Friday Humor - Understanding Engineers

2011-04-22 Thread Robert Dalton
Is It possible to understand Engineers? Where there's a will, there's a way

Understanding Engineers #1
Two engineering students were biking across a university campus when one said,
"Where did you get such a great bike?" The second engineer replied, "Well, I
was walking along yesterday, minding my own business, when a beautiful woman
rode up on this bike, threw it to the ground, took off all her clothes and
said, "Take what you want."

The first engineer nodded approvingly and said, "Good choice, The clothes
probably wouldn't have fit you anyway."

Understanding Engineers #2
To the optimist, the glass is half-full. To the pessimist, the glass is
half-empty. To the engineer, the glass is twice as big as it needs to be.

Understanding Engineers #3
A priest, an ophthalmologist, and an engineer were golfing one morning behind a
particularly slow group of golfers. The engineer fumed, "What's with those
guys? We must have been waiting for fifteen minutes!" The doctor chimed in, "I
don't know, but I've never seen such inept golf!" The priest said, "Here comes
the greens keeper. Let's have a word with him."

He said, "Hello, George. What's wrong with that group ahead of us?
They're rather slow, aren't they?" The greens keeper replied, "Oh, yes. That's
a group of blind firemen.
They lost their sight saving our clubhouse from a fire last year, so we let
them play for free anytime."

The group fell silent for a moment. Then the priest said, "That's so sad. I
think I'll say a special prayer for them." The ophthalmologist added, "Good
idea. And maybe I could examine them to see if there's anything I can do for
them." They were silent for a moment. Then the engineer said, "Why can't they
play at night?"

Understanding Engineers #4
What is the difference between mechanical engineers and civil engineers?
Mechanical engineers build weapons.
Civil engineers build targets.

Understanding Engineers #5
The graduate with a science degree asks, "Why does it work?"
The graduate with an engineering degree asks, "How does it work?"
The graduate with accounting degree asks, "How much will it cost?"
The graduate with an arts degree asks, "Do you want fries with that?"

Understanding Engineers #6
Normal people believe that if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Engineers believe that if it ain't broke, it doesn't have enough features yet.

Understanding Engineers #7
An engineer was crossing a road one day, when a frog called out to him and
said, "If you kiss me, I'll turn into a beautiful princess." He bent over,
picked up the frog, and put it in his pocket. The frog spoke up again and said,
"If you kiss me, I'll turn back into a beautiful princess and stay with you for
one week." The engineer took the frog out of his pocket, smiled at it and
returned it to the pocket.

The frog then cried out, "If you kiss me and turn me back into a princess, I'll
stay with you for one week and do anything you want." Again, the engineer took
the frog out, smiled at it and put it back into his pocket.

Finally, the frog asked, "What is the matter? I've told you I'm a beautiful
princess and that I'll stay with you for one week and do anything you want. Why
won't you kiss me?"

The engineer said, "Look, I'm a busy engineer.
I don't have time for a girlfriend. But a talking frog, now that's cool!"

Friday Humor - Golf Injury

2010-05-07 Thread Robert Dalton
Golf Injury…

Two women were playing golf. One teed off and watched in horror as her ball
headed directly toward a foursome of men playing the next hole.

The ball hit one of the men. He immediately clasped his hands together at his
groin, fell to the ground and proceeded to roll around in agony.

The woman rushed down to the man, and immediately began to apologize.

'Please allow me to help. I'm a Physical Therapist and I know I could relieve
your pain if you'd allow me, she told him.

'Oh, no, I'll be all right. I'll be fine in a few minutes,' the man replied.

He was in obvious agony, lying in the fetal position, still clasping his hands
there at his groin. At her persistence, however, he finally allowed her to help.

She gently took his hands away and laid them to the side, loosened his pants
and put her hands inside. She administered tender and artful massage for
several long moments and asked, 'How does that feel'?

'Feels great,' he replied, 'but I still think my thumb's broken!

RESOLVED: Attachments in Work Info Entries Opening the Wrong File

2009-11-03 Thread Robert Dalton
Many thanks to Charles Baldi for pointing me down the right road - Thanks
Charles!!!

Problem: While working in the ITSM Incident Management console and working
tickets from a second level support position. Each time they open an
attachment in a work info entry the attachment opens the same file no matter
which ticket they are working on.

Problem is caused by tier-1 agents creating tickets from inbound email
messages, they are trained to save the email and add as an attachment to the
ticket -BUT- they were all using the same generic file name of "email.pdf".

When someone opens an attachment in Remedy it is saved to the person's hard
drive in the temp folder under their Windows profile. If another attachment is
opened with the same name Windows will place a number at the end of the file
name such as email1.pfd; email2.pdf; etc. When Windows reaches 99 it doesn't
know what to do.

Fix - Have the individual tech delete all files under the C:\Documents and
Settings\\Local Settings\Temp folder.

Recommend a change in policy or training for tier-1 techs to use ticket number
or something in the attachment file names to prevent problem from happening in
the future.

Attachments in Work Info Entries Opening the Wrong File

2009-10-29 Thread Robert Dalton
Env: UNIX / Oracle / ARS 7.01 / ITSM 7.03

This just started happening in the last week or so for only two support
technicians using our Remedy System. Everyone else is running just fine and I
am unable to duplicate the issue.

The two who are having the problem are using ITSM Incident Management
application and working tickets from a second level support position. Each
time they open an attachment in a work info entry the attachment opens the same
file no matter which ticket they are working on. It appears to be an email
message from an earlier ticket and now no matter which attachment they try to
open it opens the same file every time.

I worked with one of the technicians and renamed his "AR System" folder under
c:\documents and settings\all users\application data (thinking perhaps it was a
corrupted view or search file) and the problem appeared to go away for a day
but now it's back.

Has anyone seen this before??? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Robert Dalton

Copy to New - Disable or Use - Which do you Prefer?

2009-09-03 Thread Robert Dalton
Good Morning List,

A have a question which is not specific to any platform or version.

Just curious how others handle the "Copy to New" functionality that's been in
the client User Tool for many years.

Do you prefer to create an active link which fires an error message to prevent
people from using the copy to new functionality or do you let people use it???

In previous projects I worked on we always ran the error message preventing
people from using it and then we created our own button, menu item, etc which
performs an open window action and pushes only the fields we selected over
instead.

Is this how you are dealing with this -OR- do you have any better ideas???

Thanks,

Robert Dalton

Create new or modify existing - which is better?

2009-04-24 Thread Robert Dalton
Env: UNIX Solaris / Oracle / ARS 7.01 / ITSM 7.03

Hello,

I received a request from our reporting person to create a join form between
the main HPD Help Desk table and the Help Desk Assignment Log table for
reporting purposes. I discovered that a join between those tables already
exists (HPD:HelpDeskAssignmentLogJoin) but our reporting person needs a couple
of fields added to meet her reporting requirement.

So my question is: Should I create a whole new join - especially considering
future upgrades of ITSM - OR should I just add a couple of new fields to the
existing join and document my changes???

Also - If this was a filter I would just disable the existing filter - perform
a "Save as" and create a new filter with a new name - but this is a join form
and I thought perhaps it would not be as "cut-and-dry" as that.

Please let me know what you think - your input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Robert Dalton

Last_Assigned_Date Field is not being populated

2008-11-07 Thread Robert Dalton
Env: Unix / Oracle / ARS 7.01 / ITSM 7.03 patch 7

Had a reporting person discover that this field "Last_Assigned_Date" is not
being populated - and it looks like it never has

Two interesting things - 1) This a character field and not a date/time field
like all the other "date" fields and 2) I cannot find any workflow which is
tied to this field

Does anyone know what this field is used for??? Is this field being populated
in your system??? (it is a hidden field on the Date/System tab in Incident
Mgmt)

Thanks,

Robert Dalton

OT: Friday Humor

2008-10-24 Thread Robert Dalton
A cabbie picks up a Nun.

She gets into the cab, and notices that the VERY handsome cab driver won't stop
staring at her.

She asks him why he is staring.

He replies: 'I have a question to ask you but I don't want to offend you.'

She answers, 'My son, you cannot offend me. When you're as old as I am and have
been a nun as long as I have, you get a chance to see and hear just about
everything. I'm sure that there's nothing you could say or ask that I would
find offensive.'

'Well, I've always had a fantasy to have a nun kiss me.'

She responds, 'Well, let's see what we can do a about that: #1, you have to be
single and #2, you must be Catholic.'

The cab driver is very excited and says, 'Yes, I'm single and Catholic!'

'OK' the nun says. 'Pull into the next alley.'

The nun fulfills his fantasy, with a kiss that would make a hooker blush.

But when they get back on the road, the cab driver starts crying.

'My dear child,' says the nun, 'why are you crying?'

'Forgive me but I've sinned. I lied and I must confess, I'm married and I'm
Jewish.'

The nun says, 'That's OK.. My name is Kevin and I'm going to a Halloween
party.'

Hope you have a Happy Halloween!!

RESOLVED: Receiving ARERR 1904 when Attempting to Run Reports

2008-10-15 Thread Robert Dalton
Here is what I did:

1. Rename the folder
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Business Objects\3.0
 To
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Business Objects\3.0_OLD

2. Reinstall the Remedy user client. This forces the install to reinstall the
crystal link.

3. Checked under Control Panel -> Admin Tools -> ODBC Sources -- If there are
two Remedy ODBC Drivers listed I removed the older one and left the one which
was just installed as part of the client re-install.

i verified the user is now able to run reports just fine.

Thanks!

Receiving ARERR 1904 when Attempting to Run Reports

2008-10-15 Thread Robert Dalton
Environment is Unix / Oracle / ARS 7.01 / ITSM 7.03

A user attempts to run a report via the client software and receives this
error: An error occurred while generating the Crystal report: 0x80004003 -
Invalid pointer (ARERR 1904).

The error messages document only states that it is a Crytal error and to
consult the Crystal documentation.

Other people can run reports just fine. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the
Remedy ODBC driver, and the Remedy client software is this did not resolve the
problem. I've looked at the person's profile and everything seems fine. I
also had the user type in the server name and port number on the
Tools->Options->Advanced Tab under reporting server and this did not resolve
the problem either.

Has anyone else seen this error before.

Thanks,

Robert Dalton

Error when runing reports via the web [ARERR 9260]

2008-10-09 Thread Robert Dalton
Env = Unix Solaris / Oracle / ARS 7.01 / ITSM 7.03

Customer attemps to run canned report via web interface and receives the
following error: Error during processing : ARERR [9260] Report location is
missing from report settings configuration page. Please see your
administrator.

When I look up the error in the Remedy error messages document it states this:

This error occurs if the location of the Crystal Reports Server XI
engine is not specified in the BMC Remedy Mid Tier Configuration Tool.

My question is: Can reporting in ITSM 7 only be performed via the client
software -OR- is there a way to run reports via a web interface and the
mid-tier??? If so, how??? Does the Crystal Reader need to be installed on
individual customer's PC's or does Crystal Enterprise need to be installed and
configured on the mid-tier web server???

Thanks,

Robert Dalton
