Re: REMEDY ADMIN NEEDED in Colorado Springs, CO - SECRET CLEARANCE - 6 Month Contract to Hire - $80-100K (Based on experience) - Contract Rate $38-48/hr

2013-09-13 Thread Jim Manara
Lest we forget, Remedy began as a way to develop applications without
having to pay for expensive DBA talent. The cycle appears to be nearing
its completion as managed solutions like ServiceNow leverage the delivery
of applications without having to pay for expensive Remedy talent.

We have become our parents.

There is still work out there and the rates are declining. Still an all
inclusive of $50 per hour for a non local is an opportunity I would not
pursue. Everyone has to make their own decision.

For those who have read this far, I am looking for a new contract.

Regards

Maybe it's because (random numbers on the way) BMC wants half a million
dollars to setup an install with a 20% annual support contract, and
'qualified developers' want $200/hr to develop in it.

Those numbers are quasi made up...but not entirely. Don't get me
wrong...I
love Remedy, I have made my career with it for the last 15 years...it is
hands down, the best tool on the market at the moment to do what it
doesbut there is competition out there...some of them are doing it
faster/cheaper and nipping at BMC's heels.

I don't want anyone to take a job that is beneath themif you don't
like
the opportunity, or are some way shape or form 'insulted' by the amount of
money that is being offered...one of a few things will happen

1 - They will find someone at the rate they are looking for
2 - They will increase the rate till they find someone
3 - they will switch off the platform to something else that they can
afford to use
4 - insert your hypothetical outcome here

Having been in the position of hiring people in the past, we were told by
our recruiters that we just couldn't find 'qualified' people for less than
$120/hr...but guess what...we did, for the entire time I was on the
project.

Re: ServiceNow as SRM replacement?

2013-01-11 Thread Jim Manara
The reason multiple products succeed in the market place (Windows, MAC) or
(Android, iOS) is because they address a need for some number of users.
Look at the history of Project Management or Report Writing software.

Having spent a number of years in the Software Industry, the worst thing
to base a decision on is the offered price of new software. The companies
stock value is based on new sales and growth of customer base. The
dollars received for these elements are secondary to the volume. Hence
your favorite salesperson is ready focus on price and how they will beat
any competitive offer.

The true measure is the value your organization will receive from the
software. There is a place for both Remedy and SNOW. The key is knowing
where your organization realizes the most value.

** Hi:   A user believes there is a bug related to daylight time saving in software. I can reproduce it. Steps:   1). If I have locale->TimeZone sets to blank, and creates an incident, its "Create Date" is 2012-03-19 01:55:06 PM.    2). However, when I change the TimeZone to GMT-5:00 (EST) America/New_York, "Create Date" of the same incident becomes 2012-03-19 12:55:06 PM. There is one hour defference.   My time zone is GMT-5:00 (EST) US & Canada. These two time zones are GMT-5:00. Do you know why these two GMT-5:00 setting shows one hour defference for the same incident.   This happens to incidents created between new day light saving time (second week of March) and old day light saving time (first week of April).    Thanks      Jianqi Cen      _attend WWRUG12 www.wwrug.com ARSlist: "Where the Answers Are"_

Misi, Thank you for the comprehensive response.  I am clear on how licensing works and your explanation has clarified my understanding.  However, I may have hidden my real question in the weeds of my post...How are tokens tracked when the Type = Fixed and the Application = Float or Type = Float and Application = Fixed? What happens if all Float tokens are assigned but the person has a Fixed Application license?Jim Manara480-273-0934

Hi,

If we are talking about the Fixed (named) licenses, the counting is not an
issue, right. It is just a matter of searching the License Type and
Application License fields in the User form.

The Floating (concurrent) licenses are more interesting, as they are
counted on the fly when they are "needed". The counting is not really that
hard, the problem is to understand when this "need" arise.

For the AR User license, it is quite easy. The system grabs the license
tooken, and allocates the license, as soon as you access data in the
system, such as searching, refreshing a table, or using a set-fields to
retrieve server data.

If AR User Floating license tokens were available, everything is ok. If
one was not available, the user gets a Floating Read instead. The error
message from having the Floating Read will not be given until the user
actually modifies data, which can confuse people.

As for the Application License, they work in the exact same way. The only
difference is that each application has a set of forms tied to it. Each
application form that requires a license is tagged with that application.

This explains why you see different last-access-times if you review a user
that has multiple application licenses.

So I buy Fixed and Floating Licenses, sorry Named and Concurrent.I can obtain AR User and Separate Application Licenses.  I can get these application licenses bundled or by the application.  In today's world I do not have to purchase both User and Application licenses for any individual because the application license contains the User license. In an environment with COTS Applications and Custom Forms, I need AR User licenses for people who only work with the custom forms.  I need Application licenses for those who work with the COTS Applications and who may or may not work with the custom forms. Now the User Form asks for License Type, Read, Fixed, Floating, Restricted Read.  (OK named or concurrent)Then it asks for the Application License in a text field.  Sorry for the simplified example:So person 1 is assigned a License Type Fixed and BMC Incident Mgmt FixedSo person 2 is assigned a License Type Floating and BMC Incident Mgmt FloatingSo person 3 is assigned a License Type Fixed and BMC Change Mgmt FloatingSo person 4 is assigned a License Type Floating and BMC Problem Mgmt FixedHow does the application identify how many licenses are remaining?  Both of the Fixed and Floating variety as well as for each application.Jim Manara480-273-0934

Also consider:  Does completing the ticket trigger a Customer Satisfaction survey?  You might be surprised by the reaction of the populace to what was considered a "dead issue."  Tread lightly and inform the Incident Manager.Jim Manara480-273-0934

** I personally would not make such a decision on what to do to those tickets.  Instead, the process owner of Incident Management should be made aware of the fact, provided a report, and they should decide what happens from there.  We had a similar problem at my employer several years ago until we started publishing reports and I built some rules into SLM to help guide people to close things in a timely manner.   Thanks,   Shawn Pierson Remedy Developer | Southern Union    From: Action Request System discussion list(ARSList) [mailto:arslist@ARSLIST.ORG] On Behalf Of Brittain, Mark Sent: Wednesday, November 30, 2011 10:43 AM To: arslist@ARSLIST.ORG Subject: Standard for Old tickets    ** Hi All,   This is probably a common problem. I have some open tickets that are 3-4 years old and the assigned person has never gone back to close. My thinking is if the ticket is open for more than a year, it’s a dead issue. As such I would like to go in an close these to get them out of the queue. However these same assigned persons will likely scream some injustice if I do so.   Is anyone aware of a best practice or ITIL standard that I can use to justify closing these tickets?   Thanks Mark   Mark Brittain Remedy Developer NaviSite – A Time Warner Cable Company mbritt...@navisite.com Office: 315-453-2912 x5335 Mobile: 315-317-2897    This e-mail is the property of NaviSite, Inc. I had a brief conversation with Doug on this topic at
BMCW  The retrofit is under development and I am anxiously awaiting
it.

Whilst
I do not remember it being officially announced at BUW, I am told that it
was.

In fact, I had a fairly long conversation with the Development Manager
for the CMDB as well as the Product Manager for CMDB and both of them agreed
that they already were working on a patch for ITSM 6 suite of applications
(the release date for the patch is still not finalized as of
yet) that would work with CMDB 2.0.1 on AR 7.0.1 which as per some
conversation should be releasing soon Oct/Nov timeframe. This was based on the
feedback they recieved from various customers that they would not consider
moving to ITSM 7.0, but wanted Federation, CI Viewer, better Reconciliation
that is available in CMDB 2.x.

I don't believe that this is an officially announced. However, this has
been confirmed and I have been having further conversations with the
development manager since BUW about related things, so that we can plan for it
  from a logistics perspective.

  Cheers,

was a fairly hot topic at BUW, it seems a lot of people would liketo use
the CI Viewer from CMDB 2.0 without having to upgrade to ITSM
7.However, nothing was promised at all by BMC, there was no
"official"announcement that I'm aware of. It was merely a discussion
topic. It maybe something that BMC are now working on based on the BUW
feedback, butthat's about all I took away from it.As far as the
effort goes, it will obviously vary but CMDB 1.1 - CMDB2.0 will be a lot
  simpler than ITSM 6 - ITSM 7.  Matt-Original

I know that works.  So let's proceed tothe real unknown:  The
CMDB 2.0/ITSM 6 relationship. The word I heard was that there was no
*official* integration betweenthe two, though they may offer a way to do
that sometime.  But considerthe architecture - what's different about
CMDB 1.x and 2.0?  The CDM.It seems to me that if you're willing to
modify (if necessary) yourmapping from your ITSM 6 apps to the CMDB 2.0
CDM, and update yourinterfaces to the CMDB, specifically from the Asset
console, I can'tthink of a reason it could not work.  Is it
potentially labor intensive?Yes.  Is it impossible?  I think
not.  Is it worth the effort?  That'sup to you.The only
potential glitches I see are potential ones with someexecutables, but I
think that could be dealt with.  The problem is thatI don't know
  anyone who's actually done it.Rick-Original
