[AsburyPark] Re: How to pay for sprinklers? Perhaps its time to call Mr Springsteen.......

2013-03-28 Thread Michael Downing
Sorry, but let's not be so quick to throw a benefit for MM.  They have ample
resources and have had a number of years to address/ fix the problem of the
sprinklers (and honestly, it's comical that they are just now discovering that
staging concerts in Convention Hall and the Paramount has not been economically
feasibletheir business model for entertainment is broken).

Is it true about Bamboozle not coming back or is that just a rumor?  I've heard

been discussed in any City Council meeting yet) to moving the location
somewhere else?  I'm also curious about ATP - that was the perfect kind of

I hope this event is successful and that all goes well.  I have no worries

more concerned with the people from out of town who will come here, treat our
town poorly, scream, yell, and carry on all night as they wander and drive
through the streets between the teenagers and the drunken grandmothers here
to see Bon Jovi, it will be an interesting weekend.

[AsburyPark] Re: SOME VERY SERIOUS FINAL THOUGHTS ON WESLEY GROVE........

2012-04-12 Thread Michael Downing
I'm not so sure about your statistics on the racial make-up of AP, at least
based on the 2010 census.  But more importantly, I don't think the racial or
minority composition of the residents at WG really matters - from my POV it is
irrelevant and meaningless.

What matters is that many of the residents at WG bought here because they want
to be here - like Cathy (who posted earlier), we bought a few years ago, moved
here full-time, and remain active in the community on both sides of the tracks
(and like most of the people who own here - did not spend upwards of $500,000+
to do so).  We like the sense of community within WG but also within the entire
town, and throughout the years we have been here we have found that there are
many people who want to make a difference and help revitalize AP.  Madison
Marquette is only one part of the equation (whether that is good or bad is a
matter of perspective) - what matters most is people working together to make
the city better in big ways and small waysrevitalizing the boardwalk,
taking steps to give kids more outlets and after-school activities, helping
rebuild all parts of the retail and business community, and working together to
make the city safer.  No, I
haven't been here through the lean years but I am here now, trying to make a
difference like many others in WG and throughout the city and both proud and
happy to be here.

There are problems and issues but none that we can't work through and none that
can't be fixed through sensible actions, reasonable conversations, and working
together (btw- one of my favorite memories of the past year was going to the
high school and watching the football team play week after week, and then
journeying to Trenton to see them capture the state title - it was a proud
moment for all of us,,,black and white/gay and straight/ parents, teachers, and
just interested spectators who were proud of our kids and proud to say that
we were from Asbury Park)

[AsburyPark] Re: bamboozle.....

2011-12-14 Thread Michael Downing
Have to say that I'm not so wild about Bamboozle coming to AP (and it has
nothing to do with age or music choice - love the Foos and I've been to other
Bamboozles in the pastsadly not a Bon Jovi fan).

My concern has to do with our town's ability to handle a festival of this
size.  I understand we are getting $200K as a fee, but can our infrastructure
support what will be required.  With 40,000 concert goers coming to town, will
our roads accommodate them?  Traffic on Asbury Avenue, Sunset, Ocean, etc could
be backed up for miles and affect residents who don't really care about the
concert.  Police?  EMT's?  Will we have kids and concert goers sleeping in cars
and on the beach (given the number of hotels in town, doesn't sound like we'll
have too many accommodation options)?  And I think to expect that this will be
beneficial to the restaurants in town isn't realistic given the demographics of
the target audience..

Is there a plan in place?

Do you mean that people visiting AP are parking in Ocean Grove to save the $$$
on parking or that Ocean grove residents/visitors who parked in AP now have to
park in Ocean Grove?  Honestly, time is worth a couple of dollars - why would

police patrol repeatedly, it is free, and it is convenient.

2011-10-28 Thread Michael Downing
That's hitting the nail on the head!  I've posted about this previously - for
all the debate about parking and what's happening in AP, the real problem
downtown has to do with specialty retailers that do not draw mainstream
consumers.  Asbury has a wealth of restaurants, coffee shops, and bars but
there is no real base of business to bring people to Cookman or Bangs or Lake,
etc.  What exactly is the town/Chamber/MM doing to transform the town into a
more vibrant retail sector that can support business?

[AsburyPark] Re: Downtown paid parking went into effect today

2011-10-19 Thread Michael Downing
Definitely -this to me is the guts of the issue with AP's revitalization and
the rebuilding of the downtown area.

Right now, AP is all about food and nightlife - primarily restaurants and
bars.  There are a few specialty businesses - some that have carved out a
successful niche for themselves - but retail for the masses/mainstream is
non-existent.  And despite the triCity's constant preaching about suburban
conformity and the coolness factor we have in attracting the Brooklyn crowds,
for this city to truly grow we need a more active effort at attracting
significant businesses that draw from a wider demographic and that can exist
profitably.  I'm not ready to embrace a GAP or Banana Republic Store
(especially with the outlet mall a short drive away and both Monmouth and
Freehold Malls maintaining a significant presence in chain stores), but we need
a business model that includes retail stores that provide that destination
experience.  We also need to marry the best interests of Madison Marquette
which is truly only concerned with leasing retail space on the
boardwalk and building more condos/townhouses with the needs of the downtown
businesses.

There are a number of towns and communities in NJ that have created vibrant
downtowns that act as destinations (Montclair, Westfield, Westwood, and
Madison-Chatham as well as Princeton and Lambertville).  Make this an
attractive destination and parking will stop being such a major concern.

Hi. I live almost directly across from the Del Monte, and for the past 3 weeks,
the APPD has been there repeatedly due to the actions of 2 of it's worst
residents.
One of these people is a middle aged women who's always incredibly drunk and
drugged out. She stands in the middle of the street, flagging down cars,
begging for money while yelling and screaming Heyyy Hey over and
over, at all hours of the day and night.
The other person is a bit less obnoxious and often spends his time being
incredibly loud while he's on his non-stop drunken stupor.
These folks are making things a bit uncomfortable in our neighborhood. Every
time somebody comes to visit me, the lady waddles across the street and
confronts my friends for money. I've even had to call the PD on her when she
was pulling down her pants to pee right in the middle of 1st at 5 pm a few
weeks ago.
Having the PD visit there 4 times in one evening such as last night is an
incredible waste of our PD. Nothing ever changes. They talk to them, and when
the PD drives away it's right back to their bullshit.
The boarding houses management does nothing. And the house also appears to be a
hotbed of drug dealing. People pull up at all hours, go inside, and off they go.
Does anybody have any suggestions as to what can be done about this?

Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Not in AP.....

2010-11-12 Thread Michael Downing
As a relatively new resident to AP (one of those who bought into Wesley Grove
in
2009), I'm not sure how much new residential construction the town can support
right now. I think the biggest challenge and most important thing that needs
to
be done is to make our retail and commercial sectors viable - not just in a
non-conformist manner like the TriCity News continually advocates, but with
an
eye towards providing goods and services that benefit all residents. The key
to
growing any city is making the infrastucture viable.

We've got a significant number of restaurants in operation (most of which are
pretty good), but we need more businesses that reach beyond select niches and
appeal to a broader range of customers and residents. The schools need help,
there is still a significant issue of homelessness and crime, kids need more
activities to get them off the streets, and we need to do a better job of
making
this one community. Above all else, we have to find a way of attracting jobs
and new businesses to the community.

I don't mind my commute into JC, and a lot of people I work with live in
Interlaken, Bradley etc

The schools are a major issue for me though, once my fiance and I get to that
point in our lives, ill be a weekender very quickly, I refuse to pay for
private
schools, and there's not a shot in hell my kids would go to our school system
in
its current

conditions

I know quite a few families who have passed on AP strictly because of the
schools (they were ok with the crime) but the schools were a deal sealer

is
with the single family homes. Condos would be more appealing for this due to
maintence and such.

I will say it again, it will be very very hard for AP to attract 3,000 year
round households. NJ is loosing jobs like crazy. You need to be within easy
commuting distance to an employment center, or create a place where people will
want to live despite the commute or they are retired or independently wealthy.
And for families, its a chicken and egg thing. To get families you need good
schools. And the latter will only happen is when you get more of a mix of
families in AP to be involved with the school and their children's education.
So
if you build a lot of condos, you will depend upon weekenders not necessarily
summer people. I am a weekender. A lot of us that own houses here are. We don;t
work nearby and so we can't live here full time.

Re: [AsburyPark] Re: So you want to save a theatre?

2010-09-23 Thread Michael Downing
Here's what pisses me off about this town - recently the topic of the Baronet
was brought up in town council meetings and no one indicated anything about the
roof collapsingthe only thing mentioned was that there was a mold issue
which would need to be addressed. I find it hard to believe that the owners
suddenly realized that the roof had collapsed after such a brutally hard winter
(didn't anyone check on their investment?). I am not a builder or an expert on
construction, but wouldn't it be possible for someone to incorporate elements
of
the old structure within a renovation project - and yes, I know that would
require someone with $$$ to buy/renovate, but in the same way that the Charms
Building with all its history was leveled to make way for a nice new vacant
lot,
couldn't someone with vision have looked at other alternatives???

In the haste to rebuild and redevelop this town, it seems that certain parties
are interested in taking down any links to the past and making this look like
dozens of cookie-cutter developments that dot Texas, Illinois, Maryland, etc.
History has its place in this city - in fact, it's a huge part of what we are
and who we are. To ignore it (or cover it up under new facades and shiny
chrome
and concrete structures) is doing a huge disservice to everyone who lived here,
lives here, or wants to live here. We don't need to become another Long Branch
or another Pier Village - the last thing we need is another parking lot (which
can charge $10 - 20.00 for the right to park), or a vacant lot.

Guess it's only a matter of time before the Casino comes down behind claims and
comments about how it is structurally unsafe

Forget it. AP could give a shit about it's history. It's the American way. We
don't build things to last for generations. This country is more about
homogenization that preserving and building character.
It's ironic that one could go to Europe, and live in, shop in, and visit
buildings created 500 years ago, and they are doing fine, but in this backwards
country, we can't even hold onto things built 100 years ago. It's pathetic...

There's another theatre on 7th right off kingsley. It was the Adams Novelty
company - you know those hand buzzers and all sorts of neat junk you get at
parties etc.

Now it's a warehouse - for as long the owner keeps it from the partners and
eminent domain (I think his offer was around $200k or less a few years back.
LAst I checked in with him, he was still there.

The building has history - as Steinbach 's warehouse, as a theatre (no, I
 don't
know what it was called - I think Helen Pike might of taken this task on..)

So it's there - in great shape, the same style as the fastlane - someday it
will meet the wrecking ball. Jsut no one really knows anything about it.

The MK was one the best looking buildings to have been demolished.

Nice to see the FF building being used for something so practical like a
warehouse.

Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Massive Tree Massacre Cookman Elsewhere in AP?

2010-09-17 Thread Michael Downing
Sadly, the issue of the trees being cut down has been going on since the
beginning of the year - there was pretty extensive coverage in the tri-City
News
and the Coaster (don't recall that stellar beacon of journalism the Asbury Park
Press quite catching on to the coverage). From conversations with people in
City Hall, there was no other option or alternative and the trees had to
go..it seemed to me back then (as it still does), that the utility
companies
and our local government saw an opportunity to re-do all the pipes and
electrical lines using Fed $$, and took it.

Re: [AsburyPark] Re: sublime

2010-08-30 Thread Michael Downing
Interesting that the night of Sublime, my wife and I were on the Boardwalk and
we didn't see a single policemen anywhere - there were a few by the SP but
usually there are at least a few of the little Madison Marquette
rental/robo-officers patrolling in pairs. We hung out on a bench between
Langosta and Boards and not a single officer wandered by. We saw a few by the
SP working the parking meters and keeping the under 21 crowd in line, but I
would have expected more of a presence.

I agree. I certainly wouldn't want people to stop coming to A.P. I just want
them to pay for parking. I (and all my neighbors) would also be willing to pay
for parking via a resident parking permit. It's a win/win situation for the
city, residents AND our beloved visitors.

Oak: I don't think anyone is writing we don't want visitors... just a solution
to an obvious and easily fixed problem.

The growth of AP is awesome. I love it. It also brings growing pains.
Every single one of my neighbors agrees about Resident Parking Only
It's better than doing nothing and just watching the problem grow as AP
continues to move forward. I believe the time to act is before next summer.

then again, it was also a zoo this saturday night as well.

That's because more and more and more people are coming to Asbury Park and
Ocean Grove. Both towns were down in the dumps for years.

OG recovered first. AP, even they way it is today - people are coming down
  to
the boardwalk and to the downtown.

People drive. People need to park.

Parking in AP was a problem since the automobile became popular.

I told you how to solve the parking problem.

Pray for rain every weekend. Tear down the pony, the boardwalk and close up
the bars. Don't hold any events in town.

I promise you, people won't come and forget about parking your car, because
when you do, it would get stolen.
