It will rely on foreigners that are visiting the area. It will stay afloat
somehow for at least a year.

After the past week or so on this list, I don't think we need to spend
any more of our liberal, tolerant, interracial tourist money in AP.

[AsburyPark] Bye Bye Flamingo Hotel

2008-02-05 Thread Jack Pitzer
This morning, demolition crews are on site at the Flamingo Hotel. Does
anybody know why this viable building is being demolished? And why
aren't the horrid bungalows directly across the street being demolished?
And what's the status of The Met Hotel. It's a rotting, dangerous mess.
I guess we do live in bizzarro world. Perfectly good hotel gets demo'd
while abandoned eyesores are left to rot away. Makes no sense at all.

[AsburyPark] Bye Bye Brookdale

2007-04-22 Thread Hinge
Brookdale moving out of Asbury, to Neptune: Brookdale moving out of Asbury to
Neptune
New extension site provides room for expansion, college officials say

Posted by the Asbury Park Press on 04/22/07

BY NANCY SHIELDS
COASTAL MONMOUTH BUREAU

ASBURY PARK — After more than two decades in the city, Brookdale Community
College is
moving its higher education center to Neptune, where officials say they can get
the space
they need to expand.

The college will move out of the two floors it occupies at 601 Grand Ave. at
the end of this
semester to a new site on Neptune Boulevard. Brookdale originally started
extension
courses in Asbury Park at 301 Memorial Drive in 1985, moving a short time later
to 500
Grand Ave., and in May 1992, to 601 Grand Ave.

We've outgrown this location; I can't get another course in here, said
Charanne Smith, the
center's director, on Friday. We can't grow any more here and continue to
provide
students with services.

Brookdale has contracted to pay the Neptune Board of Education $600,000 over
the next
five years and will start out leasing the vacant first floor of the board's
property on 60
Neptune Blvd. across the street from Neptune High School.

Brookdale leased its space in Asbury Park for $145,000 a year, said Avis D.
McMillon, a
college spokeswoman. So it is a better deal for us (to go to Neptune).

The new site, which opens for classes in the fall, is to be called the Eastern
Monmouth
Center.

What makes this a great situation is the opportunity we have to expand beyond
the first
floor after our first year there, said Brookdale's Executive Vice President
Louis Goetting in
a news release.

Brookdale may add classrooms on the fourth floor of the building when the
Monmouth
Vocational Schools are expected to move out. That floor has two laboratories
for the
sciences that are in move-in condition, college officials said.

Smith said 62 courses will be offered, compared to 54 in the fall of 2006 and
26 in the fall
of 2004. The center had 800 students in the fall of 2006, and wants to increase
that
number.

The need for more parking space also helped lead to the decision to go to the
new site in
Neptune, officials said.

McMillon said the new Eastern Monmouth Center will keep Brookdale's ties to the
Culinary
Center at Asbury Park High School, which Brookdale operates in conjunction with
the
Monmouth County Vocational School.

Other Brookdale locations include the campuses in Lincroft and Freehold
Township, and
the centers in Long Branch, Hazlet, Wall and Sandy Hook.

Don't go Joey. It's always hard to be the minority opinion but it's really important. It's much more important than contributing where everyone always agrees with you.
