Exactly. I guess the point is that someone has to monitor when these things are
happening and I'm not sure how but prevent it from getting to that point ...
Same thing happened with Palace Amusements and the city let it (enabled it?
encouraged it ... to) happen. (Was recently reading the history *there*.)

ASBURY PARK The nearly 100-year-old Baronet Theatre at 205 Fourth Ave.
was razed Wednesday morning after being declared an imminent hazard due to an
interior structural collapse, city Fire Official Garrett Giberson said.

The 546-seat theatre first opened in 1913 as the Ocean Theatre, but had
operated only on an intermittent basis in recent decades. It finally closed
for good the past few years after being purchased by Asbury Partners, the
 beachfront redeveloper.

Asbury Lanes, the popular bowling and live music venue next door at 209
Fourth Ave. was not affected, Giberson said.
 Related

Giberson said the roof of the Baronet caved in to the interior of the
theatre, probably sometime during the winter.

With the conditions found there, there was no saving it at this point,''
 Giberson said.

Mazza Demolition was on site razing the building, he said.

THE ELEMENT OF TIMING

Baronet Theatre revival expected by summer
Posted by the Asbury Park Press on 04/6/06

STAFF WRITER

The 93-year-old Baronet Theatre in Asbury Park could light back up before the
summer with films, cabaret and live theater, according to its latest owners.

The plan is to restore the theater and the Fast Lane nightclub next door as the
centerpiece of a vibrant Fourth Avenue entertainment district in Asbury Park,
and the owners say they are feeling the local support.

Asbury Park real-estate developer Pat Fasano and partner Dennis Dubrow,
Oceanport, bought the properties in December for $1.2 million, Dubrow said.

Fasano, who lives in New Brunswick, also owns the Wonder Bar at Fifth and Ocean
avenues, and several shops on Cookman Avenue, Fasano said.

Being one block from the boardwalk, though, the theater and the defunct
nightclub next door are in an oceanfront redevelopment zone, so their future
depends on Asbury Partners, developers of the area, and city officials.

Dubrow said he and Fasano were not encouraged by an initial meeting they had
with Larry Fishman, chief operating officer of Asbury Partners. Fishman could
not be reached for comment.

Undaunted, the partners have received building permits and plan to spend up to
$100,000 to fix up the buildings.

Renovation work began March 23.

The partners hope to unveil the theater, with historic architectural features
intact, by summer.

We've contracted with Days Awake, a local band, to play for our opening night
fund-raiser, Dubrow said.

We didn't want to invest more than $100,000 until we have a certificate of
occupancy, Dubrow said.

The work includes replacing walls and ceilings, washing all 500 seats and
installing new carpet, he said. Fire exits and the roof are being fixed, and
the heating and air-conditioning units improved.

This is a masonry building, so it's in good shape, he said.

so true. And if you argue about things being torn down, people shrug and say
you don't like change. Things change. Yes, of course, things change but
things can also be preserved. There's something special about certain places
and that certain 'something' should be preserved. People destroy the thing that
enticed people to the area - a certain charm, as if the ocean and boardwalk are
the only things worthwhile to Asbury's history.

Are there any activist groups working on this even back when the redevelopment
began? I can't figure it out. I live in NYC and there would be people
protesting/doing something. I know there's a group that was working on the
destruction of the trees issue.

[AsburyPark] Re: Is AP preparing to demolish The Baronet?

2010-09-23 Thread Sharon

Cathryn,
My interest in the theatre, is because of my children, who were
raised in nearby Neptune Township. Back in the 70's, a really
good, funny movie with lessons learned how even crazy adults
can get involved in the well being of children. It was The Bad News Bears!
Whenever the movie airs on TCM, Bravo or any of the regular
cable channels, I watch, get a box of Kleenex and relive my childrens childhood.

Everybody, since I was born, grownups were in my estimation, thought that kids
were a real bother! I don't know where my parents got the energy and even
nerve, to raise a hellion like me! Lucky for me,
I was in Parochial Schools all my life, until I married and found
out how the real world is. When I had kids of my own, I vowed to
make growing up almost effortless. It gave me another chance to
have a second childhood.

When I came East to live here, I found another society, so different from the
one I knew in the Deep South. I conformed. Living in Neptune, we naturally
migrated to Asbury Park, every Spring and Summer. When the kids were old
enough to bicycle down to the Palace
and Boardwalk, they would come home with their photo booth pictures,
won cheap prizes and bragged who had the most fun!

The Baronet, Palace, Convention Hall, Cookman Ave. and even Mattison Ave.,
where the dentist was, all all of the memories, my kids have of
growing up in a unique, loving way. Perfect? No, but since they all
live out of State now, it seems their memories can only be kept in their mind,
because they no longer exist. Glad you enjoyed the link.
I read every word.
Sharon

Re: [AsburyPark] Re: So you want to save a theatre?

2010-09-23 Thread Michael Downing
Here's what pisses me off about this town - recently the topic of the Baronet
was brought up in town council meetings and no one indicated anything about the
roof collapsingthe only thing mentioned was that there was a mold issue
which would need to be addressed. I find it hard to believe that the owners
suddenly realized that the roof had collapsed after such a brutally hard winter
(didn't anyone check on their investment?). I am not a builder or an expert on
construction, but wouldn't it be possible for someone to incorporate elements
of
the old structure within a renovation project - and yes, I know that would
require someone with $$$ to buy/renovate, but in the same way that the Charms
Building with all its history was leveled to make way for a nice new vacant
lot,
couldn't someone with vision have looked at other alternatives???

In the haste to rebuild and redevelop this town, it seems that certain parties
are interested in taking down any links to the past and making this look like
dozens of cookie-cutter developments that dot Texas, Illinois, Maryland, etc.
History has its place in this city - in fact, it's a huge part of what we are
and who we are. To ignore it (or cover it up under new facades and shiny
chrome
and concrete structures) is doing a huge disservice to everyone who lived here,
lives here, or wants to live here. We don't need to become another Long Branch
or another Pier Village - the last thing we need is another parking lot (which
can charge $10 - 20.00 for the right to park), or a vacant lot.

Guess it's only a matter of time before the Casino comes down behind claims and
comments about how it is structurally unsafe

Wouldn't make sense to put 'theater' in the theater a carousel in the
carousel house?? Maybe it's too simple...

That was to force Partners to buy it from them which they did at a profit.

 THE ELEMENT OF TIMING

Baronet Theatre revival expected by summer
Posted by the Asbury Park Press on 04/6/06

 STAFF WRITER

The 93-year-old Baronet Theatre in Asbury Park could light back up before the
summer with films, cabaret and live theater, according to its latest owners.

The plan is to restore the theater and the Fast Lane nightclub next door as
the centerpiece of a vibrant Fourth Avenue entertainment district in Asbury
Park, and the owners say they are feeling the local support.

Asbury Park real-estate developer Pat Fasano and partner Dennis Dubrow,
Oceanport, bought the properties in December for $1.2 million, Dubrow said.

Fasano, who lives in New Brunswick, also owns the Wonder Bar at Fifth and
Ocean avenues, and several shops on Cookman Avenue, Fasano said.

Undaunted, the partners have received building permits and plan to spend up
to $100,000 to fix up the buildings.

 Renovation work began March 23.

The partners hope to unveil the theater, with historic architectural features
 intact, by summer.

We've contracted with Days Awake, a local band, to play for our opening
 night fund-raiser, Dubrow said.

I'd support that.

Although ReVision has had much success in the Carousel House, I'd think that
they would agree that it is not the prime space. I personally rallied a while
back to get the sister Carousel to the original Carousel back in that carousel
house and I met with opposition that it should be *given* to ReVision.

And, yes, there IS a sister Carousel and it was available. Maybe it still is.

Anyhow.

The issue at hand is theater. Personally, I have not witnessed ReVison
performances (partly due to the the opposition of my effort and partly due to
the fact that our schedules never mesh), but I have heard TERRIFIC reviews! I
was in town for the Tommy dress rehearsal and what I saw was magnificent.

ReVision needs better than a carousel house and there is a Carousel out there
somewhere waiting for a home.

I see the flip side too, Revison has kept the carousel house living. I also
fear that the Casino and the Carousel House are falling subject to Demolition
upon Neglect. Though, I suspect that the Arthur Pryor Bandshell will be the
next loss. :-( Everything seems to start with the roof.

I had additional information regarding the roof of the Baronet, sadly, that
doesn't matter anymore.

So, keep me in the loop with a home for ReVision. I still would like to see a
Carousel in that Carousel House.

All my best,

Glenn

What was wanted in AP:

Burned, collapsed or was simply leveled.

One of these days, someone will come up with an entertainment square - sure
it will be the original - but it sure can tie on the downtown, the boardwalk
and the residential areas. I'd to make it real - as I said I'd tie in all
those old AP brand names. They might not be in the original, but the theme
can live on.

Shit, even Tillie found a new home on the Wonder Bar - is that right or wrong?
sure sells shirts so is Tillie the face of AP, the Palace or the WB??

Do a survey one day outside the WB.

There's names I know and names Mario knows even better. Call it fake or
whatever.

It will be ADA compliant, safe and draw a hell of alot of people. Not pier -
but a fun and live entertainment district. That has always been MM's mantra in
their lifestyle centers. This could be one that is REAL...and very cool.

We all have visions. glad I don't get excited about them anymore.

Visions need cash. A contempary art musuem, a music museum, a pinball musuem, a
music studio, saving a building, opening a popcorn store or selling something
with AP on it.

It all takes money, time and ingenuity - and the land or building to take a
shot at success or failure.

You can't have a great music destination with no music studio, can you?

Take some of the billions tossed at the schools and use some of that to have
the BOE build a theatre - for the students that can be leased back per event to
any theatre group.

The problem is, everyone with a vision wants someone to provide prime space for
nothing. Read about every musuem in the US - read about the Guggenheim.

Better yet, try donating time to some cause or board without pulling your hair
out. I'd rather watch sand blow across the beach.

I think America, in general, suffers from an identity crisis...we don't have
one. This countries communities have become so homogenized looking that it's
just plain boring in my opinion. We had an amazing identity, but we lacked
people that understood that it was vital to preserve it.
What we get instead is a constant state of marginal rebuilding driven by an
undercurrent of greed. Money rules, not cultural identity.
Meanwhile, the block where the rotting hulk of the Esperanza sits continues to
dominate our beachfront. Where's the outrage about that? Where's the plan to do
something about it? Nowhere.
