[AsburyPark] Re: Parking Space's

2006-07-13 Thread jerseyjohn99
Let's see. On a certain property on the waterfront where 138 units are
to be built, the original valuation came in at $175,000, or $1,268 per
unit. Figure a housing unit is the size of approximately 20 cars,
you're looking at $63.40 for the space. Of course, that's based on
prime oceanfront real-estate. 6 blocks away, you have to chop off at
least 75% of that value. So, based on Redevelopment Math, we're
talking $15.85.

Besides, no one wants to park there anyway, and it will bring badly
needed ratables.

That is something said time and time again and I don’t understand it.  Why do you think it is not possible to bring Asbury Park back to the way people remember it?

Well at least I got a dialog started here. All I have been reading
in the past is how terrible the new construction is and how long it is
taking(True). My point is simple. Asbury (with some exceptions) has
looked liked a war zone for a long time. Bringing new construction
and people can only be an improvment and it should create more job
opportunites for the local residents. I didn't mean to create any
verbal abuse. I just think everyone should appreciate that it will
never be as good as our memories are.

The Asbury Park City Council votes next Wednesday, July 19, on whether

a message to a board such as this is intended for all eyes to see and anyone
who wants should and can respond, it's a discussion board. Just because someone
has an opinion doesn't make them ignorant. I know less than zero about
architecture, rarely do I voice an opinion other than I like it or I don't like
it, but that doesn't mean I am ignorant. When I disagree with someone's
opinion, I do not call them ignorant, or any other derogatory names. I am above

[AsburyPark] Re: I hope Asbury doesn't lose all of the character that made it special

2006-07-13 Thread Hinge
Let's not fight here.
We can all benefit from having a multilateral discussion.
Werner is a historian and like many of us, he's dismayed by the loss of the
history that put
Asbury on the map in the first place.
Some of us are fortunate enough to be of an age when we had the chance to
experience
the history of Asbury, but for many, that history now only exists on the pages
of coffee
table books and websites.
I, for one don't see an attractive future for Asbury...I just see another
homogenized piece
of America, devoid of culture. Once all this development is done, what's going
to
distinguish Asbury from the Long Branch beachfront?
This is where it gets stickysome would argue that we need to build housing,
to attract
new people and pump money into the system.
But, Asbury wasn't completely founded on that principle. It was a resort town,
full of
amazing architecture. It wasn't just a place to shop or live. It was a place to
visit and leave
with wonderful memories. When I was a kid, I used to get so excited about going
to
Asbury that i'd occasionally puke just thinking about it.
I wish the oceanfront redevelopment wouldn't just turn that area into a
glorified shopping
mall and condo complex.
There was once magic in the air in Asbury...things like the smell of chocolates
being made
in Criterion, the screams of people on the roller coaster. The pop of toy guns
at the
arcades, and the throngs of smiling faces promenading on the boardwalk.
It's a crime that a greater effort wasn't made to preserve some of that
uniqueness. There
were a number of buildings in AP that couldn've been saved so that the progress
of
redevelopment could've blended with the history.
I can't see many memories being made in the future memory if things keep going
the way
they are. I for one have never waxed poetically about visiting Payless shoes in
the mall, or
how exciting it was to go shopping anywhere.
Take a look at Atlantic Cities former Steel Pier. It's now an ugly shopping
mall, just like
every shopping mall in the country. Once you get inside of one of those, you
might as well
be anywhere in America, because they're all the same.
I've used this analogy before, so forgive me, but I don't want to see Asbury
become like
the background I used to see in the Flintstones when they were driving
around...where
you'd see the same rock/tree/house go repeatedly by over and over.
There is alot more to redevelope in Asbury then just the oceanfront. Except for
Sunset
Ave., every avenue into and thru our city is ugly as can be. Asbury Ave. is
ugly. Main street
is ugly. Those are the places that give new comers their first impression of
our city. I think
they need quite a bit of attention too. In a way, it's just like the first
impression that many
people who come to NJ via Newark airport have about our state. Land in Newark,
and no
matter where you are headed, you still need to drive thru some really ugly
stuff to get
there. Jersey used to be the subject of many jokes because of that.
I don't want Asbury to be a joke anymore.
And I think we need people like Werner who wants to preserve the past.
Sincerely, Jack

ah Dennis, why are you answering my message ? It was not addressed to you.

I was asking s325run1 to support the position he/she stated:

"I hate to cause trouble but most of you are living in the past. Asbury lost
it's character 50
years ago and it is never going to be the same. Why don't you want it to turn
into a beautiful ,
safe place to live in a multicultural atmosphere."

Regarding being offended at the word ignorant, that displays an ignorance of
it's meaning.

I readly admit to ignorance in the following subjects: sports, fine art,
cooking, and many
other topics that you will never hear me speak of.

Werner

How about some facts instead of rhetoric.

Is that a threat?

ah Werner, everyone is always ignorant or a moronhow asbury crude of
you.
What you missed was the mistaken idea that anyone would not want to see
asbury be what is was,
a safeplace, a multi-cultural place, and asbury's beauty transcends even
the current decay that is
going unchecked except in a few small pockets where the private owners
of property have the wherewithal, the guts and guile, the money, and the
determination to continue on despite the moronic backward, or is that
sideways?, efforts of those few curmudgeons who constantly
stop every little construction project seeking to rehabilitate the
aforementioned decay so prevalent in so many structures in asbury park.

Unfortunately your assertion displays ignorance regarding accepted practices in
redevelopment and community revitalization.

Please explain, from your point of view, how the current development direction
of Asbury
Park meets State and Federal standards, and how it will benefit the entire City.

How will this vision of yours "a beautiful , safe place to live in a
multicultural atmosphere" be
fulfilled?

Unfortunately your assertion diplays ignorance regarding accepted practices in
redevelopment and community revitalization.

Please explain, from your point of view, how the current development direction
of Asbury
Park meets State and Federal standards, and how it will benefit the entire City.

How will this vision of yours "a beautiful , safe place to live in a
multicultural atmosphere" be
