Re: java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space.

2011-08-10 Thread Ortega, Jesus A
I have been having this problem for two months and have a critical ticket
opened with BMC. We were on MT 7.5.3. It took almost two months to talk to a
US based engineer and get the proper support. They had me do a number of things:
- Patch the mid-tier to 7.5.7,
- Decrease perm size to 128 and max to 256 (I had it 256m -512m)
- Turned on persistent caching, this caused some instability so I turned it off
- set the following in Tomcat's configuration page under the Java options tab:
-XX:+HeapDumpOnOutOfMemoryError
- there was a setting in the mid-tier config.properties files that is set
incorrectly out of the box and has to do with ecache:
arsystem.ehcache.referenceMaxElementsInMemoryWeight.formFields=28.577. It
should be set to 8.577

After all of this, we still had crashes every Monday and Wednesday mornings. In
the end, drum roll please, it was the AR Server Administration setting for Max
Entries Returned by Getlist in the Server Information\configuration tab. It
was set for 0, which would allow a user to do a search on the mid-tier that
would allow thousands of rows to be returned. It turned out that some users
would do a search on Asset Management and would request 2 - 6 rows and
consume 450mb of heap space in Java. Since we are setting our heap space to
1024 and our server runs at an average of 700mb, the 450mb query would cause
the java heap errors. I set maximum on Getlist to 1000 rows, but this caused AR
System to start crashing. So, I bumped it up to 1 rows and it seems to be
working okay and Tomcat has not crashed in a week. Check on the Max Entries
Returned by Getlist and see if that helps. I ask this to the other admins, what
is the happy medium for Getlist that will not cause AR System to crash? I am
still going through trial and error, but 1 rows seem to be a okay for now.

Re: java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space.

2011-08-10 Thread Andrew C Goodall
FYI - be careful on setting a max on getlist on the server on which
escalations run. If you have escalations that need to fetch many records
then they could be impacted by this setting.

As a result we set Getlist max to 2000 on forward facing AR servers
(only servers lists on Load Balancer that users can interact with), and
set it to unlimited (0) on the backend/admin AR server (primary for sub
system process in AR server group ranking)

We have been using it with 3000 row limit without any crashes on user
facing servers.
On non-user facing server we set it upto 30,000 for reports etc...
Also there is a table chunk size -- we set it to 200 rows.

Re: java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space

2007-05-21 Thread Easter, David
but do I need to log a ticket with support to get an 'official'
answer?

Yup.

None of the documents I can find (even looking directly at ServletExec
docs) tells me how to increase the heap size.

Sorry - did not intend to imply that they did. I was just pointing out
that the documentation for the Mid-Tier is contained in a different
place in AR System 6.3 vs. 7.0. Just trying to be helpful...

What I usually do is put all my PDF's into one directory. Then I can
use Adobe Acrobat Reader to search all of them at once. In searching
for heap through the 7.0 documents, the only reference of interest I
find is:

If you find that the number of search results is limited and you
receive an out of memory error message, increase the Maximum Heap Size
in your Virtual Machine Settings of your servlet engine.

Hopefully the folks here have already pointed you in the right direction
on how to increase the heap size on ServletExec. If not, here's the FAQ
from New Atlanta (the company that builds ServletExec).

Hi..,

Patch 20 was supposed to fix the memory leak issues and they have fixed
couple of defects as well. But anyways, if we are getting
java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space, then its always preferred to first
try to change the Xms and Xmx values.

I am sure that -Xms 1024 and-Xmx 1024 will revolve the issue or atlease
enhance the performance. If the performance is poor, you may consider to
increase the values by 512 or 1024 again.

Hope this resolves the issue for you.

  Kind Regards,
  Mahesh

In the STARTSERVLETEXEC.bat file

c:\Program Files\j2sdk1.4.2_13\bin\java -Xms512m -Xmx512m -classpath

You will need to ADD at least the maximum (e.g. -Xmx512m) memory allocation

300M (not Kilo) would be a starting point, but could go higher depending on
the applications you have (ie, if you have ITSM 6 or 7). Particurly if you
have no other applications on the Midtier box you might want to simply go up
to 1024M. 512M is perfectly reasonable too.

I would also recommend that you don't directly edit the VMSettings, but use
the admin web page:

http://locahost/servlet/admin

I have had issues where manually edited changes were ignored or overwritten.

In the Servelet directory (i.e. c:\Program Files\New Atlanta\ServletExec
AS\se-webservername )

In the STARTSERVLETEXEC.bat file

c:\Program Files\j2sdk1.4.2_13\bin\java -Xms512m -Xmx512m -classpath

You will need to ADD at least the maximum (e.g. -Xmx512m) memory allocation
specification.

I did the minimum (e.g. -Xms512m) and maximum.

Good luck.

I have had issues where manually edited changes were ignored or overwritten.

LJ,
I can't remember for sure off the top of my head and I don't have
the install guides at hand, but I believe the Mid-Tier install guide says to
set the MaxHeapSize to 300K. If you have the guide, take a look in there.
I might be thinking 7.x also.

Current VM Info:mixed mode, sharing
Operating System: Windows 2003 5.2 on x86

And two boxes, one for System Input and the other for System Output

I just realized that this may have an impact...I'm running servlet Exec AS

Ok...I'm looking everywhere I can think on the BMC site for the Mid-Tier
install doc but can't even find Mid-Tier in their documentation section

LJ,
I can't remember for sure off the top of my head and I don't have
the install guides at hand, but I believe the Mid-Tier install guide says to
set the MaxHeapSize to 300K. If you have the guide, take a look in there.
I might be thinking 7.x also.

Subject: java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space

Environment
ServletExec 5.0.0.13
Mid-Tier 6.03.00 patch 021
Windows 2003
Server 6.3 Patch 20

Earlier this week we moved our Mid-Tier to a new box. Old server is a
1.4GHz with 2GB Ram...new box is 2.6GHz with 4GB Ram. Both boxes are same
version of software...minimal config (if any) on ServletExec. On the new
web server we started seeing these errors

[Fri May 18 13:16:36 MDT 2007] java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space
[Fri May 18 13:16:36 MDT 2007] ServletExec: caught exception -
java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space

About the only thing I have been able to do was restart the entire server to
get it to work again.

I found an article that said to look in the VMSettings.perf file for the
line

maxHeapSize

It recommended increasing its settingwell I did have a VMSettings.perf
file...but it only contained the lines

version=1
systemOut=com.newatlanta.servletexec.SESystemOutputStream
systemErr=com.newatlanta.servletexec.SESystemOutputStream

So I checked the old server and the exact same thingso now I'm confused
how my new server with faster processing power and more memory is having
memory issues where my old one wasn't. So...I added the following line to
the perf file

maxHeapSize=128000 (this particular post's recommendation)

But I just got another of the errors (although doesn't seem to be down like
it was before)...recommendations on how large that maxHeapSize value should
be? BTW...this is all custom application development...0 OOTB apps. This
server will eventually also house the production App as wellwhat is the
default size?should I take it to 512MB?

I eagerly anticipate your recommendations
