Subject: Remedy vs. HelpStar

Our company is looking to see if there is another help desk product
besides Remedy to use for ticketing. The primary reason for looking at
another product is cost savings, as we will need to add a number of
users/licenses to our existing Remedy system.

Next week I begin my evaluation of HelpStar. I know the strength and
extendibility of Remedy, and do not think a small product like HelpStar
can compete. However, I still need to compare it objectively.

Has anyone used and developed in HelpStar? Has anyone previously
performed a side-by-side comparison with Remedy, and would be willing to
compare notes?

Any information would be helpful.

Thanks.

Form/Report showing total number of assigned, wip, resolved etc.

2007-05-31 Thread Mosco, John D.
All,

I am looking to create a form in remedy or a page within a form
that will display a report dynamically that we currently produce manually
using excel ( I know I wanted to throw stones too). Basically, I just need
to know how to make a field in remedy that will do COUNT(Assigned = Tech
Bench AND Tech = Joe.User). I know how to do this in crystal but crystal does
not format like that real well. I think the best way to go is to just import
an xls into remedy, use it as a background and create display fields over
the fields they normally manually input.

I realize this is simple but I cant seem to find the proper
syntax to do it.

Thanks,

Re: COLSUM - How do I make a field show the sum of all tickets with a certain category or distict attribute ?

2007-05-25 Thread Mosco, John D.

ALL,

I am sure this is an easy one. I have a table that list all the tickets
that meet a certain distinct attribute in this case a field called
'ServiceYesNo' Values In Service or Out of Service. The table displays
fine but I don't want a list, all I want is a count. I am pretty sure I
should use the COLSUM Function. I created an active link with a set fields,
choosing the column and choosing COLSUM as the value.

Oh great remedy gurus help this mere mortal that I may thwart the request
for constant reporting data from my highers by giving them real time
data..(Today IS Friday)

THANKS !!

Flashboard Problem - Got to the bottom of it

2007-05-25 Thread Mosco, John D.
All,

Thank you to everyone that responded to help me (Axton, Fred, and
others) with the Flashboard Problem where fields will not display over the
flash board. Believe it or not it turned out to be a defect in the remedy
software; I have a ticket in for them to develop a patch for the problem.

AXTON,
Thank you for taking the time to respond to my issue. However, a
simple difference between remedy admin and user does not solve my problem. If
I cant put labels on flashboards then why use them at all. If anyone has any
idea how to fix this I would appreciate the assistance, all I have gotten so
far is the usual remedy level 2 troubleshooting which while helpful is stuff
I already kinda (with humility I speaketh) know. If we have this many

large BMC Purchase that we are looking into. I cant get simple answers to
simple problems, I never had these problems with Altiris !! Ok, I am ranting

Might just be a limitation or difference in the way view fields are
rendered in the client versus admin tool. I've seen the same thing
before.

In the flashboard object, do you have an advanced properties tab? If
so, you can set some finer grained properties on the display
properties, major/minor tick marks and lines, x/y axis label font
size, color of the lines within the chart, etc.

Since it seems that in the User tool the FlashBoards field is always
being placed on top of your fields have you tried something like putting
the Flashboards field in a tab and having your fields outside of the tab
on the main page?

Sure, I wish I could help more with this one. What it sounds like is
that there is a difference in how the view/trim fields are rendered
between the admin and user tool.

The best advice I can give in a case like this is to seek an alternate
approach to accomplish the task at hand.

What kind of labels are you looking to put on the fb?
vertical/horizontal axis labels, legend labels, chart title, etc.? Fb
should be able to accomodate these things natively without requiring the
use of trim fields.

If you group based on 2 values in your fb variable, individual chart
titles are introduced, but your range of available chart types is
narrowed down as well.

Re: Windows Vista Question

2007-03-14 Thread Mosco, John D.
Tim,
You can not install SQL Server 2005 on a client OS, you can install
the express version which has allot of the functionality but like mysql has
allot of limitations and very limited administrative functionality (mostly
its frustrating).

Regarding Vista,
We are staying away from it until at least SP1 (so I hear), I can
not find any reason to move to it the only real benefit I see with it is it
is prettier which is no reason to migrate. Like NT before SP4, 2K before SP3,
and XP before SP1 (or arguable SP2) it is basically not worth it but hey if
you like graphics

Timothy,

There is an issue with installing SQL Server 2005 and Vista. SP2 for SQL is
supposed to correct this but it didn't work on my computer. There is also an
issue with Visual Studio 2005 and Vista. A VS patch was recently released
but it didn't work. My computer and video card are new and fully compatible
with Vista, so it's not a hardware issue.

I have been running Office 2007 and Vista Ultimate 64-bit since Vista RTM and
Office RTM were released last November. Because of the lack of stability and
the incompatibilities I have decided to get rid of it. This week I went back
to Windows XP. In my opinion and based on my experience Vista is not ready
yet. I will probably wait until SP1 is released before looking at Vista
again.

On a related note, since you have multiple instances of ARS running on your
notebook, the free Virtual PC 2007 is good and will run on Vista.

OK.here is a question. I am a consultant who carries around multiple
ARSERVER instances on my Laptop. I have a 5x, and 7x server loaded on a
Windows XP laptop. I already am aware of the client limitations; but are
there limitations to AR System Server living on a Vista machine with say SQL
Server??

Re: Problems connecting to Oracle following 10g client install...

2007-02-07 Thread Mosco, John D.
Brian,
Upgrading Oracle in General is not a good idea, you would probably do
better to do an export of your data, install Oracle 10G (if remedy supports
it) and pull your data back in. I am not sure of the differences between 5
and 7 with 9.2 but the differences between 9 and 10 are numerous.

Rick,

I tried upgrading an oracle 9.2 database from version 5.1.2 to 7.0.1 on my
laptop. I installed the Oracle 10g client and used this as instructed. I
could never get the service to start. It would always time out. I watched
what Remedy was up to through Enterprise Manager and could see it talking to
the database, presumably trying to build its cache. It would keep starting
more and more connections. It was driving me crazy until I was advised by a
colleague that you cannot upgrade from 5.1.2 to 7.0.1. You have to go
through version 7.0.0 first.

I don't know what the problem is though. I have now done an install of 7.0.0
over my 7.0.1 and it starts ok. I have yet to upgrade this to 7.0.1 though
through lack of free time. I also want to restore the database back to 5.1.2
and try the upgrade to 7.0.0 and then 7.0.1 to see what the result is. But
have yet to find the time!

Thanks for the quick reply. I pasted a copy of tnsnames.ora in the
new 10g \Network\Admin folder, but am still getting the same error.
tnsping shows the correct use of sqlnet.ora and tnsnames.ora, so that
looks good.

Not sure what to try next.

 Hello all,

 Windows 2000 AS
 Ora 9i
 ARS 5.1.2 upgraded to 7.0.1

I installed the 10g client, but am unable to start arserver following
the 7.0.1 upgrade. Found no errors in the install log, but found the
 following in the arerror.log

 Mon Feb 05 11:13:38 2007 ORA-06401: NETCMN: invalid driver
 designator

 Mon Feb 05 11:13:38 2007 390600 : Cannot initialize contact with SQL
 database (ARERR 551)

 Mon Feb 05 11:13:38 2007 Stop server

 Mon Feb 05 11:13:38 2007 390600 : AR System server terminated -- fatal
 error encountered (ARNOTE 21)

I can connect via SQL Plus as ARAdmin.

I have my old 9i client installed, and tnsnames.ora is in the 9i path.
Was the 10g client installation supposed to create a new or modify the
 old tnsnames.ora file?

 Tia,

 Rick

Re: Malloc Error

2007-01-18 Thread Mosco, John D.
Alex,
We had the same error on our server, it turned out to be an error
with the print spoller service hanging, try disabling the print spooler
service and see what that does. My contact info is below if you have further
questions.

Subject: Malloc Error

One of our servers have developed a Malloc Error (ARERR 300) whenever we try
to do some maintenance work on the server. This includes taking a
definitions file download of all workflow. Normally, we usually don't have
any issues but the error has been hitting us since yesterday. No other
details are given with this message

We are using a Windows 2003 Server with MSSQL 2005 with 4 GB of RAM. Our
database is set up so that the max memory it takes up is 1 GB.

Does anyone have any ideas why this error is happening?

Thanks.

Remedy: Disaster Recovery - Data Exports

2006-11-04 Thread Mosco, John D.
**

All,

I am trying to find the best way to make sure
that I have a good disaster revovery plan. I already set up SQL Backups full
and diff etc. From my class two weeks ago (admin 2) it seems the best way to
be able to bring your data back though is to do a data export and then import.
Is there anyway to automate this on a schedule or do I need to have my junior
admins just do this every day ?

Thanks,
