Re: MVP 2012 - Congratulations LJ Longwing!

2013-02-07 Thread arslist
So far 62 votes, a few interesting suggestions and happily names I don't
recognize, which isn't easy.

However, it is still only 62. Of 4800 directly registered listers.

As I told LJ and the others in our midnight on discussion:

IF there is a really big, and by big I mean say, 10% of the list,

That sends emails or creates a really long thread about continuing it,

I might be convinced to bring it back.

But with 2.5% voting, although they usually reach the right conclusion,

It says to me that the ARSlist is a commodity now and there isn t that much
interest in

The Award.

To Clarify and somewhat repeat what I said at the conference:

There is no longer a separate session for the ARSlist Awards, it is part of an
opening session dedicated to all awards

The ARSlist carries on, and for now as just an email list

Doing some Awards related to the ARSlist carries on

The ARSlist MVP Award is now retired

I will be doing the 20th Anniversary of the ARSlist next year.

Twinkies and Hawaii shirts have a life of their own.

I will be throwing a wrinkle into that next year as well J

2012-10-23 Thread Joe Martin D'Souza

Hey Natalie,

I can see where you are coming from but I think you still can vote for those
you think you find useful from your perspective, even though developers like us
may or may not agree with you.. You may pleasantly be surprised at how close
your choice was to some of us..

Its like voting for a President or a Prime Minister.. You do not really need to
personally know everything about economic or current affairs or matters related
to to the governance of a state or country. You still have the right to cast a
vote, irrespective of how knowledgeable or ignorant you are in those matters,
simply because you are a citizen of that state or country you live in and sort
of know some qualities that you like or dislike about different candidates AND
most importantly because you have the RIGHT to vote being a eligible citizen of
that country or state..

As an ARS Lister I think you have every right to express that opinion by way of
a vote, as much as we developers here have, in appreciation of a nominee that
you prefer to win..

That’s just my two cents..

Joe

Ok, I didn’t vote because I’m a tester and not a developer and no one has
really helped me with any testing questions (due to there being no other
full-time testers I know of on the list). Also, since I don’t develop, I felt
unqualified to speak as to whose development-related posts are the most helpful.

But I would definitely like to see the MVP kept alive. And I might even make
it to next year’s WWRUG.

Using raw numbers of the number of registrations on the list,

1% voted. In other words, under 50 votes.

Let’s see if we beat that on comments about keeping it before you

get too excited about it returning.

The only reason I am ending it is because I think the level of voting reflects
the level of interest;

Daniel,

I've bee over 14 year participant of ARList. Unfortunately mostly silent
participant. I have vote only few times for MVP. This year I missed an
announcement about the voting!!! Maybe due to the reason my ARlist mailbox got
corrupted and I missed some of the ARList mails. I've been to RUG only once
(during unspoken company Remedy dark time ;-)), once when it was in Europe
I think it would have been great loss for the whole community if ARList MVP will
be cancelled. I would rather to treat that announcement as rather dark,
non-Friday humour message. Dan, please do keep MVP voting Alive.

Best regards to all Listers,

Re: MVP 2012 - Congratulations LJ Longwing!

2012-10-23 Thread Cecil, Ken
Comparing to the registration could be misleading since many people are
probably not active on the list. Why not compare as a percentage of the total
number of unique users that have posted anything in the last year or two?

Also I missed the nomination/vote discussions completely when I was on leave.

I just counted the number of votes again.
Using raw numbers of the number of registrations on the list,
1% voted. In other words, under 50 votes.

Let’s see if we beat that on comments about keeping it before you
get too excited about it returning.

The only reason I am ending it is because I think the level of voting reflects
the level of interest;
and reflects that the arslist and participation in it is now for the most part
taken for granted.

Activity on, and interest in, the actual list has not grown in the last couple
of years, but certainly has not diminished either!

Keep Calm, Carry On.

But it is not from a lack of interest. Far from it. This list is the most

So mea culpa...mea maxima culpa. But I will vote next year!!!

First - Congrats LJ. It was a pleasure meeting you at RUG this year.

Second -Thanks to everybody for their list participation.

Third - Dan, I think you should do at least ONE more year of awards. If you
get the same kind of turnout next year, then ok, but then you'll get to end
it on the 20th anniversary. :-)

LJ has a definite point about participation in the ARSlist awards. I was
not aware that voting was so lethargic. Even if you're not an active poster
you certainly gain knowledge from the various posts. When the first
requests for nominations and voting are sent you should respond immediately.
Not only did Dan and Joel initially set this wonderful facility in motion,
Dan has spent many hours over the years maintaining it. Everyone who didn't
vote should examine the disrespect they have shown Dan and make sure that if
Dan can be convinced to go one more round of voting next year that you all
step up to the plate and do the right thing. So little is asked of you to
support this service. For many of you this is 'free' support, you need to
do your part! And it is a tradition that should not be let go of.

LJ ... congratulations for sure on a well deserved win. I've utilized much
of the information you have published and I doubt that I'm the only one.
The other nominees are to be congratulated too, I know that Jason Miller is
also a very active poster. These guys use their own personal time to help
all of us out. The award is a justified show of appreciation for their hard
work and way for us to let those who go the extra mile know we value those
efforts.

You can be sure you'll hear from me come voting time next year!

2 - Dan announced at the awards that there will be no ARSList Awards next
year and that this year was the last MVP. After extensive discussion with
him one on one, he told me that if the community at large didn't care enough
to vote for an MVP, then one shouldn't be declared. At this rate there was
somewhere in the realm of a 2% voting rate of overall recipients of this

There were over 10 THOUSAND posts to the list last year, and only 100ish

attitude.. if the finial listing would go out like a multiple choice on
facebook then you will definitely get a lot of hits..

name : yes

name : yes
Choose one.. button pressed.. I guarantee the numbers would go up.. OR
John ! could you provide this ? Kinetic Survey !

Sorry LJ:: but I must also confess: I would have voted for ya !!!

2012-10-22 Thread Susan Palmer
LJ has a definite point about participation in the ARSlist awards. I was
not aware that voting was so lethargic. Even if you're not an active
poster you certainly gain knowledge from the various posts. When the first
requests for nominations and voting are sent you should respond
immediately. Not only did Dan and Joel initially set this wonderful
facility in motion, Dan has spent many hours over the years maintaining
it. Everyone who didn't vote should examine the disrespect they have shown
Dan and make sure that if Dan can be convinced to go one more round of
voting next year that you all step up to the plate and do the right thing.
So little is asked of you to support this service. For many of you this is
'free' support, you need to do your part! And it is a tradition that
should not be let go of.

LJ ... congratulations for sure on a well deserved win. I've utilized much
of the information you have published and I doubt that I'm the only one.
The other nominees are to be congratulated too, I know that Jason Miller is
also a very active poster. These guys use their own personal time to help
all of us out. The award is a justified show of appreciation for their
hard work and way for us to let those who go the extra mile know we value
those efforts.
You can be sure you'll hear from me come voting time next year!

Thank you to all that nominated and voted for me...it is a great honor.

2 things for the list.

1 - The plaque maker apparently didn't use proper quality control processes,
and the award is mounted upside down on the plaque. I have decided NOT to fix
it, and will proudly display it upside down as was apparently intended.

2 - Dan announced at the awards that there will be no ARSList Awards next year
and that this year was the last MVP. After extensive discussion with him one
on one, he told me that if the community at large didn't care enough to vote
for an MVP, then one shouldn't be declared. At this rate there was somewhere
in the realm of a 2% voting rate of overall recipients of this list.

There were over 10 THOUSAND posts to the list last year, and only 100ish people
decided that it was worth their time to thank anyone for the help provided?

If Dan decides to allow an MVP vote next year, I'm going to be doing my best to
rally the troops and ensure that we have a good voter turnoutI don't think
a 10% turnout is unreasonable
