That is really the biggest problem that discovery uncovers: how incomplete the
necessary data is. Most of the project time is cleaning that up so that the
results mean something.

We were using BMC's configuration discovery tool (formerly Marimba) and fou=
nd that we could not reliably discover machine serial numbers, and it seeme=
d to often depend on the type of hardware being discovered. In particular,=
IIRC, I don't think we were able to reliably get SNs for most Sun servers.=
We were able to get it for many Linux (x86) servers, but not all. In man=
y cases, what was returned was the value of what the "hostid" command retur=
ned, just in decimal rather than hex. I don't believe it had anything to d=
o with rights; it just appeared that the information either was not availab=
le for discovery, or it wasn't running the right command to get it.

OK. So after you are logged into the Discovery application, how are you setting
up the discovery task for UNIX/LINUX?
Under Discovery method, are you using telnet or SSH? Are you providing
credentials at some point?

It sounds like you are doing both a SNMP discovery and something else. The SNMP
discovery would give you the hostname by doing a lookup on the IP.

Re: BMC Discovery

2009-10-06 Thread Chowdhury, Tauf
OK. So after you are logged into the Discovery application, how are you
setting up the discovery task for UNIX/LINUX?

Under Discovery method, are you using telnet or SSH? Are you providing
credentials at some point?

It sounds like you are doing both a SNMP discovery and something else.
The SNMP discovery would give you the hostname by doing a lookup on the
IP.

I access discovery via Remote Desktop and we access Discovery via SSH.
I just log into a gui.bat, give my credentials.

Correction - we discover the Linux/Unix server but Discovery does not
display the Chassis serial # and the Bios Serial #, the model,
manufacturer. The serial # we receive is scrambled.

We receive the Name, Class Name, Host Name, via the Discovery tool.

Re: question about ITSM Product Catalog based on BMC discovery solution

2008-05-12 Thread Peter Romain
Hi Fernando,

I don't fully understand your issue but am interested in it as we are
using BMC Topology Discovery and also wanted to have our own Tier 1-3
values.

Did you enable best practice categorisation? We didn't so I have no
experience of this in operation.

We also don't use Change Management so I don't understand what happened to
your categorisation when you installed it. Maybe if you can explain this a
different way I might be able to overcome the Monday morning blues and
understand your issue!

We are using the Product Catalog Alias to convert discovery Tiers. It
converts, for example, for Computer System, Harware/Machine/BMC Discovered
to Hardware/Server/Physical.

Cheers

Peter

question about ITSM Product Catalog based on BMC discovery solution

2008-05-11 Thread Fernando McKay
Hello...

We just installed ITSM 7.0.3 (change management module). We already have BMC
fundation and topology discovery populating the CMDB (2.1) with configuration
items. BMC discovery categorizes all configuration items discovered and insert
that categorization in the attributes Category, Type, Item of the CMDB forms.

Now that we installed change management, I realized that the ITSM foundation
product catalog is importing that data for the Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3
categorization. Is there an option in ITSM to avoid this import? I prefer to
have our own product categorization instead the one BMC Discovery uses.

Regards,

2007-06-12 Thread Rick Cook
If you're considering a BMC discovery product, I would strongly encourage
you to consider using one of the agent-based ones. The cheaper agentless
one (Foundation Discovery) is having some issues where we're trying to
deploy it. It's not a bad product, but its functionality and flexibility to
deal with some data issues are limited.

It depends. If you're using the CMDB, then it might be worth looking into.
If you're not using the CMDB, I wouldn't even consider the BMC Discovery

Additionally, I would look into other vendors that your company may already
use and see if they have an interface. If you're running SMS, Landesk, etc.
you can probably save money by buying software to connect them rather than a
new tool for discovery.

Title: BMC Discovery Suite

For a competitor, try FrontRange ITSM if you want.
The problem may be that it shows very well, and has a couple of very nice
features that Remedy doesn't have, but the engineering and support underneath it
is not nearly as good as ARS.  Also, don't even try to get expert help from
their techies - there's like two of them, and they're stretched very thin.
Price is similar to Remedy.

So I'd use them as a comparison if your management
understands that how things work is more important than how they
look.

of Remedy for AR System and ITSM that are out there.  I need to be able to
show my management that the Remedy suite of products are the best (and they are,
in my experience), but the only real competitor in the same space that I am
aware of is CA, which is nowhere near as good as ITSM.

BMC Discovery Suite

Title: BMC Discovery Suite
**

Hello folks,

My company is looking into using the BMC Discovery Suite (Foundation, Topology, Configuration) to populate our CMDB and leverage that for our ITSM applications.  I'm wondering if any of you have experience with it and what your general opinion is.

Additionally, do any of you know of any competitors of Remedy for AR System and ITSM that are out there.  I need to be able to show my management that the Remedy suite of products are the best (and they are, in my experience), but the only real competitor in the same space that I am aware of is CA, which is nowhere near as good as ITSM.

Thanks,

Shawn Pierson
