[AsburyPark] NYT: Former Carousel Now Home for Hair
Former Carousel House Now a Home for `Hair' By GWEN OREL ASBURY PARK, from August 10, 2008 NYT http://tinyurl.com/6r2kc3 http://tinyurl.com/6r2kc3 THE Carousel House has been empty for years, but from Aug. 15 to 31, it will be filled with the sounds and sights of the Age of Aquarius. The recently restored building is the setting for Hair, the first fully staged production by the nonprofit ReVision Theater here. ReVision's founders, Tom Morrissey, David E. Leidholdt and Stephen Bishop Seely, came to know one another through the Genesius Theater Guild, based in Manhattan and started in 1995 by Mr. Morrissey, 52. ReVision became the new incarnation of Genesius this year. The three men, who share a house as well as the title of producing artistic director, moved to Asbury Park this spring. They wanted to start a regional theater that could incubate work for Broadway, like the Barrington Stage Company in Massachusetts, where Mr. Leidholdt, 43, had worked as an associate producer. We opened atlases, picking out cities, said Mr. Seely, 35. They sought a town that was developing, diverse and gay-friendly. Mr. Morrissey added: All the other towns we looked at didn't need us. We want to make an impact. The performance of Hair will be in the round; seats will be on risers and on floor cushions, with the cast performing on a platform and on three scaffolding towers. The director is Andy Goldberg, of Bomb-itty of Errors, the hip-hop Shakespearean play. Built as part of the Casino entertainment complex on the Boardwalk, the Carousel House, which dates to 1929, had a carousel in place from about 1932 to 1990, according to Helen Chantal Pike, a historian and author of Asbury Park's Glory Days (Rutgers University Press, 2005). Later occupants included a skateboard park and flea market. According to Courtney Johnson, marketing director for the real estate company Madison Marquette, one of the owners of the Carousel House, it has been given a new roof and cupola, replacement glass and iron gates. Other performances and art exhibits will take place there in the future, she said. ReVision's plans include smaller shows during the year, a holiday show and summer musicals in a variety of places, with both new works and reimagined classics expected. ReVision has a group, ReScript, that reads submitted plays and is run by Lou Liberatore, another Asbury Park resident. Mr. Liberatore also runs the Jersey Shore Writer's Studio and was nominated for a Tony Award http://www.nytimes.com/pages/theater/theaterspecial/index.html?inline=n\ yt-classifier in 1988 for his featured role in Lanford Wilson http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/w/lanford_wi\ lson/index.html?inline=nyt-per 's Burn This. ReVision's three producers have other jobs: Mr. Leidholdt teaches at a summer theater camp in Manasquan and will be a producer for American Family Theater in Philadelphia in the fall. Mr. Morrissey teaches musical theater at Wagner College in Staten Island and at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York. Mr. Seely tends bar in Asbury Park. At a pool party fund-raiser for ReVision, George Hansel, the lighting designer for Hair, said he was happy to see the group in the city. A resident for 25 years I'm a townie, he said he runs a local performing arts company called the Black Box Theater. Noting that a lot of carpetbagger types have come through Asbury Park, he said, ReVision fills a niche of quality. Besides, he added: They pay everybody, which is rare. Hair runs from Aug. 15 to 31 at the Carousel House on the Boardwalk in Asbury Park, 700 Ocean Avenue at Asbury Avenue. I think we all know what's coming, or rather going. i've been thinking they need a permanant sidewalk by the stone pony for a while. and chew on this: take a look at the new sidewalk going in by the sewage treatment plant on 7th avenue. its a PERMANENT matching sidewalk, consistant with the rest of the permanent sidewalks going in at the oceanfront... why? because the sewage plant is being finished, and thats whats going to stay there... so why bother putting in a sidewalk that needs to be taken out. just put in the permanent one. and this new sidewalk isnt connected to any other new sidewalks, its probably just gonna have blacktop leading up to it from the other sidewalks which will be replaced in coming years as projects get completed. the stone pony as we know it obviously isnt in their future plans, otherwise they would have taken the opportunity to put in the real sidewalk when the other one was ripped up (and it wasnt like they rushed in this temporary sidewalk when they ripped out the old one either, there was no sidewalk for almost a month after the old one was taken out) also, still no repairs to the damage on the side of the building from ripping out those sidewalks. (and one more thing i'd like to rant about the stone pony... could they please take down that ugly coors light triangle sign which is bolted to the front of the building... that is the tackiest piece of shit on what should be a respected historical landmark) its probably only a matter of time before they release plans for the new Casino which is probably gonna include something like a 2500 capacity stone pony knockoff. and im not too sure why either, being that MM wants retail and entertainment on both sides of ocean avenue. steps need to be taken right now to make sure this doesnt happen, otherwise they'll get their plans done and it will be too late. same idea as finding out about the bandshell. now unfortunately, many of us dont live in AP so our voices are meaningless at council meetings... and many of us, including myself, unfortunately cant go because of work schedules during the week. but there must be other ways... [AsburyPark] Re: The lights at the new Stone Pony parking lot
Perhaps there's something archeic about the way that you can only have your voice heard if you attend a council meeting. In a best case scenario, the city would have a stronger web presence in which they'd have a forum just like this one that the council is fully aware of, and a web liason who communicates the info gathered from the forum. Also, I tend to think that many people have been turned off by attending an actual council meeting. I certainly was. It felt like a complete waste of my time. Actually, let me restate that. The only person who attempted to make a connection with anybody at the council meetings I attended was Jim Keady. The rest of them just sat there blankly staring at the people giving presentations. Maybe that's changed. Hopefully it has. I also realize that our city can barely manage a partially built website, so calling for a stronger web presence is just folly. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, dapawprint [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Jack, I understand your work schedule, but at my last tally, (a few days ago) there were 339 NON-BOUNCING members in this group. Not all group members are residents, but I am willing to bet that many are. Why is it that the many pertinent issues voiced in this group are not voiced at the Council mettings? The educated answer to that is that people are not attending. I could take a day off monthly to drive down and hold hands with Rita to loudly say WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE? But I would not affect anything because I am not a resident. I do listen to the Council meeting minutes (thank you Maureen) and I long to be a resident. I did not intend to single you out Jack, I was just lamenting over the lack of participation in the Council meetings in general. Residents of Asbury Park, make your voices heard! John, I was on the Board of Adjustment from 1997-99 and while on the board, a firm known to most of the members of the present Council, knows who I'm talking about, put on the fireworks display at reasonable costs to the City, (discount) and I assumed that this firm still did. I did read somewhere that Fireworks were being paid for by MM, but I didn't think it was for ALL occasions. Someone in City Hall can clarify this. I haven't attended a council meeting in a year, because every time I do, my blood pressure rises dangerously. Age, can make one very passive. I only post what I know and if I'm mistaken, hopefully someone will clarify what I'm stating. MM and Asbury Partners get too much credit for the positive things they do and not enough criticism for botching things up and taking poetic license for breaking or flaunting the law, assuming they'll get permission to do something, garnishing them too damned much power, leading one to think, who is actually running AP. The appearance that they are, is overwhelming. I am not a native New Jerseyan, but if I have to live somewhere, I try to learn as much as possible about a place. I'm African-American, proud of it, make no excuses for what actions Blacks take that are seen as negative and can't be held liable. I am NOT Mother Africa and can only be liable for ME! I have a mindset that has taught me right from wrong from the age of 6. I came from a different environment in New Orleans where Blacks, Whites and other all lived side by side, so I don't understand why ghettos were built in a country that espouses Liberty and Justice for some, not all. I love everybody. Color is something I can speak from experience and those called racist in this group aren't, in my opinion. I know racism. The 3 whites on the council aren't racist, they are opportunists, had an agenda to save the city. It's working, but slow in coming. Judge, lest ye be judged. We've had posters ostracized for expressing themselves as being against the grain, but as Americans, their rights were violated and we all GET it. There are posters in this group, who should be the drivers of this renewal we see coming to AP. Their ideas are not only cost effective, but could save us all a lot of headaches in the long run. Many of us want to preserve and celebrate what little of the original AP we still have, like saving the theatre, bowling alley, CH, the Carousel House, Wonder Bar and Stone Pony. The Springwood Ave. that was still there when I arrived, is gone. The same problems that beset the Black Community in 1964 are still there, today. Ask anyone who was raised here and they will tell you. They want safe streets, decent housing, employment, a decent supermarket and general quality of life issues. There's room for all of us here, Whites, Blacks, Gays and other. If I had the freedom in my life to attend council meetings, I would, despite how I feel about them in our city. The bottom line for me is that our council has given more power to MM then they should have. The cities administration should be in charge, not MM. But, to me it appears that the council looks at MM with stars in their eyes, and it's blinding them to reality. Too many people are blowing smoke up MM's ass without holding them accountable for some of the BS they are getting away with, such as the band shell issue. And it's easy for MM to get away with it, because the city is desperate for things to look better then they have in years --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, wernerapnj [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, Jack Pitzer hinge98@ wrote: Perhaps there's something archeic about the way that you can only have your voice heard if you attend a council meeting. === = Its the law Jack. Regarding the lights, I brought the issue up many, many times. I even got laughed at here for raising such s 'trivial' issue. The City ignored my official testimony at meetings... now we have what we have. In addition the Pony itself has horrendous perimeter lighting as do, the MM/AP offices, ConHall, North Beach, BCH...etc, etc. I warned that it would propagate and eventually get beyond controllable. Other communities have gone so far as to adopt lighting standard ordinances that are retoactive, forcing the removal of non-complient fixtures. They are much nicer and better comminities for their efforts. Don't hold your breaths for Asbury Park to address this rather simple and 'trivial' issue. Werner Yahoo!
