Re: [Assam] From Outlook India: An Indictment of In dianHigher Education

2007-11-23 Thread umesh sharma
Alpanaji,

Excuse me from seeming uncouth - but He He He thats a good one!!

If you mean Western countries like West Indies -- perhaps you have have heard
right that some --only a few (mostly private run) Indian high schools are
better.

But on the whole there can be no doubt that most Indian high schools (esp govt
ones) lack adequate staff, facilities -- if you compare with western countries
like USA, Canada , UK or even Mexico. In Mexico 98% graduate from elementary
school -compared to 70% in India (that too is a govt estimate - out of those
enrolled -- which is about 80% of total primary school age population).

And even if curriculum is challenging in state level exams - in many states
(including Madhya Pradesh, UP, Bihar and many others) there is always the
option of cheating inside the school examination hall with full cooperation of
the examiners - who may be from another school. Some time back I recall UP had
tougned its anti-cheating rule and passing rate fell from 80% to 30%. The
parents were angry and the govt lost face in international and national arena. .

On the plank that anti-cheating rules would be reverted to old system if
elected - the new govt came to power.

It is true that most private schools are forced to be competitive but in places
like Delhi even government schools are pretty well managed thanks to the civil
society incl media who maintain hawks eye of teacher's teacing and attendance ,
examination etc.

Also, perhaps the NRA perception that US colleges are good but not schools -
may stem from the fact that dating stats early in US (though not true for all
communities) and that by the time students reach college there are mature
enough. So many NRI parents send their kids or migrate wholesale to India till
the risky years are over. That may have nothing to do with the quality of
science or math or humanities education provided in US schools or that of UK or
Canada.

Regards.

Umesh

Alpana, Alpana, Alpana! When will you ever learn :-)?

Just because these folks --you or I or whoever
came to the USA or went to Bilaat or what have
you, does not necessarily mean we were EDUCATED.
Does it? Education is a bit more than collecting
information or being able to do good math. Or did
you miss the highlighted points ,made by the
writer in that Outlook article?

I thought they say that the standard
of secondary school (not college) education in
India is higher than that of many western

*** Let us assume for a moment, just to make you
feel good, that it is indeed so. Now then if it
IS so,
why is India in the shape it is? Or why do
Indians in these forums like our own, ask the
kind of questions they do or make the comments
they do? And finally how many from a class of
fifty or even a hundred ( with one teacher
riding herd as they have to in many Indian
schools; as you are oblivious of ) come out to be
the 'brilliant' products they get to be known as?
What percentage of an Indian school or college
get that minimum of what could be considered a
reasonably rounded EDUCATION , never mind
well-rounded?

We don't expect you to speak for what you have
never seen or experienced that goes on outside
your sphere of awareness. But can you enlighten
us from your own experiences ? I realize it was
from a distant past as our modern day friends
would readily counter. But how much has it
changed, do you have any idea?

Statesman News Service
KOLKATA, Nov. 22: Perhaps realising the protest against Taslima Nasreen's
visa extension would incite more passions than the recapture of Nandigram,
Mr Idris Ali, president of All India Minority Forum today did an U-turn. He
said yesterday's protest was solely against Taslima Nasreen's prolonged stay
and not related to the Nandigram issue in any way, as was reported in the
press.
Incidentally, the protestors had claimed yesterday that Nandigram was also
one of the issues, apart from the controversial Bangladeshi writer.
We have not mixed up issues as has been reported. We were not agitating
against the violence in Nandigram, we were only protesting against the visa
extension of Ms Taslima Nasreen as we strongly believe that she has no right
to stay in this state, Mr Ali said.
He met the Iman of Tipu Sultan Masjid, Syed Md Murur Rahman Barkati, this
evening but refused to comment on whether they have planned any further
protests. We have not yet planned but will be discussing it over soon.
Denying allegations that the forum was behind yesterday's violence, Mr Ali
said, We were protesting peacefully as planned but police arrested about
200 people in the morning, even before violence erupted.
The arrest in fact sparked off the violence. He also added that police has
booked the people on charges of rioting, unlawful assembly, attempt to
murder, voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servants from duty, and
causing damage.
Mr Ali said the blueprint of the movement submitted by the forum to the
police had mentioned that peaceful agitation will be carried out only in the
Park Circus area and not near KC Das as claimed by the city police chief.
We had about 60 representatives of the forum and were only confined to the
Park Circus area as per our plan. We never said we will also be agitating
near KC Das at Esplanade.
He added, Our men were not involved in the violence that spread to Moulali,
Ripon Street-AJC Bose Road crossing, Dorina Crossing, Beniapukur, Taltala,
Kareya, Entally, Park Street, Topsia, Park Street and Sundari Mohan Avenue.
I do not know whether they were hoodlums or any group but they were not
members of our forum.
Mr Ali has filed a case against Mr Biman Bose, state Left Front chairman and
Benoy Konar, senior CPI-M leader, for making derogatory comments about the
High Court. He said if necessary steps are not taken against them, people
will lose faith in the judicial system. He demanded urgent hearing of this
case.
Asked if he has heard whether Taslima Nasreen has left the city, Mr Ali
said, I have no information in this regard. I have not heard anything so
far.

I do not think that is such agood idea. Where will we dispose the heavy
chloride content water then? Into rivers? It will only add to the increasing
pollution of river streams. Also, too much chloride can prove detrimental to
the fresh water aquatic life.

I'm uncertain where the notion of desalination (which is expensive) fits into

laying pipelines from the sea coast to feed sea water to muncipalities.
the sea water can be used for the toilets, for cleaning utensils and
for the garages. a beginning can be made in cities along the vast
coastline of india. luckily india has the technology now to desalinate
water. in most urban centres people have already begun buying so called
mineral water in bottles and jars. if people are willing to buy water,
the sea water filtered and desalinated can also be supplied. clusters
of tiny sea water treatment units can come up all along the coast and
the water can be transported. we should also start working on sea water
lakes fed by a pipeline. the lakes will bring down the pollution level,
control temperature and also help develop fisheries. sea weeds can also
grow. india is fortunate to have sea on three sides. a few hundred
kilometre long pipelines from the sea pumping sea water will be very
practical, safe and economic. sea water will also kill a variety of
bacterias and insects. our rivers too can be flushed with sea water,
roads cleaned. the need therefore is to use treated sea water. it is
neither practical nor desirable to stop using flush toilets. all you
need is a regular supply of water to flush out the shit. so start using
sea water. desalination plants using solar energy have already come up
in several countries. one is working in tamil nadu. tidal energy can
also be used to desalinate water. let us use our vast resources of sea

So at Thanksgiving 2007 after Turkey and Cranberry pudding they should
pledge to work out a very well thought out plan to enable Direction to
Purposeful Education for all in Oxom now and for the Future.
Time and tide waits for no man.

Mukulda:
Nice! . And if we have been asked to work out a plan for Purposeful
Education for Oxom, then what do you think in your mind it will be. I have a
plan what I call, Get On Demand Plan. You get whatever you demand. I call it
the GOD plan imagining that money is not the problem (which probably is a fact
for Oxom), that is what we would ask GOD to give for Oxom.

Let us discuss what such a Purposeful Education System would be for Oxom or
rather the North East?

Education is what brought many Assamnetters to where they are.
They surely want their old country folk to be properly educated to do
something better-live better-healthier-happier-more useful to the
world/humanity.

 We Do Need That Education...

China is re-orienting and investing in its higher education sector to
meet the challenges of the future, but India continues to ignore the systemic
collapse that is crying out for an urgent and drastic overhaul.

Baruasaab,

Ok for a quicky. By foreign means no Assamese,no English-only IN the Foreign
Language, force-fed.

We also need higher education and technical education I only went to 16+. And
you list 15 Types of colleges?campuses+Universities? Maybe we can lump all
these in one GOD-NE. But these- later.
what will be these and where in North East will be these : GOD -NE should be
everywhere!

You should wait for all participants to gather their thoughts- an they will
come out with gems.
Do not rush anybody.Let out a long Rope!

Dear Mukulda:
Very well!!!
I support point # 2,3,4 fully except for 'foreign language' term. Could not
understand the 'Only one foreign language per area cocept' in item # 1.
We also need higher education and technical education. Engineering Degree
College, Diploma College, Technical Training college, Agricultural College,
Petroleum Engineering college, Tea Training college, Rice Research center,
Medical college, Nursing college, Homeopathic college, Vetenary college,
Chyropractic college, Acupunture college, Ayurvedic college, Community college
for adult education, etc.
Let us try to find out what will be these and where in North East will be these.
Thanks
Rajen

Co-Ed MiddleSchool 711 yrs. Prime Language=FOREIGN + Some formal mother
Tongue-Assamese/Bodo/Bengali/Khasi in the Foreign Land' s best Curriculum.
Self-Assessment as often as you wish.Course material will be E-format

[Assam] IIT-complex = MIT, Harvard etc - an international resignation

2007-11-23 Thread umesh sharma
Hi,

Just talked to one of my closest high-school time friends (in India), another
one I had talked for 2 hours yesterday . I was responding to his voicemail on
my phone which said that XYZ has left his job!!

People continue to leave jobs in India -- but not this job!!! This job is a
job which brings not only power and prestige but also plenty of money - even by
US standards. That of an Indian Police Service (IPS) Officer - pay is not much
- maybe $1,000 per month (like that in US embassy, DC's analyst's pay :-) )
but potential to make much more income or help others make it - esp. those in
wine/spirits etc business or customs etc in India. I am told that even for
small positions people pay upto a $100,000 and bidding is done for many posts.
Thus, if someone leaves such a job -- it makes for international news -
international phone calls. It is still not confirmed though.

Ofcourse, noone will call regarding strangers. This IPS has been a close
acquaintance - he never acknowledged my presence even at Harvard (though I met
his batchmates of KSG) as he did not while we played street cricket with
tennis balls - before either of these guys got married after getting
respectable jobs.

Neither of us went to IITs. Our school venerated IIT grads. One of my immediate
seniors had come second in IIT JEE entrance exam, another came second in AIIMS
exam. But not all wanted to become doctors or engineers. Others saw the world
in a different light. Some joined family businesses. The IPS guy or myself
preferred humanities . He did his entire Indian education from Rajasthan state
only before he went to Harvard. I had studied in various states from pre-school
 onwards.

MBA and Univ corruption

I had met his wife before he did at their MBA college. He was her senior and
had come to deliver talks about how he became an IPS officer. I had met her
while meeting my other friend and while preparing groundwork for an educational
supplement (with advts) on Management Education in Rajasthan - an article
which appeared in Indian Express and Financial Express written by my other
friend - which nearly cost him his seat, since on my insistence he highlighted
the trend that other MBA institutes were also having good facilities . The Vice
Chancellor called angrily at my friend's residence -demanding How dare you?
Ofcourse I shouldered responsibility (not that I was ever called upon) and
later the Vice Chancellor's office was exposed by our local Indian Express
reporters (whom I had explained the situation of How Dare you? ) as taking
big bribes while admitting students into medical grad school (pre-PG) and I
think CBI enquiry was conducted since the VC and the then Chief
Minister were quite close. They perhaps never got round to checking claims
that half the MBA students were on there on merit - the rest on backs of their
parents prestige/political-clout or money.

CLASS CONSCIOUSNESS
These issues come back to me perhaps both of my classmates then stayed right
across from the above mentioned univ. in govt flats wit their parents. My close
friend's father did not get promotion for twenty years because he neither
accepted bribes nor gave any upwards - after twenty years the govt woke up and
he got rapid promotions and came to the state capital where I met his son while
I was in ninth grade. The other classmate was from a well connected family and
his father never had to leave the state capital and only had to deal with
industrialists as part of his job. I have never ever been inside his house -
whether in India or at Harvard .

Amartya Sen's class connection etc

In India he never asked me to come in - here in US- at Harvard he never
responded to an email sent to him by his govt colleague (whom I first met while
talking to Nobel Laureate economist Amartya Sen in his class) -cc marked to me.
The email congratulated my schoolmate on his son's birth at Harvard. Perhaps
because of that he was too busy to meet perhaps the only fellow from his
hometown and school there.

Maybe it was that in my reply I had mentioned my learning from a mutual school
friend (who knew where everyone was) while I was still in India -- that he had
joined both Harvard and also MBA from MIT. Perhaps he was waiting for the
right moment to break the news --once he was done with all these programs. Now
he seems to have broken the radio silence.

IITians are geniuses??

It is interesting that perhaps having suffered (like me) that IITians are
geniuses and (others are fools) many fools like us are seeking world class
degrees - much more prestigious that IITs themselves. Most people think that
after marriage and having kids Indians do not venture abroad. The IPS and the
friend who called me seem to think that world does not stop for non-IITians
even after marriage. Settled life is not an option in a newly globalized and
wired (internet) economy - where suddenly you can see on the
