Get right to the point: One of the mainstays of California's highly successful antismoking campaign is a TV commercial in which a man's flirtation with a woman fails when the cigarette in his mouth begins to droop. Experience in California indicates that while adolescent males may not be particularly worried about their mortality, they are concerned about their sexuality. In Thailand, cigarette packs carry in large type the warning Cigarette smoking causes sexual impotence. Yahoo! [AsburyPark] Oscar Nod For Hester!
'Freeheld' nominated for best documentary On gay couple's fight for pension rights By ELEANOR O'SULLIVAN MOVIE WRITER Freeheld,'' a documentary about a terminally ill Ocean County investigator's fight to transfer her pension to her domestic partner, is in the running for an Oscar. The 38-minute film about the late Detective Lt. Laurel Hester of the county Prosecutor's Office was nominated Tuesday for an Academy Award for best documentary short subject. Bolstered by national media attention and an advocacy campaign, Hester succeeded in getting the county Board of Freeholders to grant her pension to her partner, Stacie Andree. Hester died of brain cancer at age 49 in February 2006. Cynthia Wade, the director of the film, said Tuesday from the Sundance Film Festival in Utah, where Freeheld'' debuted last year, that she had not expected to make the film that eventually was completed. But, she said, as soon as she met Hester, she knew she had to make the film. Wade temporarily left her two children and husband in New York City to live part-time with Hester and Andree in Point Pleasant. Cynthia deserves every bit of credit,'' Andree said Tuesday night. She repeated that she has mixed feelings about the documentary and the nomination. It's exciting. I know I'll never meet someone else who will say they were part of an Oscar-nominated film,'' Andree said. Unfortunately, part of it is about the passing of my wife. It's certainly a learning tool,'' she said, and with the presidential election coming, it's a controversial issue I hope is discussed.'' Wade said: Now my older daughter is in second grade, and she will tell you that all couples, gay or straight, should be granted the same rights. This became a family project with one family showing support for another,'' Wade said. Hester, who had spent 25 years investigating tough cases in Ocean County, is seen at home in her last weeks of life as she and Andree refused to back down when the freeholders denied her request to leave her pension to Andree. Twenty-four years is a long time in the closet,'' Hester said as the controversy gained national attention. And were it not for this set of particular circumstances, I would not have to be here to announce my sexuality because, frankly, it's nobody's business.'' At the time, she said that her concern for the plight of other same- sex couples everywhere led her on a quest that not only ended her years in the closet, but put her in the center of an intense media spotlight. Andree, an auto mechanic, had been Hester's partner for six years. Confronting Hester's impending death and the struggle for pension rights moved her to take a public stand. In chronological fashion, the film follows both the escalation of Hester's battle with the freeholders and the decline of her health. Media attention and an advocacy campaign helped Hester win her case. Freeheld'' also captures the deep love between Hester and Andree as they faced the reality of losing each other. The film shows public demonstrations at the county courthouse in Toms River as well as quiet, tender moments between the couple at home. Freeheld'' has won numerous awards so far, including the special jury prize at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival. The Academy Awards will be announced Feb. 24. Yahoo! [AsburyPark] Maxie Update
Hi Everyone. I'm posting this on behalf of Maxie's owners... All, We have sad news, more than two months ago in mid-November we asked for your help in finding our Maxie, we are writing today with the final chapter. Maxie was found today in Deal Lake, only a few blocks from where she went missing. From the appearance of her coat and body, she had been in the water for quite some time. We will always be grateful for your help (in actions, comforting words, and prayer). While we are extremely hurt and pained by the news, we are grateful to have closure. Re: [AsburyPark] Maxie Update Pixi Bobs too
I'm very sorry for your precious loss. I know how much a pet means to the owners and the grieving process can be just as long for a pet as it would be for a beloved relative. In fact, your pets are apart of your family, just as a child. They cost just as much. At least that is what I believe. Just remember the good times and when possible get another pet to ease the pain if you can. I know from where I speak. And I hope my story will bring you comfort in your time of loss. I too had to bury 2 precious pixi bobs since Dec. The medical bills are huge, but I tried to comfort each of them because they brought me much joy, laughter and love into my life for years. And any thing I could have done to let them know how much they meant to me was my pleasure. We had a very nice painless passing because each of us knew we did all we could have done. I brought her home from the hospital on my birthday to be with her family. And when it was time, my Precious Sheba took her last walk from the dinning room into the kitchen, said her goodbyes, headed towards the door and died. My heart jumped because I thought she was better. It was such a courageous jester that she did to comfort me, I laughed, then cried. Her kittens enjoyed fish, beef and chicken breast after the burial, licked their chops and playing together gracefully, Even though they knew we would have to perform another ritual in a month. 17 month old Eloise Precious Sheba, my late mother's name sake never made a sound when it was her time. She was strong enough to delay her death for a month. She spent New Year's in hospital and when we found out she wasn't pregnant, we brought her home in hopes of a miracle. On a diet of antibiotics, vitamines and chicken breast smoothies her last days were spent jumping up on my bed. And EACH TIME SHE WAS SUCCESSFUL WITH HER JUMP, the look on her face was that of NOT BAD FOR A DEAD GIRL. I laughed with delight in hopes of defying the doctors last rites. But in the end, she just jumped up on my bed Monday night, laid in her basket and went to sleep. I was so confident I'd have another day with her that I too slept like a baby only to wake up next to her cold little body. I was amazed that she never uttered a sound so as not to awaken me to distress. I thanked her for her grand jester. Her sisters had stir fry, chicken breast smoothies, licked their chops and are now playing gracefully...in hopes of not repeating this ritual again for a long, long time to come. Thank you for allowing me to share with you in your time of grief. Shangazi nferreira2000 [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi Everyone. I'm posting this on behalf of Maxie's owners... [AsburyPark] AsburySteve
Went to the City Council meeting tonight. I spoke about the 1 year anniversary of Congressman Frank Pallone not bringing the money to the West Side Community Center as promised. Putting aside how anyone feels about me or him personally, I think it's at least fair to bring it up since he promised and didn't come through. When I sat down, AsburySteve was sitting behind me. He leaned toward me and 3 times called me a j.o. (he used the whole words). I told him that he probably won't get my endorsement for City Council now :-) Seriously though, I don't think I'm going to say too much about him. I took a good long look and listen tonight when he was at the mic. I think there is an issue there. So, I would feel kinda bad if I went back at the guy only to find out later that there's an issue. At worst I say ignore him, at best humor him and maybe he'll calm down. Yahoo!
