Re: Log File Editor....

2011-11-08 Thread Theo Fondse
Notepad++ also has a neat FTP plugin that allows you to access files on a unix
box with an 'explorer type tree view' of the folders on the ftp site.
Only downside is that you have to double-click on the file in the
ftp-snap-in-window each time you want to see if the file has changed in the
meanwhile...

Oh, yes - the ability to register a site's ftp login and edit files directly
without the extra down/up load steps is also a pleasure, particularly for doing
quick website work.

Trying out Notepad++, thanks Theo.

Note that rather than changing your APPDATA setting, you can instead go to
View - User Defined Dialogue... Use 'Create New' to create a Remedy entry,
then import your .xml file. Setting the Language to your Remedy entry then
provides the highlighting you created.

Yes, this is also possible. Thanks for the reminder!
I had problems with this method on the first version of Notepad++ I used and
therefore reverted to the APPDATA setting method, but I suppose that those
issues have long been resolved with all the versions that have been released
since then :-)

You can also force it to reload an open file with two mouse clicks.

Old log entries can also be removed without having to switch off the logging in
Remedy. (This way you keep the log file small manageable whilst debugging a
process.)

To configure Notepad++ to use this:

1. Add the userDefineLang.xml file to the Notepad++ install dir

2. Disable the use APPDATA setting

3. Restart Notepad++

Re: Log File Editor....

2011-11-07 Thread Logan, Kelly
I agree with Brian as well - UltraEdit was my editor of choice for the better
part of a decade (if my current employer agreed, I'd still be using it ;^). In
addition to the macros, and it's language highlighting (I programmed a Remedy
version as well), I have found the column mode incredibly useful (when active,
you can cut and paste using columns, instead of the usual word editor use of
rows, so if you want to, say, add five characters in the middle of every line,
it's a snap).

Re: Log File Editor....

2011-11-07 Thread Brian Goralczyk
I would be glad to provide it, but I haven't actually created a language
file. I haven't had a problem with the coloring that is natural, but maybe
I will do that soon. Might make it a little easier.

If anybody would like to throw in some input, I wouldn't complain.

Kelly,

I don't let me company control if I use UltraEdit. I buy it myself every
once in awhile. I am too oriented to it to just give it up.

Note that rather than changing your APPDATA setting, you can instead go to
View - User Defined Dialogue... Use 'Create New' to create a Remedy entry,
then import your .xml file. Setting the Language to your Remedy entry then
provides the highlighting you created.

UltraEdit can, I believe. I know it can use (s)ftp to transfer files and I
know it can monitor the files that it has open to see if they change. I
honestly have to say I don't recall trying to monitor a unix file through
ftp but I am fairly confident that it can.

Note that rather than changing your APPDATA setting, you can instead go to
“View - User Defined Dialogue…” Use ‘Create New’ to create a Remedy entry,
then import your .xml file. Setting the Language to your Remedy entry then
 provides the highlighting you created.

I use either baretail or Notepad++ (http://notepad-plus-plus.org/) for
most log files and have created a Notepad++ user defined language
descriptor for some Remedy related files a couple of years ago.

This colour-codes the files for easy reading.

 The following files are included:

 Remedy .Def

 Remedy .Cfg

 Remedy .Log

 Remedy .Arr

 Remedy .Arq

 Remedy .Arm

 ** **

Notepad++ can also auto-detect file changes and prompts you to reload the
file once you bring it into focus.

You can also force it to reload an open file with two mouse clicks.

Old log entries can also be removed without having to switch off the
logging in Remedy. (This way you keep the log file small manageable
 whilst debugging a process.)

 ** **

To configure Notepad++ to use this:

 1. Add the userDefineLang.xml file to the Notepad++ install dir

 2. Disable the use APPDATA setting

 3. Restart Notepad++

Re: Log File Editor....

2011-11-04 Thread strauss
Yes - just ran 7.6.04.01 just to see what it does on a filter log - I don't see
where it adds any value over notepad or any other editor except the real time
logging (if it works - I connected to my aruser.log and when that log changed
the arlogdisplay.exe promptly crashed, complete with one of the old Dr. Watson
application errors) - there certainly aren't any tools specific to ARS logs.

I use EditPlus since it does not lock the file and I can reload it in real time
to watch the changes, but it doesn't know anything about the files to use for
color coding the display, or anything like that (like it does for xml, html,
perl, tomcat cfg, etc.). It also doesn't crash until the log file gets too
large for any text editor to reasonably handle, and sometimes not even then.

Hi,

We have a lot of happy people using RRR|Log, which will parse and make big
log files containing ESCL/API/FLTR/SQL data useful.

The free version only allows 50 API-calls or 500 SQL-calls, which is kind
of limiting, but it will give you an idea of what it can do.

The full version supports log files of at least 2GB.

Re: Log size and server performance (Log file editor)

2010-04-23 Thread Walters, Mark
As many others have said I use the common Unix utilities (grep/more/less /cut
etc) to manipulate logs. There are many versions available for Windows
systems, I use cygwin to give me a Unix style environment on my desktop system.

I also use Textpad and - my absolute favourite - ZtreeWin
(http://www.ztree.com). This would be my choice if I were only allowed one
application. It's primarily a file manager but it has file viewer/search
features and it will easily handle 2GB files on a sufficiently powerful machine.

I've been using notepad for the longest and believe my eyes now can move
independently of each other. I am now using a utility called WinVi which is
freeware and comes in 4 different languages and packs a list of features. this
is much better than the old notepad. http://www.winvi.de/en/
I'd also be interested in what others are using.

Speaking of logs -- what do people use to read them?

Does anybody use splunk -- do you like it -- does it help?

Re: Log size and server performance (Log file editor)

2010-04-22 Thread Nicky Madjarov
Unix has very convenien split command, if you split the log in chunks of 50
MB you can look into them with vi or some other editor.

I use textpad - the only way I've found to open up some of the bigger files.

Re: Log size and server performance (Log file editor)

2010-04-22 Thread Ramey, Anne
On linux I generally use less to peruse the log, it works OK up until a gig or
so, then it's painfully slow.
