I got the Sivaji/Hits of Shankar CD from Ayngaran, which sounds good to me. Indian classical music conventions might be helping him to structure and organize his creativity, as they have for countless composers. Lately he seems to have realized it himself. Since I do not listen to Tamil or Telugu songs my opinions are formed based on his Hindi output alone. His work suffers from his earlier occupation as a jingle maker. More often than not he composes riveting mukhdas and then the song freewheels into nothing. I became aware of this when I realized that for majority of ARR's songs, I can remember the mukhdas very well, but not the stanzas. For instance I remember Rang de ha rang de mujhe apane preet wich rang de as a very catchy beginning but do not remember how rest of the song goes. I have the same difficulty with many others, even with one as recent as Mitwa sun mitwa. It is as if he is at loss after a promising start(in songs and his career). This selective memory can not be attributed to possible lack of interest in a particular song. If one were not interested in the song, one would tend to forget the whole thing. I don't know whether I am fitting observation to theories or theories to observation. AR Rahman is awe-inspiring when he sticks to tunes of Indian origins. (I can not define Indian Origin.). Tu hi re, Ghanan Ghanan, Pal pal hai bhaari, Chhalka chhalka re, chupke se are some songs that I remember and like effortlessly. Indian classical music conventions might be helping him to structure and organize his creativity, as they have for countless composers. Lately he seems to have realized it himself. His songs in Lagaan, Saathiya and Swades are more likely to be remembered in the next decade as compared to his earlier output. regards, Sunil Yahoo!
