[AsburyPark] Re: Where Music Lives? NOT
Insulting people is not the way to make your argument. And you know what, I do know a lot about the music business (a family member owns a club in town), and I do know the business is in serious trouble. I also know that Asbury Park has a bunch of empty condos already and does not need more condos sitting empty. I know that developers do not spend money to do what is best in the long term, they only invest to make money in the short term and then get out. They don't do what's best for the majority unless the government regulators force them to. I am not naive enough to think developers are going to do something solely for historical preservation reasons (and by the way, historic preservation needs a viable business plan too). But tearing down a unique structure to build a generic one that will attract a homogeneous community is not my idea of moving forward or building a strong local economy. Businesses and renters are being driven out by astronomical rent increases as it is. This has happened all over, and decimates the creativity and diversity that attracted people in the first place. The government is responsible for the mess this city is in, and they've gotten away with it because no one has held them accountable. Are individuals going to come up with the political and economic capital to rebuild without some existing infrastructure (you know, like roads, sewers, etc.) that gets regularly maintained? Read 4th of July, Asbury Park by Daniel Wolff if you want some history on this. Besides, the government is the authority here, not developers. Unless they are sitting on (or should I say leaning on) the city council, of course. I am sorry you think so little of historic preservation. There is room for development and for history; they need not be mutually exclusive. Cities like Philadelphia, Boston, New York, and Washington DC are just a few examples of how it can be done. It's only a zero sum game if you choose to make it one. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, rslnyc RSLNYC@... wrote: Lisa, While I understand your emotion, you obviously know nothing about the music business. The Fast Lane is not a viable venue, even if it was in mint condition. It's about economics, not brick and mortar. Developers build things that are economically viable. I know, the devil is in the detail. Most of the good people in Asbury who remember the good ole days have no clue as to the current disaster the live music business is in. The live music industry has changed, drastically. It will never be the way it was in the 70's. That business model is busted, big time. Additionally, its not the city government that's going to save music in Asbury. Please stop asking them. They can barely pave roads, let alone save a drowning industry. I do have a solution, Lisa: YOU buy the Fast Lane, spend the 2 mil it needs to be rehabed, build a team of admin, tech staff, bookers and book your bands! You will lose your shirt, unfortunately, like every other small live venue in the area. But, you'll preserve all of the good feelings that are important and be able to tell people you are standing in the spot that Bruce met the Ramones - that would be cool. Bye bye 4th Avenue and the music venues that supported this town during the really hard times.. Once again we see that eminent domain has reared its ugly head on the Jersey Shore, and this time, it seems we're biting the hand that feeds. Although it's been closed for a while, The FastLane is historically significant as it was the first place where many artists who later played the Pony got their start: John Cafferty Beaver Brown, Jon Bon Jovi, John Eddie. Not to mention all the prominent bands that played there over the years. And lest we forget, it's the place where Springsteen met The Ramones. Surely it deserves a better fate than the wrecking ball. And then there's Asbury Lanes, the coolest thing to happen to Asbury in a long time, a diverse, funky joint with a loyal fan base that books a wide array of bands. And Conventio Hall continues to decay. Where Music Lives...except we don't really want to preserve the music scene, do we? A strong local economy comes from economic diversity, not from endless condominium sales, trendy clubs and overpriced restaurants. Get with the program-no one is going to live in Asbury if there's nothing to do...And remember, by definition what's trendy today is passe tomorrow... Yahoo! [AsburyPark] Parking in Ocean Grove
Thanks to the parking situation in downtown Asbury Park, the streets on the north side of Ocean Grove (Neptune Township) are now flooded with daily parkers, making an already bad parking situation worse. [AsburyPark] Re: 2003
Yes, but this isn't Hoboken or Jersey City or Manhattan (unless the Met has moved in recently without my knowledge). It's the freakin' Jersey Shore, people, not the New York City metro area. I am from Washington DC where we paid $89 annually for residential parking. It was worth it a) because the parking zone was very large and b)it was Washington DC. If it were reasonable to park here, I'd pay it. But it's not. I mean, why should I pay to park near the beach in the dead of winter? Come on, even Manhattan has free on-street parking at certain hours... --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, Claire Davids claire.davids@... wrote: We have to compare it to other towns though, if you lived and worked in Hoboken, Jersey City, Manhattan in the downtown areas you would have to pay for parking (when we lived in NY we paid nearly $000s/month for parking for a car and motorbike), it's a lifestyle choice we had to accept. Living in AP and working in AP is no different to that, much cheaper, but you would expect it to be much cheaper as it's the suburbs. It's tough to impose costs on people who have not paid them until now, and I understand that is not pleasant to increase your cost of living and I truly feel for those impacted, but perhaps we've not been in a reality until now. It's not dissimilar to gas pricing, when gas was $1.50/gallon it was not a reality, the rest of the world was paying $5 to $10 / gallon if not an oil producing nation. So when it raised to $3 / $4 here it put the country in a real situation as opposed to a deflated one. I don't mean to bring this up to raise a debate on gas prices here or cause some political debate, i'm just using it as a comparison about living in reality. I think the America's Cup guy is reluctant to admit that his own push for paid parking has had a detrimental effect on his business. I work on Bond Street. Every employee at my company refused to buy a parking pass. In this economy, adding what amounts to another tax on your income simply isn't a good idea. Not only that, but I believe that if you buy the employee parking pass, you still have to park blocks away from where you work. Correct me if I'm wrong about that one. Then, if you get somebody like me, who now has to pay to park in front of his home and works downtown, you are screwed. [AsburyPark] Re: Beach Fees after Labor Day?
I don't need the boardwalk (and its overpriced overhyped restaurants) to enjoy the beach, nor do I need a lifeguard as I am qualified myself. Which leads me to my next question, and maybe I am beating a dead horse here--why does New Jersey continue to put up with beach fees? No other state in the entire country charges for beaches unless they are part of a state park. And every state I know provides lifeguards, beach maintenance, etc. as part of their state budget. In the most densely populated state in the country, there is no excuse for this except poor budgeting. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] Yahoo! [AsburyPark] Re: Beach Fees after Labor Day?
Doesn't answer my question re fees, nor does it justify it. Total gouging. What does the beach itself in Asbury offer that I can't walk down 3 blocks to Ocean Grove and get for free? And why does the city feel no obligation to tell people when badges are no longer required? They need to get over themselves. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] Yahoo! [AsburyPark] Beach Fees after Labor Day?
Does anyone know what the deal is with beach badges this year? I was out on a bike ride early Saturday morning and saw them setting up to check badges. I checked the sign at the office, and sure enough there was an opening date of May 1 (several weeks before Memorial Day, which is bad enough) and no closing date. Does this mean they'll just be randomly collecting fees whenever they feel like it instead of stopping after Labor Day like pretty much everyone else in the state? Kind of reminds me of the situation with parking meters (my husband nearly got a ticket this past March despite being told that meters were not being enforced till May)... Yahoo! [AsburyPark] Re: How NOT to make a few thousand dollars an hour....
Parking meters exist to regulate the amount of time any one car is parked at a particular location. They are not and should not be a primary source of revenue. If the city is looking to make money that way, fine. But it is not a substitute for revenue loss due to improper budget management. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] Yahoo! [AsburyPark] Directions to Casa Del Mar
Hi Susie, Casa Del Mar is not far from you. Just take Sunset to Main St., go north about 1 mile ( you'll leave Asbury and go into Allenhurst) and the restaurant is on your left. It is right next door to a liquor store which is convienent because the restaurant is BYOB. The owner's name is Mark and I'm sure he'll make your visit very pleasant. If you like sushi, tonight is half price sushi at Iko Iko in Asbury Lanes from 8 pm til 1 am, that's at 209 Fourth Ave., two blocks from the beach, Barry and the Penatrators are playing, they are a fun band. If you don't want to stay for the music but just want to eat, tell them at the door and they won't make you pay the cover charge. Happy dining! Lisa Yahoo!
