[AsburyPark] Re:Public Art in Asbury Park
The waterfalls are absolutely beautiful. And I understand they've already generated more income that they cost (although most of the cost was private, corporate donation.) The thing I loved about them too was the way they smell. All that river water spray lets you smell the river and now that it's become cleaner it smells lovely. So, as for public art in Asbury watch for a painting on the garage door of the the 4th and Main gas station. I got permission from the owner. Linda Yahoo! [AsburyPark] Re: opportunity to start a new summer tradition in ap? Film too
How about a free summer movie series like they have in Bryant Park? A little something to do at night to keep the day trippers around for dinner and shopping. Yahoo! [AsburyPark] Re: An Idea for AP - love painted barriers
Well, you gotta know I love the artist painting barriers idea. I also keep thinking about point of difference in marketing. That AP encourages art would be part of that point of difference. BTW, did you know that artists not only gentrify a neighborhood when they move in, they also keep a sort of fraudulent runaway gentrification from happening by stabilizing it. I've read this before but I'm also seeing it happen in my building on the Lower East Side. Yahoo! [AsburyPark] Artist designed Putt Putt Golf
We need more Putt-Putt! I saw an artist designed Miniature Golf at the South St. Seaport. It was really, really cool. And these things are really popular. I'd love to see one in the convention center or the Casino. The info below is from the Minneapolis version: Hours: Weather permitting, Thursday-Saturday, 10 am-8 pm; Sunday, 11 am-8 pm. Labor Day: Monday, September 6, 11 am-8 pm. Last tee time is 1 hour before closing. Wait times can be in excess of an hour. You must appear in person to get on the wait list. In case of inclement weather, Mini Golf will reopen within 30 minutes of the conclusion of the weather event. If weather remains an issue at 5pm on weekdays or 2pm on weekends and holidays, we will not reopen until the next regularly scheduled game day. The sights in the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden just keep getting more like Alice's Wonderland: to a setting that already includes a mirrored labyrinth, a bronze rabbit leaping a bell, and an enormous spoon-and-cherry fountain, add an ice-fishing shack, a twisty pachinko game, and architectural ruins from 1933-not to mention a few dozen golf clubs. Walker in the Rough, a mini-golf course designed by area artists and architects, is now open, offering 10 flights of fancy for goofy golf fanatics and novices alike. Though these stylish holes can't be placed on a par with mini golf's customary roadside-art standards of taste, they have been created especially for the Garden. Join us for mini golf, Walker-style, now through Labor Day. The Holes Black Hole, Walker staff members; O-par-ation, Troy Kampa; Pachinko Generation, Zander Brimijoin and Luke Burgdorf; Mini Golf Smackdown, Takuma Handa and Daniel Vercruysse; Winter in Summer; Ice-Fishing House, Bill Gorcica; Courthouse Folly, Clayton Johnson and Brian Nowak; Frank's Frolic, Don McNeil and Thomas Oslund; Untitled, Burlesque of North America (Mike Davis, Aaron Horkey, Skye Rossi, George Thompson, Wes Winship, and Larry Winship); Bolfing for Gowlers, Karl Frankowski; and one by Target staff members. Special thanks to the judges who selected the winning designs: Kinji Akagawa, artist; Bob Fine, President, Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board; Richard Flood, Chief Curator, Walker Art Center; Julie Snow, architect, Julie Snow Architects; Hilary Lunke, professional golfer, 2003 U.S. Women's Open Champion; and the Walker Art Center Teen Arts Council. [AsburyPark] Re: Artist designed Putt Putt -- is only temporary.
It's an event. An installation. They aren't permanent. The one in NYC had a big bunny covered in interlocking Cheetos. Asbury has some great things going for it, like artists, plenty of artists. And it seems to need winter events. I like the way the Minneapolis one worked with local HS students. You'd need a grant though. Because you'd need insurance and all. And someone to tell the artists, No, you can't use an actual swinging, skill saw. Yahoo! [AsburyPark] jailhouse shiv ditched on Main and 4th - Cameo Bar
I called the police on Sunday AM when I found the home made knife, a metal piece sharpened to act at a slashing razor (no stabbing point) with a handle made of foam wrapped in blue duct or electrical tape, in front of my house.I didn't bother my neighbor who is a police officer, since it was early in the day and I bug him enough already. Our house was a crack house with some gang connections and I've always given the bullets, live and exploded, that we've found while renovating. (This is funny in an Asbury Park way...a guest of the neighbor on the other side was telling us about the time the police did a raid and arrested a known, vicious drug dealer who'd taken up residence there. This dealer has several serious birth defects. He's a little person and his arms are truncated as if his mother or grandmother took thalidomide. But he can still ride a little bike. He steers just fine with his stumps so he gets around and is said to have an hellacious mouth on him. So our neighbor is chuckling about the time the police came and rounded up all the crack heads and how they had to put hand cuffs on this little guy with no hands. Anyway, that's history. This knife, though, wasn't 'urban archeology'. Our cop neighbor speculated that the owner of the knife came from the Cameo Bar (main bet. 4 5). Bad stuff happens there aplenty, I guess. If I could afford the web cam hook up I'd put a surveillance video in my window just to show the little crack dealer and his crew in the parking lot of the Welsh Farms on 4th and to show who leaves the Cameo Bar.
