishwarya in Tamil. Music is by Oscar winner A.R. Rahman. *Raavanan* is produced by Mani Ratnam's sister Sharda under Ratnam's banner Madras Talkies. http://telugu.galatta.com/entertainment/telugu/livewire/id/Raavanan_Censored_Clean_U_39263.html -- - Regards ~ ~ A.R.Rajib ~ ~

[arr] Raavanan - The Real Hero
Raavanan - The Real HeroIndiaGlitz [Wednesday, May 12, 2010] Perhaps this is the most anticipated film in recent times. Rightly so given the cast and crew assembled. Produced and directed by Mani Ratnam, ‘Raavanan’ stars Vikram, Aishwarya Rai and Prithviraj in the lead roles. The other cast comprises Prabhu, Karthik, Priyamani, Ranjitha, Munna and others. ‘Raavanan’ is inspired from the Asokavanam episode in Ramayanam. It is a modern day version of the episode where Raavanan kidnaps Sita and keeps her in Asokavanam. Later Raman ventures to save his wife and bring her back. The story of ‘Raavanan’ is said to be this. Dev (Prithviraj) is a police officer who falls in love with a classical dancer Ragini (Aishwarya Rai) and marries her. Post marriage Dev is posted in a tribal town controlled by Veera (Vikram) whose writs alone control the people of the town. Veera, the warlord is seen as challenger and the law enforcers lead by Dev believe the key to bringing order to the place is to crush Veera. In an attempt to vanquish Vikram, Prithviraj misses the target and kills Priyamani who is the sister of Vikram. An infuriated, Vikram kidnaps Aishwarya Rai and takes her into the forest. This draws Prithviraj into the forest and the forest becomes their battle ground. The dense, confusing and scary jungle sets in motion a string of events which test their beliefs and change their fortunes. When Prithviraj finds Aishwarya in the jungle he suspects her womanhood. A new battle then begins which becomes a battle between good and evil; Raavanan and Raman and at the end they all confront many truths. You can be sure of a startling climax typical of the creative genius Mani Ratnam. So how are the characters in Ramanyam linked? Prithviraj plays a character inspired by Raman, Vikram enacts the role of Raavanan and Aishwarya the role of Sita. The supporting characters are also worked out something like this. Karthik is the modern day Hanuman and Munna is the brother Lakshmanan. Priyamani plays the role of Raavanan's sister Soorpanakai. The role played by Prabhu and Ranjitha are not known yet. ‘Raavanan’ brings together Prabhu and Karthik after more than a decade. The have the same fire they had in ‘Agni Natchathram’. Vikram has said “Acting in ‘Raavanan’ is like being part of three Mani Ratnam projects, because, each and every scene was shot thrice” Aishwarya also has an equally powerful role. Probably this is the film which would bring out the real talents of Aishwarya. The contemporary and modern Indian classical dancer Astad Deboo has choreographed a climactic life and death dance sequence with a tandav of passion, revenge and liberation for Ash. This is a fusion of kathak, ballet and contemporary dance which will show Ash in a new light. The steps are complex and new and Ash had danced bare feet on slippery ground. She also did the steps twice over and in quick succession, first with Abhishek for the Hindi and then with Vikram for the Tamil. Another surprise from Aishwarya is going to be her voice in Tamil. Ash has painstaking dubbed her voice for Tamil and nobody will be able to say she is not a Tamilian after hearing her speak. And making her more beautiful in the film is the celebrated fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee who has designed clothes for Ash in ‘Raavanan’. The film was extensively shot in numerous locations around India including Pollachi, Ooty, Chalakudy, Athirapally of Kerala, Jhansi, Kolkata, Mahabaleshwar and in the Malshej Ghats in Maharashtra. Picturesque locations like the forest near the Athirapally waterfalls in Kerala is going to be real treat to the eyes. Athirapally waterfalls seem to be Mani's favourite location as had filmed ‘Uyire’ song “Ennuyire”, and the ‘Guru’ song “Venmegam” at the same location earlier. The cinematography is by Santosh Sivan, who replaced Manikandan as the cameraman and he has given the film a never before seen look and feel. Mani Ratnam – Santosh Sivan duo has worked wonders before in blockbuster like ‘Roja’, ‘Thalapathi’, ‘Iruvar’ and ‘Uyire’. ‘Raavanan’ has numerous action scenes of the Kerala martial art form kalarippayattu. Kalatipattu exponents Sunil and his brothers who have trained celebrities like SRK and Jackie Chan have composed the action scenes. ‘Raavanan’ is a tri-lingual also made simultaneously in Hindi as ‘Raavan’ and ‘Villain’ in Telugu. With Abhiskek Bachchan playing the title role and Vikram plays the role of Rama. Aishwarya Rai plays the role of Sita in all three versions. Audience expects ‘Ravannan’ to be the best of Mani till date. By raising intriguing questions on the protagonist like did such a man ever exist? Is ‘Raavanan’ the line that divides Good from Evil? Is there a Ram inside Raavan? And a Raavan inside each of us? Mani Ratnam has opened our minds to question our conscience. Music of the movie is composed by Oscar winner A R Rahman with lyrics penned by Vairamuthu. It features 6 songs and the music was soft launched

I agree Gomzy, but still... whats the point if some fantastic compositions are lying unused in a computer. Asha Bhonsle's song didnt make it to the album. Ja Re Ud Ja Re also. Even Maniratnam's previous film Guru faced same thing. A song originally picturised on Aishwarya riding a bicycle didnt make it to the album, because it had to be deleted in the film. I think the best place for them will be the DVD. That way it won't tamper with our movie experience because by the time we buy the DVD, we'd have watched the movies ( a zillion times in my case!) and the additional songs and their role in the movie wouldn't make much of an impact on our take on the movie's narration etc. So please, give it to us in the DVD. please. Re: [arr] Raavanan
I agree with Aakarsh and I really don't feel that many would be complaining if we heard the songs on CD that were not seen in the film, because to me at least, that would be bonus material, and I would treat them like ARR's private works, like his material in Connections. Most of us care mostly about ARR's music, the CD, with hopes that the songs are picturized well, so having bonus songs on the CD that would not be on film would be greeted as a pleasant surprise by most of us. --- In arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com, Aakarsh aakarsh...@... wrote: I agree Gomzy, but still... whats the point if some fantastic compositions are lying unused in a computer. Yeah but that disappointment of not seeing them would pale in comparison to not having to listen to them at all. For example the majority of the songs in D6 were edited out to smaller numbers. While a few people objected to this, having full songs on the CD is a much desirable option than not having them at all or having smaller versions of the songs on the CD . And also Be happy with you got is not exactly palatable. If I were to attend a feast with 100 items on the table and my host would tell me that only one particular item is off limits to me I would crave just for that item the most. [arr] Raavanan and Raavan (yet another comparison!): Role of lyrics
Note:Like, Gayathri,I am going to warn you. This e-mail is Long and perhaps largely incoherent. Apologies in advance This thing about lyrics. Well I am one who firmly believes that music has no language. I have fallen for all of AR’s hindi work without understanding what the lyrics meant and only out of curiosity do I go and read up translations much later. But there are some songs for which I still don’t know the meaning to. For eg Jashne Bahara- probably the most played melody from recent AR albums for me. I fell in love with it when I saw the promo for the first time. I know the hindi lyrics by heart now but haven’t got a clue as to what it means but it won’t stop me from picking it over a tamil song. So music for me really has no language. And perhaps for most of you as well. What about all the beautiful classical music pieces we’ve heard from the past. The most heart wrenching pieces from Bach, Hayden, Beethovan, Mozart, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky, Chopin, Brahms, Wagner etc. The many operas in French, German, Italian and many other languages we are not fluent in.What draws them to us? Music. But when you are given two tunes that are largely the same with two sets of lyrics with one being your mother tongue, one cannot but be drawn to pick out the difference and perhaps a favourite. Especially when you have Gulzar and Vairamuthu. My grasp of hindi is , well let me say “thoda thoda”(!) but having read some wonderful, in-depth translations here and elsewhere for some lovely AR-Gulzar gems, I have developed a deep respect for Gulzar. One song that comes to mind instantly is Chalka Re. Loved what he did there! For me what he writes is poetry, just like Vairamuthu. It’s like they transport me to a different era/world. Behene De in Raavan - my fav track in terms of lyrics. Loving every line in this song- it's deep. It's emotional and it pulls you straight into Raavan's mind. I haven't been able to absorb the lyrics of the other songs to the extent that I can remember the meaning of each line when I play the song (like Behene De) but I am getting there. Behene De however is my second favourite in the album in terms of the entire package (music+lyrics). Probably because I made too much of an effort to understand the lyrics that somehwere I got a bit tired of making the effort. As for Usire pogudhe, I have fallen truly, madly, deeply in love! The lyrics are Raw and it's been a while since I heard something like this. Some lines that drew me on the first hearing : Maamen thavikkiren madi pichai thaadi en manikuyile Akkarai cheemayil nee irundhum, ai viral theendida nenaikuthadi Akkini palam endru therinchirunthum adikadi naaku thudikuthadi en kattaiyum oru naal saayalam en kaanula un mugam poguma Beautiful! I am loving the dialect and the depth in these lines. Amazing, Vairamuthu! Genius! It easily makes Usire pogudhey my fav Raavanan track in terms of both music and lyrics by miles! Love Love Love it! Too short! (I know what you mean now, Chord!) Ranjha Ranjha - I am absolutely in love with and haven't got a clue as to what they are on about for most part of the song. But strangely it's my favourite song in Raavan and I can't get enough of it. I like the rawness Rekha brings to it and the contrasting soothing voice in Javed Ali.It's been on loop since day 1. everyone has a special song in a ARR-Mani album and this one is my special song in Raavan. As for Kaatu Sirruki - I think Anuradha and Shankar have changed the flavour of the song slightly. I find an extra portion of rawness from both singers especially Shankar. Having gotten used to having Javed sing his parts like a dainty ballerina, I am struggling to adjust to Shankar's hard ways. Anuradha is one of my fav singers and I am glad AR used her here. Oddly I really like what she has done here (I see I am in the minority here) and also Shankar despite his different take on the song but that's the advantage of having the same song sung by different singers- they bring different packages to the table. Vocally, I am glad we have Anuradha and Shankar singing for us but what has let me down in Kaatu sirukki is the lyrics- not the contents but that the lyrics somehow seemed forced to fit the tune in some of the major lines in the song. For eg yar kaatu chirukki iva in the first line. It gets repeated throughout the song reminding us that these songs were written for another language. It's a distraction. Kata kata - what a track ! Power power power! And the lyrics are awesome too (having read through Rawat's translations a few times). It's my third fav track in the album. It’s my Veerapandiya Kottaiyile equivalent in Raavan. Love it. Keda Kari- I don’t how AR does it but when I heard this one I could relate it instantly to a southy wedding. After listening to Kata Kata so many times I couldn’t help but think that the tamil version will be a misfit in Raavanan but
