Re: Version 7.0.01 Patch 005 for BMC ARS - Server running on Solaris

2007-11-09 Thread Emad Zaky
My issue with Patch 4 was :
a) Requencing of tasks
b) Deleting an alternate approver

They both crashed the server, and I tracked it down to the execution of the

Application-Query-Delete-Entry

I installed Patch 5 and tested and the issue went away. I haven't seen
anything funny so far

Re: SLM - Pay to upgrade from SLA - Anybody fight this and win?

2007-11-01 Thread Emad Zaky
I won the battle twice
I think your argument should focus on why should we pay if the product is
discontinued?. More features doesn't account for a purchase (look at the
features from ITSM 6 to 7)...

It would be helpful to throw in a little incentive, like a promise of future
Remedy expansion, licenses etc

If worse comes to worse, you may need to review all the license agreements
and similar cases in other BMC products
My personal opinion is that this is unfair...

Emad

 Jack:

We were in the same position earlier this year but lost the battle. As
our sales rep explained it, they discontinued the older product (SLA
6.0) and were no longer going to upgrade or support it. To appease our
complaining, they offered us the new product (SLM 7.0) at zero cost - we
just had to pay the difference in maintenance for the balance of our
annual contract (i.e. the difference between the unused portion of SLA
maintenance and the pro-rated expense for the new product). It's my
understanding that this was a one-time offer that had to be processed
 by June 30, 2007.

Note that none of the above mentions functionality or features, it was
simply a product direction decision. If I were you, I would question my
sales rep as to why they didn't work with you to take advantage of the
one-time offer. Even though you weren't ready to move to 7.x at that
time, it obviously would have to been to your advantage to process the
SLA to SLM migration before June '07.

Okay, so here's the deal. We've owned SLA for many years and always
paid maintenance. All we really needed was a simple escalation tool.
Now we're upgrading to 7 and they're saying we have to pay another $30k
plus maintenance (80% discount I guess) to upgrade to 7 because it has
 extra features.

 =3D20

We've been paying for maintenance, which entitles us to an upgrade. If
they want to throw in a bunch of bells and whistles (none of which we
need), they should either have an SLM light that we can upgrade to for
free or a free upgrade to the full blown SLM.

 =3D20

Am I crazy here or ? Anybody else have this problem? Anybody else go
to the mattresses w/ BMC? How'd it turn out?

** A workaround in case its a bug and you cannot use the
Application-Query-Delete-Entry would be to use Application-Delete-Entry
using a AL guide. Use the AL guide to loop through the records that have to
be deleted, and pick the Entry ID of each of these records and use the
Application-Delete-Entry to delete the individual entries while the workflow
 runs through that loop..

You may require to build a table field to have that guide run through that
 loop.

 Jarl,

For some reason I actually think this is an old bug that has returned.
I would suggest that you push BMC a bit to see if they can find an old bug
related to this failure. If they can find it then they should reopen that
old bug and tack more time on it. ( IMO )

An old ARSList post also suggests this:

 Thomas Bean
 date: Nov 7, 2005 3:50 PM

 snip

In general, these seem to be the basic rules for creating the search
qualification for this run process command:

 1. The form name parameter does not need to be enclosed in double-quotes
unless the form name contains spaces.
 2. In the qualification, any fields in the target form need to be
referenced by their field ID enclosed in single quotes. Fields from the
current form need to be referenced by the field name enclosed by dollar
 signs, enclosed by double-quotes.
 3. Parentheses can be added around qualification elements for clarity.

Maybe if you update the action to use field ID's the problem could be
 avoided?

 Subject: Application-Query-Delete-Entry and server crash...

 Hi,

We see that the server crash when running this active link:
 INT:CHGTMS:CRQ:ChangeSequence_OneLevelUp_ReBuildFlow

This does a Set Field with a $PROCESS\$
 Application-Query-Delete-Entry.

If we change the active link to do a Run Process
 @@:Application-Query-Delete-Entry, this shows up in
 arerror.log:

Failure during an attempt to perform an application command (ARERR
 4554)Application-Query-Delete-Entry TMS:Flow ..

 ARS 7.01 patch 4
 Solaris 9
 Oracle 9
 ITSM7 patch 4

Running patch 2 also crash the server, but then its the notify
 function that crash the server...

Try it on an Active Link with a user having non-admin permissions but having
permissions on the Active Link
That is the condition I found which causes issues.

For out-of-the-box workflow that uses this type of AL try: Changing Task
sequence using the up-down arrows beside the table-field on a change
request (not sure whether the same is on incidents or not)

configuration setting that contributes to this that I may not have?

 Hi All,

It seems that the culprit in this error is the execution of the $PROCESS$

 Application-Query-Delete-Entry

 On active Links.

True enough we are now able to replicate the crash

Hopefull this will be fixed in Patch 5 :(:

Hi,
The TMS:Task form Task User permissions on the fields became read-only. We

We also noticed in the Roles form not all computed groups are showing...We

That Stupid CTM:AuditLogSystem Form!!!

2007-09-04 Thread Emad Zaky
Hi All,

I hate the CTM:AuditLogSystem form.
It grows and grows with useless data...never stops...
It has reached 1.4 million records and counting.

I would like to delete the entries because backups take 2 hours now. I can't
do it from the User tool, I tried to delete using ARUtilities, but
nothing...an hour glass and the number of records is the same...

So any ideas, how can I do it from the DB level?

!HELP! - SLM does not move from attached status

Hi,
ORacle 10g
Solaris 10
SLM 7.0.3
AR system 7.0.1 Patch 3
ITSM Patch 4

I tried creating a bunch of SLA's and the correctly attach themselves to the
incident and the status is attached. The problem is they never move from
this status.

I checked the generated filters and noticed this qualification on the
milestone filter:

( 'Status' Resolved) AND ( 'zD_TADOccurred' =
SL221932505200RtLo4wBSSHQABaYA )

The problem is that on the Help Desk form the value 'zD_TADOccurred' is
always null so this filter does not fire.

Anyone seen this before??

Re: ARS7 install with oracle 10G RAC ... the saga continues ... KM-000010001381 (UNCLASSIFIED)

For performance of applications on a single server it is ok. But I have
noticed that if you run 2 AR servers with ITSM apps you get timeouts.

Emad

On 7/10/07, HARTWICK, SCOTT G CTR DISA JSSC [EMAIL PROTECTED]
wrote:

Classification: UNCLASSIFIED

We have been having performance issues with our Oracle installation and
found this KM article with some ideas on how to improve performance and
initial configuration:

*
The following is information for ITSM 7.0.x installs within an Oracle
environment:
1. Have your DBA set the SGA Size to min 250 and max 850.
2. Also, Knowledge Base entry KM-10001381 should prove to be
helpful to you:
*
PROBLEM:
Below are some settings which have been helpful for Oracle customers to
avoid ARERR 91, 92, 93, 94 timeout issues, especially during application
installations

SOLUTION:
   1) AR Server version 7.01 or AR Server version 6.03 patch 19
The above version or later contain new method of Oracle client
calls which enhance performance

 2) For Oracle 9i or 10g customer:
add CURSOR_SHARING=FORCE to the Oracle init file,

 3) For Oracle 9i or 10g customer: add the following parameters to
ar.conf or ar.cfg
 Oracle-Cursor-Sharing: FORCE

 4) For all Windows (with 2 CPU) customers, Suggest to assign
private RPC to RE (in ar.conf or ar.cfg)
  RE-RPC-Socket: 390621
  Private-RPC-Socket: 390621 10 10

  For UNIX platforms,
  RE-RPC-Socket: 390621
  Private-RPC-Socket: 390621 6 6

As always, turning of your database and ARServer is a task for your dba,
system administrator and Remedy administrator working in concert. The
settings above have proved helpful in several cases, but they should be
used as a starting point for investigation rather than standard
configuration applicable in all environments.

A defect SW00254374 has been logged for Engineering to consider whether
this information or an official recommendation should be included in the
shipped product docs.

The issue is widespread, esp. with a remote Oracle db. Our servers are
switched with fiber/gb. Even if I have 2 vm's runnning on the same
physical host (one db and one ars), I see the same issue. The packet
logs do not show a problem with throughput and my switches show no
congestion.

   The problem does
not seem to be in the way that the query to the db, but in the way
 the results are processed.

  I don't know about that.
If the problem was the way that arserverd is processing the results
of the query, why would startup be like 1 minute when the db is on
 the same box?

My bet is that this has something to do with the way that arserverd
is connecting to oracle ... perhaps incorrect use of the api? All that

waiting between queries really makes me think there's a timeout

remotely when the local connection times out.

Man, this is why I sometimes hate dealing with proprietary software.
If this was open, you could bet someone would have fixed it by now,

 ourselves.

The issue is widespread, esp. with a remote Oracle db. Our servers are
switched with fiber/gb. Even if I have 2 vm's runnning on the same
physical host (one db and one ars), I see the same issue. The packet
logs do not show a problem with throughput and my switches show no

Hello everyone:

I've managed to get through the (incredibly flawed) solaris 10 arsystem 7
install.
This is 7.0.01 patch 2.

I'm using oracle 10G client library with a remote database on an oracle 10
Rapid Application Cluster.

So ... now the server is INCREDIBLY slow to start.

The server is configured to run on a TCP port (1).
When I issue the 'arsystem start' command, I get the usual output on the
console indicating that the server has started.

However, the TCP port is not listening, and of course, no clients can
connect to the server.

If I wait (approx 7 minutes), I will see the following output on the
console:

  (ARNOTE 0)
   Server indicates that it's up.

 (ARNOTE 0)
   ARMonitor child process (pid:29595) started.
./arplugin

Loaded Web Services plugin properly

After the above, the TCP port opens up and clients can connect, and it
seems to work well enough.

What I presume is happening here is that arserverd must issue some sort of
indication that it's completed start up so that arforkd and armonitor can do
their thing and start listeners and plugins, and that arserverd is for some
reason taking on average 7 minutes to do that.

I can't manage to get ANY sort of logging during the 7 minutes of mystery.
is there some way to figgure out what the heck is going on durring this
period of time (is it timing out DNS? is the db slow to respond? is it
waiting on disk access? what is it doing?).

We have an identical set up in our dev lab, with the exception that the
database server is not a RAC and it's installed on the same machine. The
startup is quite snappy on that setup.

There don't appear to be any issues with network latency between the
remedy server and the RAC.

Anyone ever seen this before?
Any suggestions?

thanks,

Andrew

Interesting!
Is your DB remote or local?
Are all the apps customized or are there any Remedy Apps as well?
Do you have the CMDB, Assignment Engine, Approval Engine installed?
Did you migrate the Database from a different server or was it a clean

4500 is in the approval server error message range if I am not
mistaken. The error indicates that the application dispatcher process
died, not the arserverd process. Make sure that the application
pending for exists, then check for weird data in that form. There may
be data from the old system that doesn't agree with the new one.

A word of advice, don't post your passwords, even when encrypted, to a
public forum. For safety's sake, you should go ahead and change those
now. The encryption is reversible, and the algorithms are not well
protected.

A word of advice, don't post your passwords, even when encrypted, to a

echo RPC is not initialized.

So I checked directly with command: rpcinfo –p. It is not giving any

It seems that there is some problems with registered RPC Services.

It would be a great help if somebody can share his views regarding this

 Hi,

Wondering if anyone has seen this or has some ideas to resolve:

 ARS 7.0 patch 2

 ITSM7 apps installed

 Win2003 Server

 SQL DB

The problem is: Admin tool has started locking up after about 2 minutes
of
idle time, then click on any object and it hourglasses. Error returns –
failed to load forms from server. While the admin tool is locked the
user
tool functions perfectly fine. This happens for all admin accounts on
multiple machines (which would make sense with one thread)—also happens
when
only one admin is logged in. We have to restart the AR Server service
to
recover. Fortunately, it's a dev environment.

So, here are things we have done to try to figure out the issue: If we
start the service manually from a command line arserver –m the admin
tool
does not lock up. When starting from services – admin tool locks. In
the
armonitor.cfg file we have reduced the processes starting to only
arserver –
still locks up. We have tried patching the admin tool – still
locks. We
also tried reinstalling arserver with the 'Administrator' user account
on
 that box—still locks. We've added debug-mode to ar.cfg and aren't
seeing
anything out of sorts in the logs. We've tried starting the service as
the
 local admin – still locks.

We're concluding that maybe there is a connectivity issue,
although—we're
not certain as to how that could be, since the user tool works fine.

So, I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas as to what they think the
problem
could be, or places to look to troubleshoot/resolve.

 Thanks in advance.

Re: BMC ITSM vs. Tivoli?

2007-05-17 Thread Emad Zaky

Scott,

Yes you are right. A lot of the people involved with Maximo are
ex-Remedy(BMC) especially from sales and marketing.

IBM's product and service portfolio still represents a challenge though,
since they have a global alliance with BMC and historically they have been,
and still are (
http://www-304.ibm.com/jct09002c/gsdod/solutiondetails.do?solution=27542expand=truelc=en),
providing
Remedy products and services for such a long time that I think its taking
time for their sales and marketing to tune their message. It probably a
nightmare explaining why they sell both products and then try to leverage
Maximo over Remedy. And again, they've been doing Remedy for some time and
are comfortable with their knowledge of the product.

So until that's done Maximo has some time to develop into a strong
competitor

that I know at this time. It appears that IBM will be putting quite a
bit of its RD effort into improving the Maximo product. IBM already has a
change management utility incorporated with it's CCMDB product. By the way
some of the people that have told me the benefits of the IBM product line
are ex-Remedy people that went to Maximo after being let go by BMC.

Personally I always thought it was a big mistake for IBM to let go of
their original service product. I'm a big fan of the Remedy product line
and it looks like IBM has made these moves to go head to head with Remedy.
I guess time will tell if it is a good move or not.

BMC support checked the install with me using webex and recommended several
things. The last recommendation was the one which worked, although I did

I did not have access to a CD at the time therefore we created an ISO image

There is a similar issue mentioned in the release notes however the
workaround mentioned doesn't work. They also recommended installing SLM
7.0.3, however I didn't do that

Another defect that was found is that the .html file was empty...it is
resolved in 7.0.3 again...

I asked that they try and never use Install shield on solaris again, and
instead use the good ol' CLI :)

Thanks for everyone who helped

Emad,

Probably time to check the license and make sure the information is in
sync with the main AR Server license. If the host name or some other
information does not match the AR Server license information it is very
likely that the license is not a valid license and is not being validated at
the time the license file is being read.

Hi Joey,

I implemented this previously by using a mathematical formula on the user
name using filters.
Worked perfectly. You could do the same on any field.

Subject: Automatic generation of passwords for imported users..

This is an idea I have but not sure if it would work... I wonder if anyone
has tried something similar..

I wanted to generate random passwords for imported users, and email them
this password after this user was created. I have a customer here who
wants
to move from Magic to Remedy, and I have got the user data from Magic.
While
importing this data to Remedy, I had this thought of generating a GUID,
and
using the last 10 characters of the GUID as the password. I do not really
care if this is not a unique string across the board though chances are it
might be unique since I'm picking the end of the string and not the
beginning which tends to be not unique for consecutive records..

So on getting the last few characters - say 10 characters, I was thinking
of
putting it in a display only field, and pushing this value to the Password
field during the creation of the record, and emailing the user this string
using a filter with a `! as a post fix on its name..

Will this actually work to generate a password? Has anyone tried something
similar before pushing a simple text string into the password field??

ITSM 7 and the Mystery of the Disappearing Reports

2007-05-11 Thread Emad Zaky

Hello All,

I installed AR 7.0.2, Incident, Problem and Change (7 patch2). At every
stage of the installation I took a back up and checked the applications.
Solaris 10, Oracle 10g

I checked the reports after installing incident, Problem and they were ok.
After installing Change all the reports disappeared and the Change reports
are now present. I went to the report form and all the reports are present
including incident and Problem.

So, Dear Listers, Can anyone solve the mystery of the disappearing
reports?!!

Re: Solaris zoned servers (Virtual) : URGENT

2007-05-11 Thread Emad Zaky

Kevin,

I have done this on a whole root zone, and its working fine. You will need a
license on each ar server however.

The problem i am facing is installation speed. Its taking a ridiculously
long time on a powerful machine. I am not sure if this has something to do
with Virtualization or not. I am going to try and test this on a physical
solaris server and compare times.

Thanks,

Emad,

I was told by a Sun Solaris Product Manager that the functionality of
zones was built into Solaris 9 – but for Solaris 9 you only have one zone.
We have AR 7 running on a Solaris 10 server, but not using multiple zones.
We also use Oracle for our db…

This whole concept has me thinking of questions [someone may know the
answer to the following questions]:

If Oracle were in a separate zone, would you need to connect as a remote
db? Or would it be better to keep the Oracle install in the same zone?

Can you have multiple AR servers running in different zones? Would this
create licensing issues?

I would be interested to hear from anyone running AR System using or
planning to use zones.

Kelvin

Re: SSO - Again

John,

No. Nothing in the white paper simply returns the userid/password/auth
string. nothing like that. You can retrieve the windows login, but after
that you can't retrieve the password.
The way it is implemented is that you have to provide the password.

Emad

Hello List,

I have a general question pertaining to the implementation of CMDB. We
are currently running AR Server 6.3, with 6.0 Help Desk and Change, as
well as a couple of custom-built apps. We want to implement CMDB, but
would rather go with the latest and greatest, v2.0. As I understand it, this
would require ARS 7.0, but as we are not ready to upgrade our entire
system, the thought is to install ARS 7 on a second server with CMDB 2.0and
have it map to our existing
6.3 system and apps. Here is where we are getting mixed feedback. All
agree this can be done, however, some say it is not worth the effort as it
would require significant mapping between CMDB 2.0 and our 6.0 apps.

Obviously I am not looking to get a solution on this as there is a lot
more to the picture than I've explained here. But any thoughts or
experiences regarding this subject would be appreciated.

Thanks

SSO - Again

2006-12-13 Thread Emad Zaky

Hi Listers,

I read BMC white paper titiled, Integrating BMC Remedy ARS with SSO
Authentication Systems and Other Client-Side Login Intercept Technologies,
where it talks about how to implement SSO. SSO as I understand it means that
the application will login using the user's windows credentials once the
user clicks on it.

However, after trying out the codes, it seems what BMC are proposing is just
an intercept to the Login i.e. When you login a dll will run to pick up the
username\password and pass it to Remedy. This means that in the intercept we
will be able to capture the username, but no password. The password has to
be somehow be calculated in Remedy as well as in the intercept DLL, which
is sort of hard coding the passwords.

As far as security goes, I understand why the windows password is tightly
guarded, but I am wondering how do other application using windows SSO and
why can't Remedy do that?

Emad

Re: SSO - Again

2006-12-13 Thread Emad Zaky

Well Patrick...I actually wrote and compiled the DLL successfully. And when
I hardcode the username and password, I click on the user tool and it
successfully logs in. I can get the user name using an NT Api call, but the
password is not possible. What support told me is that I have to use a
hardcoded password ( or a password which is calculated from the user name
for example), and find out the password inside the DLL.
I still don't think that 100% SSO is implemented yet.

it is a MultiStep process to hook this up.. Work through support..
Windows AR SERVER and Windows Mid-Tier ONLY..
( I would love to hear otherwise.. but have not yet)

Actually the way it happens is First LDAP is running and you can login
with your userid and password to the LDAP to AD and it checks that..
Then you are to hook up the SSO portion to the server.. and test that
 .. -- which does not use a password -- Thru mid-tier only.
Then you are to hook up the AREA-HUB to the server and make sure that
both LDAP and SSO are working together..
Then you can CREATE a .dll -- Which is not supplied by remedy .. that
just replaces the SSO Code from the mid-tier with the SSO Code in the
UserTool.. and IF this .dll is Present.. then it will log you on
 accordingly..
-- Access can be controlled in many different ways.. Either you have an
USER account or Just one in AD.
IF your AD is setup with a Remedy Group for Write licenses, then you
 configure appropriately.
IF your AD does not have this - Then you could use a Default.. or
 UserForm.. it si a Tri-Configuration.

Hope this helps you some.. but there is no embedded anything .. it just
does it.. Remember this is a onion approach. Each layer has a specific job
to do.. if one layer is not configured properly it will not work.
