 Dan,
With all sincerity and due respect: While what you are saying is
true, it is defintely not the entire truth of the matter, and can
even be considered 'spun' by some. The fact is that the 17th
street
levee which busted was being workred on recently, but work was not
finished. The fact is that this levee was earmarked as far back as
2002 for work by the army corps engineers, but diversion of funds
to
Iraq delayed the start of the project significantly (of the 72
million that was needed, the white house only approved a little
over
10 million, citing the need to fund the war in iraq). if funding
had
been made available when originally approved by the legislature ,
and not vetoed by the executive branch, the levee would have been
 shored up.

bush ran on promises of running the country as a ceo would. he
has
certainly done that, and his perfomance is par for the course of
his
ceo-track record. somewhere accountability needs to start.

there can be no argument that severe nature-related damage was
unavoidable. that being said, the horrific extent that has
occurred
is a direct result of the administrations zeal to satisfy the neo-
 cons publicly stated policy.

the fact that people live in a natural-disatser prone area is no
excuse for not providing them with due safety. especially after
being argued, studied and given due process through the entire
system of government our republic is architected upon. the fact
that
the funding got denied where the buck stopped, requires public
 acknowledgment, discourse and, ultimately, accountability.

seriously, and with all tounge removed from cheek, in discussion
on this topic with others, some readily agree that the imperial

neccessary. I respect that opinion, but feel that, at a minimum,
the facts need to be discussed for all interested persons to reach
 their own opinion..

As to the policy: it has its origins in the recently
declassified
1950 document NSC-68 (authored Paul Nitze). This documents a
roadmap
of imperial aspirations which rely on preemptive strikes and
taking
control, by force if neccesary, of natural resources. The modern
flavor of this plan, crafted as early as 1992 by paul wolfowitz
and
later redited by cheney and colin powell to soften the very strong
world imperialism language. This strategy of glbal imperialism and
it needing to take root in the middle east is clearly defined in
The
Grand Chessboard: American Primacy and Its Geostrategic
Imperatives
by Zbigniew K. Brzezinski. Their policy is a simple one.
controlling
resources is the key to controlling the rest of the world. this is
the reason for our alliance with isreal, it has nothing to do with
israel controlling us, any notion of a 'chosen people', or blaming
israel for our war. again, this is about developing an
overpowering
presence inthe middle east. the reason for going into iraq is two
fold (according to position papers authored by luminaries such as
wolfowitz, cheney, rumsfeld, and pearle among others)..to
creatiing
a lasting military presence in northen and southern iraq in the
areas of oil fields, and driving a wedge in the islamic world by
putting an american prsence between iran, saudia arabia and syria.
all setting the stage for the neo-cons dream of an imperialistic
 world.

this is not a left wing nut-job conspiracy. i dare say the
editorial
commentary of this post is minimal, and such editorial comments
are
aimed at making sure these comments do not come under the banner
of 'conspiracy theory or snti-semitism..these statements are
culled
directly from PNAC (project for a new american century..a think

the
list goes on and on) and IASPS (Institute for Advanced Strategic

headed
the head of state campaigns for Bob Dole and Benjamin Netanyahu,
