[AsburyPark] Wesley Grove area development

2012-04-11 Thread terrariumlife
This is off topic from what you all are discussing, but has anyone else noticed
the killdeer, especially during the evening/night in the Wesley Grove area,
particularly the largest lot across the street but also the one that is about
to be developed. They seem to like this area and I'm not sure if they are
nesting there, but it seems like an ideal nesting area for them. I know there
is nothing you can do about the lot being developed, but do you think they
could cordon off the other lot if the birds are nesting. I would hate to have
the eggs stepped on.

[AsburyPark] Who is the black PT Cruiser guy?

2012-03-02 Thread terrariumlife
There is a man that lives in the area. I've seen him everywhere from Belmar to
Asbury Park. You may know him. He is a heavy guy, I think greyish hair, in
his 50's or early 60's, drives around in a black PT Cruiser and makes comments
to young guys (all 20-30-somethings that I know of). I know of three different
people that this happens to but I'm assuming there are more. He'll drive
slowly behind, cruise by and make a comment. It's not usually a sexual
comment, but it's obvious what he is up to. He's a perv. He asked my friend
if he wanted a ride on more than one occasion. On one occasion he kept
circling around the block and asking. This stuff has been going on for years.

If you know this man or if he is your friend, you can warn him that the police
will be notified. I've already told one local officer that I know about him
but haven't officially reported him. He's been doing it for years but at this
point it's become really annoying and I can't just laugh it off like I used to.

[AsburyPark] Re: How much should drinks cost these days....?

2011-11-11 Thread terrariumlife
$7 is ridiculous for an average, 5.3%, run of the mill Octoberfest beer,
especially from Sam Adams, which is sort of overrated. A six pack of that is
about $8.50 if you look around enough (think Max's in Neptune City, maybe
Spirits in Wanamassa), and maybe $10 at the most at other stores. Even in NYC
you can still get a $2.50 beer. I just did, at least. The Annex has
high-rated (B+ and up) microbrews and Belgian/German beers, often with high
alcohol content (filling, bang for your buck) for $5-6 or so, maybe less, and
cheap cans of beer. Johhny Mac's has decent prices, too, and they also have
their drink prices listed, which seems like a rarity. I don't like bars that
are tricky like that, although I haven't been to Ivan's. I know that it's not
affordable for all alcohol serving establishments to serve $3 beers, but they
have to know that they have to keep the prices as low as possible. I know that
if I am at a bar and the beer is expensive, I often go for the most alcoholic
beer and then just drink less. Stinks for the bartenders as it means less
tips.

the other night, I got home late and my daughter said hey dad, let's get out
and go get a burger, lets try Ivan's since we haven't gone there...

Great burger ($5) for me with a Sam Adams Oktoberfest, she had a steak
sandwich and salad and no drink. Bill came and I glanced at it.

$7.00 for a draft of Sam Adams? I had to ask if that was right. Told it was.

Glad I only had one. The guy next to me said the reg beers are $3. I think
that's what he said. I guess I have to check them out at happy hour. I
figured Monday night football... cheap guys night out.

I don't know. I was in NYC the past two days and don't think my bar tabs were
 that.

A couple years ago, I got past the $4 per beer point, then $5, then $6 for
 premium.

Paying $11 for a glass of $9 per bottle of wine...

I got shafted a few weeks ago in a retirement village. It said a pint of
beer. I know if I drank a pint, I'd be, well feeling it. The plastic cup was
a 12oz cup. My wife said don't say anything. $5.

But I did. The waitress told me that's our pint cup...

I'm just putting this out there because I want to see all these places make
it and not a place to come to for just special nights.

At least the parking was free.

2011-10-29 Thread terrariumlife
Haven't read all of the posts yet, so maybe someone else noticed this already,
but I've been noticing a few people parking in Ocean Grove and going to Asbury.
I'm sure this has been going on for a while, but I noticed people walking back
to and leaving a certain area. Not going to say where it is as not to ruin it.
 It's pretty obvious, though.

[AsburyPark] Re: Boardwalk / downtown / Lakes

2011-10-14 Thread terrariumlife
I am pretty sure there are no otters in Ocean Grove. I've seen muskrats scurry
into the water plenty of times, but no otters. There are river otters in New
Jersey, with their habitat most likely threatened more and more on a daily
basis, but I've never seen one around here.

someone with common sense would take advantage of people that like to stroll
 - from OG and AP and north...

The boardwalk and a new lakewalk should take one directly from the
boardwalk aroiund both sides of the casino and down along wesley lake. It
 would be a natural stroll.

You probably wouldn't know it, but there is a sidewalk (what there is of it)
along a good portion of the OG side. Add a few benches or bumps along the
walkway and you wind up with a natural extension into the downtown or from
 the downtown to the boardwalk.

I'd rather walk along the lake then down cookman ave - gives people an option.

On the north end of town, I'd do the same - some kind of walkway or path
around the lake with seating etc.

I'd also like to see picnic areas along the BW -so maybe a family can do some
take out from a boardwalk eatery (or downtown) or yes, bring their own. Do it
at the north end if your fearful. Not everyone wants to eat on the beach or
on their lap on a bench. you can always meter the picnic tables...

There's so much natural beauty that can go a real long way - that is, if
someone takes a step back to notice. And sunset is a natural as well.

[AsburyPark] Re: Two more shootings last night

2011-08-11 Thread terrariumlife
If you want to find the real potential racists, I think you need to head over
to the APP.com article comment sections. There you can read between the lines
and find some thinly veiled racism, as well as out right ignorance. I would
focus my energy there, or, maybe not. It depends on how much you like going in
circles with idiots. Anyway, Asbury Park probably has plenty of white liberal
creative types that are out of touch with the rest of the town (and could
maybe care less), but the people in this group seem to be quite concerned with
the town as a whole, not just the boardwalk, etc. I always wish there was more
good I could do. For one, I think that there should be many community gardens
throughout the town that the people could take control of.

[AsburyPark] Re: Has anyone seen a snow plow yet

2010-12-28 Thread terrariumlife
Are we really this pathetic that we have to freak out about not being able to
drive our cars around? I know that it's important for ambulances and fire
trucks to be able to get around, but I found it quite comforting (for one day
only - today everyone was as out as they could be to buy bread, salt, or
whatever they couldn't walk to get) to be able to walk around the area and not
be surrounded by hundreds of cars. All that I could think was this is how it
should be. F--- cars!

People freak out about a little bit of snow, as if it's all over. Is your home
life that bad? Maybe go outside? 33 degrees and full sun isn't that bad,
actually. I'm usually the one that complains about the weather (in the spring
and summer when it's not hot enough). This is just reality. We live at 40
degrees latitude in a humid temperate/humid subtropical climate. This is the
temperate side. It snows here. I don't want to be a jerk, but I feel like we
can do better as humans. My rant isn't fully directed toward list subscribers,
but I think there are more important things to worry about than if your street
is plowed. Ever hear of hydraulic fracturing?

[AsburyPark] Re: Massive Tree Massacre Cookman Elsewhere in AP?

2010-09-17 Thread terrariumlife
I don't think it's the worst thing in the world that could have happened.
Callery Pears are pretty tough trees and they actually stay green for quite a
while, not to mention they look nice later in the fall. I'm not sure what
cultivar is planted in Asbury, but I'm assuming it's Bradford. Unless you
prune it very early on, this one is sort of doomed to the limb breakage. It's
sad to see the trees go, but there are plenty of fast growing trees out there
for replanting, especially Ginko. There should be larger openings in the
sidewalk for bigger green spaces. I think that would be a great thing to have.
Over by the pizza place it looks like there is room for a lot of plants. Old
Man Rafferty's had a nice little setup. I think they even had a datura plant
in one pot. I wasn't sure if that was a mistake or intentional. They also
have a potted apple tree that fruited in front. Keeping plants in very large
planters is just as good as street trees. Big concrete planters would be nice.
There are so many plants that can replace the trees. I would volunteer my
efforts, maybe put in some hardy/semi-hardy palm trees in.

If I remember correctly one of the decision points that led to the decision

30-40 year old trees are not history... I personally liked them there, and
in a perfect world would have preferred them to remain. But sometimes things
get done for a reason that I may or may not love but that have merit
regardless. This appears to be one of those cases.

City Hall, there was no other option or alternative and the trees had to
