RKM 7.06.03 and the Fat Client

Re: RKM 7.06.03 and the Fat Client

2011-03-24 Thread strauss
People here are asking if the RKM 7.6.04 content will be available to mobile
devices. You can get to our RKM 7.2 content through our FAQ links or the
public portal fairly easily from something like a tablet, or even a Palm Pre,
but have to zoom in and out and scroll around to see everything; however, it
does work. I’m guessing that since RKM 7.6.x forces you through mid-tier, and
mid-tier does not work on mobile devices, that moving to 7.6.04 will block us
from making the RKM content available on mobile devices. That’s supposed to be
progress, correct?

Chris,

That's what 3rd party mobility solutions are for :)

I say BS! I don't need more servers, apps and support contracts to do what
is quickly becoming (or has become) standard functionality in business. Oh
sure BMC will resell Aeroprise to you so it is conveniently on the same
support contract... But it still is more infrastructure and more money.

Oh, I agree completely. And since the last resale we got from BMC was
Alarmpoint – which we’ve never successfully implemented – another 3rd party app
is not likely (except maybe Kinetic FAQ). It’s much more likely that our upper
management will start looking at competing products. In the meantime, I’m
betting that I will have to keep the RKM 7.2 server up even if we successfully
move the ITSM systems to 7.6.04.

Re: RKM 7.06.03 and the Fat Client

2011-03-24 Thread Chowdhury, Tauf
While we're on the topic, here are a couple of other things to be aware
about when migrating from 7.2 to 7.6.xx:

1. You will lose all Authoring History
2. You will lose all Revision History
3. Bug: If you have Global Attachments, using the article
conversion relates Global Attachments to every single article
4. Limitation: In 7.6.03, articles that have more than 5 images in
the article will lose the other images (limit of 5). 7.6.04... the limit
is 10.
5. There is a defect open to address #'s 1 and 2.
6. One workaround that we used for #1 is to create a custom
universe in Analytics and join by DocID (There is a table in the RKM
schema in 7.2 that holds authoring history) and running reports to look
up the history.
7. #2 is tough. There is a Revisions folder that holds individual
xml'ish files referring back to the parent DocID but there is no
intelligent way to automate this.

Of course if any of the above mentioned stuff is not important to you,
then you're golden! :)
