Sorry Tommy but being almost 10 years older than you I have many more memories of The Casino. The concerts did not come until later years ---When we were young we used to go ice skating there and loved going on the carousel. My mother would dress us up and it would be a very special occasion---she even made us wear the little white lace gloves from our Holy Communion outfit! Debbie I'm in no way minimizing your personal reminiscence. Everyone in the world has them of some place. But I can't see yours, and you can't see mine. The generations to come won't know of them at all. They won't get that feeling you get when you ride past there at night. Did Asbury Park really miss a perfect opportunity to build something of world-class proportion so folks like you and I can get a fuzzy feeling when we ride by? Personal nostalgia is no reason to save any building. Asbury Park missed a big opportunity. I'm willing to bet Gary M would agree in private. Yeah, I saw people putting money into the meters all weekend. Right now the American people are getting whooped by Fascist bialouts - (Fascism = socializing business losses through government while keeping profits privatized. It's not Socialism - it's Fascism). Government and business converting your money to their uses with nothing back to you. That's Fascism. Were it socialism, something would at least be coming back to you (redistributing). Maybe Asbury would be better off advertising a bailout backlash or a bailout for people. No beach fees. No parking fees. Half the sales tax (UEZ). No hotel room tax. No tourist taxes whatsoever. Free outdoor concerts. Free entertainment in the green spaces (like Werner once pointed out - jugglers, acrobats, mimes, strongest man in the world types [note: saw a guy in AP with that show when I was a kid], etc.) Asbury Park - where you spend your money on yourself. just sat at the beautiful bar at stella marina with a friend. we loved seeing the casino edifice through the windows. i thought of werner because the most annoying thing about sitting at the bar (and i imagine some of the tables) is the obnoxious parking lot lights beaming in at you. love the casino building. its not ugly. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, justifiedright [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: http://edition.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/europe/10/22/ugliest.buildings/? iref=intlOnlyonCNN#cnnSTCPhoto or http://tinyurl.com/5rn24e I am shocked, SHOCKED, that the words Asbury Park and Casino don't appear on this list. [AsburyPark] Re: Top 10 Ugliest Buildings In The World
I've been a great supporter of the current Redevelopment Plan, and still am. But if you asked me what one thing I would change if they let me, it would be the decision to save the Casino. Save it is a misnomer anyway since more of it may have been gone than was left of it. What a missed opportunity. What a piece of realty, between the Ocean and a Lake. That parcel of real estate could have been used for a signature building, something world-wide glorious. Think of the Australian Opera house - when you see it, you say, That's Austrialia. Imagine a building that makes a new generation say, 'That's Asbury Park. Instead, we have Tillie, a clown face we stole from Coney Island, devoid of artistic worth, to define us. Just the construction of such a grand building and the anticipation it would bring would be it's own adverstising. Casino was always Convention Hall's ugly sister, and while you might name one or two acts that played there, it really wasn't the big of a place for shows. It had a short life as something good anyway. I'm 45 and when I was a kid it was a falling down half boarded up mess. We had this conversation before. You have to be pretty old to even remember seeing a significant act there. But alas, the Nostalgia Nazi, comprised mostly of people who never saw one day in the Casino but have mythologized its worth beyond reasonable proportion, won the day. Far be it from Asbury Park to have one outdated Hall that never turned a profit (CH). We have to have two! Good grief. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, Gabrielle Obre [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: just sat at the beautiful bar at stella marina with a friend. we loved seeing the casino edifice through the windows. i thought of werner because the most annoying thing about sitting at the bar (and i imagine some of the tables) is the obnoxious parking lot lights beaming in at you. love the casino building. its not ugly. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, justifiedright justifiedright@ wrote: http://edition.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/europe/10/22/ugliest.buildings/? iref=intlOnlyonCNN#cnnSTCPhoto or http://tinyurl.com/5rn24e I am shocked, SHOCKED, that the words Asbury Park and Casino don't appear on this list. Stella Marina was very busy Friday night, beautiful bar and also a top rate restaurant as well.it should do very well. It was nice to see all of the activiity in town Saturday as well, lots of energy with all of the concerts going on. It was kind of funny to see the teenagers standing out in the cold rain on the bw at 3:30 PM for for 5:30 PM door at convention hall...some with just t-shirts on. The city could have made some nice money on parking, the bottom line is people need to park and the city deserves the right to make some money. It it is providing a safe and clean environment for visitors and it is just pocket change or a card swipe. They should have shut down the meters regrouped and had them up and running the right way in 30 days max. Yahoo!
